Background of Islam: -Arabs are the son of Ishmael of Abraham. This traces their lineage back to the foundations of the Abrahamic traditions. -Qur’an is the revelation of God’s word. Happened on Mt. Hira outside of Mecca, continued to be revealed to M. for the rest of life -Even though it is the youngest of the three traditions there is still no clear understanding of everything in the tradition. Well documented tradition of hadith The Qur’an: -It is the direct word of God -Typically viewed as a text that promotes violence: Sura 9:5—And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. -Even with this passage there are still passages like 8:61-62—But if they incline towards peace, then you must also incline towards it and put your trust in God: He is the all-Hearing, all-Knowing. If, however, they try to deceive you, then God is enough for you. -Comparing these two passages show ambiguity, they were revealed in a similar context and time
