Course title: Ear training 1

Course content: Group lesson per section, in conjunction with Solfeggio 1, where students learn to
develop their musical imagery and inner hearing. Students learn to understand and
transcribe music from listening to live or recorded music. Students have to be able to
play or sing fragments of music by ear after the fragment has been played to them.
They also have to transpose or improvise on a given fragment. The lessons in Ear
training are combined with the Solfeggio 1 lessons.
Objectives: At the end of this course, the student:
is able to recognize, understand, transcribe and play by ear and/or transpose
aspects of music related to pitch (melody and harmony), rhythm and musical
form;
is able to integrate practical and theoretical skills;
is able to communicate about what he perceives in a piece of music.

Solfeggio class 1 exam;
- a score of 5 minimum is obtained for the Ear training 1 and the Solfeggio 1 exam.

Course content: Please see Ear training 1. Ear training 2 is sequel to the training of skills of Ear
training 1. Students can process musical information through listening more quickly
and are able to deal with more complex music, such as polyphony and a more
extensive harmonic and rhythmical complex content. The lessons in Ear training 2 are
combined with the Solfeggio 2 lessons.
Objectives: At the end of this course, the student:
is able to recognize, transcribe, play by ear and/or transpose aspects of more
complex music in the field of pitch (melody and harmony), rhythm and musical
form;
is able to integrate practical and theoretical skills;
is able to independently make transcriptions of recordings of performed music
(so not only of music played on the piano);
is able to communicate about what he perceives in music.

Course title: Solfeggio 1

Course content: Group lesson per section where students learn to develop a good representation
(aural understanding) of (concepts in) notated music. The student learns to sing
accompanied and unaccompanied melodies/parts a prima vista; solo and in
polyphonic settings. The first year focuses on tonal and modal, pentatonic and
diatonic (fragments of) music. The lessons in Solfeggio 1 are offered in combination
with Ear training 1.
Objectives: At the end of this course, the student:
is able to aurally envisage notated (mainly diatonic) music, without having to use
an instrument;
is able to aurally envisage the relationship to another musical part, and ascertain
whether a performance is in accordance with its notation;
is able to implement simple strategies that support the musical imagination
(inner hearing).

Course content: This course is a sequel to Solfeggio 1. Group lesson per section where the student
learns to develop a good representation (aural understanding) of (concepts in)
notated music. The student learns to sing accompanied and unaccompanied
melodies/parts a prima vista, solo and in a polyphonic setting. The repertoire has a
more complex melodic content, which strongly appeals to the harmonic
understanding. The lessons in Solfeggio 2 are combined with the lessons in Ear
training 2.
Objectives: At the end of this course, the student:
is able to aurally envisage notated (diatonic and chromatic) music from different
style periods, without having to use an instrument;
is able to aurally envisage the relationship to another musical part in more
complex settings, and ascertain whether a performance is in accordance with its
notation;
is able to implement more complex strategies that support the musical
imagination (inner hearing).
