BAM2014 CONFERENCE REPORT

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The BAM2014 Conference was held over 3 days at the Belfast Waterfront from 9

th-11

th September 2014,

hosted by the University of Ulster. BAM2014 was lower in attendance than 2013 with 800 delegates

registering. However BAM2014 was the biggest in terms of papers with 917 being submitted. 669 of these

papers were presented and 742 delegates attended from 50 countries.

Following on from the success of BAM2013, there were no major changes made to the BAM2014 Conference.

Of the 800 people that registered for the conference, 227 delegates (28%) of delegates have been kind enough

to provide BAM with their feedback of the event. The feedback has been positive, however there are small

areas which BAM could improve upon for next year.

KEY DEMOGRAPHICS

800 participants registered in total

93% attendance (742 delegates)

Delegates from 50 different countries registered for BAM2014

23% of registrations (175) were from academics based internationally, a decrease of 29% (243) in

2013

228 (30%) 30% of delegates attended the PDW’s, down 3% from 2013

42% of delegates were either full-time or part-time students

357 (48%) of delegates were first time delegates

250 institutions were represented at BAM2014, a decrease of 84 from BAM2013 conference.

The gender breakdown is as follows: Male (46%), Female (54%) (estimated based on delegate

feedback)

KEY FEEDBACK

The location was very unpopular as a whole, with many delegates unhappy at the outside noise, lack

of space and the distance (in particular, St George’s Market)

The catering wasn’t popular this year, with a lack of snacks at refreshment breaks being a key issue in

addition to a lack of choice of foods..

Navigation of the venue was a big problem this year

The mean satisfaction of BAM website scored a mean average of 6.

44% of the delegates said they would go to the BAM conference again.

All aspects of the BAM administration scored above a mean average of “good”

60% of delegates would use a conference mobile app if there was one available.

Navigation of the BAM website was the only technical aspect of the conference that scored below a

mean score of “good”

June, July and September are the best months for delegates to attend year round events.

The mean likelihood that delegates will recommend the BAM Conference has increased slightly from

7.46 to 7.52 (out of 10).

PDW’s and the New Members Welcome Breakfast were popular and should continue next year.

The vast amount of opportunities to network was a real plus for many delegates.

SUGGESTIONS

BAM shouldn’t host an out of town conference again if possible. Delegates would also prefer a single

building if possible.

If rooms are far away from exhibition halls, BAM could consider additional refreshment points in

between.

BAM could investigate simplifying the registration process and add membership fees to the

conference price.

BAM should provide a conference app like AOM as it will keep everybody in contact after the event.

To help delegates navigate the conference, BAM could provide maps of the rooms, in addition to

getting more volunteers or paid temps to act as guides at key points.

BAM could consider providing seating areas to facilitate networking and collaboration.

BAM could consider certificates for attendees of the conference.

BAM should consider having the gala dinner on the Thursday night instead of Wednesday so that

attendance for Thursday events is high.

Delegates feel the plenary session needs to be more thought provoking and engaging.

BAM needs to make the Meet the Authors session needs a separate slot as delegates didn’t find it

useful having it at lunchtime. Additionally the session needs to be given more publicity as delegates

found it difficult to locate where it was.

Delegates want to know who the participants of the Meet the Authors session are in advance of the

session.

PLEASE RATE YOUR SATISFACTION WITH EACH OF THE FOLLOWING ITEMS RELATED TO

THE VENUE OF THE BAM2014 CONFERENCE.

69% of respondents provided feedback regarding the venue.

Main Complaints

The lack of a commercial food and beverage outlet in or around the venue meant that delegates were

dependant on BAM for all their catering. Many people felt that BAM didn’t compensate for this, with the most

common complaints being:

Lack of snacks at refreshment breaks

Lack of fresh food at lunch such as fruit, vegetables and salad

No soft drinks provided at breaks or lunch other than water

In terms of the location of the venue, many delegates found that the distance between the hotels and the

venue provided too many logistical challenges and wasn’t conducive for a successful conference. A number of

delegates were unhappy with the additional noise surrounding the location, particularly in St George’s Market

and found the conditions cramped.

Other Complaints

In terms of the venue, there was a general feeling that in selecting an unusual setting there were compromises

made in terms of conference facilities, such as:

Multiple buildings make it difficult to switch between sessions

The parallel sessions were not adequate, with venues being cold and very noisy.

Rooms were located too close together and noise from other conferences could be heard.

Delegates felt that the makeshift cabins located in the market, compared to the posh conference

rooms in The Hilton, made it difficult for delegates to engage and listen to the workshops going on in

and around the market

The service at the Gala Dinner was too slow

In terms of organisation, delegates found the rooms hard to find and there were lots of requests for more

guides, better signage and more detailed maps.

All comments

Improve quality of Gala Dinner food and wine – not seen as good value

Gala Dinner venue that works better for networking

The meeting rooms for PDW’s were too small.

Improve the quality of food.

More guides to help delegates find buildings

Provide space for meetings,

Location should have accommodation nearby/

Find a venue where delegates don’t have to walk outside in the rain between sessions.

Provide a Conference map of the venue, hotels and Gala Dinner.

Provide more refreshments.

Provide more local tourist information.

More fresh food to be provided such as fruit, vegetables and salad.

Additional coffee points for refreshment breaks in outer building.

Provide juice and/or fizzy drinks at refreshment breaks.

THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE BAM2014 CONFERENCE.

28% of respondents provided comments on the administration of the BAM conference.

Main Complaints

Map of rooms required, not just buildings. Several delegates complained that finding rooms was just

too difficult and this could be improved with maps, signs and / or more guides.

Delegate packs were not useful and there was a lack of information in them which disappointed some

delegates.

Communications

Although a number of people asked for information earlier, in comparison to previous years there was

significantly fewer.

The level of communication from the office on the whole seems to be appropriate, despite a small number of

delegates feeling that condensing the number of emails would prove far better.

Other Comments

Ask delegates in advance if they need a certificate of attendance, giving them at registration

Delegates wanted the conference programme and timings available further in advance

The vast amount of emails before the conference was distracting to some delegates

Notify best paper winners in advance so that they can collect the award at AGM

Make sure volunteers have a vast understanding of the location and awareness of what is going on.

THE ONLINE ASPECTS OF THE BAM2014 CONFERENCE.

28% of respondents provided comments on the website features

Main Complaints

Navigation - Perhaps the most common complaints were about the difficulties users had in navigating the

website. Some users complained that there was too much information, so they had to “study” the website to

find what they needed.

Registration Process - The registration process also came up a number of times, with users wanting a)

membership to be on the same form and b) have the facility for institutions to pay for delegates using a

membership number instead of requiring log-in details.

Log-in Requirements - Another common issue was the log-in requirements. Some users find it difficult to

remember their user-name and passwords, and others were annoyed that there were individual log-ins for

both the website and the conference.

Other Comments

Some users complained that information on the website could have been updated.

Delegates want USB sticks provided.

Some delegates argued that the online proceedings should be accessible without a log in as then they

can use them as evidence of proceedings for their institutions

28% of respondents gave feedback on the sessions

Paper Sessions

Quality – a significant number of the comments made were relating to the quality of the papers

presented. Some suggested that BAM should be stricter, accepting fewer but higher quality papers.

Discussion – Very good feedback/questions received during full paper presentation, delegates claimed

this was most useful.

PDWS

The PDW sessions were good, however some delegates were annoyed they got turned away, despite

turning up to the session early

The quality of PDW’s could have been better in terms of selection of speakers – delegates stated it

felt more like a lecture than a PDW.

Some delegates would of preferred if the PDW’s were run on separate days

Side events were a good idea – sessions for New Members, Doctoral Students, PDW’s and Meet The

Authors were well received.

Plenaries

Would be good to have more than one plenary, in particular on the final day

Plenaries could be more thought provoking

A small number of delegates stated the opening plenary seemed to lack cohesion and lacked purpose.

Opening plenary could be a more engaging format

Opening plenary could be improved by having a big hitting academic rather than a shallow set of

presentations that happened.

New Members Breakfast

New Members Breakfast should include a more formal introduction to BAM

New Members Breakfast was very rigidly arranged by SIGs, and people weren't really mingling with

each other. Some tables only had one person on them

The food choices were very limited at the New Members Breakfast. Delegates wanted more variety in

food choices i.e. fresh fruit.

Additional Comments

BAM has lost its identity and has a different business model compared to previous years.

Tech was problematic at meet the editors sessions

BAM could consider having less developmental sessions as it does not leave enough time for

discussions. Furthermore, delegates have argued there should be stricter instructions with regards to

hand-outs as many PowerPoint slides were being circulated around the discussions, with delegates

questioning that this goes against the objective of a development session

Attendance on Thursday session poor –ensure BAM sessions don’t conflict with paper sessions.

BAM could hold developmental paper sessions through Skype, so that participants from distant

locations can attend remotely.

Accommodate larger rooms for sessions.

Some sessions presenters did not show up – suggest that BAM should be more stricter with this.

IF NO, PLEASE STATE THE REASON WHY?

No interest.

Did not find them until late in the conference. Didn’t look that interesting and I had more interesting

things to do.

I didn’t know what I would get from this and spent my time networking.

Time restrictions

Too many activities going on around the same time.

I was not adequately motivated to prioritise this over other events

I was mainly in St George’s Market and the stands were at the Belfast waterfront – therefore didn’t go

back.

The majority of delegates stated that a lack of interest was the main reason for not visiting the Exhibitors

stand.

IF YES, PLEASE STATE THE REASON WHY?

General interest

Catching up with a publisher

Look at books that are on offer

To get some feedback on publications.

Discuss different journal alternatives

Network and engage with the exhibitors

To get knowledge and sharing of information in relation to their specifications and products.

Access new ideas

The majority of delegates stated that getting feedback and accessing new ideas were the fundamental reasons

for attending the Exhibitors stand.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL FEEDBACK REGARDING THE EXHIBITORS AT THE

BAM2014 CONFERENCE?

Good range of stands.

They need to be friendlier.

Well done for all the hard work put in!

Have the authors table better evidenced, not in the last room, last stand.

They need to all be in one place.

Good to see someone promoting Portsmouth.

The exhibitors stand was far too spread out. Also, I wish they wouldn’t pack up before the conference

has closed. There were plenty of people around for tea on Thursday afternoon. I had been given some

information by a colleague and it was important I spoke with one of the exhibitors and they had

packed up and were nowhere to be seen.

BAM office team fantastic- great support and lovely people.

Having them in two discrete locations was not helpful, especially as it appeared some of the

exhibitors were tucked away in the dark. This wasn’t a vibrant atmosphere.

There must have been a last minute change because the map did not reflect the exhibitor’s position.

Would have been beneficial to have in the same location.

Put them in one place, preferably where refreshments are served. Sign post them better if in different

places. Have more seats for refreshment breaks.

They were helpful, useful and informative.

Good to see the British Library there, I wonder if their offerings might be better publicised in a talk-

maybe in the management history track.

Better to have all exhibitors in one room.

DID YOU THINK THE "MEET THE AUTHORS TABLE" WAS A VALUABLE ADDITION TO THE

CONFERENCE?

DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENHTS ON HOW ‘MEET THE AUTHORS’ COULD BE

IMPROVED FOR NEXT YEAR?

As an author, I was asked to contribute to this, but was given no further briefing on timing, venue, or

indeed the expectations that authors were meant to meet. So, as I didn’t know what I was being

asked to sign up, I didn’t sign up.

I didn’t hear or know about the ‘Meet the Authors’ table.

I thought it was a good idea- the location of the table and their purpose could have been more

effective.

As far as I can see, it provided a good forum in which to meet people.

I would like to attend next year, and have more structure in these meetings.

It was unclear which authors we were meeting. We used these tables for discussion of papers rather

than books for lunch.

I wanted to attend but did not realise it was on during the lunch time. The oversight was mine and not

that of the organisers. I would have liked to hear from the editors of BJM and IJMR as a separate

session and not only as PDW.

I did not know what this was, which authors would be there etc. I did see a table marked ‘authors’ bit

and didn’t see anyone there.

Did you think the "Meet the Authors Table" was a valuable addition / to

the conference?

Yes No I didn't know about this I didn't attend

I have seen the meet the authors table. I have even placed the brochures to a forthcoming book. I

met some people around the table, but I did not think it was very lively.

Yes, please indicate that this is the ‘Meet the Authors Table’ please have a sign showing the evidence.

Please organise a special meeting at the authors table for discussion or a presentation of new

authors.

Didn’t really work. No books were left on the table for review and the use of multiple venues made it

hard to visit during coffee breaks.

Better signage, or location, it was a little hard to find.

It would be nice to have more information about this session. What usually happens? What’s the

format?

Yes, publicise it more in far more detail. Perhaps offer it as a meet the Authors session on a similar

basis to meet the editor’s session.

The idea is good, but the implementation is bad. Just a small table in the corner and not well

organised.

I was looking two days to find it! It was hidden!!

I contacted the organisers to present my edit book about Research Methods in HRM but I didn’t

receive any information about the time or location of the ‘Meet the Authors table’ very disappointed!

Timetable them. Most of the desks were unoccupied.

You need to invite one star writer to attract people.

It was unstructured.

I would have like to of attended, perhaps if I knew who participants were earlier on I would have had

the chance to become more familiar with their work.

WHICH ASPECTS OF THE CONFERENCE WERE NOT USEFUL OR DIDN'T WORK AND

SHOULD NOT BE REPEATED NEXT YEAR?

Pick somewhere which has less noise pollution

Out of town location – distance to accommodation

Booking system that doesn’t allow institutional bookings

Slow start for Tuesday, especially for students and faculty who attended the symposium

Having rooms that are too small, need to be bigger.

The poor quality of papers

Gala Dinner on the Wednesday - means less people attend on the Thursday

Smaller venue for Gala Dinner so ticket could be cheaper

The amount of tracks. Led to people missing sessions and if BAM continues to expand then this will

increase

Session chairs shouldn’t present in sessions they are chairing

Quality of food – nothing there for international delegates

Multiple scheduling of certain events – delegates missed out on attending certain sessions

Quality of papers; make it more stricter

WHICH ASPECTS OF THE CONFERENCE WERE PARTICULARLY USEFUL AND SHOULD BE

REPEATED NEXT YEAR?

25% of respondents offered feedback on which aspects of the BAM Conference they found particularly useful

Workshops were useful.

Frequent opportunity to interact and network.

New Member’s Welcome Breakfast should definitely be done next year.

Popularity of PDW’s, means they should continue.

The reviewing workshop for early researchers and doctoral students was very useful – they should be

repeated so that others have the opportunity to attend.

The main aspects which delegates were pleased with at the 2014 BAM Conference were the opportunity to

network. Delegates found it encouraging that they spoke to many different academics, which have given them

great feedback and advice on research and publications for future work.

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR IMPROVEMENTS OR ADDITIONS TO THE CONFERENCE

PROGRAMME FOR NEXT YEAR?

Improvements

More joint sessions among tracks.

Cut the number of tracks. Ensure that what is said on the program is delivered. And if anything does

not go according to plan, ensure that the people on the ground are able to deal with disappointed

participants. Overall, a very disappointing BAM 2014.

I object to having to join the British Academy of Management in order to register for the Conference.

That becomes a personal expense and my teaching and research is tangential at best to the BAM foci.

Allowing delegates to be non-member attendees would be welcome.

Less spent on dinner venue and entertainment, more on food.

I found the Special Interest Groups useful and believe that they might be better planned to maximise

output and continuity of involvement and networking.

Invite more famous scholars, have interesting key note speakers, reward women for their

achievements.

Meet the editor’s session to be given more time, not squeezed in at lunch-time. This session could be

turned into a working lunch.

Provide delegates with usernames and passwords as Wi-Fi in certain parts of venue were uneven.

Something should be done to ensure speakers attend their presentations.

There should be more chairs available for breaks.

PDWs could be split in two so that delegates can attend more than one.

Gala Dinner – Should not be held on Wednesday as events and sessions on Thursday were sparsely

attended.

Time allocated to developmental papers could be improved.

Have more variety in speakers.

Not having to be a BAM member in order to attend the conference.

Keep a PhD student list somewhere, similar to the authors’ in the back of the BAM booklet?

Avoid scheduling the SIG AGM immediately before the dinner as there was little time to get ready.

Additions

Café / commercial food and beverage outlet.

Snacks at refreshment breaks.

Certificates for attending events.

Facilitated networking sessions.

Mobile app or widgets.

Providing discs or memory sticks in packs which contains papers and proceedings.

More speakers from emerging countries.

It would be good if there was a way that delegates staying in same accommodation could be made

aware of this if they wanted. Then they could share taxi costs for conference dinner, eat together 1st

night etc.

Better signposts to rooms so it is easier to find.

ASIDE FROM THE CONFERENCE, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IMPROVED OR ADDED

TO THE MEMBERSHIP SERVICES YOU GET FROM BAM THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?

Ability for institutions to be invoiced for memberships.

The conference is, in comparison to other conferences quite expensive. Some money seems to be

spent on things that are not relevant (glossy booklet). Would be great to keep the costs down.

I believe that it is very good at present so I don’t think membership services need to be improved. I’d

like to make another comment on the conference, as there wasn’t a question about the cost. I think it

is a little expensive and perhaps could be reduced a little. It is an excellent conference but may be a

little on the pricey side.

The conference dates tend to coincide with the new school year and because I run a track I have to be

at the school at this time. That means I could only attend two days instead of three and I find it

unsatisfactory for the amount of money spent in travelling and paying for the conference.

A list of upcoming deadlines for special journal issues of 4* and perhaps 3* journals and other key

events would be useful.

Information about new research results.

More support for business history.

More tourism studies awareness.

More research training events.

Conference fee is too high.

Communication of SIG site within the BAM site –the information there is out of date and due for an

update!

More engagement with other PhD BAM members – the conference was a great way to meet others at

this point in their career. How can this be continued throughout the year?

Funding support for international doctoral students.

Better meeting rooms at the BAM office.

Yes, more online events so that members across the globe can avail benefits of the membership.

When your membership lapses you should still get emails from BAM to remind you about the

conference.

Return to printed journals.

An archive of all BAM Conferences from the last ten years.

AS A FIRST TIME ATTENDEE, DID YOU FEEL WELCOME AT THE BAM2014 CONFERENCE?

HOW COULD WE IMPROVE THINGS FOR FIRST TIME DELEGATES IN 2015?

I felt very welcome and the idea of having a tag on the delegate badge to say so was a good idea.

I felt very welcome by the Identity Track Chairs and members.

Yes, the whole experience was positive and very welcoming.

I had a really good time and thought it was a really good conference overall. The market venue was

not ideal.

Better signposting of buildings and events some rooms too full of delegates- bigger rooms needed.

I feel very welcome at BAM 2014 Conference. I do not think you could do more for new delegates.

It was fine.

Less rigid organisation by SIG’s.

Improve the welcome meeting and explain SIG’s more.

Yes, but I don’t think putting a label on new members is a good idea.

Yes. Social night the night before?

I had a great experience as a first time attendee. I made some great contacts at the Welcome

Breakfast which made transition to the SIG easier. The SIG dinner and sessions were also useful in

building relationships with people with similar interests to me.

I felt the quality of organisation was outstanding.

Unfortunately due to travel times, I was unable to attend the New Member’s Welcome Breakfast

which was a shame. I think this might have been useful to meet people and find out a bit more about

what the conference had to offer. Despite this, I found the conference a great experience and

members were helpful.

Yes it was a great experience.

Yes but I knew many delegates already.

I attended the Monday so I already felt installed. I liked having the ribbon as it helped me to meet

other people and others made an effort to chat with me. This is a very welcoming conference and

attracts great authors so I liked having the opportunity to hear about their work. As I did not have a

paper I used this as an opportunity to explore all different SIGs- this was helpful and constructive.

Yes. It would have been good if there was another session where first time delegates could interact in

addition to the Welcome Breakfast.

Felt very welcome –but had the advantage of several colleagues being at BAM – which took me under

their wing.

It was a really nice experience as staff and administration both were helpful and cooperative. The

venue at waterfront hall was wonderful and the best possible selection for such event. Only the

sessions at St George’s Market were not matching with sessions going on at other venues. I would

expect all sessions to be in some quite, pleasant and congenial environment next time.

Yes I did feel welcome.

After this year’s experiences I am less likely to attend next year.

The staffs, especially Monika was very helpful. BAM Conference was a huge event and it is expected

that it would be difficult to manage the events over several events.

Welcome breakfast was a good idea.

BAM2014 was a real treat for me.

Yes. The people who make up the BAM community are certainly warm and welcoming. The welcome

breakfast was certainly a good ice breaker.

Yes, it was well organised and definitely felt welcomed there.

Made to feel very welcome. My track members were very supportive and friendly. They offered

extremely useful feedback.

Yes it was a wonderful experience overall. The atmosphere was very positive and encouraging.

Yes, the sessions were very helpful to first timers.

I think the dinner should be on the last day of the conference so that people do not leave. I was sad to

see the majority of the attendees leave after the gala which was a day before I presented, so I

couldn’t get as much feedback as I wanted.

I felt very welcome- nothing you could improve.

Select a better venue, invite more interesting scholars

Felt welcome

Very much so! I hope to participate more in my SIG next time and would like to review papers as a

way to get involved. I believe in addition to the welcome breakfast(I couldn’t make it) it would be

interesting to have an open session to discuss some of the expectations and ways in which the new

member can make the most out of the conference.

Yes, very welcome. I do not know how you could improve...

This was my first time attending an academic conference, from the start I was made to feel welcome

by all. The New Member’s Welcome Breakfast is a great idea. I found the identity special interest

group particularly well organised, informative and constructive.

TESTIMONIALS

A wonderful opportunity to meet people whose names you know, possibly from their

writing.

Anon

My first taste of BAM didn’t disappoint- a participative and supportive atmosphere made me

feel very welcome and the quality of papers, particularly in my track, was second to none.

Ian Smyth, University of Ulster

I really enjoyed BAM 2014 Conference in Belfast. I thought the quality of papers and

discussions were high and the atmosphere very collegial. It was an honour to receive the

Best Full Paper award in my track and I look forward to another BAM next year.

Anna Tilba, Newcastle University Business School

The BAM2014 Conference gave my research a push forward and new important contacts.

Nomie Eriksson, School of Business, Skovde, Sweden

As a Doctoral Student and first time attendee at the BAM 2014 Conference, I wouldn’t have

missed it! I had the opportunity to present a paper, be challenged in a non-threatening

environment and receive some really useful feedback to help me develop it. More

importantly though, I met some great people with similar interests who made me feel really

welcome. The fact that I can now pick up a phone and kick issues around with more people

interested in the same stuff has made the world feel a less small and isolating place.

Dennis MacDonald, Leeds University Business School

As a first-year PhD student and first time attendant of BAM went above and beyond all my

expectations. I think the easiest way I can relate the experience is through a music metaphor.

We all spend substantial time in the ‘studio’ doing the reviewing, researching and writing.

For most of us, it is really satisfactory experience but it isn’t until you do a ‘gig’ where you

present your research to colleagues and peers, have it considered critically and compared to

other work, that it becomes meaningful. With this in mind, I look forward to BAM 2015,

Portsmouth.

Constantine Manolchev, Plymouth University

BAM Conference provides a fantastic opportunity for networking, socialising and intellectual

Dr Vikkas Kumar, Bristol Business School, University of the West of England.

BAM 2014 Conference was very well organised and coordinated. I wish to express my sincere

It’s an excellent conference, where we’ve the opportunity to present and discuss our

research and get valuable feedback. Furthermore, there is a friendly atmosphere, where we

can meet colleagues from other universities and countries.

Jose Marcos Mesquita, Universidad Fumec, Brazil

I found this year’s BAM Conference and Entrepreneurship track in particular very strong in

terms of quality of papers and ideas discussed! There was a good mix of qualitative and

quantitative researchers presenting their work. Developmental paper sessions were

particularly interesting to see the new Entrepreneurship research being conceived by

academics from around the world.

Dr Natalia Vershinina, De Montfort University

BAM2014 gave me a really good networking opportunity in interact with fellow PhD students

and leading professors from British academia. The sessions offered me interesting new

perspectives that opened me up to future research possibilities.

Sreevas Sahasranamam, Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode

BAM2014 experience. This was a busy BAM with 3 presentations, 2x chair sessions and

presenting my book at the authors table. The day flew by too fast. The BAM conference was

a perfect place for networking among academics. It allowed deep emotions at the Titanic

Museum. Not only was the place outstanding, but it also was exceptional as emotional.

Sessions were professional and useful; all in all, it was a fabulous event with great people in a

wonderful place. I learned a lot, and will definitely attend next year in Portsmouth. A big

thank you goes to the organisers, especially Monika.

Ursula Schinzel, University of Luxembourg

It was really nice and a wonderful experience being at the BAM conference. The choice of

venue was fantastic and it was an amazing experience visiting Belfast City. The arrangements

were done perfectly and supporting material was provided with complete information and

nicely designed. The sessions were nicely managed and were full of constructive discussion

and feedback. I really enjoyed all three days and impatiently look forward to the next BAM

conference in Portsmouth. I would appreciate the efforts and hard work done by

administration in the successful holding of this event. I have best wishes for future events as

well.

Muhammed Tufail, PhD Scholar, University of Bedfordshire

Inspiring conference with a comprehensive academic interface.

Peter Sarka –DTU

The BAM has become an important institution for specific members of the School of

Economic and Business Sciences of the University of Witwatersrand and we always aim to

send a delegation of presenters of full papers every year to the conference. We have all been

delighted by the general hospitality and the efficient service we have received over the years

and look forward tremendously to our continued participation next year in Portsmouth. Best

wishes to all at BAM.

Professor David Coldwell, University of Witwatersrand

BAM 2014 was a great conference where you meet like-minded people and of all the

conferences I have attended in the past, BAM2014 had been the most productive conference

as the networking led to collaboration for future research and projects.

Mary Anthony, Curtin University

I submitted papers drawn from my PhD shortly before my Viva. Having my work peer

reviewed, and receiving advice on how to strengthen it, was useful and helped my

confidence before having to face my examiners.

Llinos Mary Jehu, Robert Gordon University

BAM2014 was a real treat for me. The symposia and presentations were fantastic; the

catering and organisation superb. Also, the conference offered plenty of opportunity for

networking. The importance of this cannot be over emphasised, given that we live in a

complex and ever changing world in which what you know is as important as who you know.

Anon

It was a good experience for a doctoral student and the atmosphere was very positive and

encouraging. The editors and senior professors were quite approachable and therefore is a

good ground for networking. The sessions were informative and there was umpteen time for

feedback and discussion which made the conference more worthwhile.

Pearl Malhotra, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

It was my first conference and my first experience in presenting a full paper. Though I was

trembling so hard that I forgot my English, all of the conference attendees were extremely

kind and polite. I am very grateful for all advices and support. I brought home only the best

experience and memories!

Lolita Jurksiene, PhD Candidate, Kaunas University of Technology

Great atmosphere, friendly and familiar ambience with BAM colleagues.

Rafael Gonzalez, German Graduate School of Management and Law

It was a great opportunity to meet and network with many scholars including Professor Mark

Saunders. I use his book a lot and our students too. I liked the venue of the Gala Dinner and

enjoyed the Irish dance. On the side-lines of the conference, we had the opportunity to have

our second GKRN meeting at the Queen’s University.

Cosmas Kemboi, KCA University, Kenya

The BAM2014 Conference fantastically provided academic ground to cross fertilize ideas that

are germane to the future development of Management principles and practices capable of

building lasting institutions that will engender global business and economic growth. A

memorable event for me in particular as a new member and first time delegate with a

presentation that won Best Full Paper Award in Performance Management in this most

attended conference of the academy.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE FIRST TIME DELEGATES ATTENDING THE BAM2015

CONFERENCE?

Talk to everyone!

Anon

Join a SIG.

Anon

Enjoy it and attend as many sessions as you can.

Anon

To prepare and to make notes, to not be afraid to contribute (even though I was) to make the most of

it and to enjoy it, not be afraid of networking or speaking to people, everyone was friendly.

Anon

It’s a good opportunity for learning new things and networking.

Anon

Having never attended an academic conference, I knew BAM 2014 would be a different kind of

experience, so decided to fully immerse myself in it. I found that the best way to do so, for me, was to

meet as many new members, ask as many experienced members for advice, guidance, opinion,

attend as many presentations of interest and, most importantly, engage in the post-paper discussion!

Constantine Manolchev, Plymouth University.

Prepare for the conference- know who the gurus of your area are, if they are there, and go to their

talks.

Anon

Make sure you attend the New Member’s Welcome Breakfast and your SIGs AGM and if there is one,

their informal meal.

Anon

Try putting papers on the Developmental Papers track; I felt that it was a good starting point. Also do

try and attend the SIG meeting.

Sreevas Sahasranamam, Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode

Don’t be afraid to network and approach people you would like to speak with- it’s a very friendly and

open conference.

Anon

Fully participate in your chosen SIG track events, including PDW’s, paper presentations and AGM, and

in the welcome breakfast.

Anon

Decide the sessions you want to attend and read the papers beforehand. Once BAM starts, the pace is

furious.

Anon

Don’t forget to register for Professional Developmental Workshops and try to attend the conference

for all days to get maximum learning and feedback.

Anon

It is a huge conference. Get your programme sorted out before going.

Peter Sarka –DTU

Ensure that you are active in all SIG environments.

Anon

Read the programme in advance. The choices are vast.

Anon

Definitely worth going and submitting a Developmental Paper.

Anon

Network, network and network. And do attend all SIG informal dinners and the gala event. It’s a small

price to pay.

Anon

Take plenty of time to research everything in advance!

Anon

First time delegates should always be very prepared for learning and quality participation for BAM

does not discriminate in its Best Paper awards. New timers with quality papers have equal chance of

winning the prestigious awards as much as the experienced attendees. I am a living example of this.

General Feedback

It’s important to encourage more members of the track to submit papers. / This year excellent events

were organised by the track throughout the year before the conference.

More detailed feedback on the papers submitted during the initial review.

Some conferences have social events by area of interest specifically for networking. If BAM had such

an event, I must have missed seeing it.

The track had clashes in its paper run and this needs to be sorted out.

Are there any improvements you would like to see from this SIG / Track throughout the year or at the

BAM2014 Conference?

Have webcasts of events so that students can join the session remotely.

Do you have suggestions for what type of events would you like to attend?

Family Business workshops.

It would depend on what they are, where they are etc. With limited travel funds (I live in the US), I can

only attend one long distance event per year.

I would be interested in attending, although in my practice, my ability to attend is severely time-

constrained.

General Feedback

The Gender in Management SIG works particularly well due to Adelina and Savita’s hard work and

commitment.

I was extremely pleased and impressed with the variety of papers and the openness of participants to

discuss topics. I felt welcome, received helpful feedback and went home truly happy for having

attended. For me, it was also great to become familiar with what is being studied in the field of

Gender in Management.

Qualitative research coupled with the feminist perspective.

I would be very interested, but I am not sure I would have funding available. Unless dates were close

to the BAM Conference.

General Feedback

I see the involvement of James Hayton as a very positive development for the SIG. I hope this

encourages some more senior HR academics to actively engage with BAM. Helen and Pawan have

been doing a great job with this. I hope this track will connect (more) with its AOM big brother and

benefit from this connection. Looking forward to hearing about initiatives and activities from the

track.

I asked very early about chairing a developmental session, this didn’t happen and I wasn’t told why,

even after several emails to Monika.

Unfortunately I missed the signature meeting on the first day... However, the quality of discussion and

feedback was good and constructive. One of my papers was placed in late afternoon session on

Wednesday and I had couple of members with me only in that session.

The qualities of papers were great.

Nothing.

HRM symposium was not very good as the speakers did not speak well and the location meant that

the presentation was not visible to the majority.

Are there any improvements you would like to see from this SIG / Track throughout the year or at the

Enjoyed the track discussions very much.

The venue that this track was in was completely inappropriate

Ensure the PDW venue can accommodate all those who have registered.

I was made to feel extremely welcome as a new member. The sessions were well run, at times under

difficult conditions. Feedback was constructive and encouraging. I left feel motivated to continue my

studies

My main interest is social identity theory so any opportunity to explore and develop my

understandings of its applications either through paper presentations, workshops, action learning sets

or discussions forums would be welcomed

Webinars/Online for a; methodological discussions

Yes, and these were discussed and agreed at the SIG AGM.

Events that are NOT in the south of England

Workshops are useful tools; innovation is important but its understanding is limited to technology. A

workshop on understanding innovation on a wider scale is necessary. Also, workshops on research

methods (especially of a qualitative nature) on innovation thematic might be useful especially to PhD

students

Developing its agenda

Workshops on trends in research and innovation in management studies

Perhaps the design might focus more on opportunities for continuing involvement by overseas

members

Seems this SIG is nothing more than a mechanism for reviewing the papers for BAM. They did not

seem interested at all in engaging any new members. A new member asked what is the purpose of

the SIG, and the leader replied ‘you can read it on the website’ (!!!)

I felt that the chairs were very good – very committed to the track and very constructive in their

General Feedback

This SIG is so good because of the people who run it; very well organised and very committed.

Love being a member

General Feedback

Again the venue was an epic fail… needed to be at least 100% bigger than was provided (an

improvised bar-room setting had to be used instead)

Discussion variable first paper presented at 09.00 in the morning after the dinner limited discussion

from the small number present. Second session that day, another paper presented with excellent

discussion
