There are more than 440 golf
courses in Ireland, ranging
from the spectacular links
along the country’s craggy
shoreline, to the most
elegant resort courses with
period residences where
guests may recreate an older,
more relaxed time, to
numerous interesting and
different town and country
courses where the emphasis
is on sociability as well as
the game of golf. The variety
is endless and all this in a
country the size of the State
of Maine.
Tralee
Ireland
Old Head, KinsaleThe Old Head, jutting into the Atlantic, rises
hundreds of feet above high dramatic cliffs;
it is surrounded by the ocean on all sides,
commanding the most spectacular views.
The course is configured as two returning
loops with nine holes along the cliff tops,
providing an exhilarating test of golf for
players of all standards.
TraleeThe original Tralee course was a 9 hole
parkland at Mount Hawk; in 1984 it
relocated to Barrow on Tralee Bay to a
magnificent Arnold Palmer design, his first in
Europe. The course is set on a cliff top with
Mount Brandon and the Kerry Head as
backdrops; the back nine is spectacular.
WatervilleSituated on the tip of the Iveragh Peninsula
that makes up the Ring of Kerry, Waterville
lies along the shores of Ballinskellig Bay. Golf
has been played here since the 1870s when
the Marconi engineers were laying the great
transatlantic telegraph cables and found an
almost natural golf course among the sand
dunes. The recent Fazio “make over” has
made the courses more popular then ever.
Ballybunion OldBallybunion is a small seaside resort on the
southern shore of the Shannon estuary
facing the Atlantic; it has two courses, the
Old dating from 1893 and the Cashen
opened in 1984.
The celebrated golf writer, Herbert Warren
Wind played Ballybunion in 1968 and
reported in the New Yorker that the course
“revealed itself to be nothing less than the
finest seaside course I have ever seen“. A
favorite of Tom Watson, he declared the Old
“the best in the world”. The Old is always
rated among the top 20 courses in the world
by all golf rankings.

DoonbegDoonbeg, Greg Normans’ first
links design, features soaring
sand dunes rising over one
hundred feet above a white
capped shoreline in County Clare. This
magnificent site - a rugged mile and a half
crescent of Atlantic coastline, was first
identified as a potential course in 1892 by
the Scottish Black Watch Regiment – more
than a 100 years later, it is golf at its
unadulterated best.
Killarney Killeen, Mahoney’sPoint & LackabaneThese parkland courses lie along the shores
of Lough Leane, the largest of the Lakes of
Killarney; the original was built in 1893 and
extended to 18 by Sir Guy Campbell in 1939.
Killeen hosted the Irish Open in 1991 &
1992 and the Curtis Cup in 1996. The 18th
at Mahoneys is a par 3 over gorse and
along the lakeshore to a green hedged
by rhododendrons on one side and trees
on the other; it may well be one of the
most photographed golf holes ever.
Lackabane is located on the land side of
the original courses.
LahinchLocated on the rocky coast of Liscannor Bay,
Lahinch dates from 1892; designed by Old
Tom Morris, it was revised in 1928 by Alister
MacKenzie. It contains two great blind holes,
the 475 yard 4th, the Klondyke, where the
approach shot to the green is played over a
30 foot sand dune situated in the middle of
the fairway; the 5th, the Dell, is a 145 yard,
blind par 3, where the green is hidden
between two massive sandhills.
ConnemaraSet in the shadows of the Twelve Pins
mountains and alongside Ballyconneely Bay
outside Clifden, the unofficial capital of
Connemara, this course plays big and reflects
the starkness and beauty of the terrain -
treeless and open to the elements. The back
nine are wonderful with elevated greens
backed by hills and the last two holes are
mighty par 5s.

CarneOnce described as the single most remote
great golf course in Ireland or Britain, Carne
lies among the giant sand dunes overlooking
Blacksod Bay, the legendary Inis Geidhe and
Inis Gluaire islands and dramatic Achill. With
little disturbance to the natural and unspoiled
environment that surrounds it, Carne is
“everything you could ever ask for from
the 1st tee to the 18th green” J Finnegan -
“Emerald Fairways and Foam Flecked Seas.”
EnniscroneFramed by the Ox mountains and Killala Bay,
Enniscrone is an Eddie Hackett design from
the early 70’s. A favorite for numerous Irish
amateur events, the course is one of the
west’s hidden gems. A delightful mix of
dunes, humps, hollows, heavy rough and
excellent greens.
Murvagh, Donegal GCLocated on the shores of Donegal Bay with
the Blue Stack mountains as its backdrop,
Murvagh has multiple tees that allow play
from almost 6000 to over 7300 yards,
making it one of the longest links courses
in Ireland or Britain. An Eddie Hackett
design from the mid 1970s, a barrier of
dense woodlands cuts this rugged, sandy
peninsula off from the rest of the world –
all of it adding up to a beguiling haven of
seaside golf.
Rosses Point, County SligoSituated on Rosses Point, between Drumcliffe
Bay and Sligo Bay inn the heart of Yeats
country with the flat topped Ben Bulbin as a
backdrop, the course was founded in 1894
and revised in 1922 by Harry Colt and John
Alison. When you play Posses Point, make
time to savor Yeats Country; the remains of
the poet are in nearby Drumcliffe cemetery.
Ballyliffin Old & GlashedyThere are two courses at Ballyliffin over-
looking Pollen Bay where the Glashedy
Rock dominates the spectacular views of
mountains and seascape. The Old links
undulates in a myriad of bumps and hollows;
it is unashamedly old fashioned and bristles
with charm, character and curiosity. The
newer Glashedy links is fashioned around
the incredible sand dunes and is destined to
become one of the world’s finest links. An
unusual feature of the Glashedy links are the
revetted (i.e. turf stacked) bunkers - some of
these are monsters.
Enniscrone

Royal PortrushThe fourth oldest club in the
country, Portrush was founded
in 1888. There are two
courses, Dunluce and the Valley. Dunluce is
the championship course and is regarded by
many as the sternest test of links golf in the
world. Max Faulkner won the British Open
here in 1951. The British Seniors Open has
been played here from 1995 to 1999.
RosapennaThere are few golf courses with a more
impressive pedigree than Rosapenna: Old
Tom Morris, James Braid, Harry Vardon,
Harry Colt all have had a hand in shaping the
links. Rosapenna is seaside golf of supreme
naturalness and it requires a complete arsenal
of shots to score well. Bordering Sheephaven
Bay the course is one of Ireland’s best kept
secrets. Rosapenna’s second course, Sandy
Hill, was opened in 2003 and has now
surpassed the original in popularity.
Royal County DownLocated in Newcastle between the Mountains
of Mourne and Dundrum Bay, the course was
built in 1889; the club hired Old Tom Morris
from Scotland to lay out the course at a cost
not to exceed 4 pounds. Harry Vardon
redesigned the course in 1908 and again
in 1919. Since then the club has hosted
numerous championships including the 1968
Curtis Cup and the British Seniors Open in
2000/02. The Walker Cup is scheduled here
in 2007.
Baltray, County LouthCounty Louth is more usually known as
Baltray, the small fishing village on the Boyne
estuary about 35 miles north of Dublin; golf
has been played here since 1892, but it was
the revisions made to he course in the 1930s
by Tom Simpson that make it a great course.
The club hosted the 2004 Nissan Irish Open.

Baltray, County Louth
Druids GlenAlthough relatively young,
Druids Glen hosted the Irish
Open from 1996 – 99 and was
voted European Golf Course of
the Year, 2000. Druids Heath,
the second course, came on
stream in 2003.
Mount JulietSet amid a 1500 acre country estate, this
Nicklaus signature course hosted the Irish
Open on three occasions recently and
the WGC - American Express World
Championship in 2003 & 2004. “Mount
Juliet is such a magnificent setting for a golf
course; I feel proud of the layout and my
work here” – J Nicklaus.
Portmarnock
Ireland
PortmarnockOften reckoned by golf professionals as
the best course on the European Tour,
Portmarnock dates from 1894 and has
hosted more important tournaments than
any other course in the country. Among the
international events were the Canada Cup
(now the World Cup) in 1960, the Walker
Cup in 1991 and numerous Irish Opens.
Portmarnock is fairly flat with heavy rough,
lots of tough bunkers and a wind that can
change course during a round.
The European ClubThe first new links course built on the east
coast of Ireland in the twentieth century,
the European Club opened in 1993; it is
located at Brittas Bay, an hour south of
Dublin. The course has been created from
a superb stretch of sand dunes, Golf
magazine included it in the Top 100 in
the world in 2003.
The K ClubOne of Ireland’s foremost parkland courses,
the K Club will host the Ryder Cup in
September (22/24). Presently it is host to the
European Open each year. Set among twists
and turns of the river Liffey, the course was
designed by Arnold Palmer who reckons that
the back nine are ”for excitement...the best
consecutive holes I’ve ever seen.” The
Smurfit course opened in July 2003 to
great reviews.

The Mountains of MourneIreland Map
All true golfers want, at
some time in their lives, to
play the great courses of
Scotland, the ancestral
home of golf. The image of
Scotland is one of tartan,
bagpipes, highlands and
islands, haggis and golf. It
lives up to its image and
more. The country has 400
golf courses and in visiting
some of these, hopefully
you will find the time to
experience the richness of
Scotland today.
Turnberry
Scotland
Royal TroonFounded in 1878 (designed by Willie Fernie)
and included on the roster for the British
Open in 1923, Troon hosted the 2004 Open;
revamped by James Braid in 1923, Troon is
a true links course with nine holes out and
nine back. The middle six holes are highly
regarded while the 8th, the Postage Stamp,
a 126 yard par 3, played out to sea from an
elevated green to a small green, is perhaps
the best known.
PrestwickPrestwick, the birthplace of the British Open
opened in 1851 with 12 holes and the Open
was played over three rounds of 12; Old Tom
Morris won his four Opens here and his son,
Young Tom, won three of his four victories;
the Open was played 25 times at Prestwick,
the last occasion being 1925 after which the
course was judged as too short and too
confined for spectators.
TurnberryThere are two courses at Turnberry, the Ailsa
and the Kintyre and to play them, a visitor
must be resident at the Turnberry Hotel;
while both courses date from the turn of
the century, Mackenzie Ross undertook the
restoration of the courses after war use in
the 1940s; the Ailsa is on the roster for
hosting the British Open, the first of which
was in 1977, when Tom Watson won.
Western GailesOne of Scotland’s hidden gems, this course
was designed by Willie Parks Sr. and Jr
and opened in 1896. A classical links with
wonderful views of the Ailsa Craig and
Arran. The course has hosted the British
PGA, Scottish Amateur, the Curtis Cup
(1972) and is a qualifying course for the
Open when it is played on the west coast.
Royal Troon

St AndrewsThe Old Course
Some form of golf has been
played here for over 500 years
including 26 British Opens and 8 Walker
Cups. The course is unusual in that it has
only eleven greens, four with one hole each
and seven with two holes! The double greens
are immense, averaging almost a quarter
of an acre each. While appearing flat, the
course plays otherwise with 112 bunkers
(with great names such as Wig, Mrs. Kruger,
Principal’s Nose, Coffin, Grave and Hell) and
many blind shots.
New Course
Opened in 1895, a classic links course, which
uses the natural features of the land to
create a first class golfing challenge. It also
has in the great St Andrews tradition, shared
fairways and even double greens at the 3rd
and 15th holes.
The Jubilee Course
Created on a narrow strip of land between
the New Course and the sea, many
consider it to be the toughest test if golf at
St Andrews. Donald Steel re-designed it in
1988 to championship standard. The teeing
grounds were raised, not only providing
wonderful views of the Links, but also
exposing the golfers to the winds, which
sweep in from the bay.
CarnoustieOriginally, the course consisted of 10 holes
laid out by Allan Robertson; 25 years later it
was extended to 18 by Old Tom Morris and
in 1926, James Braid revised the course to
todays championship status. There are three
courses at Carnoustie, Burnside, Buddon and
the Championship; the British Open returned
to the championship course in 1999. The
Burnside was developed in 1926 by James
Braid and is a first rate links course of
considerable strength. The Open returns
here in 2007.

KingsbarnsThis new and exciting links course was
developed on the site of the original
Kingsbarns Golfing Society nine hole course
that dated from 1815. The course failed
to reopen after being used for military
training during the second world war. The
magnificent coastal site has been used to
create a classic links course that measures
over 7100 yards from the back tees. Now
one of the trio of courses used in the
Dunhill Links.
CrailThe Crail Golfing Society was formed in 1786
making it the 7th oldest club in the world.
Old Tom Morris laid out the original nine
holes at Balcomie in 1895 and in 1998 a
second course, Craighead Links, was opened.
Balcomie is a beautiful links set along the
craggy Fife coastline. Several of the fairways
wind alongside sandy bays and rocky
outcrops. It is accuracy and not length that
matters most at Crail and the short par
threes serve to emphasize that. Plus, if the
wind blows like it only it can on a true
Scottish links then you could be in for a
tough time.
The Torrance Course (St Andrews Bay)Designed by the late Gene Sarazen and
winning Ryder Cup Captain, Sam Torrance, is
a par 72, 7037 yard course that sweeps its
way round the hotel and down to the coastal
edge. The signature hole is the 17th, a
par 4, 452 yards from the championship tee
named ‘Sam’s favorite’. After playing your
way down to the rugged cliff edge the hole
meanders its way back towards the bay,
with the medieval skyline of St Andrews in
the distance.
MuirfieldHome of the Honorable Company of
Edinburgh Golfers and one of the all time
great courses, Muirfield has hosted the
Walker Cup, Ryder and Curtis Cups, an
honor shared only with Royal Birkdale.
It is on the roster for the British Open,
having hosted it 14 times since 1901.
Unaccompanied visitors can play on
Tuesdays and Thursdays only and it is
essential to book a year or so in advance.

North BerwickThere are two courses at North
Berwick; the East (or Burgh)
Links is the lesser of the two
while the West Links is another British
Open qualifier course. It’s most notable holes
are the 14th “Perfection“ and 15, “Redcan”
which may well be the most copied par 3
in the world; Charles MacDonald used
it’s design at the National Golf Links on
Long Island.
GullaneFounded in 1882, Gullane has three 18 hole
links courses; the No 1 course has hosted
the British Ladies, (in 1947 Babe Didrickson
Zaharias became the first American to
win), the Scottish Amateur, the Home
Internationals and it is used as a qualifying
course for the British Open when played at
Muirfield. The Gullane Hill is a major feature
of the course, standing between the opening
holes and the Firth of Forth.
Cruden BayOne of the most awe-inspiring stretches of
linksland in Scotland, where the sandhills rise
over 40 feet, Cruden Bay is one of the 10
best courses in the country. Developed in the
1890s, the course was later redesigned in the
1920s by Tom Simpson in partnership with
Herbert Fowler. Bernard Darwin wrote of
Cruden Bay that “there are burns to cross,
hills to carry and hidden nooks to drop into.
Some of the shots are blind – fully blind if
you like to call it so...but there are some
truly fine golfing holes, on the grand scale.”
Royal DornochOn the southern shore of Sutherland, it is the
most northerly first class course in the world.
Situated in Dornoch, with its cathedral dating
back over 700 years, the club was founded in
1877; ten years later, Old Tom Morris was
commissioned to lay out nine holes; the
second nine was added in 1904. Ranked
among the top courses in the world by all
ratings, it is the birthplace of Donald Ross,
the great course architect in the US.

NairnNairn is a seaside resort on the shores of the
Moray Firth; there are two clubs, the Nairn
Golf Club and the Nairn Dunbar Golf Club;
the former is the more famous and is a
traditional Scottish links. Archie Simpson, the
professional at Royal Aberdeen laid out the
course in 1887 and Old Tom Morris and
James Braid each revised it later. The Walker
Cup was played here in 1999.
Royal AberdeenThis is the sixth oldest golf club in the world
dating from 1780 when the Royal Society of
Golfers at Aberdeen was founded. In 1815
the society became the Aberdeen GC and
in 1903 it received its Royal status. Known
locally as Balgownie, the course is set among
tall sand dunes along the sea with all the

Since the Ryder Cup was
played at Valderrama in
1997, Spain has become
very popular with American
golfers. Most of the premier
courses are in the south on
the famed Costa del Sol.
La Quinta
ValderramaHost to the 1997 Ryder Cup, this is now
home to a number of European PGA
events including the Volvo Masters. A very
tough course.
La CalaFeatures 2 stunning courses designed by
Cabell Robinson in a country club setting;
spectacular hilly landscapes, raised greens
and well positioned water hazards provide
plenty of variety.
La QuintaOverlooks Marbella golf valley; a somewhat
narrow course, it demands accurate
shotmaking.
SotograndeRated among the top 25 courses in Europe,
the course is well established with tree lined
fairways and difficult water hazards.
San RoqueThe Andalucia headquarters for the European
PGA; a long woodland course now regarded
among the best in Europe. The 18th is
among the finest finishing holes in Europe.
MontecastilloA relatively new Jack Nicklaus course hosted
the Volvo Masters.
Santa ClaraDesigned by Enrique Canales and opened in
July 2001, the course features wide fairways
alternating with long par 3s and challenging
drives over water hazards.
TorrequebradaKnown for its wonderful ocean vista, the
course has hosted the Spanish Open; eight
dog-legs provide an unusual feature.
MontemayorThe most extravagant course in the region
and possibly in Spain. Golfers either love
or hate this baroque masterpiece laid
out through rocks, gorges and amidst
wild vegetation in 1989 by the genial
Pepe Gancedo.

Weather: Ireland and Scotland have temperate climates with summer temperatures generally
ranging from 60 to 70 degrees. Showers can occur at any time of the year so bring a rain suit,
a hat and, maybe, a sweater. The best golf weather in Spain and Portugal is from September
through to May.
When to Play: Most links courses remain open year round and are playable; probably the most
enjoyable time to go is when the courses are not too busy and the days are long. April and
October are usually excellent months and are great value as many of the top properties reduce
prices at these times. However, AtlanticGolf will arrange prime times for you whenever you travel.
Air Fares: While AtlanticGolf is a full service tour company and can offer you the most
competitive air fares on the market; most airlines offer great web based fares. Please check with
us to ensure that the flights are synchronized with the land arrangements.
Money: Most hotels, restaurants and stores will accept all major credit cards and most ATMs will
accept American cards; also, most retail businesses will accept and change Travelers Checks.
Land Transportation: AtlanticGolf can provide a wide range of motorcoaches for groups of
different sizes; all our drivers are also guides who will add to your enjoyment of the trip by their
local knowledge. Should you wish, we can also arrange the hire of private aircraft and helicopters
for you.
Sightseeing: AtlanticGolf will provide you with sightseeing suggestions during your trip.
Restaurants: AtlanticGolf will make suggestions for dining at all locations and will be happy to
make reservations for groups.
Caddies and Carts: Caddies are generally available at most courses and AtlanticGolf will reserve
caddies for you. However, as these cannot be guaranteed, it is recommended that you call the
course in advance to reconfirm the availability of the caddies. Payment is directly to the caddies.
Few of the more famous links allow motorized carts; however most of the resort courses have a
limited supply, which should be reserved in advance. Payment is direct to the club.
Spikes/soft spikes: As more and more courses require soft spikes, it is wise to include a pair.
Golf Handicaps: Several of the golf clubs require visitors to have official handicaps; we
recommend that you carry your handicap card with you at all courses.
