1.2.4 CONFIGURE INI-FILE

Now you have to choose to which COM-port on your computer you want toconnect the printer output of your Master reader. Check which of COM-port 1 or2 is free.

- Start Note pad- Select File Open- Select All File (*.*)- Open the file C:\axbase32\axbase.ini

The text will look something like below:

This line shows which COM-port is chosen. You may change this from 1 to 2 ifnecessary.

This shows telephone number and parameters for telephone modem. You mayconnect a telephone modem between computer and card reader if necessary.”S7=30” means that the modem connected to the PC calls maximum 30 sec.”DT” means ”DTMF”. If you change to ”D” if means ”interrupt signalling”.”CONNECT 1200” is a ”answer string sent by the modem”. After telenr$ youwrite the telephone number, and when you start AXBASE the computer calls thecard readers up.

This shows the name of the directory where the data is stored, i.e. the database.

Axbase has icon buttons in the main menu. These buttons have bitmap symbolsthat are designed for a VGA resolution. If you have another resolution on yourscreen the icons may have a white border and be off centre. This could be cor-rected if you change to scale% = 64.

These lines should normally never be changed.

These lines are only for the advanced user. This could be used to show an imageof the card holder but needs additional software and hardware in the PC.

These lines are also for the advanced user. It gives you the opportunity to sendevents on line to another application.

Save changes before exit note pad.1.2.5 AXBASE FOR MORE THAN ONE AXNET

If you want you can administrate several card reader installations from one placeand have the readers connected via telephone modems. One example could be acompany with two different working places with different personnel but with thesame administration. In this case you can have two copies of AXBASE that youcan rename to AXBASE 1 and AXBASE 2 with different icons. AXBASE 2 canbe connected via modem and have the telephone number written in the INI-fileand have the modem connected to COM 2. AXBASE 1 can communicate di-rectly via COM 1. In this case you build two separate card reader networks withtwo masters each communicating with it's own AXBASE.

1.2.6 IMPORTANT INFORMATION

If you by some reason should get problems retrieving events from card reader toPC you may check two things.

1. Open file C:\autoexec.bat in Note pad and see that your PC has an activewrite-cash memory e.g. smartdrv.2. Check that your PC does not have an UART-chip named 16550. Open File Runin the program manager and write MSD. Select Comports and at the bottom of thelist you will see which chip is used. If the machine uses 16550 the following hasto be done:

Start Note pad open file C:\windows\system.ini. Check under the headline[386Enh] that you have two lines:

Com1Fifo=0Com2Fifo=0

If not add these lines and save file.

If you look in the directory C:\axbase32 you will find a file user.bmp. This file isa bitmap corresponding to a grey field below the AXBASE32 logo in the mainmenu. You may open the file in Paint brush or MSpaint and write the name ofyour company or draw your company logo.

Now Axbase asks to fill in the number of the last reader or controller in the net-work.

Axbase now tries to establish contact with the readers.

If the program manage to establish a proper contact it will show a green light. Ifit shows a yellow you may have problem with the communication. If it shows ared light there is no contact with this reader/controller and you have to establishthis connection before you go on. If you have a big installation and you areanxious to get same of the readers working and solve the communication prob-lem later you can disconnect a ”red” reader by clicking on the on/off buttononce when the cursor is shown. You will not see any immediate result on thestatus but the next time the node is tested a red cross shows that the reader isdisconnected. After you have corrected the fault in the connection you reconnectthe reader by clicking on the ”on/off” button once more. After that you have tomake an Update for the door in the Doors form in the Installer menu.

2.2 TEST OF READERS

You are now in the main form which has a menu line at the top. Select the menuInstaller. Now you may choose from the following commands:

To be sure that the readers work correct, you should ask for a reader printoutfrom all readers. Choose Connection test. You will see the following dia-logueue box:

Choose which readers you want and fill in the numbers. The readout to thescreen will look something like this:

The window that will fill the screen, has a scroll bar on the right hand sidewhich you can use to compare the print outs from the different readers. You canchange the size of, or move this window as in other Windows-programs. Weshall now interpret the reader printouts. Below you can see what such a printoutmay look like:

-Line 1 shows to which reader the printout belongs, in this case reader 2.

-Line 2 shows a printout of the reader clock. Accordingly we can check ifthe reader has the correct time. Later we will come back to set time in thereaders.

-Line 3 shows version number of the reader software. If the version num-ber is less than 0.80, it can not run with a Axbase 2.2. If you have readerswith different software versions in the same network, Axbase will auto-matically reduce the functions to the reader software with the lowestnumber.

-Line 4 shows the number of free memory locations.

-Line 5 shows the time the reader has been installed i.e. has been powered.

-Line 6 Readings and line 7 Defect readings shall be interpreted in the fol-lowing way:

* If you have a compact reader you have had 499 readings on the compactreader and 66 on the parallel reader. Of these the compact reader has had36 false readings and the parallel reader 12.

* If you have a reader central, the reader connected to terminal 7 has had499 with 36 faults readings and the reader connected to terminal 6 has had66 with 12 fault.

Page 16: Axema AXBASE 32 - Argus Zutrittskontrolle · 2019-09-05 · 4 1. Installation Axema AXBASE 32 Enter a card for testing. - Press 112233 #01 swipe card # * - Swipe the card and the

Axema AXBASE 32

-Line 8 Axnet fault is an indication of how well the communicationworks. In principle you could say that after being installed at least oneday, the value should be less than 500 ppm. A higher value indicates dis-turbance on the communication.

Note: It's very important that check if the lines 1,3 and 8 are correct, otherwiseyou could not be sure that the installation is working satisfactory.

You may run Axnet status a couple of times to make sure all readers take part inthe communication. During communication tests the ppm-value could increasetemporarily. This is normal.

You can also order a print out from a special reader. Choose Installer andReader printouts. You will see the following dialogueue box:

Fill in the number ( the node address) of the reader, mark a printout and clickOK.

To get a quick overview of the communication you normally look at the Axnetstatus.

When the net test is OK the next step will be to install doors. This means to pro-gram door parameters, which are due to the installation , and which are not bechanged by the end user. Choose the menu Installer and the command Doors.

Start by clicking on Install. Axbase will now initiate the reader/controller. Aflashing cursor will be seen in the left side of the text box Door name:. Writethe name of the first door in the box and click Ok.. In the box Node address youwill see the first node address which is 1. In the textbox Type you will seewhich model of card reader you have on this address. In the Status box you seewhich software version you have in the reader and how many net tests has beendone and the results. This is useful for trouble shooting. You can clear this

counter with the button.

If you have a type 22 reader, you may have to fill in the text box Alarm func-tion. As mentioned in the Axbase manual, the reader can control an alarm cen-tral or bypass an alarm sensor. Because of that the alarm relay could be pro-grammed to work in three different ways: bistable, monostable, where the relayreleases after a programmable time or pulse, where the relay is activated onlyfor a short while. In pulse mode the reader waits for a feedback from the alarmcentral that the status has changed, after which the relay releases. If no feedbackoccurs within 10 seconds, the relay is released anyway. If you have more than

Page 18: Axema AXBASE 32 - Argus Zutrittskontrolle · 2019-09-05 · 4 1. Installation Axema AXBASE 32 Enter a card for testing. - Press 112233 #01 swipe card # * - Swipe the card and the

one reader connected to the same alarm central, you have to use pulse mode andthe readers should normally be connected in series. Choose the correct functionby marking one option in the text box Type of alarm.

If you choose Monostable function, you have to fill in the time for alarm by-pass in the text box.

Max. time for alarm bypass is 970 sec. If you don't have an alarm choose Nofunction.

In the same way we can decide the time for the warning buzzer. Note that thesummer is warning before alarm activation for all three types of alarm function, even before reactivating with monostable function. In the monostable mode youshould set the time to 0 sec. You could set the alarm bypass time to 40 sec. andthe warning time is 0 sec. You then set the delay for ”door open buzzer” in theusers Doors form to 30 sec. This will give you a warning after 30 sec. and analarm switch on after 40 sec.

Axema AXBASE 32

In the textbox Alarm acknowledge we choose if we want an external feedbackfrom the alarm central to connector PL2:31,32 or internal i.e. the reader knowsthe alarm status by itself. If you have connected the alarm-LED directly to theLED output of the alarm central, you should choose Int. alarm status continu-ous display.

Alarm indication decides if you want to have continuous signal on PL1:9 in thereader/controller or only 10 sec. after activation.

In the box Timezone alarm we decide if the alarm should be switched off whenthe programmed timezone for automatic alarm expires.

If you have a compact reader with parallel reader connected to P6 or a readercentral with a reader terminal on the same connector, you have to choose theactual alternative in the box Parallel reader on PL6.

In the next box we decide the function for Output 9 on PL1.(see the Axcardmanual) This output is normally used to control the alarm-LED on the -22model. If you have chosen to connect the alarm-LED directly to the LED outputof the alarm central or if you have the -23 model, you can use this output tocontrol an external "open door alarm"-relay or a "duress alarm" relay. If youhave chosen one of these, output 9 goes low when the alarm is activated. Therelay could control an external buzzer. Note: The output doesn't have any pro-tection so a diode must be placed parallel to the relay coil.

Axema AXBASE 32

We may also change the function of Input 27 PL2. This input is normally usedto activate the alarm central via a push-button. With this button you can changethe function of the input. If the box is marked input 27 works in the followingway:

High level (switch open) activation of alarm can not be done from reader.Low level (switch closed) activation of alarm can be done from reader.

When everything is filled in you go to the next door. You can do that with theyellow arrow button or you can pick one from the list you see when you click onthe down arrow at the Door name box.

If you have a reader type 23 you will have to fill in Anti-Pass Back (APB) pa-rameters instead of alarm parameters. APB could be time controlled i.e. the cardcould not be used for a second access until after a programmed time, or absolutewhich means that an in-passage has to be followed by an out-passage.

When the readers are linked together in a Axnet system the APB can work inthree ways:

1.) - System APB. When a card is swiped in one of the "IN-readers",a message is transmitted to the other readers in the system that thiscard is now "IN". All "OUT-readers are now valid. This means that aAPB system can be built with single readers. One -23 can be "IN-reader" and another can be "OUT-reader".

2.) - Local APB. When a card is swiped in a reader, the APB-statusis only known by this reader. No message is broadcaster to the oth-ers. The only valid "OUT-reader" is the parallel reader or secondreader terminal of this reader. Local ABP can only be used whitcompact readers fitted with parallel reader or two reader centrals.

3.) - Timed system APB. When a card is swiped in a "IN-reader", atimer starts to count down in all readers. During the time the timer isrunning, the card is not valid in any "IN-reader". However the card isvalid in a "OUT-reader", and if the card is used to pass out, the timeris set to zero and the card will be valid for "IN-passage". The timerhas to be programmed in minutes.

When you have filled in the last door and clicked Ok, you will return to themain menu.

2.3.2 DELETE DOOR

If you choose the menu Options in the Installer Doors form you will find thecommand Delete door. This command can only be used to remove a door youhave started to program. It removes the door with the highest node address, andwhich has no time-zones attached.

2.3.3 UPDATE READER

If you by some reason need to change a reader or if you think that a reader haslost its information, you can update the memory of the reader from the data base.Start by initiating the reader. Choose Update and Ok. Update will take sometime.

2.3.4 PRINTOUT

You may also have a printout of doors.

Before you make a printout you have to make sure that you have chosen the cor-rect reader for the program. Go back to the main menu and select:

2.4.1 SYSTEM SET UP

Choose Installer System set up. You will see the following form:

If you by some reason should like to change any of the passwords, you can do soby writing the new password in the text box. The password is then changed inboth Axbase and the Master.

In the text box Max. events you fill in the number of events you want to store inthe computer. To determine this you have to know how much your free space onthe hard disc you want to use for storage of events. You can say that 1000 eventstakes approximately 150 kb to store. Set this value according to speed and usageof your PC. When the maximum value is reached, the old events are removedfrom the memory as new are entered.

In Last reader/controller you fill in the number of the last reader in the network. The master will now know how many readers take part of the communication. Ifyou have to expand a system with more readers you have to change this number.

4.1 INTRODUCTION

An access control installation consists several card readers connected in a net-work. The purpose of such an installation is to keep control of which personsshall have access to a building, when they shall have access and also how. Bykeeping control of out-passages and also register them, you could know who arein the building and for how long.

To control how a person gets access, you set a security level for the door. Thelowest security level is unlocked door. The other security levels are access code, which is a four digit code which is know to several people, card which normallyis a magstrip card with an eight digit number unique to every card, card + per-sonal code (PIN), two card access and two card access. Two card access takestwo valid cards within ten seconds to get access. You also have two card + PINand the highest level is locked door, which means door locked by the system. The security level could also be controlled by time zones. In this way you couldhave different security levels at different times. A time zone has a start time(hours and minutes), when the card starts to be valid and a stop time. The timezone also includes which days of the week the card is valid. Except workingdays and holidays you also have special days when the working time is less thannormal.

To control when a person shall have access, you set an access time for this per-sons card. An access time is built up with time-zones to decide when the card isvalid. A card could belong to three different types of card. The three types are:access cards, alarm cards and visitor cards. Access cards are used to open thedoor. Alarm cars are used to open the door but can also switch the burglar alarmon and off. A visitor card is an access card which is valid only for a limited timeor a programmed amount of accesses. The same card could work as alarm cardat one door and only as access card in an other.

To program an access control system you have to decide which persons shouldhave access to which doors when and how. If you have many doors and personsit could be difficult keep track on what you are doing. To make this work easierand less time-consuming we will structure it in the following way:

Page 31: Axema AXBASE 32 - Argus Zutrittskontrolle · 2019-09-05 · 4 1. Installation Axema AXBASE 32 Enter a card for testing. - Press 112233 #01 swipe card # * - Swipe the card and the

We shall now shortly go trough all steps that has to be done to build a Axbasedatabase. First in every headline you will se the button that opens the corre-sponding form. Next comes the name of the form and than a symbol and last themaximum value. After this we will go through every form in detail.

Axema AXBASE 32

Doors max 32

First we have to decide which security level each door should have and programthe corresponding time zones.

Access Zones max 32

Next step will be to gather the doors which leads to the same area and are usedby the same persons. By doing so we create access zones. The access zone”Garage” could include two gates and one door.

Access Times max 8

To avoid the programming of several time zones for each person we shall createaccess times. An access time could consist of one or more time zones. The ac-cess time ”Business time” could be 0800 - 1200 and 1300 - 1700 Monday to.Thursday and 0800 - 1200 and 1300 - 1600 Friday.

Personnel Groups max 2000

To make the work entering persons easier, we first create personnel groups. Apersonnel group includes persons which have equal jobs, the same workingtimes and should have access to the same areas. ”Staff personnel” could be anexample of a personnel group. Each personnel group could be connected to oneor more access zone. The connection also includes an access time and a type ofcard. The personnel group ”Staff personnel” could have access to the accesszone ”Ware house” during a time decided by the access time ”Business time”and only with an ”Access card”. You could also connect a personnel group to asingle door which is not included in a access zone.

Page 33: Axema AXBASE 32 - Argus Zutrittskontrolle · 2019-09-05 · 4 1. Installation Axema AXBASE 32 Enter a card for testing. - Press 112233 #01 swipe card # * - Swipe the card and the

Axema AXBASE 32

Persons max 2000

Now we are ready to start entering persons. Each person is recorded with nameand card number. Then you choose a personnel group which the person shouldbelong to. You will then see the group access the person has received. You canchange an access zone and/or access time and/or card type and by doing so theaccess will change to personal access. It is also possible to connect a person di-rectly to a special door with an access time and type of card. In this case thedoor must not belong to any access zone.

4.2 PROGRAMMING OF DOORS

Start Axbase. You will get question if you want to work in the OFF-line mode. The normal way is to work On-line. In that case all information is transferreddirectly to the readers. However if you are programming during ”rush hour” thecommunication will reduce the capacity for the reader to work as access point. In this case you can work in the Off-line mode and restart Axbase On-line at alater time. You can also use Off-line if you have a Laptop computer.

Click No and you will see the following form:

Page 34: Axema AXBASE 32 - Argus Zutrittskontrolle · 2019-09-05 · 4 1. Installation Axema AXBASE 32 Enter a card for testing. - Press 112233 #01 swipe card # * - Swipe the card and the

At the top of the form you will see the name of the first door. We start with fill-ing in the text box for Door opening time. This is the time you have to open thedoor. If you have a -23 you also have to fill in an opening time for door 2.

Next we fill in the time you have to close the door before the buzzer starts towarn that the door hasn't been closed.

Now we fill in the box Access codes. You may have up to eight different codesto open the door. Write 4 digits in the text box Access code 1: Next we have toprogram when the code should be valid. This is done by defining a timezone forthe code. Choose the button Timezone to the left of the box. The following subform will show on the screen:

Start with choosing the button Add timezone. You will see the following dia-logueue box:

Fill in start time and stop time in the text boxes. You also have to choose whichdays should be included in the timezone. This is done with the cross boxes. When you are finished choose Ok.

We will now return to the sub form. If you want to have more timezones con-nected to access code 1, you choose Add timezone once more and program nexttimezone. When you are finished with timezones for access code 1, you chooseOK and you are back in the main form. If you want to, you can program moreopening codes with accompanying timezones.

If you want to remove a timezone, you click on Timezone, Change and Deletein the dialogueue box.

Next step will be to fill in the box Security levels. Security levels are describedin the chapter 1. Choose timezones and program accompanying timezones.Normally you have Card + PIN during night and weekends and a lower leverduring working time. Note: For unspecified time Card + PIN is valid.

The function Alert alarm which is only included in -22, means that the alarmwill be automatically switch on at the start of the timezone, but will not beswitched off at the end of the timezone. On the other hand, if the alarm isswitched off via the reader during the timezone, it will be automaticallyswitched on one hour later. Of curse the alarm warning buzzer will sound beforeswitch on. This means that if you go home and forget to switch the alarm on, thealarm will be automatically activated within an hour. When the alarm is acti-vated the security level is automatically raised to Alarm card + PIN, independentof programmed level. Note: To get the exit button working, you have to pro-gram a timezone.

Finally we have to decide if we want to record accesses with exit button and ac-cess code. These accesses could not be connected to any specific person, andbecause of that they are of less interest.

As you can see the timezone button connected to a chosen function has a differ-ent colour.

To get next door use and enter data. When you are finished with the doors,

you can browse through the list using and to check the result. When youare satisfied choose OK.

Open the form by using the -button in the main menu. The followingwill show on the screen:

The first time you open this form you will have a choice of three different con-figurations:

Automatic with One zone per door means that each door will correspond toone geographic zone.

Automatic with One zone for all doors means that all doors will belong to oneand the same zone.

before you open another program. Some screen savers may also have a high pri-ority. The one included in Windows desktop could be used without problems.

All data you have programmed and all events are stored in the subdirectory"Data" in the directory "Axbase 32". In the same directory you also have a sub-directory named ”Backup”. Every time Axbase checks the database a backup isautomatically placed in this directory. If during checking it finds a corrupt fileits replaced with a new one from the backup. You can also make a manualbackup and database check by clicking Special and Backup database.

Don’t forget to make a backup to discett or other media.

If you have a card reader with Anti-Pass Back in your system and somethinggoes wrong, you may have to neutralise the APB-cards. This means that allAPB-cards could be used for both in- and outpassing independent of the lastpassage. Select Special and APB reset. In the following box choose Yes.

Note: You must never use the character . (dot) in a name anywhere in Ax-base!
