BARRENJOEY HIGH SCHOOL’S
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Phone: 9918 8811
The Peninsula Press
Term 2, Week 3
16th May, 2018
Year 7’s enjoying
themselves at camp
last week.
WHAT MATTERS TO ME?
Every year The Whitlam Institute run a writing competition entitled What Matters. Gough
Whitlam's commitment to involving young people in the shaping of Australia's future acts as
inspiration for the competition which is open to NSW, the ACT and Tasmania school students in
years 5 to 12. Responding to the simple question 'what matters?', entrants are free to express
their views on any matter they care about.
This year a number of Barrenjoey students under the guidance of the HSIE faculty have entered
and they make for interesting reading. The quality of our students’ writings always amazes me
and I know you’ll agree with me when you read these two fine examples from our current
submissions.
Harry Young (Year 8)
Money. That’s right, cold hard cash. Dollars, Pounds, Euros, I don’t care, I’ll take
anything, Indian Rupees, Swiss Francs, Brazilian Reals, Icelandic Krona.
I’d trade most things for cash. Except maybe my family, although I could be tempted if it
was enough cash. I’m told that money can’t buy happiness, it can however buy a
penguin, and have you ever seen someone with a penguin who looks unhappy? Me
neither, you can also spread the money out on the floor and make a cash angel.
Apparently, it can’t buy love either. At least according to the Beatles.
It seems though, that even the Beatles were a little torn between money not buying love and it being all
they wanted.
What money can buy you is a big house, a fancy car, a big-ass boat, some designer clothes, first class
travel around the world, and all the nice food and drugs you could possibly want.
Hmmmmmmm Drugs. Anti-cancer drugs, malaria drugs, vaccines, anti-bacterial drugs, anti depressant
drugs. I could go on forever. With all that money I could buy a tonne of drugs and give them to the people
who actually need them.
Look at Bill Gates, of Microsoft fame. He used to be the richest man in the world before Jeff Bezos took
that title, but you know what? He’s the happiest man on the planet now that he’s busy giving away his
money to worthy causes.
Money can buy influence. It can change peoples’ futures. It can coerce people into doing crazy things. Or
wonderful things. It can make them cry, it can make them sing. It can make them dance. Most of all
though, it can make them live.
That’s why I want money, all of it. I want to be able to go to the poorest parts of the world and hose people
with moolah. Buy them some drinking water and something to eat or maybe treat them to some seeds.
Fund construction of houses, schools, hospitals, clean drinking water, proper sanitation, and
infrastructure, you know, the sort of stuff we take for granted in our country but in most ‘3rd world
countries’ where corruption is rife and people are busy starving, perhaps I could make a difference?
Whoever said ‘Money can’t buy happiness’ to them I say “Utter rubbish”. I reckon I’d be pretty happy
doing that.
So, in summary, what I care about is money. Oh, and world peace…
Meg Mulcahy (Year 12)
A teenage boy is sitting alone in a classroom. The room is full yet he’s never felt
more alone. He was up all night trying to get to sleep, trying to turn off the
constant stream of voices in his head. He can’t focus on his work as the voices
won’t let him. His teacher begins to yell at him in front of the class. The other kids
whisper to each other, staring at the boy. He keeps his head down, eyes on his
book. Don’t cry, be a man. This has happened every day for the past 2 years. He
is caught in his own spiraling cycle. He can’t ask for help as he shouldn't need to.
A man wouldn’t need to. 8 boys his age this week will take their lives as they
couldn’t ask for help.1
His son will grow up with the same constant voices in his head. The cycle will continue.
This story represents just 1 of the 2,270 Australian males that take their own lives each year. That’s 6
men every day.3
Too many male Australians take their lives as a way to escape their mental disorders. Deaths by suicide
in Australia occur among males at a rate 3 times greater then that for females.4 There are currently not
enough mechanisms in place to support males mentally suffering. The evidence of this is in the
statistics.
If the evidence shows that young Australians are more likely to take their own life than die in motor
vehicle accidents, why are there mandatory schemes to promote road safety and not mental self care?5
That same teenage boy is now a man. He is 44 and working as a police officer. While doing his job he is
repeatedly exposed to traumatic events. He can’t handle what he sees and turns to alcohol as a way to
mute the voices that continue to talk to him. He can’t speak to anyone about what he is going through. He
is not physically injured so he must not be hurting. He needs to toughen up. He needs to be a man. How
can one of the supposed strongest members of society, the ones that are there to protect others, not
protect themselves? 5 times more police officers going through what he is going through will die as a
result of their own hands, than those killed in a line of duty.2 The man has a wife and two young children.
He won’t be with them for Christmas.
The Australian attitude towards masculinity skews the ability of men to feel like they are able to speak
out about their issues. Not only does this issue need more recognition, it needs a stigma change
surrounding it. This change comes from you.
A man should never be made to feel that it is unmasculin to ask for help.
To seek help is to be a man.

Have a great week…………Ian Bowsher
Well we were blessed on so many levels for our three-day camp to Adventure Land Forster. The
weather really shone for us the whole time (despite the piercingly cold wind on Friday),which
meant that all the activities were available, the camp staff were excellent and the students didn’t
miss their phones one bit.
It was so great to see all the students embrace the opportunity to challenge themselves. To be
perfectly honest, the heights they climbed to would make even the most staunch individual quake
at the knees. No challenge seemed to be too hard or muddy for our students whose unwavering
enthusiasm was contagious. Giant swings, zip-line, team rope challenge, high ropes, water
slides, go-carts, zorb-balls, water slides and the infamous mud-run were included in our daytime
activities.
Very happy to report that the teachers team still won the night-time game of Commandos.
Sometimes the torch is just such a dead give away. Not to mention a thirteen year-olds’ ability to
not do anything quietly!
Our last evening of games was hilarious. I didn’t realise how flexible and strong so many of our
students were. After much laughter and encouraging shouting the students headed up to the
mess hall for a hot chocolate, then bed and not one person complained about the 9:30 lights out
rule.
A wonderful three days with a wonderful bunch of kids.

CHS STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Maeve Gerathy (Year 12) and Annabel Ritchie (Year 11)
represented Sydney North at the CHS State Football
Championships in Wollongong last week. Despite the
team never having played together before they made the
final, and conceded just one goal (in the final) throughout
the tournament.
Well Done ladies!
WINDSURFING
Congratulations to Year 7 student William McMillan who
has been selected for the NSW State Windsurfing Team.
Will endured 15 races at Woollahra last weekend to
make it into the State Team. Awesome effort Will and
good luck with your next competition.
AUSTRALIAN SAILING TEAM
Congratulations to: Bayley Taylor Year 8
Cooper Bellingham Year 7
Eva Attwood Year 7
All three are members of The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club in
Newport and have been selected in the Australian Sailing Team.
They attended a 3 day training camp in Adelaide last weekend as
part of the preparation for their International Regattas later this year.
Bayley and Eva are in the Australian Girl’s Squad and will be sailing their Optis in Hong Kong and Cooper is in the Australian Senior Development Squad competing in Thailand.
SYDNEY NORTH REGIONAL SURFING TITLES
The Sydney North regional Surfing Titles were run and won this Monday &
Tuesday in booming storm surf at Dee Why.
The Junior Boys and Girls competition was actually abandoned in the
afternoon on Monday as the tide pushed in and the swell built, rendering
conditions too treacherous. Halina Morley was the best placed of
Barrenjoey's Juniors, placing 4th in the Girls division after a count back was
needed to decide the winners. Other Junior surfers from Barrenjoey were
Cooper Todd, Archie Mandin, Oliver Heintz and Luke Dujic who were
unlucky not to progress to the finals.
Tuesday was greeted with cleaner conditions with a still powerful swell in the 4-6ft range. Sam
Partington was ultimately victorious in the Senior Boys division with a close 2nd place to Arch
Whiteman. The two boys ultimately took out the senior boys school team title and both boys
qualified for Sydney North Region to compete in the State Schools Surfing Titles at Coffs
Harbour in July in both a team and individual capacity. Sam also scored the highest scoring
wave all day in his first heat: a massive 9.23. Van Whiteman was a contender all day and was
very unlucky not to progress to the final. Forrest Finlay put in a strong start scoring a very high
8.3 on his second wave in round 1, but couldn't quite find another wave to secure his
succession into the quarters, only needing a 2 to progress.
Our two fabulous girls also relished the solid conditions. Tiya Collins going all the way through
to the final earning a hard fought 3rd place. Jacinta Rogers was unlucky narrowly missing a
spot in round two.
Thanks to Ms Clark and Mr Flood for accompanying the team on the days.
Arch Whiteman

KNOCKOUT SOCCER – Bill Turner Trophy
The girls under 15’s Soccer Knockout side travelled to Chatswood High School for their next
round of the Bill Turner Trophy.
With student numbers twice that of Barrenjoey, it was evident that they had a lot of depth to
select a side from and watching them warm up we noted a number of quality players. The
artificial turf pitch provided an extra level of adjustment for our students, having spent years
playing with “the Careel Bay bounce” but as the game started, we quickly clicked into gear. There
were a number of Chatswood forwards and midfielders who played with considerable flair and
ability, but their attacking raids were quickly shut down by our fine backline.
The deadlock was broken by Ashleigh Bateson
who hit a superb shot from outside the box into the
top right of the net. Chatswood quickly replied in a
similar fashion and scored with an equally good
shot. Our players continued to get on top by
shutting down their best players and taking
advantages of space out wide. Their determination
was rewarded with a great finish from team
captain Sophia Holterhoff. Advantage Barrenjoey
at half time.
After this Chatswood were never allowed to get back into the game and we ran out winners.
I couldn’t have asked for more from the players with everyone doing their job and playing
with skill and determination, even in the face of some hostility from the pro-Chatswood
crowd! Well done girls – our next game is in the next few weeks.
Andrew Grunseit// Coach
Head Teacher Mathematics
After a well earned break we came out and dominated, with fresh substitute Pia Robinson
capitalising on some good lead up work from Ava Lloyd and Ashleigh to put us 3 – 1 up.
Within 2 minutes Pia followed through on a fumble from the keeper and calmly put the ball in the back of the net for a 4 – 1 lead.
