The Olympics might be over, but the action isn’t with the London 2012 Paralympic Games set to begin Aug. 29.

Two Scarborough residents have already left for a pre-Games wheelchair basketball tournament in Holland and they’ll be en route to London shortly.

Abdi Dini and Adam Lancia (who just recently moved to Nova Scotia from Scarborough) spoke to The Mirror Monday before leaving the country Tuesday.

London will be Lancia’s third Olympics; he previously was part of the gold medal winning team in Athens and silver in Beijing.

“For me, it’s kind of old hat. I still get goosebumps when I think about the opening though,” he said.

Lancia, 32, joined the senior men’s national team in May 2001 and has enjoyed success with it. He said the Paralympic Games are special and it’s hard to describe what it’s like to play on such a scale with thousands of spectators and hundreds of thou-sands more watching at home.

This is Dini’s second Paralympic Games; he was part of the team in Beijing.

“I’m excited. I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of preparation since last summer. Our goal, like any other team, is to make it to the gold medal game.”

The team won a bronze at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Mexico.

“We all feel a certain amount of pressure to perform,” Lancia said.

The team spent three weeks in St. Catharines preparing for the Games.

With the Olympics now over, it adds to the excitement for the Paralympians because they know their turn is next.

“It makes you realize it’s just a couple weeks away,” Dini said.

Lancia wasn’t able to watch much of the coverage, but what he did see

got him excited.“That just intensifies everything,

even just seeing highlights at the end of the day,” he said.

While this may not be his first Paralympics, it might just be the first one where his family will be there to watch. His mother and sister are making a last-ditch effort to raise enough money to go to London to watch him play.

“It would be indescribable. I know a lot of people who’ve had their family there and it gives them such a deep feeling,” Lancia said. “If they were able to come, that would mean the world to me.”

Dini’s family won’t be making the

trip from Canada, but he said he is excited to have an aunt and cousins in London who are slated to come out and watch him compete.

nThe Paralympic Games run Aug. 29 to Sept. 9.

Your VieW

How well do you recycle? Do you ensure every-thing that should go into your green bin makes it in there?

The merits of public and private garbage collection systems in Toronto will continue to be debated. It’s a debate that was renewed last week when the resi-dential portion of the city from Yonge Street to the Humber River officially switched to a private system of collection.

This now means about half of the city – west of Yonge – has privatized collection (Etobicoke has had its residential waste collected privately since before amalgamation).

The remainder of the city continues to have its resi-dential waste collected by city employees.

But let’s think beyond the method of collection. Let’s think about what we, as residents, are doing.

Residents must use this time as an opportunity to embrace better habits when they put out their waste for collection. Are we doing all we can?

Doing all we can means ensuring residential waste is properly diverted into garbage, recycling and green bins.

This may mean taking a bit of sorting time before-hand. Refer to your waste collection calendar or use the Waste Wizard online tool to get more information if you’re unsure about what goes where.

According to figures from the City of Toronto, our recycling has a 20 per cent contamination rate (refer-ring to items that can’t be recycled). Reducing that number is a meaningful and achievable goal.

Ultimately, waste that’s properly sorted before col-lection means more efficient collection. That’s ulti-mately better for the taxpayer. That’s the benefit.

As for the public versus private collection debate, let it continue. Will cost-saving success experienced by this program merit expansion? Will the dire warnings of worsening service be correct? Maybe further adjust-ments to Toronto’s garbage collection system won’t even be deemed necessary.

Regardless of that outcome, there are manageable tasks we as residents can do now.

The first week wasn’t perfect for the new service pro-vider, as reports of delays surfaced.

A core component of elected representation is ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services. Constituents can do their part by ensuring as little of Toronto’s waste as possible goes to landfill.

Easy steps for better waste diversion

Jobs, support neededmore than extra policeTo the editor:

Re: ‘TAVIS makes true con-nection with community,’ Editorial July 27.

There was a major prob-lems with your editorial on TAVIS and increased policing in Toronto: your assumption that more police presence in our neighbourhoods and com-munities equals safer com-munities.

Police get maybe 20 times more money than social or recreational programs, but we haven’t seen a compa-rable increase in the feeling of safety.

Why is it that young people in general, and black people in large numbers, feel less safe when groups of police wander their streets and patrol their backyards?

Could it be that, for black youth, being stopped and “carded” four times as often, being physically or men-tally harassed when doing nothing wrong and being “known to police” in much higher numbers might make people more intimi-dated and fearful of police?

Studies have been done all over North America showing that wherever you have more intensive polic-ing (for example Jane-Finch and Rexdale in Toronto; Newark and Philadelphia in the U.S.), you have more criminal charges and arrests, even though many infractions are minor.

If the white community was “over-protected” that way, we would see more whites before the courts for criminal behaviour.

Jobs, services, supports and more opportunities to participate in society would go a lot further in making our communities safe.

To the editor:Re: ‘Refugee cuts take toll

on local hospitals: doctor,’ News, Aug. 2.

The Scarborough Mirror has performed an impor-tant journalistic function by publishing the story about Dr. Paul Caulford and his compassion for newcomers to Canada.

It is true that there are people in our community who will be hurt, and pos-

sibly harmed, as a result of Bill C-31, passed by the Conservatives in Ottawa.

Your story exposes how our neighbours here in Scarborough are being demeaned as a result of this new legislation.

Once upon a time Canada welcomed people from all over the world. People came here to have a better life. In fact, there is a poster in the Pier 21

Museum in Halifax that says that a Canadian is an immigrant with seniority.

I think that, through their actions, the Conservatives are dem-onstrating that they are people with simple, small hearts.

Thanks to Dr. Caulford for showing us that care and concern for our fellow human beings still exists.

Allan Baker

Conservative cuts harming people in our community

To the editor:At all levels of govern-

ment, the right wing in this country are mounting a concerted effort to demoral-ize working people and their unions simply to please

their friends on Bay Street. It’s not enough they sit

idly by and watch what is left of the middle class erode before their eyes. They are vehement in their ideology to put unfetered control

of the workplace back in the hands of the country’s employers.

It’s true, we are a pas-sive society, however, try stripping away a workers hard-earned wages, pension

Canadians won’t let governments erode hard-earned wagesand benefits and all hell will break loose.

Canadian workers won’t let that happen.

Three year old tied up during home invasion

anDreW PalaMarChUK [email protected]

A toddler was tied up during an armed home invasion in Malvern Sunday.

Police said two men, one armed with a gun, broke into a home near Sheppard Avenue and Neilson Road around 3:25 p.m.

The men tied up three people, including a three year old, and threatened to kill the child if money wasn’t turned over to them.

They fled with jewelry and cash.

The suspects are white and 25 to 35 years old. One is about 6’2” tall with short black hair and a slim build and wore a black base-ball hat and a light grey tracksuit. The other is 5’3” to 5’5” tall and wore a black ski mask.

Anyone with information is asked to call the holdup squad at 416-808-7350 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

n Sexual assault alertPolice have issued a sexual assault alert after a woman was attacked while walking in the Markham Road and Eglinton Avenue area early Monday.

Police said a man approached the woman from behind and put her in a headlock, causing her to fall to the ground, around 12:40 p.m.

“The man attempted to choke the woman with an article of clothing and assaulted her during the struggle,” police said in a news release. “The woman was able to escape the man’s grip and escaped.”

The suspect is white, 50 to 55 years old, 5’10” tall, 190 pounds with a moustache. He wore glasses, a white baseball hat and a blue jean jacket over a white shirt.

For the first time in nearly two decades visitors to the Canadian National Exhibition will once again be able to travel from point A to point B through the sky.

The Sky Ride is a new 1,600 foot long suspended ride that takes people from the Direct Energy Centre to the Better Living Centre, giving them an aerial view of the rides, games, BMO Field, and even Lake Ontario.

David Bednar, general manager, said all annual events such as the CNE exist both in people’s memories, as well as in the present and one of the things people always ask is why the Alpine Way was removed.

“It would be impossible to install a ride of that size and scope today, but we wanted something that would do a similar function so we’ve been talking with our part-ners for years,” he said.

The result is the Sky Ride, which is an easy eight-min-ute glide across the CNE grounds from 42 feet up.

“We’re so full of action here it is kind of nice to get above it all,” Bednar said. “It’s very gentle.”

There’s also a bit of a breeze up there so Sky Ride can give people the chance to catch their breath and cool off a bit between the many games, rides and attractions

Get above it all at the CNEVisitor favourite ‘Apline Way’ reintroduced as Sky Ride

the CNE has on tap. Sky Ride is included in the CNE Ride All Day Pass or riders can get a one-way trip for four coupons and a round trip for seven.

In addition to the rides and games (and food), there are a full slate of shows to keep visitors entertained.

“All the entertainment is included in your admis-sion from Elvis Stojko to Olympians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir to the great line-up at the bandshell and great chefs on the celebrity stage and all the regular stuff you’ve come to expect such as SuperDogs,” said Bednar.

Gold medal winning ice dancers Virtue and Moir will be performing twice daily from Aug. 17 to Sept. 3 in La Vie: Aerial Acrobatics and Ice Skating Show at Ricoh Coliseum; Stojko will per-form Sept. 1 to 3 only.

“The show is really cool because it’s not just skat-ing. We have some acrobats that have been working with Cirque du Soleil and we have some street performers,” said Bednar at a media preview Wednesday morning, Aug. 15.

He advised people to line up early, citing full houses for every show when he per-formed at the CNE in 2009.

Illusionist Ted Outerbridge is bringing his brand of magic to the CNE for the first time. He will have daily

shows on the Variety Stage at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

F L O W R I D E R i s returning with flow boarders who will demonstrate tricks, or you can ride for

an additional cost; and, of course, the always popular Canadian International Air Show returns for its 63rd year at the CNE, soaring over Lake Ontario on Labour Day weekend.

In addition to crowd-pleasing Canadian Forces Sn ow b i rd s a n d s e v e n Canadian Harvards, there will be a new addition to the air show this time around.

“The show stopper this year will be a husband and wife act. He jumps from the plane as a winged batman while she flies around him,” said Colleen Swider, manager of public affairs and media relations with the Canadian International Air Show.

This will be Melissa and Rex Pemberton’s first time performing in Canada. Their performance will also fea-ture Rex’s recovery from the lake by the naval members of H.M.C.S York.

Food is always a big part of the CNE and for those looking for artery clogging indulgences there will be plenty.

“What would a CNE be without fun new things such as deep fried fudge and everything to do with bacon,” Bednar said. “We cannot not have deep fried butter now that we’ve started the tradition.”

There will also be a food truck rally on Aug. 24-26 fea-turing more than 15 food trucks.

The bandshell is set to rock nightly with acts such as Big Sugar, Nick Carter, Trooper, Don McLean, Arkells, and The Tea Party.

wwwheelsheelsheelss c a r b o r o u G h

119,325 printed copies 333,600 readers per issue a toronto community news publication

A few short decades ago, most families got by with sedans and station wagons.

Until recently, most of these vehicles were trucky and bland. Automakers today are more creative, particularly with cross-overs, which often blur the lines between SUV, minivan and wagon. And the Mazda CX-9 – my tester for the week – is among the most stylish of these.

The CX-9 is most striking from the side, where its high and rising beltline is topped by a band of windows that narrows towards the rear. Wide shoulders and a tapered greenhouse, accented by a roof-mounted spoiler give it a more athletic look than you’d expect from a family hauler. Ditto for the large wheel openings over big 20-inch

alloys, and the trapezoidal dual exhausts. From the front, this crossover’s projector

headlamps sweep back like cat’s eyes, either side of the chrome-surround upper grille. But don’t let the CX-9’s low, swoopy pro-fi le fool you, as there’s still plenty of space for both passengers and cargo. Behind the third row – yes, this is a seven-passenger ve-hicle – you’ll fi nd 475 litres of space. That’s more than in many full-size sedans, and there’s even a handy underfl oor tray.

Drop the third row, and you’re left with 1,368 litres. This is the confi guration I used all week – much of it with two kids bicker-ing in the middle row, and the cargo hold jammed fl oor-to-ceiling with camping gear. Drop both the second and third rows, and you have 2,851 litres.

Cargo volume is important, but conve-nience and the accessibility are as critical. All seats fold fl at in the CX-9 quickly and easily. Put-ting everything back in place is a minor effort as well.

Getting into the third row is aided by the CX-9’s tilt-and-slide mechanism, which is a one-handed operation that moves the 60/40 second row forward nearly nine inches. Passengers in the second row get their own HVAC controls, and are treated to loads of knee and head room. Seating is comfortable, and in the GT is embellished with contrasting leather inserts.

The CX-9 is among the pricier offerings in this segment (with a starting MSRP of $36,395), and as such I’d expect a healthy list of standard content. Here, Mazda does not disappoint.

The base front-drive GS gets three-zone climate control, heated front seats (eight-way power adjust for driver), six-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system, Blu-etooth, tilt/telescopic steering with audio and cruise controls, power heated mirrors, and more.

You can add $2,000 for active torque split all-wheel drive and $2,395 for a luxury package that includes power moonroof, leather upholstery, four-way power adjust for the front passenger and power lumbar

support for the driver. The CX-9’s steering, with rpm-sensing

variable power assist, has more road feel than typical in this kind of vehicle.

And the engine – a DOHC 24-valve 3.7-litre V6 (273 hp, 270 lb/ft of torque), mated to a six-speed automatic – packs enough punch to launch it smoothly and quickly, and deliver ample passing power on the highway.

Transport Canada rates this powertrain at a reasonable 12.7/8.4 litres/100 km (city/

hwy) as a front driver and 12.8/9.0 litres/100 km (city/hwy) with AWD. I wouldn’t expect to see these numbers, unless you’re ex-tremely light on the pedal. My own result was a thirstier 13 litres/100 km combined.

Fuel economy aside, the CX-9 is both practical and fun to drive – and handles more like a mid-size sedan than a large crossover. It delivers the kind of nimbleness and ‘zoom zoom’ that Mazda is known for.

AutocAtch.com is the best plAce to find your next vehicle.

General Motors developing wi-fi pedestrian detection technologyGeneral Motors researchers are developing a promising driver assistance feature potentially capable of detecting pedestrians and bicyclists on congested streets or in poor visibility condi-tions before the driver notices them.

The feature relies on Wi-Fi Direct, the peer-to-peer wireless standard that allows devices like some smartphones to communicate directly with each other rather than through a shared access point like a cell phone tower.

GM researchers have determined Wi-Fi Direct can be integrated with other sensor-based ob-ject detection and driver alert systems already available on production vehicles to help detect pedestrians and bicyclists carrying smartphones equipped with Wi-Fi Direct.

The automaker also is looking to develop a complementary app for Wi-Fi Direct-capable

smartphones that can be downloaded by fre-quent road users such as “bike messenger” or “construction worker” that will help Wi-Fi Direct-equipped vehicles identify them.

Wireless pedestrian detection is part of GM’s ongoing development of vehicle-to-infrastruc-ture (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) commu-nication systems that could provide advance warning about hazards such as slowed or stalled vehicles, slippery roads or intersections and stop signs.

By eliminating the intermediate step required to reach a cell phone tower, Wi-Fi Direct allows devices to connect in approximately one second compared to conventional wireless systems that typically need seven or eight seconds to acquire location information and connect.

LEXUS REVEALS THE NEW LSLexus has revealed its new LS model range, comprising the LS 460, LS 600h and, for the first time in its history, an F Sport version of its flag-ship model.

The most obvious changes are to the exterior styling, where the new LS adopts the distinctive Lexus spindle front grille design, but the develop-ment of the model goes much deeper to include improved driving dynamics, better sound insula-tion and more sophisticated and effective preven-tive safety systems.

In all more than 3,000 changes have been made to the current LS, including three world-firsts and 15 “Lexus-first” features and technologies.

The LS’s exterior has undergone a comprehen-sive redesign. In a first for Lexus, all lights - head-lights, rear lamps and fog lights - are available with LED technology. The new shape vertical fog lights include new L-shaped, seamless light tube daytime running lights.

Driving Dynamics

It has also developed the LS’s Adaptive Variable Suspension with a new four-wheel interlock con-trol, which suppresses roll, pitch and heave vibra-

tion at all four wheels simultaneously. Damping re-sponse has been made smoother and more highly controlled to give a flatter, road-hugging ride.

The new LS gains another Lexus first in the form of its Drive Mode Select, offering five switchable driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport S and Sport S+. These provide easy adjustment of ve-hicle systems to help deliver the driver’s preferred balance of economy, comfort, performance and handling characteristics.

Scarboro KIA proudly hosts the Drive Change Event, benefiting Toronto Youth Development (TYD), taking place at 2592 Eglinton Ave E. (at Midland Ave.) from Aug.18-21.

Toronto Youth Development (TYD) is a charitable organization focused on the development of a thriving, sup-portive, healthy and safe community for children and youth through cor-porate, public, & online donations. The mission of Toronto Youth Development is to empower at-risk, inner-city youth, through education, sports and charac-ter development, so that they may go on to lead productive lives and create healthy families.

A portion of all vehicle sales profits

from the 3-day event, plus all proceeds from the BBQ on Saturday, August 18 will be donated to TYD. Special pricing has been arranged for the event which culminates on Kia Canada’s Drive Change Day on Tuesday, August 21.

For more information please visit www.scarborokia.ca , www.torontoy-outh.org, www.drivechangewithkia.ca or call 416-266-0066.

Carmen and Frank Vigliatore, the founding fathers of Scarboro Kia which started in 1976, could not have foreseen the growth that Scarboro KIA is exhibiting.

The small business’ success has relied heavily on providing the best possible customer service, ensuring

a happy clientele that would return the next time they needed repairs - a fundamental building block of the business that remains central to the dealership’s operations today.

The business grew from the ground up. It started out as a sim-ple two car garage and became one of the city’s most successful automotive businesses.

To this day Carmen and Frank have dedicated themselves to the day to day operation of all their dealerships, creating a family atmosphere that will assure you a familiar face greeting you every time you walk through the door.

Scarboro Subaru, Suzuki and Kia continue to be among the top per-forming dealers in Canada, and are continuously looking for ways to offer the very best.

Following extensive renovations in 2007, the dealership offers upgraded service and parts departments as well as a state-of-the-art showroom featuring the brand new Kia Cafe Gourmet coffee. Televisions and wi-fi access are just a few of the comforts designed to further enhance the Kia experience.

The renovations made Scarboro Kia one of the first dealerships to promote the brand’s image program, for instance the signage, colours, and

layout reflect those of select Kia deal-erships across the country.

G e n e ra l M a n a g e r D o m e n i c Vigliatore, known as the ‘Kia King’, believes quality customer service is a crucial element of all departments at Scarboro Kia. His family has a long history of putting customer’s priorities first and is dedicated to overall cus-tomer satisfaction.

The Vigliatores’ experience is paired with the knowledge necessary to run a dealership efficiently and flaw-lessly. The family has worked hard to meet the needs of each and every

Kia customer - from sales to service. After 30 years in business, Carmen and Frank are still seen in the dealer-ships on a daily basis, ensuring their legacy of quality customer service is maintained by the next generation of Vigliatores.

Kia has won three design awards in the Au-tomotive Brand Contest 2012, the latest of a series of honours for the Korean brand’s de-sign team headed by Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer.

The new Kia cee’d – launched in June 2012 – triumphed in the exterior category and also received an honorary special mention for exceptional innovation in the interior category.

In addition, the high profile jury select-ed the Kia GT as the winner of the concept award. The rear-wheel drive sports sedan design study celebrated its world pre-

miere in September 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Automotive Brand Contest, which was held for the first time in 2011, has become an internationally recognized competition. It is open to car manufacturers, automotive parts suppli-ers and companies delivering design and brand communications services to the automotive industry.

This year’s two Kia award winners are key models for the brand. The second generation of the cee’d, Kia’s best-selling model in Europe, features styling typi-

cally found on a sporty coupe, but offers the space and functionality of a five- door hatch.

The Kia GT design study was inspired by 1970s grand tourers, and combines supple, muscular proportions with a sophisticated, elegant four-seat interior. It offers a glimpse into Kia’s future design philosophy.

The Automotive Brand Contest 2012 award presentation ceremony will be held at the Paris Motor Show on Automotive Designers’ Night, 27 September 2012 (first press day).

Buick will make its IntelliLink in-car connectivity avail-able on every 2013 model year vehicle.

And the brand will help owners get acquainted with the advanced technology with real-time over-the-air help.

Designed to be used with two hands on the wheel as often as possible, IntelliLink’s layout was created with an emphasis on minimizing distractions. New features for 2013 integrate more functionality into the system’s voice control commands.

The “More like this” feature uses Gracenote media database technology to identify artist and song titles. For 2013, Gracenote’s album cover art display capabil-ity expands to include genre and artist art.

To speed the use of IntelliLink and keep the driver’s eyes on the road, a new “Quick Info” icon allows access to

popular features, audio info and turn-by-turn navigation. An added “Transfer to Private” icon allows a Blue-

tooth-paired phone call to be moved off the vehicle’s speakerphone.

In addition to upcoming in-car updates, Buick has created a support network for customers who need help familiarizing themselves with new Intel-liLink technology.

Based in Oshawa, Ontario the Customer Care Cen-tre Infotainment Customer Support Team will provide one-on-one guidance for owners.

Dedicated specialists at CCC will be trained to pro-vide customers the quick and thorough support they need. New 2013 Buick models will begin arriving at dealerships later this year.

AutocAtch.com is the best plAce to find your next vehicle.

Over the last several years, homeowners have in-creasingly emphasized clean air in their homes. The growing popularity of home air purifiers suggests today's homeowners want to make certain the environment inside their home is as healthy as possible.

While protecting the environment in a home is important, it's equally as important for motorists to maintain a healthy environment in their vehi-cles. On average we spend roughly 10 to 15 hours per week inside a car, where dust, odors, smoke and other potentially sour smells can make rid-ing in a car rather unpleasant. In addition, air pollution and allergens inside a vehicle can pose a significant health risk to drivers and their pas-sengers. Fortunately, there are several steps driv-ers can take to maintain a healthy environment inside their vehicle.

Improve aIr qualIty

Perhaps the best way drivers can ensure their passengers have a healthy environment while trav-eling in a car is to improve the air quality within the vehicle. An automotive clean air system can quickly and effectively purifies the air inside a vehicle by eliminating harmful gases, dust, pollen, smoke, odors, and bacteria. These systems can be easily placed beneath a seat, in the rear of the vehicle or on a seatback, captures big particles, such as hu-man hair and pet hair

Clean the vehICle's InterIor

Many automobile owners pay particular atten-tion to the appearance of their vehicle's exterior. However, those same drivers don't spend nearly as much time, if any, tending to the vehicle's interior. But a neglected interior doesn't just fall victim to spills and dirt or other particles brought in from the outside. Over time, a neglected interior might begin to grow mildew, which is both unhealthy and unpleasant. In general, clean the vehicle's in-terior once a month to prevent mildew growth and

the buildup of dirt and grime.

Don't fall In love wIth the

"new Car smell" Few consumers can resist the famed "new car

smell." Though enticing, the new car smell is actu-ally an outgassing of toxic chemicals from newly formed plastics, and the chemicals in these gases have been linked to birth defects, impaired learn-ing, liver toxicity, premature births, and early pu-berty in laboratory animals. Though this doesn't mean consumers should avoid buying new cars, it should inspire consumers to address the new car smell immediately. An automobile interior filter easily and effectively remove the harmful gases that stem from the new car smell, while continu-ously removing additional odors as the car ages.

vaCuum Carpets, floor mats anD be-

tween seats Carpets and seating are another collection

point for dirt and pollutants and need to be vacu-umed thoroughly. Make sure to get the floor mats, the floor under the floor mats and all the way un-der the seats. Pound your seats with something large like a baseball bat to loosen and knock out all the dirt and soil that has settled into the creas-es and stitching.

proteCt newer vehICles on hot Days

Hot weather can take its toll on drivers, and it can also wreak havoc on their vehicle's interior. Heat from the sun can cause the vehicle's plastics, vinyl or leather parts to emit volatile organic com-pounds, or VOCs, which can produce both short-term and long-term adverse health effects. When-ever possible, park in the shade or use a sun shade on the windshield. In addition, slightly opening the windows in spring and summer promotes air flow through the cabin, helping reduce the risk of VOC buildup inside the vehicle.

Toronto athletes are competing in their own backyards at the Ontario Summer Games Aug. 16 to 19.

The opening ceremony of the biannual Olympic-style competition, which features 28 sports at venues across Toronto and surrounding regions, is at 7 p.m. today at Varsity Stadium.

About 2,500 athletes from across the province will be competing in sports from rugby and sailing to

fencing and softball. Eighteen sports are being held at 19 venues across Toronto.

Canoe/kayak is being held in Welland, cycling will take place in Albion Hills, skeet shooting is being held in Oshawa, sporting rifle will take place in St. Catharines and the triathlon is in Brampton.

The Games are seen as a gateway to further national and international competition, acting as qualifiers for

most of the sports featured during the event, said Crystal Peiris, a games consultant with Sport Alliance of Ontario, the organization in charge of running the Summer Games for the provincial government.

“The Ontario Games are a stepping stone for athletes to competitions like the nationals and the Canada Games, for example,” Peiris said.

The Games play a vital role in the long-term development of Ontario’s

sports organizations and foster “unmatched” life skills and values that an athlete wouldn’t necessarily pick up in a classroom, Peiris said.

Blair McIntosh, a former direc-tor of Games for Sport Alliance of Ontario and the director of sport for the 2015 Pan American Games, said the provincial Games teach “discipline, socialization, diversity, acknowledgment...it changes an athlete’s life.”

“We have seen many of our ath-letes go from playground to (Olympic) podium and then go on after their athletic careers to accomplish great achievements in life,” said McIntosh.

Tickets are $5 and available at each venue. Tickets give people access to all venues for that day only. Pins are available at each venue for $25, which give holders access to all venues for the entire competition days.

RAHUL GUPTA @TOinTransit

It’s been tough, but music mapmaker Meagan Perry has managed not to judge TTC subway riders by the contents of their iPods.

Perry is the creator of The Stationary Groove Toronto Subway Playlist Project, an online interactive subway map which allows users to view and download playlists of the most popular songs, station by TTC station, based on Perry’s canvassing of transit commuters.

For 120 hours, the equiva-lent of three full work weeks, the Leslieville resident trav-eled to every subway station on the Bloor-Danforth and Yonge-University-Spadina lines spending up to two hours approaching head-phone-wearing commuters and asking them what they were listening to.

Perry said she resisted the urge to critique the choices of songs – particularly those belonging to a certain Canadian band.

“I couldn’t bring myself to knock someone’s music, not even Nickelback,” said Perry as she recalled her experience.

Si n c e s h e l a u n c h e d StationaryGroove.com in early July, Perry received 250 song suggestions and has already updated the playlist for one subway station, Finch, with plans for more.

To her surprise, the vast majority of people Perry approached were forth-coming about their choices – though somewhat mysti-fied by her interest.

She even drew the interest of TTC employees.

“The drivers on the trains going back and forth were curious about what I was doing. When I told them, they’d just laugh,” she said.

Perry, who is also rabble.ca’s executive director for

podcasts, said she got the idea for The Stationary Groove after returning to Toronto after living in the Yukon for six years.

A native of Bonnyville, Alta., who has also lived in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Whitehorse, Perry says she began thinking about ways she could convey creatively her adopted city’s musical diversity.

She said she noticed certain trends in the music tastes of transit riders – the system-wide popularity of hometown favourite Drake for one – and the potential for commuters in stations outside of the downtown core to prefer non-English songs.

But, Perry said she’d rather focus on the willingness of strangers to share their love of music with her rather than their demographics. And thanks to her experi-ence, she’s found new artists to add to her own personal playlist, like Singapore pop star Stefanie Sun.

Perry said she plans to

do another study in the future to see how music tastes have changed. She also would love to hold a public event for Stationary Groove, perhaps on board a subway car.

“Music is communal and people want to share and know what others are listen-ing to,” she said.

“I definitely think we should have a dance party on a train.”

The Scarborough-based Toronto Thunder will not defend their Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) title in the varsity division.

Playing at home at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough last Saturday, the Thunder, 7-1 in the regular season, were shut out 26-0 by the visiting Myers Riders (6-3).

Myers will go on to play the OVFL championship final this Saturday in Oshawa against the London Mustangs.

The Titans will take on the Ottawa Invaders, last year’s finalist.

Those two teams finished one-two during the regular season – the Titans 8-0 and Ottawa 6-2.

Both won their home semifinal games last Saturday, The Titans 14-11 over Sarnia Imperials (4-4) and Ottawa 15-13 over the defending NFC champion Tri-City Outlaws (5-3).
