AMHS: Deployment on-going
AMHS (Aeronautical Message Handling System) was specified in ICAO SARPs
(doc. 9880) as a replacement of outdated AFTN/CIDIN
Based on ITU-T X.400 messaging standards
European implementation specified in ICAO EUR/AMHS Manual and AMHS CS
Last 10 years more than 80% of states in Europe purchased AMHS equipment
and performed conformance and interoperability tests
No real worldwide AMHS deployment activities until last year
Today, 20 AMHS international links, 26 states operating AMHS including US,
UK, Germany, Spain, Austria, China, India, Japan, Singapore, Egypt, Brazil,
Argentina, Peru, etc…
 Deployment is on-going worldwide
Ex: AFTN/CIDIN/AMHS network
EUROCONTROL and AMHS
Supported development of ICAO ATN/AMHS SARPs (1994-2002)
Together with 4 other ANSPs developed SPACE Study on AMHS Implementation Planning in 2002
 Developed ECG Gateway (1997-2003)
 Developed AMHS CS (2008-2009)
Developed ATS Messaging Management Manual (EUR doc 21)
Supported development of EUR/AMHS Manual (EUR doc 20)
Developed and implemented AMHS common facilities at EUROCONTROL:
Off-line Network Management Centre (AMC, implemented)
 Directory Services (EDS, being implemented)
 Underlying Transport Network (PENS, implemented)
Security Form (will be implemented probably on EDS)
ATS Messaging Management Centre (AMC)
Deliver off-line network management services in support of the integrated
AFTN/CIDIN/AMHS network on behalf of ICAO EANPG
The only focal point with complete visibility of the entire worldwide
AFTN/CIDIN/AMHS network
Entrusted by ICAO HQ as the global focal point for the management of AMHS
Addresses
Used for generation and distribution of routing tables for each COM centre in the
EUR/NAT Regions on AIRAC cycle basis
Provides implementation support needed during transition from AFTN/CIDIN to
AMHS
Developed and implemented by EUROCONTROL in close cooperation with ICAO
AFSG
Operation, outsourced to EUROCONTROL member states
Service, provided to 45 states in the EUR/NAT Regions free of charge
European Directory Service (EDS)
Specified in ICAO SARPs (doc 9880) based on X.500 Standards
On the request of AFSG, EUROCONTROL developed EDS Operational Concept Document in 2011
In April 2012, the document was accepted by the AFSG and integrated in the EUR/AMHS Manuel
The initial DIB of EDS contains AMHS address management and users capabilities data from AMC
The DIB can easily be extended to include other object classes from different applications including security
Eurocontrol is currently launching a CfT for implementation of Central European Directory Server at EUROCONTROL based on the operational concept
Conclusion
 The meeting is invited to:
Note that AMHS deployment is on-going.
Note that Directory Services are about to be validated
PENS is an enabler for AMHS.
