LESSON 3
The Major Chakras (Part 1)
Figure 1 - 3
“Chakra‖ is an ancient Sanskrit word whose literal meaning is ‗wheel‘.
These centres were named chakras because of the apparent circular shape of the
spinning energy vortices which exist in our subtle etheric body (see Figure 1–
3). There are seven main chakras and they are located along the spine extending
out through the front and through the back of the body.
As we have already briefly seen, each chakra has a number of specific
qualities that correspond to the refinement of energy from the base-level
material-self identity, located at the first chakra Muladhara, all the way up to
the higher vibration spirit-level awareness of our very being at the crown chakra
Sahasrara. These energy centres represent our highest level of integration
which are split (as if by a prism) into a spectrum of colours. One should
remember at this point that all matter is, in its essence, a form of frozen light.
In the last lesson we introduced the important nadis IDA, PINGALA and
SUSHUMNA. These nadis may be considered as connected energy paths that
ascend the spinal column.

The chakras are formed at the junction of these three connected energy paths,
one on each side of the central channel known as the Sushumna. The two lesser
paths of energy, namely the Pingala on the right and Ida on the left, are known
to run parallel to the spinal cord.
Chakras both take up and collect the life force energy we call prana, and
transform and pass on this energy. The chakras perform as gateways for the
flow of energy and life into our physical body. The material body is unable to
exist without the chakras.
As has already been indicated in an earlier lesson, each chakra is associated
with a certain part of the body, and a certain organ to which it provides the
energy it needs to perform its physical tasks. In addition to this, just as every
organ in the human body has its equivalent representation and existence on the
mental and spiritual level, every chakra corresponds to a specific aspect of
human behaviour and development.
As no two people are the same, we need to be aware that the circular
spirals of energy we call chakras vary in both physical size and activity from
person to person. Each chakra vibrates at different levels relative to the
awareness of the individual, and also relative to their ability to integrate the
characteristics of each chakra into their daily life.
The openness, and therefore the flow, of prana energy through the
chakras determine our state of health and balance. It is the understanding of the
body‘s subtle energy system that empowers us to maintain balance and harmony
on the physical, mental and spiritual level.
All the various systems of meditation and yoga aim at one thing; the
balancing of the energy of the chakras by purifying the lower frequency
energies and guiding them upwards. With an approach to living consciously,
and an awareness of how we acquire and distribute our energies, we learn to
balance the life force with our mental, physical, and spiritual selves.
In order to create harmony with our physical and spiritual nature, our
denser lower energies need to resonate with the energies of the upper chakras.
Thus the base tendencies have to be raised to incorporate a heart-felt spiritual
focus expressed in all areas of our being.

Each of the upper-level chakra energies corresponds and refines a lower level
counterpart thus:
7
with 1 Sahasrara with Muladhara
6 with 2 Ajna with Svadhisthana
5 with 3 Vishuddha with Manipura
At the very centre of our being therefore, is the full integration of chakra
energies.
Each chakra centre has an integral function in creating our energetic
balance. It is through the study of our energetic and physical being that we can
create health, emotional stability, and spiritual alignment. We will now look at
each major chakra in turn, commencing with the Root chakra, Muladhara.

Frequent colds or cold hands and cold feet.
Root
Stimulants
Physical exercise and restful sleeps, gardening, pottery and
clay. Red food & drink. Red gemstones, red clothing, bathing
in red, etc. Using red oils such as ylang ylang or sandalwood
essential oils.
This is the seat of physical vitality. Its energy is the energy of the
fundamental urge to survive. It activates and regulates those mechanisms that
keep the physical body alive. It is the chakra whose main aspect is innocence.
For the first chakra, long-term healing comes from very physical
activities. Because the first chakra has the most density, and is the one most
related to the physical body, a typical useful physical activity is hatha yoga.
Treatments that use the sense of smell, such as aromatherapy, work well too
because this chakra is related to the sense of smell. Gemstones as used in crystal
healing are good for first chakra healing. This is because stones are from the
earth, and earth is the element of this chakra. Because of the earth connection
one can see that gardening is also a sensible healing activity for the root chakra.
Diseases associated with the Root chakra (Muladhara):
Addictions, Addictive Behaviour, Ankle problems, Anorexia, Backaches,
Blood diseases, Bones, Cold feet, Constipation, Colitis, Depression, Diarrhoea,
Eczema, Frequent urination, Gambling, Glaucoma, Haemorrhoids, Hips,

sensation (such as different food tastes). Orange food & drink.
Orange gemstones and orange clothing. Using orange oils such
as melissa or orange essential oils.
This chakra together with its associated energy is the centre for creating
relationships of all kinds. It is here that we develop our inward-focused sense
of self and our outward-focused awareness of others and the outer world. The
feelings of other people are directly perceived through mastery of this chakra‘s
energy
The sacral chakra is also very dense and physical; therefore hatha yoga is
useful here as well. Healing with suitable foods such as juicy orange foods like
oranges, mangoes, and pumpkins, works well for this chakra. That is because it
is related to the sense of taste. Swimming exercises are also useful because this
chakra is related to the water element.

The solar chakra is located at the centre of the physical body. This is the
place where physical energy is distributed throughout the body. It is the centre
for unrefined emotions and is also the centre of one‘s personal power. It is this
chakra that gives us the sense of complete satisfaction and contentment. Our
creativity is fuelled by our power of will.
Visual therapy is very good for this chakra, located in the solar plexus,
because our consciousness, our mental reasoning ability, and our self-image, are
all associated with this third chakra. This third chakra is related to the fire
element so solar activities such as sun bathing are good. Any method that
builds confidence is good for the 3rd chakra. All kinds of core work such as
power yoga or breathing that stokes your core being are very good for the solar
plexus chakra.

such as eucalyptus or pine essential oils.
This chakra is the centre of real and unconditional affection, spiritual
growth, compassion, devotion, and love. It is the bridge that connects the lower
and higher energies, or one might say the lower and higher frequencies of our
being. It is the place where our spirit, our true self resides.
The heart chakra is the bridge between the lower physically-oriented
chakras and the upper spiritually-oriented chakras, so touch may be considered
good. There have been studies to show that babies thrive when nurses and
nannies hold them. This is also true for adults. Humans derive great benefit
from hugging. It is known to be one of the simplest ways to boost and balance
the heart chakra energy. One might also note that Meridian Psychotherapy
incorporating EFT is very good for this chakra. All forms of breathing
exercises are excellent for this chakra because this chakra is involved in our
respiration; the element here is air.
Diseases associated with the Heart chakra (Anahata):
Allergies, Asthma, Blood circulation, Breast Cancer, Bronchitis, Chest
Congestion, Circulation problems, Cough, Fatigue, Heart Diseases, High Blood
pressure, Hyperventilation, Immunity, Influenza, Lungs, Nail biting, Pain in

The throat chakra is the centre for communication, self-expression, and
creativity. It is here that the quiet inner voice of one‘s truth is expressed. It is
the chakra of diplomacy, of our pure relationships with others.
For the throat chakra, sound healing is effective. This technique may be
used in two simple ways; putting sound ‗out‘ in the form of mantras and
chanting, and taking sound ‗in‘ in the form of crystal bowls and/or mantras.

Visualisation is the best healing tool. This is because the third eye is
pivotal for our dreams and other internal visualisations. Meditations are the best
way to perform inward visualisation. All that is necessary is to close one‘s eyes
and create a positive world within the imagination. When one successfully does
this, a change can occur in one‘s whole physiology. The result of this is to cause
one to interact more positively and confidently with the external world.

This chakra represents the highest level of consciousness and
enlightenment. It is the connective centre to spirit. This centre integrates all the
chakras with their respective qualities. Mastering the lower vibrational aspects
of our being we reside in the full awareness that we are spiritual beings living a
human existence
For this, the seventh or crown chakra, meditation is very effective.

The seven chakras and the endocrine system
Chakras and Body Organs
When the body‘s internal organs do not function properly, then
neither does one‘s health. Proper functioning of the organs and endocrine
system is necessary for good health and well-being. The endocrine glands each
secrete hormones, and it is these hormones that regulate various functions
throughout the body. It is necessary that all is in balance in order for us to feel
and actually be the condition we always refer to as ―well‖.
Each endocrine gland corresponds to a major Chakra. When one Chakra
is out of balance it is unable to generate the free flow of subtle energy that is
needed for healthy balance to be created and maintained. When this imbalance
occurs one can become either physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually,
out of balance. The reality of such a situation is usually a combination of all of
these. By being in balance one achieves the optimum condition to create the
best physical, emotional, and mental health, states.
If one of these endocrine glands does not function correctly then this will
affects all of the other glands; in particular the pituitary and hypothalamus.

Throat Vishuddha Thyroid/Parathyroid
Brow Ajna Pituitary/Hypothalamus
Crown Sahasrara Pineal
Table 1 - 3
As may be seen in Figure 2-3 and in Table 1- 3 the endocrine glands are
the pineal, pituitary/hypothalamus, thyroid/parathyroid, thymus, pancreas,
gonads (testes or ovaries), and adrenals. These glands govern and regulate the
continuous and prolonged functions of growth and development, cellular
metabolism, energy, our blood balance of nutrients, reproduction, body water,
and electrolytes. They are also the body's defences against stress. Each of these
endocrine glands has a correspondence with one of the 7 main chakras. These
chakras transmit and receive subtle energy to and from each one of the
endocrine glands.
It is important to take note that each one of these chakras and glands are
of equal importance. Even when one chakra is out of balance, it will affect the
energy flow by creating a blockage, and thus prevents energy being in free-flow
throughout the other chakra centres.
