Shockwave festival flicks the switch Blackall was inundated with

young people from across western Queensland last weekend for the third annual Shockwave festival which saw around 500 people attend the event.

Young people from a range of places including Charleville, Longreach, Doomadgee and Winton flocked into Blackall for the celebration of creative arts with professional arts workers running workshops in theatre, stencil art, visual arts, light graffiti, DJ-ing and hip hop dance throughout the day on Saturday.

Minister of Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business Jan Jarrat even made an appearance at the event.

Throughout the day festival goers were able to enjoy activities including skateboarding, cupcake decorating, roving theatre performances, post-it prose and the community markets.

Young photographers roamed

around the festival taking portraits for a photographic projection screened on the side of the hall in the evening, whilst budding artists were able to transform the skate park table with graffiti stencil art and musicians performed in the acoustic sound lounge.

Bands, dancers and artists from Blackall, Barcaldine, Longreach, Ilfracombe, Isisford, Charleville and Brisbane performed throughout the afternoon with Blackall duo Rodzentwo, made up of Naomi and Dylan Dolinski kicking off proceedings.

They were followed by Stevie Naylor from Longreach, Coleman Wakefield from Longreach, Ashley Donald and Emily Cameron from Barcaldine, Dalby singers Melinda and Bree Wells and Dylan Dolinski performing a drum solo.

It was then time for dance to shine with performances from the Retro Pixies Dance Crew from Ilfracombe, Longreach dance

groups Shadows of Angles, Ron’s Remix and Rubik’s Crew, Dance Blackall, Blackall’s own hip hop crew, the Edrine Keegan school of Ballet from Roma, Brisbane dancer Storm Tierna and Bekky and Errol from Fresh Elements Dance in Brisbane.

The main live music portion included sets from Longreach band Minor Details, Brisbane hip hop artist Candy Bowers, a DJ battle between Brisbane’s DJ Nic C and Longreach’s DJ Sweet Beats with Charleville metalcore band Mary Celeste as the headline act for night

After the live music portion of the evening concluded, Blackall’s youth flocked into the Memorial Hall for a disco with DJ sets by DJ Nick C, DJ Sweet Beats and DJ Dave.

Sunday morning saw the festival conclude with a skateboard, scooter and BMX competition.

Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business Jan Jarratt met up with mayor Jan Ross to have a look around the festival on Saturday.

From the Editor

The finale weekend of the Heartland Festival certainly did light up the west. The entertainment on Friday night at the showgrounds by Mary G and musicians was great, a fun night with Dr Mark Bin Bakar! Thanks to our staff for their efforts in making this “Caring for our Minds and Body” evening happen here in Blackall and also thanks go to all the Allied Health Agencies from the Royal Flying Doctor Service right through to Queensland Health Quit Program, who were present on the evening.

Minister for Tourism and Small Business Jan Jarratt paid a flying visit to Blackall on Saturday morning and was able to take in the Shockwave workshops and speak with many young people during this time. There was time for a sausage in bread and very brief tour of the town and tourist attractions before it was time to board the state government jet. As the visits by Ministers are few and far between, I was pleased to be able to welcome Minister Jan Jarrat to Blackall and acquaint her with some of the projects and plans which have come into being over the past 3 ½ years.

Shockwave 2011 flicked the switch with an amazing program which proved to be a young person’s paradise. However it was also very well supported by the community in general with numbers attending consistent with last year’s 500. Congratulations to the organising team lead by Creative Pathways’

Brooke Newall. The site plan and layout was far

more user friendly with a concern for conservation and the environment . There was considerable thought given to the recycling and use of all items which were there to be used or had been already used. I especially liked the love heart constructed by using large water containers and a bit of bling to create something unusual but sensational.

The skate park was the place for action on scooters, skateboards and bikes, with skillful stunts and daredevil speed!

There was singing and song composition with Melinda Wells, craft a plenty with necklaces, hair ornaments and face painting with Duncan, Jo and Sue and hip hop routines by Bekky and Errol of Fresh Elements from Brisbane.

Storm Teina of Brisbane danced so well, Candy Bowers wowed the audience with comedy and dance and local talent was able to get a gig as well.

Food, that most necessary of all items, was provided at appropriate intervals and the Blackall CWA provided breakfast on Sunday morning for all participants.

Young folk from Doomadgee, Cairns and Shepparton as well as from those centers closer to us all made the journey to Blackall to be a part of this growing event in our Region. Blackall really did get behind this event in 2011! Well done!

--Jan Ross

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Over the last few weeks, there has been a plethora of events held in Blackall, giving our community first rate opportunities that aren’t afforded to every town in rural Queensland. It therefore makes me sad that support for these events has not been anywhere near as high as it could have been.

It is disappointing to hear people complain that there is nothing to

do in Blackall and to then see them fail to attend the events which are held, including free ones.

Community support often makes all the difference when it comes to the success of an event. When an event draws a large crowd, it makes it easier to continue to host such large events in the town.

I hope to see a large part of the community turn out for the

events scheduled throughout the coming months. There will be performances of radio plays, film screenings, a trivia night, races and much more.

Hopefully this show of support starts this weekend with a good crowd at the showgrounds tonight to herald the return of Friday night football to Blackall. Go the Magpies!

A graphic display of sunsets and sunrises at the Grassland Art Gallery in Tambo on Sunday was a fitting way to bring the 2011 Blackall Heartland Festival to a close.

A number of people gathered at the gallery for the opening of the photographic exhibition curated by the Tambo Arts Council for the festival and heard president Danielle Butler say that finishing the festival on such a high note was a testament to the depth of cultural pursuits available in the region.

“We hope it also opens the door for emerging and new artists,” she said.

Photography has become an integral part of the Heartland Festival and Danielle noted that it had a very strong following in the

region.“It is wonderful that there is

an avenue for photographers to display and promote their artform within such a beautiful gallery here at Tambo,” she said.

“The Lighting up the West theme has provided us with images of our western sunrises, sunsets and landscapes that are unique to our part of the world and which visitors remark on with a sense of awe.”

Tambo Arts Council vice president Kiralee Fox commented that it was exciting to see the talent that was in abundance in the region’s photographers.

The opening was followed by an afternoon of music provided by former Tambo resident Barry Cochrane and his singing quartet Les Chansons.

The photographic opening was

the final event in a busy weekend

for the festival, beginning with the

Mary G show, which concentrated

on health issues in an entertaining

way, and was continued by

the Shockwave Festival and its

hundreds of young people visiting

for a weekend of live music and

creativity in the heart of western

Queensland, and the popular

Tambo Cup race meeting.

“It has been a huge undertaking

but has been very worthwhile once

again,” Danielle said.

In social pairs Tex Hayward and

Lew Kelly were too good for Julie and Roland Blucher, winning 28-12.

In other social games, Hazel, Brad and Graham from Dubbo beat Lauretta, Roy and visitor Gumby 14-12. In the other game Judy, Betty and Trevor defeated Tracy, Woody and Wayne 11-5.

Artists in the Blackall-Tambo region are rapidly creating works for the Grassland Art Gallery’s local exhibition, ‘Outback Inspirations, Twenty Eleven’.

Following the success of the inaugural local exhibition in 2010, curator Cassie Swanson is looking to showcase the diverse talents of the Community by collating works in a variety of media including watercolors, oils, charcoal, acrylics, mixed media, silver work and glass art.

Cassie said she had high hopes that this year’s exhibition would be an even greater success than last year’s.

“This year’s exhibition is an exciting opportunity for local artists to display their work, and also for residents and tourists to view and purchase local art work,” Cassie said.

Last year’s exhibition attracted a great deal of attention and swelled the confidence of the artists some of whom were exhibiting and selling their work for the first time.

President of the Tambo Arts Council, Kim Davidson has been impressed with the high level of sales through the gallery since its opening and expects “Outback Inspirations, Twenty Eleven” to afford artists the opportunity to present and sell their work to a wide audience.

The opening event will be a lunchtime affair accompanied by jazz music resonating in the courtyard area at the Grassland Art Gallery on Sunday, July 10.

It was an historic occasion last weekend for the Anglican, Catholic, and Uniting Church western Queensland faith communities as they gathered with the bishops and leaders of their communities.

An informal gathering and discussion was held on Sunday evening at St Patrick’s Parish Centre with Catholic Bishop of Rockhampton, Brian Heenan, Anglican Bishop of Rockhampton, Godfrey Fryer, and the Presbytery

Treasurer of the Uniting Church of Central Queensland, Gavin Caird, from Gladstone.

Around 50 people attended the gathering which saw the discussion on topics such as changes in the church communities, the shortage of ministers in western churches and future plans, with questions invited from the parishioners.

After question time the crowd shared in a short liturgy and a light meal.

Local church leaders Rev Beth O’Neill, Rev Scott Ballment and Fr Matthew Moloney were all present at the gathering, with time taken to welcome Fr Ronaldo Rodriguez to Blackall.

His provincial leader, Fr Tim Norton, travelled from Sydney to be in Blackall for the weekend to share some time with Fr Ronaldo as he settles into western Queensland.

This is happening in QLD right now. With over 80,000 coal seam gas wells planned in QLD alone, and 30,000 in northern Central Queensland from Rockhampton to the Northern Territory border, will this experimental mining threaten the future of our land operations, water supplies (including the Great Artesian Basin), air quality and health, as it has in the U.S. as shown in the film Gasland? Is coal any different?

A night of comedy with Mary GThere was laughter in the air

at the Blackall showgrounds on Friday night as indigenous comedian Dr Mark Bin Bakar took to the stage as his celebrated alter ego, Mary G.

The performance was part of the Communities Caring for Mind and Body tour which has seen Dr Bin Bakar perform across western Queensland in Winton, Longreach, Boulia and Blackall.

Mary G first made her debut in 1992 when Dr Bin Bakar created the character as part of his radio show on Broome station Radio Goolarri.

Since then Mary G’s popularity has grown and Dr Bin Bakar now tours Australia with back-up band The G-Spots, broadcasting his radio show using a mobile radio studio.

Dr Bin Bakar was named West Australian of the Year in 2007 and received an award for excellence in film in 2005 at the Deadly Awards celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence in music, sport, entertainment and community.

Blackall concert goers were able to enjoy a barbecue dinner provided by the Blackall State School Creative Generation dance troupe with Blackall duo Rodzentwo, made up of Naomi and Dylan Dolinski providing music early in the evening.

There were also health and wellbeing stalls to peruse from organisations such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Anglicare.

The event was sponsored by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Blackall Tambo Regional Council.
