HEADLINES

It was lovely to welcome everyone back after our half term break. Our Iceland ex-

plorers have been inspired by their recent trip, and I am delighted to hear that they

represented the school so brilliantly and acted as excellent ambassadors. Thank you

to all the pupils and to all the staff.

This week we have explored our 5 Keys to Success during our assemblies. On Thurs-

day our Remembrance assembly, led by 8BJ, was very thoughtful. We commemorat-

ed the many families connected to the Royal British Legion and recognised the sacri-

fices made by the Armed Forces community, past and present. We listened to some

beautiful singing by our Senior Choir. Thank you to our parents who supported the

assembly.

Year 6 pupils spent a day “experiencing” all Year 7 and Year 8 has to offer with a ukulele lesson, water po-

lo, a drama workshop, science experiments, driving the blue devil and some time in the woods and zorb-

ing. Watch the video that they filmed during the day here.

Our rehearsals for Annie are well on their way, further information concerning the performances and rou-

tines for the day can be found in the newsletter.

Today all parents will receive a ParentMail with a link to the Rose Hill School parent survey, it will close on

Monday 26 November. I encourage parents to complete the survey which provides us with important in-

formation as we plan our future.

Best wishes

Emma Neville, Head

ANNIE

Rehearsals are in full swing for the Annie production on Thursday 22 and Friday

23 November. If you have not yet requested tickets, please contact Mrs. Bains

on [email protected] as soon as possible.

On the performance days we would encourage all Year 3, 4 and 5 pupils to be picked up from school at

4pm. There will be no clubs after school on Thursday or Friday for Years 3, 4 & 5, but prep will be running as

usual. Please ensure that children have had something to eat before the show. All children must be back

in school by 5.30pm at the latest.

Children will be ready for collection from the quad from 8.20pm. Thank you in advance for your support.

CHILDREN IN NEED

The School Council will be delivering a Children in Need assembly on

Friday 16th November. All pupils, Pre-Prep and Prep, are encouraged

to wear something spotty to supplement their school uniform, which

could include Children in Need merchandise. A donation of £1 is sug-

gested.

As in previous years, Prep School children have been encouraged to run various stalls at break time. Pupils

must have gained prior approval from Mr Stacey. Donations should be brought in by Prep School children

wishing to take part in the activities at break time.

KENT POLICE It has been brought to the attention of Police that a number of young people are viewing a site called

‘Doki Doki Literature Club’. You may or may not be aware that the game makes references to knives, de-

pression, suicide and self-harm. Please keep an eye out, raise awareness to staff and advice parents ac-

cordingly. Any queries please contact [email protected]

PUPIL NEWS

Well done to all the Rose Hill pupils who participated in the Tunbridge

Wells Hockey Club triangulars at the weekend.

Y8 TRIP TO TONBRIDGE GALLERY On 5 October 2018, we went to visit Tonbridge School’s ‘4B: Exploring Contemporary Drawing’ art exhibi-

tion, which took place in the Old School’s Gallery. Sara, the art educator and Emily, the Art curator greet-

ed us and introduced us to the four artists, Jeanette Barnes, Christy Burdock and Meghana Bisineer and

Louise Bourgeois. The work ranged from huge chalk pastel drawings by Jeanette Barnes showing the con-

struction work of the Olympic Park to small dry point prints by Louise Bourgeois. After an interesting guided

tour, talk and discussion around the exhibition we chose our favourite artwork and sketched it in our

sketchbooks.

Most of us really enjoyed Louise Bourgeois work because we all felt her work was amusing, intriguing and

‘quirky’. Abi did a study of her work called ‘Woman in a bathtub’. Finlay copied one of her dry point print

called ‘Sculptress’ and Sam chose ‘Scissors’. Rufus, Dylan and Honor selected sections of Christy Burdocks

art, which were large scale illustrative pencil drawings with thought provoking topics. We had the whole

gallery to ourselves which meant we could move around and talk about the artwork as if it was a class-

room. It was fascinating to see such a variety of drawings ranging in size, style and techniques. A great art

trip. Rufus, Sam, Abi, Dylan and Finly

TOM PALMER VISIT We were joined by author Tom Palmer on Friday19 October. Tom writes books which deliver a number of

key messages or life lessons through the medium of sport. Tom’s latest book the Armistice Runner follows a

Cross Country running girl who unearths a number of her Great-Grandfathers diaries from his time in WW1.

Tom spoke to pupils in Year 2-8 about his motivation for writing, his research into the war and his passion for

sport and writing.

ICELAND TRIP On Monday 22

October, 10

Year 6s, Miss

Roberts and Mrs

Morgan went

on a trip to Ice-

land. We were

there for four

days and during

that time we

visited many

places.

Some of the first

things we did

was to visit a

magnificent

church which

was made of

quartz columns.

We also got to

visit the Perlan.

The Perlan is a a large building with a dome on the top

so you can see across Reykjavik. This building used to be

used as a large water tank. We also got to visit the black

beach where the sand is black and the waves are gi-

normous.

The next day we visited a waterfall called Seljalandsfoss.

At Seljalandsfoss we got to walk behind it and saw it

from another point of view and it was super pretty. An-

other great day was when we visited the hot spring

called the Secret Lagoon. We all got to swim in the la-

goon and it was really warm like being in a bath! We

also got to see the geysers which smelt of sulphur which

smells like rotten egg! We also went to Skogafoss where

we did a competition where we had to guess how

many stairs there were to the top. It turns out there are

370 and we walked them all!

We saw another waterfall called Gullfoss where we learnt how the water has eroded away the rock.

One of my favourite sites that we visited was the Glacier. A Glacier is a really big block of ice that keeps mov-

ing as the ice melts. 20 years ago the glacier would have been bigger than it is today.

Iceland grows 2cm every year because of volcanic movement.

A funny fact I learnt was that Icelandic people believe in elves. They have to ask someone who can talk to

elves to ask them if they can build a road and whether they have to go round a specific rock!!

Takk (thank you in Icelandic) to Mrs Morgan and Miss Roberts for organising such a fun trip!

U9 GIRLS HOCKEY

Well done to our fabulous U9 girls who

played at the Lingfield College hockey tour-

nament. The girls had fun and came 3rd

overall.

The last day of term saw pupils take part in our

Interhouse Cross Country, The Rose Hill

‘CRAF’ (Compulsory Run Around the Fields). Pu-

pils from Years 2 through to Year 8 competed in

a number of graded races in order to win points

for their house. Pupils were awarded points in

relation to their finishing position in order boost

their house totals. The afternoon saw 10 races

ran with the top 3 runners from each race re-

ceiving medals from author Tom Palmer who

had joined us for the day.

Well done to all the runners and thank you to the

many parents and grandparents who attended

the event.
