For perfection of execution, combination and artistry of presentation, the gymnast may earn a score of 10.00.
Each performance is evaluated with reference to expectations of perfect performance.
All deviations from this expectation are deducted.
(International Gymnastics Federation Code of Points for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, 2017-2020)
PERFEKTIONISM – VAD ÄR DET, EGENTLIGEN?
Perfektionistisk Strävan
Höga/extrema/orealistiska mål
Driven, ihärdig
Vill vara perfekt
Perfektionistisk Oro

Gould et al. (2002): “olympians have high levels of adaptive perfectionism”
I think I worked really hard. There were a lot of athletes that might have been more talented than I was, but I think I was more determined. I wanted to do well and I wanted to reach my goals and I wasn't going to let anything stand in my way. (s. 187)
Gould et al., 2002; Sellars et al., 2014; Rees et al., 2016
PERFEKTIONISM & PRESTATION
▪ Jonny Wilkinson, rugby
▪ Victoria Pendleton, cykling
▪ Ronnie O'Sullivan, snooker
▪ Roy Keane, fotboll

Fallstudie: Daria Klimentová
▪ Nyligen pensionerad efter 25 års karriär
▪ 1300 scenframträdanden i ledande roller
▪ Ser (såg) sig själv som perfektionist
▪ Djupintervju: uppfattningar & erfarenheterom perfektionism i förhållande till
▪ Framgång
▪ Välbefinnande

▪ Ser perfektionism som drivkraft bakom sin framgång
▪ 2 andra ballerinor, som hon beskrev som“besatta”: “got further than me and are stronger perfectionists. They get the furthest”.

PERFEKTIONISM ÄR FÖRRÄDISKT!
Nordin-Bates & Abrahamsen, 2016
I was very critical, yes. I would go and like beat myself up. … I would run away. For a few hours, or a few days. I would go home, I would cry, I would hide. Maybe even the next day I would still not be able to rehearse it again. Completely like a nervous breakdown. Feeling like no, I’m feeling like I will never be able to do it, I want to give up. I always want to give up. But then I would slowly put myself together … and go and, like “yes, I can do it.” And I would go and close the door and start practicing.

▪ Medan perfektionistisk strävan iblandpredicerar positiva utfall…
▪ Högt satta mål – jobbar hårt – når långt – mår bra
▪ … så predicerar perfektionistisk oro konsekventnegativa utfall:
▪ Prestationsångest, klinisk ångest, depression
▪ Stress, utbrändhet
▪ Kroppsmissnöje, ätstörningar

Pendleton did not enjoy her Olympic experience. … "I was an emotional wreck beforehand because … I was apprehensive about my ride. I worried that I would be the one person who let down the team.”
“So winning was just a relief. And even that felt like a complete anti-climax. It was very surreal on the podium and as soon as I stepped off it I was, like, 'What on earth am I going to do now?' I found it quite hard to deal with. It was, like, I've got no purpose anymore.“
"I soon worked out that the only thing I could do was to get another gold medal. I need one.”
McRae, the Guardian, 2008

▪ Rigiditet
▪ Tvångsmässigt
▪ Bristande kreativitet
▪ Smalt fokus på sig själv & sin prestation

Wilkinson has said that his obsession with practising these things made his life hell. His perfectionism pushed him into spending 4 hours each day alone doing nothing but practising his goal-kicking.
He did such a volume of work that he “wore through both sides of my groin, wrecked my back and tore muscles up and down my legs”.

It’s crazy, I’m still going to the classes and these little galas, and I don’t have to anymore. But because I said yes to that gala, I am gonna go and do it and I want to be good. … like I don’t want to fail if I said yes already. But I can easily go and say “no” now, you know, it’s like no one’s putting pressure [on me].
And I have a torn Achilles, I have a bursa in my foot, I developed plantar fasciitis now because I never ever stop. I’m doing classes every single day. So yes, you are damaging yourself basically.

▪ Inre motivation (self determination theory)
SLUTORD
TACK FÖR ATT DU LYSSNADE!
... Those who have talent, they will - regardless of whether they go the perfectionist route or the
excellence route - they will get some high-level result. The question is:
How much do they enjoy what they are doing? And how long a career they will have.
And what kind of personality they will get. How far from themselves they will come. Instead of coming close to themselves. ...
You have to be yourself to be able to develop. ... I think you can see it in the end result: they want to
satisfy a teacher or a, a head master, or... They’re not so focused on their own development.
It is always about satisfying somebody else.
