President’s Message… Maureen M Karas

What is happening May 26th?

Early voting for the 2012 Nevada Primary begins! In just 25 days, you will be able to vote for your primary candidates. Are you ready? Do you know for whom you will vote – all the way down the ballot? If not, mark your calendar for ARW’s second election season “CANDIDATE FAIR FUNDRAISER” to be held on the third Thursday, May 17th at the Italian American Club, 2333 East Sahara, starting at 5:30 pm.

Be an informed voter! Spend an evening shaking hands with the candidates, learning their campaign goals, asking questions and ultimately making your ballot decisions. Once you know the slate, you can coach your neighbors and friends. And while you are there, enjoy a real Italian buffet dinner with friends and other members.

Please note this is a fundraiser, and as such, payment and pricing are different this month. All candidates and non-members must pay in advance, $40. Members and associate members may pay at the door, $35. See the flyer in this newsletter for more information.

Now back to the June 12th Primary. Here are some helpful things to remember and make a note of so that you are prepared to cast your vote:

• Have you moved? Voter Registration stops on May 12th – 30-days prior to the Primary election. Go to www.clarkcountynv.gov/vote or call 455-8683 for information on how to register.

• Early voting begins May 26th and ends June 8th. Early voting locations will be published in the Las Vegas Review Journal, as we get closer to the start date.

• Will you be traveling or out of town? Are you healthy? Get an absentee ballot sent to your home. Requests for absentee ballots must be post stamped no later than June 5th. See www.clarkcountynv.gov/vote or call 455-8683.

• The 2012 NV Primary will take place on June 12th.

This is perhaps the most important election of our lifetime. There is much at stake both nationally and in our state. Republicans have an opportunity to take the Nevada Senate, and perhaps even the Nevada Assembly. It will take all of us volunteering to help our candidates cross the finish line victorious. Vote, and make sure all of your friends and family vote as well.

See you next month!

ACTIVE REPUBLICAN WOMEN OF LAS VEGASCampaign Volunteer Form

The scholarship committee, chaired by Melody Howard, met, and have determined that two $1500 scholarships will be awarded to a registered Republican female attending a Nevada college junior or senior (full-time student) at ARW's July 19th General Membership Meeting. We included the application form and scholarship guidelines on the next two pages. If you know of anyone

who meets the stated criteria, please have them complete the form and provide all requested documentation to be received no later than May 31, 2012. It is suggested that mailed information be done no later than May 25th.

The applications and guidelines will be on our dinner tables at the April 12th meeting.

ARW's Americanism program is proud to present another Liberty Day Constitution Lecture Series event at Kit Carson Empowerment School. On Tuesday, May 8th at 9:00 am we will have a Constitution Lecture with the 5th grade class and Attorney Jacob Reynolds will be the speaker. The objective of the Constitution Lecture Series is to educate and inspire children as to the intrinsic value of the US Constitution, and how it has an impact on their lives now and in the future. We have local judges and attorneys willing to participate to reinforce the information covered in the classroom. Also, part of the learning experience includes an essay contest and the opportunity to win first, second and third place medallions.

The Literacy Committee has three requests By Molly Governs, ARW Literacy Chair

1. Please consider using one small period of time to read to a class in any school or preschool. Contact Molly Governs by emailing [email protected] for some tips and short instructions. It has been brought to my attention that some companies will make small donations to the schools on behalf of employees who volunteer their time reading to our children in schools. Ask your employer if they do this.

2. Donations of new or gently used books for elementary aged school children are needed as gifts to children in elementary schools to start their own home libraries.

3. The ARW has published Literacy Cards with tips to parents and caregivers of young children on enhancing the joys of reading. Teachers, please feel free to ask for these cards also. Once again, contact Molly Governs via email ([email protected]) for large or small quantities of these cards to distribute throughout our Las Vegas community.

FIND THE HIDDEN WORD CONTESTWhat’s the Word? …And What’s the Prize?

You have heard about the spoken word, but have you heard about the hidden word? We are running a contest for ARW members only, with some terrific prizes. Since 2012 is such a very important election year to be well informed, and since your Board set priorities this year to increase membership participation, and most especially since our ARW Battle Born Bulletin is award-winning caliber, first prize each month will be a FREE DINNER at Spanish Trails Country Club at our ARW monthly membership meeting (a $30 cash value!) The contest is so easy. All we ask is to read Battle Born and submit your word entry. (Hint: the word will have a patriotic or political meaning.) The word contest comes right from the belly of our newsletter! Here are the details:

1. Read newsletter and make your guess on the word. The Hidden word is a single word (not an expression) and will appear at least five times or more anywhere in the newsletter.

2. One hidden word entry per member per month. The Hidden word must be submitted via email to [email protected]. Subject: ARW Hidden Word Contest.

3. Hidden word entry must be received via email between the 1st and 15th of the month for that month’s meeting. The timestamp of the email will be used to determine if deadline was met.

4. If several people submit correct answer, a winner’s name will be drawn at the ARW meeting of that same month. Winner must be present to win, or another name will be drawn. If no winner is present after five drawings, then we skip the award for one month.

5. Both Full and Associate Members are eligible. ARW Board members are not eligible. But only one free dinner per winner per year.

6. The prize is a free dinner at the next ARW Monthly Meeting of the next consecutive month. You must RSVP and we cannot postpone the award. Other prizes may also be awarded.

The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.' -------------------------- Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. -------------------------- Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say 'Hell' to someone who doesn't care much about you. -------------------------- Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help. --------------------------Miss Charlene Mason sang, 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.-------------------------- For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. -------------------------- Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. -------------------------- Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24th in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.-------------------------- A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.-------------------------- At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir practice.--------------------------Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some of the older ones.--------------------------
