Typically, theres a fair amount of information provided on a winelabel, some of which is required by law, such as the name of theproducer, alcohol content and the origin of the grapes. With Cali-fornia-made wines, the geographic origin of the grapes starts withthe broadest designation of all California meaning that 100% of the grapes used to make this wine were grown in California.

After that, grape origin designation breaks down into smaller, butstill relatively large sub-regions, such as Sonoma County, CentralCoast or North Coast. Winemaking geography can be divided intoyet smaller, government-approved areas known as American Viticul-tural Areas. Examples of this would be Napa Valley, Sonoma Valleyor Paso Robles. Typically, the more precise the geographic designa-

tion, the more the wine represents the unique character of that area. Some labels offer even more specific information when it comesto the origin of the grapes, such as when it provides the name of acertain vineyard. Here, the producer is telling you that the grapesgrown from this particular plot of land produces a uniqueness that

deserves special recognition. One of the earliest examples in Cali-fornia wine history of a vineyard-designation is the Cabernet Sauvgnon made by Napa Valleys Heitz Cellars and the Marthas Vineyard designation.

Be aware that usually the only distinction made on the label tthe wine is a single-vineyard wine is by adding the name of thevineyard itself, sometimes in small print. You may think that twowine labels are identical until you look more closely for this vinyard identification. This detail is important to know because, whcomparing wines made by the same producer, a single-vineyardwine can sometimes be more expensive than one that isnt.

A scenic drive down Highway 46, justwest of Paso Robles towards the PacificOcean, leads you to Hunt Cellars. Situatedamidst native oak trees and vineyards, thesetting beckons you inside, where Owner/ Winemaker David Hunt has assembled one of the most impressive selections of wines in thePaso Robles appellation. Davids passion forwinemaking is much like his passion formusic, with both reflecting his dedication increating a masterpiece of symmetry with akeen sense of harmonious balance. Legallyblind, due to a degenerative retinal disorderdiscovered in his youth, his lack of vision hasonly increased his other senses, with anability to discover the most obscure nuancesin his wines. A perfectionist, Hunt does notoverlook any detail in his winemaking. Hegives great care to each detail, such as theblending process. Hunt choses to go the extrastep in compiling his blends in small lots,

blending each by the gallon in his quest toextract the best wine out of each lot of fruit. The result is undeniably a treat, with a burstof fruit and a velvety smooth texture allexpressing intense depth and complexity. The winerys accolades are reflective of thetenacious care given to each wine withscores in the 90s and an impressive collectionof gold medals. The winerys lineup includesa Chardonnay Moonlight Sonata, the Unfor-gettable Merlot, a Petite Sirah, the Cabova-tion Cabernet Sauvignon and an impressiveblend of Syrah, Merlot and Zinfandel fittinglynamed Thriller. Zinfandel enthusiasts willfind a treasure chest of Zins, including the

Crab and Seafood Cakes withRomesco Sauce paired with

2010 Edna Valley Pinot GrisOutdoor dining is always exciting with friends, delicious food andbottles of chilled wine. Whenever I plan a gathering, I always want toimpress my guests but dont want to spend hours in the kitchen. Thisrecipe is a great solution as it is sophisticated in both taste and presen-tation and the romesco sauce can be made the day before which allowsthe flavors to evolve. This dish paired with the 2010 Edna Valley Vine-yard Pinot Gris will surely bring the essence of summer to your table. This recipe is from celebrity chef Joey Altman who says, These spicedup crab and seafood cakes are well served by the crisp acidity andsubtle fresh fruit flavors of the Pinot Gris. While both the cakes and

wine have big, bold flavors, in my opinion, neither gets overpowered.Rather, theyre enhanced by each other.

The 2010 Edna Valley Pinot Gris is crisp and clean with intenseminerality and refreshing acidity showing flavors of peach, greenapple and orange zest, with a bit of violet or rose-petal perfume andlemon zing on the finish. Aging on yeast lees in older French oakbarrels gave the wine lots of volume in the mouth, plus subtle flavorsof cinnamon, clove and caramel. The spicy lingering finish will leavea lasting impression. This wine is a small lot production and is avail-able for purchase exclusively in their tasting room.

Edna Valley Vineyard is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for winetasting, picnics and special events. Here you can sample their finewines including the newly released 2010 Pinot Gris and enjoy thebeautiful views of the surrounding Paragon vineyard and volcanicpeaks. Join the Club Edna Wine Club and become one of theirextended family of wine lovers. You'll enjoy exclusive club events, special offers and discount pricing on all wines and merchandise.Club members receive access to wines sold only at the winery, amember newsletter with recipes developed to complement their winesand complimentary wine tasting for up to three guests when visitingthe winery. J&J Cellars is the culmination of an adventure the Judd familybegan back in 1998. Jim Judd, head of the family and an accom-plished aviator, was flying over his property, which he has owned for35 years, and noticed all the new vines that had been planted in theproperties adjacent to his. Coming from five generations of fruitfarmers, the beautiful sight of the rolling hills trellised in vines sparkedhis interest. When he sat down and discussed it with his family, itignited a passion in all of them to pursue this new venture together.

At J&J Cellars great pride is taken in the estate grown wines madefrom the eclectic variety of grapes they grow. However, they havemade a conscious effort to keep their pricing affordable. Their casesales of Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon have struck a cord withconsumers who appreciate good quality as well as value. The caseshave been flying out the door!
