• NEW! Starting with 11.2.0.2.0, upgrades are no

longer delivered as patchsets, but as full installs

("out of place upgrade")

• Implications:

—New Oracle Home needed for each upgrade

—More disk space required

—No need to install base release then

immediately patch

—Quarterly CPUs and PSUs will be applied to

the 4-digit release

—Easier fall-back in case of problems

—Should probably name the Oracle_Home with

4 digit release

Upgrading to Oracle 11gR1/R2

• Install 11gR1 or 11gR2 Database

• Install 11gR1 or 11gR2 Client

• Install 11gR1 or 11gR2 Examples (replaces

Companion CD)

• Pre-upgrade check script utl111i.sql or

utl112i.sql (or included in DBUA)

• Take note of INVALIDS

• Fix .profile, banenv, oratab files

• DBUA (or manual) to upgrade database(s)

• Collect database statistics

• Recompile C, COBOL, Forms

11g Database, what you need to know?

• Database password case sensitivity (OPTIONAL)

• Password profile limits (unlimited was the norm, no longer in 11g)

• No passwords on Default roles (Ban_default_connect for example)

• Start considering moving away from file system structures, and explore ASM.

• Auto Memory Management, good or bad idea?

• 11.2.0.2 fixes a lot of bugs….

• RMAN is the standard now….

• GRID before dbconsole….recommended.

• Compatibility is key within your spfile/init file…

• Diagnostic Parameters changes….— No longer located under

/u01/app/oracle/admin/Dbname/cdump, etc…



Version control with additional applications

• ODS/EDW = 11.2.0.1 (8.1/8.2 versions)

• Development testing, hopeful of certification by early

March 2011.

• Luminis DB is supported with 11gR2

• DegreeWorks DB is supported with 11gR2

• UC4 DB is supported with 11gR2

• INB requires 10.1.2.3 or 11g Fusion Middleware

• SSB requires 10.1.2.3, 10.1.3 or 11g Fusion

Middleware

NOTE: If using Cascade or FM Needs Analysis, this

requires an OC4J Instance, which isn’t available with

10.1.2.3 or 11g Fusions Middleware. Which means,

10.1.3 will need to be installed separately.
