REDHAWKS SERVE OVER SUMMER
GROW-A-ROW TRIP A
SUCCESS
This July we took fifty PHS
students to America’s Grow-a-
Row as part of our summer
service opportunities. We spent
the morning planting pepper
plants that will be harvested in
the Fall and given to people in
need. It was a great day of
hands-on service, and we will
continue our tradition of
bringing our freshmen to Grow-
a-Row in the fall.

After many years of research and preparation, PHS and PHHS will be moving to a Modified Drop Schedule for the
2019-20 school year. In preparation for this change, we have sent teams of administrators, teachers and students to
view the schedule in action and gave them the chance to talk to the professionals and teenagers that experience it every
day. We have looked over our buildings to make sure we are physically prepared and we have worked with our teachers
to make sure they are pedagogically prepared as well.
Needless to say, we are ecstatic about the new schedule and the benefits that it will bring to our students and staff. It
is no secret that it is tough being a teenager today, and we look forward to all of the social-emotional benefits of the
Drop Schedule in addition to the academic benefits, specifically, a much-needed lunch break for all students, the ability
to have lunch with all of your friends, the benefit of having classes at different times of the day, and getting a mental
break from classes when they drop out of the schedule. We plan on using Unit Lunch as a time to not only eat and
decompress but also as an opportunity to meet with teachers, get involved in club meetings, or attend workshops that
will be offered throughout the year.
As we’ve moved along on the scheduling process, we’ve been thrilled at the old and new courses that are filling up and
running next year. With the new flexibility, students are able to try new classes and pursue interests that they couldn’t
without sacrificing their lunch in the past. Courses include: AP Human Geography, Literature and Film, Heroes and
Mythology, and Holocaust and Genocide Studies. In addition, students now have the option of taking courses online
that we do offer in Parsippany through Virtual High School (VHS).
Very shortly, we will be sending home a calendar for the year that will outline all of the details of the new schedule
including the length and rotation of classes, variations of the bell schedule, and a calendar for the entire year that
identifies what each day is assigned as (ABC or D). As always, if you have questions please reach out to your
respective building principal or your child’s guidance counselor.
ROTATING DROP SCHEDULE SET FOR 2019-20 ROTATING
GRAINS OF HOPE AT PAR HIGH THIS FALL One of the many great attributes of Parsippany High School is its wonderful sense of community outreach; it is like
no other! One of the focuses here at Parsippany High School has been addressing hunger in New Jersey and we have
found another great way to address that need. This year, November 17th, 2019 we will host our very own Meal
Packaging Event here at Parsippany High School.
Through The Community Outreach organization we will:
• Purchase carefully selected and nutritionally beneficial dry ingredients in bulk
• Package those ingredients into ready-to-cook plastic pouches during a community meal packaging event
• Gather 600-800 people of all ages to volunteer their services
• Donate the ready-to-cook meals locally to The Community Food Bank of NJ
• Provide a wholesome meal to a child or adult at a cost of only 25 CENTS each
41 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE US ARE FOOD INSECURE. MORE THAN 900,000 OF THEM LIVE RIGHT
HERE IN NEW JERSEY. NEARLY 270,000 OF THEM ARE CHILDREN
Our fundraising goal is $20,000, which provides us the opportunity to package 80,000 meals!
Help us reach our goal and fight hunger one meal at a time.

CHINESE
STUDENTS VISIT
PARSIPPANY
This summer,
approximately fifty
middle school students
from China visited
Parsippany Schools. As
part of their trip, we had
five PHS students
volunteer to do some
ice-breakers and to
answer some questions
about life as an
American teenager.
Thanks to Jessica,
Sydney, Sabrina,
Matthew and Andrew
for helping out and
being so friendly.
CJ BERNAUER SWIMS AT

Congrats to PHS Junior CJ Bernauer
who qualified for and competed at
Swimming Nationals, finishing 14th
in the 1500m Freestyle and 17th in
the 400m Individual Medley.
PAINT WEEK AT PAR HIGH
Thanks to all of the Par High students
who volunteered to help out during
Paint Week 2019. This year we
painted the picnic tables we’ll be
using for Unit Lunch and then
worked on some additional Book
Spine Lockers in the Main Hallway.
As usual, your effort, talents and
creativity are appreciated.
FRESHMEN PARENT Q&A
Thanks to all of the parents and incoming freshmen
who attended our annual “Freshmen Parent Q&A.”
Students and parents got to ask questions, learn about
the new schedule and take a crack at their lockers. In
addition, thanks to Tom, Meera, Mia, Sumaiya and
Eileen for lending their expertise on what to expect at
Par High.
FOOF BANK TRIP ANOTHER SUCCESS
Thanks to all the PHS students who volunteered a day
in August to sort and organize food at the Community

organizing and boxing food and food items that will
be given to various people in need throughout the
state.

entire student body will be eating lunch at the same time. Students will be able to eat in both Cafeterias,
in the Gymnasium, in some Halls and in the Courtyards. Students will also be able to attend club meetings,
get extra help, use the Media Center, etc… Throughout the year we will be having presentations in the
Auditorium on various topics (college, NHS, mindfulness, etc…). We look forward to good things
happening during Unit Lunch.
WYKA EXCELS AT

Par High senior Tyler Wyka
had a great experience at
Boys State this summer.
While he was there he
became the mayor of his city
and even the County

For his leadership and
performance, he was
nominated for The Gordon
