• The ‘Bauhaus’ was the name of a very important art & architecture school in Germany.
• The Bauhaus was short lived (1919-1933) but its influence on design is still seen today.
• Bauhaus is often described as ‘Modernism’
• Three of the most famous members were:– Walter Gropius
– Hannes Meyer
– Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

cuts, the Bauhaus masters
declare the school dissolved
as of March 31, 1925.

appointed director of the
Bauhaus, (1930). Mies
focused on freeing Bauhaus
of political activity in order to
restore its reputation.
Bauhaus relocates to Berlin
(1932). Critics claim that
Bauhaus was anti-German,
Communist and Bolshevik.
On September 30, the
Bauhaus school was
vandalized and closed.
On April 11 1933, the
Nazi government
closes Bauhaus.
László Moholy-Nagy revived the
school for a single year in Chicago
as the New Bauhaus (1937).

Architecture
• Gropius wanted to reflect the modernist Bauhaus style in the building.
• The Building was unlike anything seen at the time and followed a ‘form follows function’ principle.
• Bauhaus principles were also followed in interiors, modernist interiors are still very popular today.
• Tel Aviv in Israel has some excellent examples of modernist architecture, you can probably spot buildings inspired by the Bauhaus in your town or city

Marcel Lajos Breuer
(1902-1981) Architect &
Furniture designer, One of the
fathers of Modernism, Breuer
showed a great interest in
modular construction and simple
forms.
László Moholy-Nagy
(1895-1946) was a
professor in the Bauhaus
school. He was a strong
advocate of the integration
of technology and industry
into the arts.
