Dr Viney Joshi from the BlackallHospital and Black Stump MedicalCentre has been named Presidentof ADTOA (Australian DoctorsTrained Overseas Association).

The announcement was madeearlier this month following theretirement of Andrew Schwartzfrom the position.

Dr Joshi, who has been Chairmanof the ADTOA Queensland boardfor around 4 years, says thathaving been approached bymembers of the national board he

was more than pleased to acceptthe position of President of theorganisation.

I feel that it is important thatthe position has been given to adoctor, an internationally-trainedgraduate; one that has beenthrough all the teething problemsthat IMGs (international medicalgraduates) go through. Trained in Delhi, India, Dr

Joshi has beena practicingdoctor for 27 years in India,the Middle East,parts of Africaand Australia. Hemoved to Australiain 1995 and hasbeen working inBlackall for 12years.

One of his mainconcerns with

the system is thelack of medicalsupport given to internationally-trained medical graduates in theirrst years in Australia.

As temporary residents, they arenot entitled to Medicare.

Dr Joshi says that this issomething he hopes to change.

It is a little bit hypocriticalthat these doctors are working

for the Medicare system, but theythemselves are not entitled toaccess that same system.

Other than the occasional tripto Canberra, Dr Joshi said thattaking on the role of ADTOAPresident will not mean he is awayfrom Blackall any more frequentlythan he currently is; just a lot moretime spent on the telephone.

BLACKALLs Josh McErleanand his family recently travelledto Perth to attend the SchoolSport Australia SwimmingChampionships, the largest eventon the National School SportProgram. The championships were held

from September 12 to 18, withmore than 800 students fromacross Australia, aged from 10 to

19 years, competing in a range ofswimming events. Josh competed in four events;

50 metre breast stroke, 50 metrebuttery, 50 metre freestyle relayand swam the buttery leg in the50 metre medley relay.

In all events Josh broke hispersonal best times and in the 50metre freestyle relay Josh and histeam came second, winning thesilver medal.

School Sport Australia SwimmingConvener Simon Warren said thatthe swimmers in attendance were

the best young swimmers in thecountry.

SSA Executive Ofcer SteveKalend described the competitionas erce between all competitors,as many of the swimmers wereevenly matched.

One game of social bowls lastSunday resulted in a dead heat of14-14 between Cookie and Dallyagainst Loretta and Wayne.

Blackall bowlers went very well inthe big weekend at Quilpie. Whilenot quite winning the big money,Blackall bowlers won the highestscore in each of the three roundswith Gary Whiteld and Rob Doyleonly 3 behind the winners from

Cunnamulla.Next week at the bowls club pairs

play starts at 9am. R Browningand J Bowyer will play L Kelly andT Hayward. D and J Carter will goup against M and C Pngst.

Names are required to travel toBarcaldine on October 18. Anyonewanting a game should contact theclub as soon as possible.

Zone 14 pony club membershave returned from the Pony Club

state titles in Gympie proud oftheir efforts against some of thebest riders in the state and a teamfrom NSW.

On day one riders competedin the State Gymkhana whichconsisted of all disciplinesincluding best presented, hack,girl riders, sporting, time trial andshowjumping.

All riders had a strong nish, well up in the top end of theircompetition.

Alisha Woods, Caitlin Johnstoneand Sara Aspinall each received aplace.

Zone 14 riders were able to showthe city that the Yahoo Horses

and kids from the bush have whatit takes with both local teams

nishing in the top 10 of 39 junio rteams.

Concluding the event on the thirdday with the sporting competition,Alisha and Caitlin again placed toreceive ribbons while the rest ofteam did extremely well placingin the top half of the competition;gaining some top 10 times. The bush horses struggled

with the damp turf. Next yearthe competition will be held inTheodore.

Zone 14 pony club members will have alternative trainingmethods to enhance their mountspreparation.

To top off last weeks record-breaking attendance of 103 youngpeople for a night out in BanksPark, the Blackall BluelightAssociation were pleased to nalise

the amount of money raised fromthe Sportsmans Dinner heldearlier in the year.

A total of $5,742.60 wasraised from the evening, whichorganiser Melissa McKay says wasfantastic.

There was quite a hold-up withthe paperwork but it has beenworth the wait.

St Josephs operated the bar while the State School studentsserved and waited on the tables.

Each school was offered $500

from the evening in addition to afurther donation depending on theoutcome of the night.

Brent Gerber said that thecommittee was pleased to be in

a position to donate signicantlymore than the initial $500 to theschools and have some funds toput towards future events. The Bluelight Association were

also pleased with news that theBlackall Tambo Regional Councilhas offered the shed at the skatepark for storage of all Bluelightequipment.

Council Sports and RecreationOfcer Lisa Goodman was involvedin organising the shed.

as it ts the MERV trailer as wellas all the camping and canoeingequipment.

The WORK crew have been in toclean it out and we are all ready to

move in. To celebrate this event and to

show the people of Blackall theequipment that Bluelight hasacquired over time, there will be anOpening of the Shed Celebrationon Wednesday, October 14 at theskate park shed.

At the opening, Bluelight willalso present both schools withcheques from the SportsmansDinner along with a free sausagesizzle/BBQ between 5 and 6pm.

Monday nights kick offA group of active residents of

Blackall have taken the initiativeand started up team sports nighton Monday evenings. The regularevent will provide a opportunity forcommunity members to participate

in sports that are otherwise not onoffer.The rst competition kicks off this

Monday, October 12 with ag footyat the Blackall showgrounds.

Each sport will be played for a 5or 6 week period, enough to buildup some substantial skills, and will then rotate through differentteam sports. The organisers are hoping that

they will get a good turn up.Participants may either create

their own teams for the evening,or turn up and make teams on thenight. At no cost, the night kicksoff at 6.30pm for an hour everyMonday night.

A few spots of rain to report, just enoughto remind us that it still does rain! Certainlyvery pleased no further heavy dust in theair for us however a bit of dust is not toobad when you consider the devastation andloss of life in Samoa after the tsunami andthe earthquake on the island of Sumatra inIndonesia. We are extremely fortunate.This past weekend proved to be one of social events with

the visit to our region by the Goondiwindi Garden Club. Thetour visited country and town gardens, eight in total. Thebenet to our community is considerable from a nancialpoint of view as well as from the promotional point of viewas word of mouth is always the best promotion. I knowthe visitors went home extremely tired but delighted withall they had experienced over the days they were here. Mycongratulations to the gardeners of the region; I believe thegardens were outstanding.The National Rugby League nal played in Sydney saw the

Melbourne Storm prevail over the Parramatta Eels in a hardfought game. After a season of being in the top few teams the

win was well deserved.The football season is over for the year, I was extremely

disappointed to have missed the Blackall Junior RugbyLeague Club presentation ceremony held at the Blackallshowgrounds multipurpose centre on Sunday, October 4 at9am. The conclusion of the season is the highlight of the year.

The club ofcials are able to report to the members, presentawards to the players who have benetted from the trainingsessions as well as from the experience of playing the game.Good sportsmanship, team spirit, friendship, activity andloads of fun would be high on the list of advantages. Parentstoo are to be congratulated as they are prepared to give uptheir time to ensure the budding players are at the gameand attending training sessions. I am sure the teams playedvery well and very fairly, my congratulations to all. The quest to have a further meeting with Queensland

Transport and Main Roads Minister Rachael Nolan isprogressing to what I hope will be a successful conclusion. I

will keep you posted as to the developments however PLEASEWRITE and COMPLAIN about this most inadequate airlineservice. Write to Qantas, add weight to our protestations.WE DESERVE FAR BETTER THAN THIS!!

Work is commencing on the new Blackall wash-downfacility at the saleyards. This will be a great improvementall up. Pavement repairs are being carried out on theLandsborough Highway on the Blackall-Barcaldine section.Work on the Emmett Road also continues to advance. The

Tambo branch of the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council isengaged in repair of ood damage to the Mt Playfair Road.

We have welcomed Mr Dean Kneebone to the Blackallofce on a temporary appointment, while the Manager ofCorporate and Community Services and the Coordinator ofthe Tambo Multipurpose Centre are on leave. Dean brings a

wealth of diverse experience to our Council workforce.On Tuesday, October 13 the Blackall Club is hosting a free

informal and fun information session with key speaker FrankTeam on key strategies and skills for career and employmentpathways. Phone 4657 4711 for further information.

As the dry weather continues, Climate Risk StateCoordinator, Lew Markey of Primary Industries and Fisherieshas stated that IDP declarations are available to all drought-

declared primary producers operating enterprises involvedin primary production. Eligibility for an IDP declaration isbased on a variety of factors. Application forms can be foundat the Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries website

Wakakirri, a theatricaldramatisation of the life of EdgarTowner, performed by around 60Blackall State School primarystudents, has been recognised withan Order of Australia AssociationPrimary Schools CitizenshipAward.

Representatives of the school

will be attending the presentationceremony at QueenslandParliament House on Monday,October 19.

Alison Mobbs said that the schoolwas honoured that the project hadbeen recognised at such a highlevel.

She went on to say that the

project was aimed to encouragegood citizenship, createawareness about people from localcommunities who have contributedin combat to maintainingAustralias freedom and to buildon the Towner committees effortsto honour Edgar Towner with astatue.

The Edgar Towner story is onethat the people in the communitycan relate to, including the

students and they wanted tochoose it.Rochelle Robinson who was

involved in the project said thatshe felt it was important thatthey were documenting the lifeof someone who was not onlylocal, and a hero, but also an ex-student of the state school.

Ross Dwyer, the Honorary

Secretary of the Order ofAustralia Association said thatsuch projects demonstratedthe diversity of exciting andinteresting activities promotingcommitment to and pride inAustralian citizenship.

The garden at McLean Place has been revitalizedwith the addition of a mural by Brisbane-based artistChristian Grifths. Christian designed and paintedthe 4 x 4 metre mural on the wall beside the famousBushmans Hotel. The wall is used for the boostersystem for the new extension at McLean Place. The concept is based on an imaginative outlook

contrasted with the traditional bush or outbackscene.

Christian used acrylic and aerosol paints to bringthe formal garden and water feature to life in theMcLean Place garden.

Funded by the Blackall Tambo Regional Council,the mural was painted over three days and can beviewed from the ramp leading to the new extension.

Stockwell said the mural has created a tranquilatmosphere in the outside area for residents andstaff to enjoy.

More than sixty people tookthe time to visit the Top 150:Documenting Queenslandexhibition while it was on show inBlackall this week. The exhibition, on tour around

Queensland with the QueenslandArts Council, was at the BlackallLiving Arts Centre from October5-7.

Blackall Cultural AssociationPresident Sally Campbell tookthe opportunity to commend theextensive refurbishment of theBlackall Living Arts centre as aresult of a Gritty Places grant.

It really is a wonderful facelift.Barry Muir said he had hoped

many more people would visit theexhibition as it documented animportant part of, and valuableasset to Blackalls history.

It warmed my heart that theJack Howe scrapbook made it ontothis list.The exhibition featured an extract

from Jack Howes scrapbookcontaining clippings of his shearingcareer which extended beyond hisretirement in 1900. The exhibition also contained

other documents of relevanceto Blackall, including the 1891Shearers Strike Manifesto, the1868 Crown Land Alienation Actand the 1884 Land Act.

Entitled Literacy a Pathwayto Success, the program is partof the Literacy and NumeracyNational Partnership, the focusof the program is on literacy, withimproved reading comprehension

being targeted. Assessment dataconsistently shows that studentsoral reading (ie. uency, accuracy,and expression) is not matchedby equivalent understanding andcomprehension skills.

During 2009 and 2010, theprogram will include a wide varietyof strategies such as professionaldevelopment for teachers andsupport staff in areas of literacy,continued assessment andmonitoring of student progress,building strong curriculumleadership and effective teamworkthroughout the school, providingappropriate quality resourcesand setting targets and tailoringprograms to support reading skills

Are aliens attacking the Sea of Japan?Not exactly, these gigantic blobs are unwelcomevisitors from another place. These wiggly, pinkishgiants called Nomuras jellysh can weigh up to

204 kilograms thats as heavy as a male lion andthey're swarming by the millions.These large sea creatures are normally found offthe coasts of China and Korea, but occasionallydrift east into the Sea of Japan to feed on tinyorganisms called plankton. But now one hundredtimes the usual number of jellysh is invadingJapanese waters.The shermen's nets are getting broken byhundreds of Nomura's. The jellysh crush, slime,and poison valuable sh in the nets, such as thetuna and salmon that the shermen rely on tomake a living.No-one knows for sure what's causing this jellyshtrafc jam. It's possible that oceans heated byglobal warming are creating the perfect jellysh

breeding ground. Another theory is that overshing has decreased the numbers of some sh,which may allow the jellies to chow down withoutcompetition for food. For now, all the shermencan do is design special nets to try to keepthe jellies out. Some of them hope to turn thecatastrophe into cash by selling jellysh snacks.Peanut butter and jellysh, anyone?

Last month on September 10, Blackallthermometers stooped down to 5 degrees; 7degrees cooler than the average minimumtemperature for September. A maximum of37.3 degrees was reached on September 21. The average maximum temperature was

30.1 degrees, three degrees warmer than thenorm, while the average minimum was 11.9degrees. Temperatures in Tambo ranged from 2.9

degrees on September 9 to a top of 36 degreeson September 21.

Both towns received a small amount of rainearly in the month on September 4. Tamborecorded 22 points (5.8mm) while Blackallmeasured 33 points (8.4mm). September 2008was a better picture with 242 points (61.6mm)recorded in Blackall.

On average in September, Blackall receives68 points (17.4mm). The record for the highestrainfall recorded in a single September day inBlackall was over a century ago in 1890 with244 points (62.2mm). The most rain recordedover a September month has been standingfor 103 years, set back in 1906. The maximum recorded wind gust in

Blackall was 61 km per hour from the northon September 22 at 1129 hours, bringing thedust into town.

Goondiwindi gardeners visit westThe Goondiwindi Garden Club this week travelled to the

Central West and visited a selection of Blackalls propertyand town gardens.

With 28 of their 200 garden club members on tour, ina whirlwind weekend, the group visited Mt Enniskillen,Gillespie, Kyneton, Ravensbourne, Dumfries, Listowel

Downs and Terrick Terrick. The tour concluded in Blackallwith a morning visit to the gardens of Jenny and BarryMuir, and Lynette Davison.

Goondiwindi Garden Club member Marian Marshallsaid that she had been overwhelmed with the roses inBlackall.
