Camp CorinthianThe Kids are Coming!

Vice CommodoreSandy [email protected]

Vice CommodoreChuck Wert [email protected]

The Newport to Ensenada Race is now history, Opening Day with all its great traditions has come and gone, and Taco Tuesdays are in full swing. This can only mean one thing, and that is – the kids are coming. Perhaps the most long-standing tradition of our club is the Junior Sailing program, now aptly named Camp Corinthian, which kicks off in June for up to 80 children ranging in age from six to 15. I realize for some of our members and marina tenants, this program can sometimes be a challenge. While some of these kids are well seasoned, for others, these are their first days on the water, so launching and retrieving their Sabots can be a difficult task. If you are on the docks, offer them a hand.

The long-term benefits far outweigh the inconvenience. This program has proven to be such a great showcase for BCYC and perhaps the best opportunity we have to recruit new members, either through fostering these kids, or alerting their parents to what we have to offer. We are extremely fortunate to have Cameron McLaren as our junior sailing director, ably assisted by Matt Peter, head coach. They have produced amazing results, with our juniors winning or placing in regattas up and down the coast. This is their major recruitment time so if you have children or friends who have an interest in joining Camp Corinthian, please have them contact Cameron. This program does not just emphasize sailing, it goes beyond, teaching all phases of water activities. It is very well-rounded.

The Junior Sailing Committee, headed by George Hampton, and assisted by Director JR Means and others, recognizes that funding such a program can be daunting. To remedy the shortfall in costs, they are planning several fundraisers. The first begins on June 5 when they will be selling surplus items collected from our members at Minney’s Parking Lot sale. Please clean out your garage and storage unit. You can bring your boating- related items to the club June 2-3, 3-7 p.m., or contact George or JR and they will arrange collection. This fall, the committee is planning a major fundraiser and auction and I hope you will give it your full support.

Our Junior Program, an integral part of BCYC, has produced many great sailors and benefitted our club in so many ways. We need to do whatever it takes to help them reach their goals.

The 2016 Opening Day celebration was filled with pomp, sunshine and flags everywhere. It will also be remembered for awards presented to two BCYC members.

Kathie Ohmer-Arnold was named the recipient of the Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award. A joint honor of the National Women’s Sailing Association and Boat Owners Association of the United States, the award recognized Kathie’s record of achievement, over 30-plus years, in inspiring, educating and enriching the lives of other women through sailing. She is a role model who has demonstrated that women can participate at the highest level in sailing.

Paul DeCapua received the Edward F. Kennedy award honoring his significant contribution to yachting, beginning in the 1990s. He has played an important role in PHRF and NOSA over the years, as well as serving as BCYC Sail Fleet Captain for more than 10 years. Paul has worked tirelessly to make improvements with every challenge he has accepted.

In June, you have the opportunity to make a significant difference in the BCYC Junior Program. On June 2 and 3, between 3-7 p.m., bring boating-related items to the club so that the Juniors can sell them at the June 5 Minney’s Parking Lot Sale. Then on June 3, be part of Le BCYC Bingo, a night that will be filled with great food and fun. ALL proceeds will benefit the junior program.

Make plans to enjoy the premiere Patio Movie and Pizza night on June 17. There will be pizza made-to-order and a movie. Father’s Day will feature a fabulous brunch, as well as the opportunity to gawk at vehicles from vintage to high-end models, and appreciate our members’ amazing art work.

Jeopardy…

ANSWER - An astronomical event that occurs twice each year as the sun reaches its highest or lowest excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere. QUESTION - What is a solstice?

The 2016 summer solstice is June 20, just one day before another Taco Tuesday race and buffet. How will we celebrate? The race will be longer that night and the party will be longer too! Have you signed up yet? It’s never too late.

ANSWER – They make up the Lesser Antilles Islands.QUESTION - What are the Windward and Leeward Islands?

The 2016 Angelman Series begins in June and runs for three months. The series consists of three windward/leeward races per day – a grand total of nine races. There is ample opportunity to do well…or not.

ANSWER – 100 to 1.QUESTION – What are the odds the seniors will win the Generation Gap Challenge?

The 2016 Generation Gap Challenge will be held in July. Teams of juniors will compete against teams of seniors for bragging rights and some very cool prizes. Although the juniors have won the Challenge every year so far, rumor has it the seniors have a new plan this year – something about a head start based on age difference.

ANSWER – It is the last big race of the year. QUESTION – What is the Fall Finale?

Unlike years past when the 14-Mile Bank race signaled the end of ocean racing for the year, the Fall Finale has surfaced as the new kid on the block. The event, Nov. 12, will offer ocean and bay racing all rolled into one fun-filled day, with a fabulous party at BCYC afterwards. Check out our race calendar on the BCYC website for more details.

Details will be sent to everyone who has signed up by mid-June. Bill and Kristy Parr will be our cruise captains and BCYC Olympic Coaches.

July 9 is the sign-up date for the Cambria wine tasting adventure/cruise Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Please sign up early so we can plan for our hotel rooms on Moonstone Beach and our winery tours. This cruise is expected to be a sell out, so don’t be left out! More details will follow, but this is a land cruise, so you will drive up on your own. NO boat is needed, and we encourage all our new members to consider joining us.

Mark your calendars for CLAMBAKE, Aug. 11-14. Sign up also begins July 9! And, keep your radar on for a Pop-Up Cruise in July and/or September.

Cruises are a great way to get to know other members and make new friends. Our monthly meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Please join our fun group and help us plan the upcoming cruises. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Wow, what a fantastic BCYC Opening Day! Great weather, great speeches and great people came together to create an exceptional afternoon. I loved addressing the enthusiastic crowd in attendance. It was an honor to review all of the junior sailing highlights – we are very proud of our accomplishments and hope you are too.

As I look back on this past Opening Day, I realize we truly are the “Friendliest Yacht Club on the Bay.” I saw many old friends and met lots of new ones at this event. Here is my conclusion: being part of Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club is a very happy privilege. We are one big family, juniors and seniors, sailors and boaters. Through our pride and passion for the club, we develop lasting friendships among our members.

Here is one of my favorite photos from Opening Day. Thanks, Mrs. Pickell, for the great shot of me with Junior Board Vice Commodore Sammy Pickell and Junior Board Treasurer Riley Foster. We have been friends for a long time. I am lucky to say that I am a member of Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club!

More Fun for A Good Cause!

Las CommodorasBobbi [email protected]

The Las Commodoras-sponsored Poker Run for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was a success! Participants boarded 12 Duffys and one pontoon boat and cruised to five docks to pick up their poker cards. Dock hosts were Cindy and Abbott Ayloush, Michael Bryant, Barbara Eden and Karen Katz (her cousin), Owen Provence and Bill McNamara, and Janet and John Wells. Congratulations to Vice Commodore Chuck Wert for having the best poker hand.

Many thanks to all of the volunteers who helped with the Poker Run, Cork Pull, raffle baskets and Duffy donation. Your generosity and dedication was inspiring!

Opening Day was absolutely beautiful. Las Commodoras served as the official greeters and we very much enjoyed meeting and greeting our members and honored guests.

More than 25 ladies enjoyed great food, friends and warm surroundings during the ever-popular progressive luncheon. We thank our gracious hostesses – Ruth Montgomery-Cicchese, Marjorie Davis and Peggy Granbery – for opening their beautiful homes for this event.

Make plans to be part of the Del Mar Races event July 21. More details will follow.

Welcome to the 2016 summer sailing season! This month is packed full of regattas, activities and events hosted by all the local yacht clubs. Junior sailing events include our very own BCYC Junior Leukemia Cup on June 5, the Kaenon Junior Match Race Invitational at Long Beach Yacht Club June 4, the Olympic Classes Regatta at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club on June 11-12, the Non-Calm Bowl at Newport Harbor Yacht Club June 25, and the Junior Commodore’s Cup at Lido Isle Yacht Club on June 26. With all these regattas right before the summer programs begin, there are lots of opportunities to get a head start on summer sailing right up until the weekend prior to start of Camp Corinthian.

If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late to register for 2016 Camp Corinthian! Visit bcyc.org/juniors for more information and to access the online registration form. For parents with kids already enrolled, don’t forget about our Parent Orientation Night on Sunday, June 7, at 6:30 p.m. Please plan to have at least one parent per sailor in attendance and expect to spend about an hour going over important documents and details in preparation for the program. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. I look forward to seeing some familiar faces as well as meeting many new families this year!

Summer Has Arrived!

Junior Sailing DirectorCameron [email protected]

Pickell The Corona del Mar varsity sailing team had a very successful weekend sailing in Long Beach for the gold Pacific Coast Championships. BCYC sailors Derek Pickell, Sammy Pickell and Catherine Webb competed in the regatta. Saturday’s steady offshore breeze had us hiking out for almost the entire day. Sailing consistent races from about 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., we ended the day solidly in second place. Sunday brought a lighter, shifty breeze reminiscent of Newport Beach. Having practiced all season in tricky conditions, we were able to put in some top finishes and pull ahead of Point Loma and our rival, Newport Harbor, to win the regatta. That same weekend, the junior varsity team attended the silver Pacific Coast Championships at Encinal Yacht Club, with BCYC sailors Laurel Foster and Max Mayol leading the team to third place. We trained hard the last few weeks of the season in preparation for the High School Sailing Nationals, May 13-15, in Charleston, South Carolina, competing for the Mallory trophy. Because of this preparation, we were able to finish in 13th place out of 20 teams. Go Sea Kings!

Summer Pizza and Movie Nights

ActivitiesKristy Parr/Kari [email protected] [email protected]

Ah, summer nights – late sunsets, warm breezes and our beautiful lower patio. What better way to enjoy all of this than a Patio Pizza and Movie Night? Throughout the summer, we will feature made-to-order pizzas on the lower patio along with the screening of some fun-filled family movies. The club will be firing up the pizza ovens on the lower patio at 6:30 p.m., and the movie, complete with popcorn and candy, will roll at 8 p.m. The patio bar opens at 6 p.m. Come join us on June 17, July 22 (actually a Burger Bash and Movie Night) and Aug. 19.

The movie we will be screening on June 17 is “Guardians of the Galaxy” starring Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana. Invite some friends to share “the friendliest movie night on the bay.” Lights, camera, action!
