International Student adventure
day at the Blue Mountains with
Mr Gray and the wonderful
Kalang Falls. See page 20
A sure sign that we are fast approaching the end of term is the fact that we are well into semester
one reporting period, with Year 11 having received their reports on Monday 8 June. Students
then participated in report analysis and goal setting interviews for the remainder of the week, with
other grades following soon after.
Congratulations to the twenty Year 11 students who have received a Gold Principal’s award for
this reporting period. A Gold award is awarded for students who achieve a Grade Point Average
of 4.1 and above. Congratulations go to:

YEAR 11 REPORT DISTRIBUTION AND ANALYSIS
GOLD AWARD RECIPIENTS
Congratulations and well done to our 20 recipients. I would also like
to congratulate the 21 recipients of our Silver Principal’s Award.
These students achieved a GPA between 3.6 and 4.04..
Keep up the great work.
During each interview I have reminded each student about
some of the opportunities available to them here at
Barrenjoey. These include:
Have a great week….Jeff Brown
My parting questions to each student included “what do you want your next report to look like” and “will it
reflect the effort put in between now and then?”
In the coming weeks before the end of term, years 8 and 10 will also receive their reports, complete a
report analysis and participate in goal setting interviews with their year advisor or another member of
staff.
I look forward to reading these results and talking to students about their achievements and goals
moving forward.
The Senior Study - Senior students have access to a Senior Study Room which is annexed
to the library and the teacher-librarian is available to help them with their research. Senior
students have Senior Study lessons incorporated in their timetables but of course use the
library during Lunch 1 and 2 as well. Motivated senior students using library resources in a
purposeful way are modelling excellent behaviour for junior students. Ms Kersten is available
to review students’ essays and provide feedback. Ms Kersten can be found in the Senior
Study.
Barrenjoey’s Tutorial Program - Small group tutorials (up to 5 students per session)
are offered to all years at various times throughout the year at a very reasonable
cost. Students are provided with a learning environment where a range of skills are learnt
depending on the subject involved including topic revision, discussions and examination
techniques to name a few.
Please contact Rhondda Woodbridge in the school Library for more information – [email protected]
Study Skills Program –Elevate Education Study Skills Senior Program Extending and Supporting Our Students.
Elevate Education's senior presenters share key research and provide skills and training to
enable parents to help their children navigate their final years of school.
The Parent seminar covers:
Procrastination, study routines, conceptual learning skills, and practice papers
In addition strategies for how the skills can be reinforced at home are discussed
There is also a 40-45 minutes of question/answer session
I am always surprised by the honesty of our students throughout this interview process. Study
harder, be more motivated and work consistently at home are very popular answers when asked what they could do to improve their results.
Students identify barriers to achieving better results include
poor time management, commitments outside of school and distractions (both in and out of school).
Barrenjoey’s Mobile Phone Policy
The School recognises that there are times when it is genuinely appropriate and useful
for students to have access to a mobile phone or similar electronic device – for example,
to contact parents in emergencies or to confirm or change a collection time after school.
It is not necessary, nor acceptable, however, for mobile phones to be switched on or used
during lessons.
The following ‘common sense’ rules apply with respect to mobile phones:
•Courtesy, consideration of and respect for others are paramount at all times.
•They are brought to and kept at school, and used entirely at the owner’s risk. The School
cannot accept any responsibility for theft, loss, damage or health effects (potential or
actual) resulting from mobile phone use. Students and parents should recognise,
however, that mobile phones are a highly prized target for theft and, accordingly, phones
should always be stored in a safe and secure place.
•Parents and students are asked to respect the learning environment. Mobile phones, like
all devices, must be used only under teacher direction for educational purposes. They
should not be used in any manner or place that is disruptive to the normal routines of the
School or to other people. This includes the sending and receiving of phone calls, text
messages or data, taking of photographs or video or using social media.
•These guidelines also refer to the use of mobile phones during field trips, detentions,
excursions or other supervised activities.
The following consequences may apply to policy breaches:
•Confiscation by the teacher for the remainder of the lesson and a negative Sentral entry.
•Repeat offences lead to confiscation for the day. The phone is sent to the front office.
The phone will be secured by the Front Office staff and the student’s name will be
recorded. The phone/device will be signed out to the student at the end of the school day.
•More serious offences will be managed under the Barrenjoey Wellbeing Policy.

BAND NEWS
WHAT A BLAST! Cat Empire's Ross Irwin joins Barrenjoey
High’s Jazz Combo to perform 'The Wine Song'. A most
memorable moment in an unforgettable Big Band Blast at
Port Macquarie over the week-end.
Knowing that Ross was to be a guest of honour at BBB our
Combo decided it would be a fitting tribute to prepare the Wine Song (and hope that Ross heard it!)
Ben arranged this version for Kasey on vocals, Lachlan on Alto Sax, Jack on Tenor, Euan on
Tuba and of course Ben himself on Drums. No sooner had they begun to play than Ross
appeared from somewhere deep within the Panthers Club, where we were playing, and leapt in
with his trumpet.
The Blast organisers were delighted, and put it up on Facebook where it’s had more than 1650
hits in just 2 days! Big Band also played exceptionally well; the best set we’ve ever heard them
play. Wonderful exposure for the Barrenjoey Band program; well done everyone.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE - CAPA
Starting in Term 2 the CAPA faculty has been
running the Artist in Residence program with
local photographer/artist Sally Mayman.
Students from Yr’s 10 and 11 Photography
have been introduced to current photographic
App technology through the 360 degree FLY
virtual reality video camera and this week a
drone video/photography App was used.
Special thanks to Cathie Davies the drone
pilot for her expertise. The students have then
been editing the video to create small movies
to extend their skills in photography.
Sally has also been mentoring several Yr12
Visual Arts students from both Ms Haskett and
Mrs Lenaghan classes with the photomedia
component of their HSC Body of Work. Sally
has assisted with concept development and
photo shoot set up.
Next term Sally will be running an afternoon
program for students who will make a short
film for the Creative Creatures Film Festival.
Thanks to the P&C for their funding and
support of the Artist in Residence program.

There are just over 1.32 sextillion litres of water in the oceans (132

would take about 2,570 billion years (almost 200 times the age of the
universe).

On Sunday 21st May a small group of international students got up at sunrise for a daytrip to
Kanangra-Boyd National Park. For once the Bureau of Meteorology got it wrong in our favour and
the weather was perfect. We stopped at Katoomba on the way up to pick up refreshments for the
day and took the opportunity to take in the view from the Echo Point lookout of the Three Sisters and
a cloud filled Jamison Valley.
From Katoomba our route next took us to Jenolan Caves where we once again used the opportunity
to stretch our legs and take in some scenery. After a climbing out of the valley we entered Kanangra-
Boyd National Park and ventured out to have lunch overlooking Kanangra Walls and Kanangra
Deep.
A steep walk down from near the Kanangra Walls lookout led to Kalang Falls.
Leaving the National park in the afternoon gave us the opportunity to see large mobs of Eastern
Grey Kangaroos and Swamp Wallabies in the large grassy clearings in the forest.
On the long journey home we once again stopped at Katoomba for dinner at a local Pub and some
night viewing of the Three Sisters. We finally reached home about 9pm after a scenery filled journey
of nearly 500km round trip, taking in some of the most spectacular wilderness nearby Sydney.
