YORKSHIRE COUNTY CROWN GREEN BOWLING ASSOCIATION recorded a remarkable treble when they topped off an

amazing season when their senior and junior county sides won their respective County Championships, adding to their Veterans who won the Veterans County Championship at Todmorden earlier in the year.

YORKSHIRE AVENGE 2009 DEFEAT

Yorkshire turned the tables on Shropshire to avenge their final defeat of two years ago with victory in this season’s Endsleigh Senior County Championship.

Yorkshire held the advantage after the first four blocks as both venues produced some vital away performances. Andy Moss claimed the Endsleigh Man of the Match award for Shropshire with his fine 21-9 opening win at Newsome WMC in Yorkshire while Scott Fisher celebrated his recent engagement by winning the award at Old Shrewsbury BC in Shropshire with his 21-10 win in the opening blocks. Yorkshire held the early advantage by 18 chalks.

Shropshire hit back with three home winners in the middle four only to be outdone by a tremendous middle four by Yorkshire at Newsome in which each player posted 21's on their side of the match

sheet. John Spinks set them on their way with a 21-7 winning card quickly followed by Dave Fox who won 21-8 as the White Rose County extended their lead to 46. Shropshire dominated the final games with six winners from the eight remaining cards but none could match that of the Yorkshire middle quartet and they fell 27 chalks short when all scores were added up.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS LINE-UPS COMPLETE

The final pieces of the mens’ Champion of Champions jigsaw are now complete with the Waterloo World Championship, Midland Masters and Isle of Man September Festival declaring their winners for this season’s competition on Saturday 1st October at the Waterloo Hotel, Blackpool. SIMON COUPE retained his Waterloo World Championship crown with a tremendous 21-4 final victory over the relatively unknown Steve Morrey from Crewe. Simon was rarely troubled on his way to the final winning 21-1 in the last 64 with semi-finalist David Walker (Swinton) scoring the most against him with 13. In fact, Coupe only had 42 chalks scored against him in his six games played in Waterloo Week. Morrey had an unbelievable tournament disposing of Graeme Wilson, Martin Gilpin and Tommy Johnstone on his way to the final. DARREN SMITH booked his place by winning the 2011 James Birks Memorial Midland Masters. Played at M&B Portland Road, Smith had six tough games on his way to his first title with a 21-15 win over Simon Trentham in the third round being his biggest winning margin. Nick Lewis gave him his sternest test in a 21-20 second round victory with Martin Lloyd succumbing to a 21-16 defeat in the semi-finals. Steve Darling (first round) and Glyn Picknell (last 8) scored 17 against him as did Clay Flattley in the final.

2003 winner, JOHN KENNISH, added the Isle of Man September Festival champion to his CV after he defeated Dean Ferris in this year’s final. Potteries & District star, Ferris, came up against the Manxman who was determined another trophy wasn’t going back to the mainland as he beat Callum Wraight 21-14 in the semi-final and then Ferris 21-13 in the final. This must be the first year in living memory that no reserve

competition has made it into the main draw. In previous

years, the BCGBA CEO has been well in to the lower reaches

of the reserve list after a number of players have double

qualified. The full draw can be found on page 11.

Meanwhile, the ladies have finalised their line-up following the completion of the BCGLBA Junior Merit and the Isle of Man

September Festival. JULIE GREEN, daughter of Cheshire stalwart, Stan Frith, won the September Festival with ALICIA ORMSBY

winning the Junior Merit. The ladies competition follows the men on Sunday 2nd October at the Waterloo Hotel and the full draw is:

Claire Pugh (Dudley & District Merit) v Ellen Leverton (New Brighton Tournament)

Julie Green (Isle of Man September Festival) v Wendy Jackson (Burton & District Merit)

Jackie Owen (Lancashire Merit) v Maggie Barnes (Coventry & District Merit)

WARWICKSHIRE HAT-TRICK IN LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP

NORTH WARWICKSHIRE 412 WARWICKSHIRE 434 Warwickshire made it three consecutive titles in the BCGLBA County Championship after their final victory over neighbours, North Warwickshire. In total contrast to the previous day's Waterloo Cup final, the sun shone brightly on the Waterloo Hotel green in Blackpool as Warwickshire were made to fight all the way for their 11 shot victory having been in total control at the half way stage. A 21-5 from Michelle Chatwin and 21-6 from Sheena Leek had the champions 33 up after twelve games played, with Amy Evans 21-8 victory for North Warwickshire helping to keep the deficit down. Seven winners and a 21-20 loss in the final twelve games saw North Warwickshire gradually claw their way back into the match. But hopes of a memorable comeback were thwarted by Kelly Round whose 21-14 victory for the holders stopped the challengers march and did enough to put the match beyond North Warwickshire. Warwickshire’s win is the first time any side has won three consecutive titles. Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire and Yorkshire, on three occasions, have won back-to-back titles but Warwickshire are the first to complete the treble.

OCEANICO INVITE MERIT WINNERS

The highly successful and prestigious Oceanico Bowls Masters Portugal returns to the crown green bowling calendar from 8th - 15th October 2011 as it moves into its third consecutive year.

The men’s merit winners have been invited in previous years, along with selected ‘open’ tournaments, to the Amendoeira Golf Resort for the week-long event with 7 nights’ complimentary accommodation and free entrance into the final 64 of the main competition. This year the format has been expanded to include all 22 ladies merit winners. The eventual winner will collect the €2,000 first prize. The event kicks off with the warm-up Taylor Bowls Trophy where the winner receives a free Oceanico holiday at the newly opened Belmar Spa & Beach Resort in the western Algarve, overlooking the stunning Porto de Mos beach in Lagos. The Random Pairs competition follows and is run over three days with the Oceanico Bowls Masters Portugal starting on the Wednesday with all non-qualifiers hoping to make it to the last 64 when the qualifiers will

join the fray. The final eight will battle it out on the Friday with the trophies awarded at the Prize Giving Dinner held at Amendoeira Clubhouse with a three course meal and complimentary drinks during the dinner.

With the numbers attending looking strong, one player who is definitely ‘booked in’ is Gary Ellis. Gary has yet to taste defeat in the competition winning the inaugural event in 2009 as well as last year after beating Greater Manchester youngster, Jonathan Copeland. Gary (right), and Jonathan (left), are pictured with former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland international, John Aldridge, who made the presentations.

Those attending the tournament will also be able to watch the PGA’s Portugal Masters at the Oceanico Victoria golf course in Vilamoura on Saturday 15th October with a host of top names teeing off.

EMPHATIC WIN FOR YORKSHIRE JUNIORS

YORKSHIRE retained their Drakes Pride Junior County Championship title in emphatic style when they made amends for the final defeat of two years ago by defeating Warwick & Worcester by 100 in this year’s final. There was nothing between the two sides once the first four games at each venue had been completed and the winning cards were shared at each venue with the 2009 winners holding a slender 3 chalk lead.

From here, Yorkshire dominated the remaining games suffering just one further loss at each venue.

Ellis Owen’s 21-8 set the Yorkshire home side on their way to a 55 chalk victory at Newsome WMC while their away side came away from King George V with 45 chalks to spare in a tremendous away performance.

Robbie Ellis handed in the best card of the match with an excellent 21-3 winning card for Yorkshire, supported by Ryan Lynch who won 21-9. Josh Hale replied for Warwick& Worcester, also with a 21-9 winning card.

It is going to take a good side to beat Yorkshire as they only lose a handful of players next season and their dominance of junior bowls - eight titles in the last eleven years - looks set to continue.

CROWNING GLORY

Derby County football players took a break from the training ground to enjoy a spot of Crown Green Bowling. The Rams’ coaching staff and playing squad were invited to the Rolls Royce Welfare Club on Osmaston Road to take a break from their hectic training schedule in the build-up to their game at Blackpool.

Manager Nigel Clough joked: “It was about the only way we could avoid any more injuries at the moment!” He added: “We were light in numbers because of a few knocks from the Watford game, so we decided to mix things up a bit and take the lads bowling after a light training session. “Our thanks go to Andy Cawley and the Committee members at Rolls Royce Welfare Club for inviting us down to take advantage of their facilities. “They pushed the boat out to make us feel welcome and provided us with lunch too, which we really appreciated.”

YORKSHIRE ‘RAIN’ SUPREME IN WATERLOO CUP

COVENTRY & DISTRICT 385 YORKSHIRE 410 The Waterloo Cup was played on a miserable Blackpool day which got even worse when the heavens opened half way through the match. Coventry & District got off to a flyer with Maggie Barnes (21-3) and Angela Jones (21-4) giving the 2009 winners a 32 shot advantage after four games completed. But hopes of building on their lead soon disappeared as Yorkshire won the next eight games to overtake their midland opponents with 21 shots separating the sides at the half way stage. The rain came down in bucket fulls and although the Waterloo green held up admirably several players struggled on the heavy conditions. June Johnson (21-4) and Ann Hinchcliffe (21-5) found the conditions to their liking for Yorkshire as did the ‘Verdon double’ - Carol winning 21-8 and Heather 21 nil for Coventry & District who had fought back to leave just a couple of shots between the sides with four games to play. The match was brought to an end with three Yorkshire winners in the final four games with Andrea Buckley's 21-5 card instrumental in her sides 25 shot overall victory. This was Yorkshire’s first taste of success in the Waterloo Cup having dominated the County Championship with back-to-back titles in 1990/91, 1997/8 and 2002/3 together with a further success in 1994.

ALICIA BOWS OUT WITH SECOND JUNIOR MERIT TITLE

Seventeen year-old, Alicia Ormsby, retained her British Crown Green Ladies Bowling Association Junior Merit title when she defeated her Yorkshire colleague, Aimee Holmes, 15-6 in the final played at Owley Wood Recreation Club, Cheshire, her last as a junior. Both girls won their semi-final games 15-3 as Yorkshire continue to dominate junior bowling having had both finalists in the Junior County Championship earlier in the season. Sixteen junior girls were divided into four groups of four in strict age order - starting with the oldest and moving down the list to the youngest. The girls then played on a round-robin basis, 15up, with the group winners qualifying for the semi-finals. Natalie Bubb (Dudley & District) and Sally Clee (Shropshire) completed the semi-final line-up and, with the exception of Natalie, all had won their three games with ease to qualify. Natalie though had to wait on the competition organisers to confirm her semi-final place as she finished level on points with Staffordshire’s Katie Scragg. Both girls had won two games each but Natalie’s 15-7 victory over Katie in her opening game was enough to give her a better overall aggregate.
