Being a mother is one of the highest salaried jobs... since the payment is pure love. ~Mildred B. Vermont

With Mother’s Day approaching I thought I would look for a quote about mothers this month and came across this lovely one. Being a mum can be hard at times (particularly during half term which is when I am writing this)! However the rewards are many and varied, from the thrill of rst steps, to the satisfaction of

children spreading their wings as independent young people and then moving on to creating families

of their own. As Mother’s Day approaches give a thought for all Mums at whatever stage of motherhood they may be, and don’t forget those around you who no longer have their mums to treat this Mother’s Day.

The next issue will be delivered from 28th march – Good Friday. Anything that you

would like to be included must be with me by Thursday 14th march.

6) ALLOW YOUR potential buyers to imagine themselves living there, give some thought to the key benefi ts of your home and bring them into conversation –the sunny patio is perfect for BBQ’s or the luxury bathroom as a fantastic place to unwind after a hectic day.7) ALWAYS HAVE keys to hand for areas such as Garages or outside storage.8) YOUR HOME has had a life and many rooms may have had various uses over the years. Why not give your viewers a feel for your homes versatility by creating a home Book. Pack it full of photographs illustrating the various uses for rooms, your garden at diff erent times of the year, the local village fete last summer.9) KEEP SAFE – Put away any valuables or cash. Never allow yourself to get trapped in a room

without exit. let a neighbour or friends know you’re showing your home and make arrangement to call and check on you within a prescribed time period.10) USE THE professional expertise

of your estate Agent, if you’re not comfortable with doing the viewings than ask your Agent to carry out your viewings, whilst you go out.

A NEW DANCE craze perhaps? Well maybe … if you’re a worm that is! in my opinion, worms have to be the unsung heroes of the garden. They only eat what i don’t want, they tidy up leaves from the borders by dragging them down into the soil, and who else improves our soil structure by adding air holes, incorporating organic matter en route and even provides food for the birds (sorry worms!), all for free?

As far as i’m aware, garden worms don’t have their own ‘worm awareness week’, they just carry on doing what they do best, quietly making beautifully rich, dark brown garden goodness. You may be happy to leave the worms well alone, merrily munching away in the compost heap, but why not have a go at making your own worm villa (known as a wormery), or buying a pre- made version online? most kids love worms

so it’s a great activity to do as a family, or indeed if you enjoy the idea of reducing landfi ll and nourishing your garden at the same time.

Worms will happily nosh through your kitchen waste. They’re not that fussy but they don’t like acidic things such as citrus peels, garlic and onion, but things they do love (strangely) are teabags, eggshell and cold mashed potato, (i’ve heard that for worms these foods are like us eating oysters…they erm… put them in the mood for a little wriggle wriggle). That said, worms never over populate and are able to regulate their breeding actively in line with their environment. Bizarrely they can also change gender to suit the local talent on off er!

They don’t like extremes in temperature, so i’d advise keeping them in a shaded corner which

does not get too hot or cold. Their home can be insulated in winter, or moved into the garage. The resulting compost is rich and when scattered into the borders makes a highly concentrated soil improver, as does the liquid ‘wee tea’ which can be accessed via the tap at the base of the wormery. Diluted at 1:10 with water it makes a great natural liquid plant food too.

Until next time,happy gardening, Lee...

- Poach the fi sh. Put the fi sh in the frying pan and pour over 500ml of the milk. Finely chop the onion, then add to the milk, with the bay leaves. Bring the milk just to the boil - you will see a few small bubbles. Reduce the heat and simmer for 8 mins. lift the fi sh onto a plate and strain the milk into a jug to cool. Flake the fi sh into large pieces in the baking dish.

- hard-boil the eggs. Bring a small pan of water to a gentle boil, then carefully lower the eggs in with a slotted spoon. Bring the water back to a gentle boil, with just a couple of bubbles rising to the surface. set the timer for 8 mins, cook, then drain and cool in a bowl of cold water. Peel, slice into quarters and arrange on top of the fi sh, then scatter over the chopped parsley.

- make the sauce. melt half the butter in a pan, stir in the fl our and cook for 1 min over moderate heat. Take off the heat, pour in a little of the cold poaching milk, then stir until blended. Continue to add the milk gradually, mixing well until you

have a smooth sauce. Return to the heat, bring to the boil and cook for 5 mins, stirring continually. Remove from the heat, season with salt & pepper, then pour over the fi sh.

- Boil the potatoes for 20 mins. Drain, season and mash with the remaining butter and milk. Use to top the pie, starting at the edge of the dish and working your way in - push the mash right to the edges to seal. Fluff the top with a fork, sprinkle with cheese, then bake for 30 mins at a heat of 200C/fan 180C/gas 6.

HELLO WE ARE BENJI & ROSIE, We came to May ower as our owners were workinglong hours.

Pets

HELLO FROM US all at the sanctuary. The start of the year has had its ups and downs. We have had quite an infl ux of dogs and cats coming to us over Christmas which is usual for this time of year. What is unusual is that lots of pedigree dogs are with us for various reasons. We have some beautiful labradors, German shepherd and smaller pedigrees all needing loving homes. if you feel you would like to spend your life with a pet whether it be a dog or a cat please call and see us we are open 2-4 during the week and 1-4 at a weekend. Closed on a Tuesday.

if you also have time on your hand and need to get fi t can we suggest you come and walk some of our dogs during the day. mornings are better before we open or any time on a Tuesday. it gives us all an incentive to walk if we have a four legged friend at our side & you will be surprised at how much thefresh air and exercise will helplift your spirits especially nowthe weather is getting a littlebetter. If you would like further information please call us 01302711330 or 07969203206.

HELLO, MY NAME IS LOKI. I was returned to the

May ower because my owner was struggling to look

after me and a young baby.

I can be a little nervous when I rst meet people, but it

doesn’t take me long to warm to you, especially if you win

me over with a little play.

I am quite a laid back dog and am generally happy to sit

back and watch the world go by, I do like attention &

I love to have a fuss and love to go out for long walks.

I don’t want for much; if you could o er me a place in your

family, a cosy spot to curl up in and a little exercise then why

not take me in the paddock and get to

know me a little better? It could be the start of

something beautiful.

PipHELLO I’M PIP, I came to

May ower due to my owners ill health.

Even though I’m a tad older I am still very playful

and like my walks, I am a loving lad that likes the

company of my owner but I won’t mind being left for

a while as I don’t mind my own company.

I have only lived with older children but my

previous owners said I was very fussy with any

children, I don’t like other dogs too much so a home

where I am the only dog would be ideal.

If you think I would t nicely into your home,

then please don’t hesitate to ask one of my carers.

MEDIA PROTOCOLFOR CLARITY ‘OFFICIAL statements’ from the Town Council to the media ie. Press, Radio, Tv etc., will be made by the proper offi cer of the Council, ie the Clerk.

other statements appearing in the media, will more than likely be an individual viewpoint rather than a collective council comment.

GAINSBOROUGH RD TOILETSIT WOULD APPEAR that a recent misleading article in a newspaper is worthy of addressing.

historically, when under DmBC control the toilets were costing the council tax payer in excess of £11k per annum, and after the decision by DmBC to close the facilities a petition from the business fraternity was organised and presented to both Bawtry and Doncaster Councils. This resulted in negotiations between Bawtry and Doncaster and a six year peppercorn rent allowing Bawtry Town Council to re-open the facilities, as had been requested by the petition.

it was never envisaged that (as is the case with some council activities)this would be a ‘profi table enterprise’; the Council is not a business as such, but does believe in acting in the best interests of its area in totality. it could be argued that the facilities benefi t the visitor to Bawtry rather than the resident.

initially, the toilets were changed from a free facility to a nominal paid facility, in line with other local authorities. This of course incurred a capital spend of £8,990 on top of contract cleaning (which has since been re-organised). The contract cleaning for a 15 month period totalled £6,570. The current cleaning is carried out by the council handyman within his normal weekly routine. The total expend for a 15 month period has been £17,112 with an achieved income of £1,521.

stripping away the initial capital costs and cleaning contract fi gures leaves £1,242 expenditure against the income shown above.

The toilets are open Monday to Saturday 0830 to1730. Damage, and avoidance to pay, does happen but the facility is once again available and being monitored.

BAWTRY COMMUNITY LIBRARYTHE VOLUNTEER RUN library reaches its fi rst anniversary at the beginning of march, and from the outset the council has been a strong advocate for the facility. True working together is paramount in this venture with in excess of 85 volunteers committed to the library and its continuance. long may it continue.

WELCOME TO THE spring edition of Austerfi eld Parish Council News which highlights recent achievements and issues withinthe parish:

THE AUTUMN COMMUNITY event celebrating the opening of the Jubilee play space was a great success with Austerfi eld families. Residents have requested an annual event. if you could spare some time to help with the planning group please contact any of your Parish Councillors.

OVER FIFTY AUSTERFIELD pensioner’s enjoyed a celebratory Christmas lunch at the mayfl ower. An excellent meal was enjoyed thanks once again to the generous support of our Ward Councillors.

COUNCIL CONTINUES TO receive complaints concerned with dust and odour emissions from Bawtry Carbon

international (BCi). Please ring BCi directly on 01302 718100 to register your complaint. The environment Agency has been monitoring dust in the environment over the last few months & will be reporting to the council following their analysis.

DONCASTER MBC WILL shortly be consulting residents on the intention to close the Field study Centre. As you will be aware the Centre was previously the village school and the parish council hope new uses for the building can be developed which will continue to provide a much needed community facility. Your suggestions would be very welcome. Please contact the Chairman, Eddie Lodge, for further information on 714410.

AUSTERFIELD PRIORITIES FOR 2013 are published in an area action plan which will guide the work of supporting agencies such as DmBC. Residents can see a range of Council papers including agendas & minutes in Bawtry Community library – ask for the APC fi le.

The next two Parish Council Meetings will take place on Monday 11th March and Monday 22ndApril 2013 at 6.45pm in the Field Study Centre. We look forward to hearing from residents in person at council meetings. A request for help AT THE MOMENT the lions have no suitable large safe and convenient place to store all the equipment used for fund raising and it is diffi cult to keep track of. it would be better if we could store the equipment in one place. Do you have a secure garage or lockable storage space which the lions could use to house

this equipment and have unlimited access. You would not be responsible for the equipment as the lions have their own insurance. if you can help please give us a call us on 07752 688 340 or send us an e-mail to [email protected].
