As toddlers, we drive our parents crazy by endlessly asking the simple question, “Why?” When repeated often enough, that question inevitably receives the exasperated answer, “Because I say so!” As adults we sometimes stop asking questions, or at least we stop asking the questions that really matter to us. We give up on the search for meaning and abandon the attempt to make sense of life, and we try not to think about those searching questions that nag away within us: Who am I? Why do I matter? What is the purpose of my life? What will happen to me when I die? The reason that we stop asking these kinds of questions may well be that we are not at all confident that we will ever find satisfying answers to them. We choose to live with uncertainty, rather than confronting the most basic questions about our own existence. But it is not easy to live without a clear understanding of what life is all about. Christians believe that the Bible provides answers to our deepest questions. It does not answer all of our questions, but it tells us all that we need to know in order to make sense of life. It reveals who God is, how we can be at peace with him, and what it means to trust in him. The Bible introduces us to the one person who does have all the answers. But the Bible also raises some searching questions: Why does a loving God allow suffering? Is there only one way to God? Does science contradict the Bible? These are not easy questions, but we must wrestle with them, if we are to make any sense of life. We are going to be addressing some of these kinds of questions at our Exe Valley Central services in August. You’ll find details of these services on Page 8 in the magazine. Why not come along and join us in exploring some of these searching questions? Steve QUESTIONS QUESTIONS

Life is full of questions.

From very early on in life westart to ask questions. Astoddlers, we drive our parentscrazy by endlessly askingthe simple question, “Why?”When repeated often enough, that question inevitablyreceives the exasperatedanswer, “Because I say so!”

As adults we sometimes stopasking questions, or at leastwe stop asking the questionsthat really matter to us. Wegive up on the search formeaning and abandon theattempt to make sense of life, and we try not to think aboutthose searching questionsthat nag away within us: Whoam I? Why do I matter? Whatis the purpose of my life? What will happen to me whenI die?

The reason that we stopasking these kinds ofquestions may well be that we

are not at all confident that wewill ever find satisfyinganswers to them. We chooseto live with uncertainty, ratherthan confronting the mostbasic questions about ourown existence. But it is noteasy to live without a clearunderstanding of what life isall about.

Christians believe that theBible provides answers to ourdeepest questions. It doesnot answer all of ourquestions, but it tells us allthat we need to know in orderto make sense of life. Itreveals who God is, how wecan be at peace with him, andwhat it means to trust in him.

The Bible introduces us to theone person who does have allthe answers.

But the Bible also raisessome searching questions:Why does a loving God allowsuffering? Is there only oneway to God? Does sciencecontradict the Bible? Theseare not easy questions, butwe must wrestle with them, ifwe are to make any sense oflife.

We are going to beaddressing some of thesekinds of questions at our ExeValley Central services inAugust. You’ll find details ofthese services on Page 8 inthe magazine. Why not comealong and join us in exploringsome of these searchingquestions?

ANN’S NATURE NOTES

Recently there has been a lot of talkabout the interaction of species.

The obvious effects I touched on in thelast edition, when an alien is let loose inan area. The latest is the Asian SpinedToad that found its way to Madagascar, last year, probably via a container ship.It has already caused deaths in poultryand other domestic animals plusaquatic and terrestrial plants. Let’shope that it does not cause as manyproblems as the Cane Toad in Australia. All nature is interdependent. If the Blue

Tits do not hatch at about the sametime as the caterpillars and aphidsappear, then they will starve. It isremarkable that as the seasons change, the hatching varies with this timing. Itwould seem that the Spring is gettingearlier and the Blue Tits are nestingearlier and the aphids the same. Oneproblem over this balance is, what onedoes about my pet hate - the slugs andsnails. If we kill them, then there is lessfood for the Song Thrush. I used to saythat I had drunken Thrushes when Itried to dispatch the snails bybeer/wine traps (dregs I may say) andthen throw them away. I thought thatthere was always a risk that theThrushes would eat these pickledgastropods and become anebriated !

Another problem of modern farming, ofall sorts, is mono-culture. If there arefields of only one crop, anything thatdoes not eat that crop will go elsewhere. Now, with the development of insectrepelling crops to improve the yields -as there are more human mouths tofeed - then there are no insects. Thisis not so good for insect eating birdslike the Skylarks.

The Stewardship programme was goodas it kept a variety of flowers/weedsnear the hedgerows for food/cover forbirds/mammals. The hedgerows wereconsidered the highways for the birds, going from one area to another.Gardens have a variety of flowers, some good for butterflies and some forbees, so keep growing different things.Try to avoid double varieties becausethis makes it hard for insects to get tothe pollen. It is surprising what a largeecosystem each one of us can createin our gardens. With more area beingconcreted over, the gardens of Englandare becoming ever more important forwildlife. It does adapt. As far asPeregrines are concerned humanshave created wonderful rock faces forroosting - Cathedrals - which they take

full advantage of, and they have a readyfood supply nearby - flocks of pigeons!!

Conclusion - enjoy the world aroundyou but realize that each one of us canmake a difference to other species andone hopes for the best. We are alldependant on each other. “No man isan island”.

CHRISTIAN - a poem byMaya Angelou 1928 – 2014

Maya was an African-Americanborn in St Louis. She devoted

her life to the Civil Rights movementand had worked with Martin LutherKing. She recited her poem “On thePulse of Morning” at theinauguration of President Clinton in1993. She received dozens of awardsand over fifty honorary degrees. Shewas best known for her series of sevenauto-biographies which started with

“I know why the Caged Bird sings” –telling of her life up to the age ofseventeen.

When I say … “I am a Christian”I’m not shouting “I’m clean livin’”I’m whispering “I was lost”,now I’m found and forgiven.

When I say … “I am a Christian”I don’t speak of this with pride,I’m confessing that I stumbleand need CHRIST to be my guide.

When I say … “I am a Christian”I’m not trying to be strong.I’m professing that I’m weakand need HIS strength to carry on.

When I say … “I am a Christian”I’m not bragging of success.I’m admitting I have failedand need God to clean my mess.

When I say … “I am a Christian”I’m not claiming to be perfect,My flaws are far too visiblebut God believes I’m worth it.

When I say … “I am a Christian”I still feel the sting of pain.I have my share of heartachesso I call upon His name.

When I say … “I am a Christian”I’m not “holier than thou”.I’m just a simple sinnerwho received God’s good grace,somehow.

Many thanks to John Robertsfor this contribution

BELL RINGING NEWSIt is lovely to report that our bells arebeing well used and enjoyed by ringersfrom all over Devon and beyond. Anumber of groups from the DevonAssociation have been to practise theirvery polished call-change ringing hereand they are a pleasure to hear.

On a Friday morning in June we hosteda training session of “plain hunt” – thebasis of method ringing. Thesesessions are run by our local TroyteRinging Centre, and are usually held atHuntsham, but occasionally elsewhere.Since re-hanging, our bells are verysuitable for learners and it was good tosee five students and a similar numberof helpers and tutors all busily occupiedin our tower. (We provided one of thestudents and two helpers). On Saturday21 June, the Cruwys Morchard ringerswere to be found cooking sausagesand burgers and a large supply ofonions, down at the Tiverton RugbyClub. It was the 140th anniversary ofthe Guild of Devonshire Ringers, whichwe were asked to organise. It was avery happy day.

Stoodleigh

The whole village is deeply saddenedby the death of Gerald Palfrey, who

contributed so much to support andstrengthen the life of the Parish inwhich he was born and farmed all hislife. In his earlier years he was aleading light with the Young Farmers, amongst other things teaching the skillsof ploughing and becoming a wiseploughing competition judge. He was astalwart player and later supporter ofStoodleigh Cricket Club. Gerald quietlyhelped organise and gave of himself tomany fund-raising activities. He was arespected elder statesman ofStoodleigh Parish Council, contributinggreatly with his local knowledge andwise advice, and also served for 40years on the Parish Hall ManagementCommittee. His support for the churchnever wavered, both spiritually and

practically. As bell-ringing captain overmany years he taught fresh ringers likeRoger Hill and Jennifer Rowlandson andinstilled in them and others the love ofbell-ringing. He and the late Edward Hillorganised the annual mammothchurchyard clear-up and Gerald keptthe paths clear of weeds. In all that heundertook, Gerald’s twinkling eyes andsense of humour were always to thefore. So many words of praise haveflowed in, that it is not possible toinclude them all here. Gerald was aman with a quiet depth of practicalwisdom and knowledge, which hegenerously shared for the good of all.

We also received the sad news that IanPhillpotts had died, after being ill forsome months. He and Sue wereinvolved in many village activities whilethey were living here. Earlier in his life,Ian was a GP in Maidenhead andYorkshire. After Sue’s death, he movedfrom Stoodleigh to a flat overlooking thecounty cricket ground in Taunton.

It was a bright day of sunshine for theCoffee Morning held at Church Cottage, when a very good number attended andjust over £150 was raised for churchflowers and church upkeep. Thank youto all those who helped and those whosupported the occasion.

Two weddings have recently takenplace in St. Margaret's Church, the sunshining (just!) for both occasions – on5 July between Thomas Sleigh andAntonia Hughes and on 12 July betweenJamie Rudkin and Sally Broadberry. Wesend our best wishes to both couplesand pray for God's blessing on theirmarried lives together.

We also send congratulations and bestwishes to David Wotton who celebratedhis 90th birthday on 12 July.

She was then presented withflowers by Tilly and Ruby Lane. A largevariety of colourful stalls andsideshows; with games for the childrenwere available for all to enjoy. Thisyear's addition of a Teepee in which thechildren could play, have their facespainted and wear and see thecostumes, dream catchers and rainsticks of Native American Indians wasmuch enjoyed. Thanks to Vince andKaren Webber for lending us thisremarkable tent and putting it up in thepouring rain the day before!

Keep smiling . . .Whilst, visiting his grandparents, asmall boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered

carefully through the old pages.

Suddenly, something fell out.It was an old leaf that had been

pressed flat between the pages.

“Grandma, look what I’ve found”“What have you got there, dear ?”

With astonishment in his voice, the boy answered …

“I think it’s Adam’s underwear !!”
