Verdant fairways laid out on an arid desertscape like undulating emerald carpets…
Palm trees swaying gently from a cooling sea breeze, fanning manicured greens under
cobalt blue skies…
Pyramids and other iconic landmarks so close you can almost reach out and touch them
as you putt…
Luxury spa hotels to pamper you with a relaxing, post-round massage while you gaze
across white-sand beaches to the azure Red Sea and rose-pink mountains…
This is golf, Egypt-style. An experience without par anywhere else in the world.
Egypt’s golfing heritage goes back to the 19th century; you can still play on three historic
courses first built by the British over 100 years ago, one right at the base of the mighty
Pyramid of Cheops.
But it is a latter-day boom in golf course development and golf tourism which has trans-
formed Egypt into one of the world’s fastest-growing golf destinations.
In just 10 years, it has gone from its original three standard-bearers to almost 20 top-class
golf courses – with many more under construction or planned. The courses are spread
right across the country. You can tee off in the historic hearts of the capital, Cairo,
and Cleopatra’s home city, Alexandria; play on courses which are part of huge,
self-contained leisure complexes in Cairo’s suburbs; swing away on a pristine stretch of the
Mediterranean coast; send a drive soaring towards the Luxor mountains where the pha-
raohs of ancient Egypt were buried; and sink putts on Red Sea Riviera courses from the
Sinai Peninsula to the northern and western Red Sea coasts.
It is golf of the very highest calibre, too. Famous names including Gary Player, Fred Couples
and Karl Litten have already put their stamp on Egypt’s courses. New projects will bear
the hallmarks of such luminaries as Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, Robert Trent Jones Jr,
Jack Nicklaus and five-time Open Championship winner Peter Thompson.
With such a pedigree, it is little wonder Egypt’s golf is no longer a secret. Having won the
prestigious accolade of Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year from world golf tourism
organisation IAGTO in 2006, Egypt’s international reputation for golf has grown rapidly,
as has the number of visiting golfers coming to Egypt.
Isn’t it time you discovered the treasures of Egypt’s golf courses for yourself?
Welcome to the land of pharaohs, fairways and endless sun…

A splash of green encircled by the city
Little more than a pitching wedge from the Mediterranean
and close to Alexandria’s ancient harbour lies one of Egypt’s
most venerable golf clubs. Built by the British in the latter
years of the 19th century as part of a recreational retreat, its
18 holes are today encircled by Egypt’s second city, a tranquil
splash of green amidst the vitality and energy of a city in
perpetual motion.
Traditional English-style layout
The Alexandria Sporting Club course is very much a traditio-
nal English-style layout, albeit with palm trees and year-
round sunshine – luxuries its builders would not have been
used to back home. At less than 6,000 yards, it may lack dis-
tance, but the mature trees, small greens and gaping bun-
kers guarding greens ensure golfers don’t get off too lightly.
Get too close to one of the large trees and you will find your
way to the green totally blocked. The trees also provide wel-
come shade from the sun. The course has four par-3 holes,
ranging from 175 to 210 yards, and four par-4s. There are two
par-5s, the 13th and 14th, the club’s longest at 580 yards.

Each hole has two tee positions. Pick of the holes is the 5th,
a 205-yard par-3 which leaves little room to go left or right
and leaves you with a difficult return shot for your second if
you go beyond the green and find the lurking bunker.
Visiting golfers welcome
Although one of Egypt’s most exclusive institutions,
the Alexandria Sporting Club welcomes visiting golfers. For
anyone spending time in Alexandria, the chance to play golf
on a historic track in a city founded by Alexander the Great
and ruled over by the Ptolemies until Cleopatra took her own
life after her lover, Mark Anthony, was defeated by Roman
emperor Octavian would be too good to pass up. It may be a
pleasant walk in the park, but it will not be a walkover.

The first golf destination on Egypt’s north coast
With its new 18-hole golf course, Porto Marina is the first golf
destination on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. A blend of exe-
cutive course and a championship course, Golf Porto Marina
provides golfers with an excellent walking course that can be
played in three hours or less. The par-62 “Super Executive”
course has three tee locations on each hole and offers a mix
of 10 par-3s and eight par-4s – ideal for beginners and high
handicappers, yet still providing an enjoyable challenge for
better golfers who want to improve their medium and short
games.
Salt-tolerant Paspalum grass is used to conserve fresh water
Laid out on an arid stretch of coastal desert, the course fea-
tures three lakes in its landscaped layout as well as several
bunkers, native desert areas and 750 specially-planted palm
trees. The lakes are now attracting birds and other wildlife. In
an eco-friendly move, Sea Dwarf Paspalum turf grass has
been used on the course to conserve fresh water because
water is at a premium in the harsh desert environment.
Paspalum grass thrives on saline and brackish water and this
variety, which has a smaller leaf to give a faster putting sur-
face and truer roll, is the first to be planted in Egypt.
Floodlit driving range
Practice facilities include a 300-yard floodlit driving range
with 20 bays and seven target greens from 50 to 275 yards.
The golf academy covers all aspects of play from basic fun-
damentals and bunker play to pitching, putting and chipping,
course management and etiquette of the game. A certificate
is awarded at the end of the training course, together with a
photograph with the golf pro. The course is located 5km
from the resort of Porto Marina and its luxury hotel. Water
sports are centred on a 10km lagoon, while the soft sands of
Mediterranean beaches are only a short taxi ride away.

Historic Alexandria
The ancient city of Rosetta, 65km east of Alexandria,is famed for being where the Rosetta Stone was discovered. The Rosetta Stone, now housed in the British Museum, was created in 196BC and written in hieroglyphics, another Egyptian script and classical Greek. It was discovered by the French in 1799 and helped unlock the secrets of the previously undecipherable hieroglyphics. Rosetta became the principle port on Egypt’s northern coast following Alexandria’s decline afterthe Ottoman conquest in the 16th century. It is notedfor the Delta-style Ottoman architecture of its resto-red merchants houses, built with distinctive, mouldedbricks.

Museums and palaces
Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in about 331BC. The Pharos (lighthouse) of Alexandriawas one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the Worldand once stood by the harbour. The 40-metre-highstructure was the tallest on earth, but was destroyedin the Middle Ages. A 15th century fort now stands onits foundations. Among surviving Greek and Romanruins are the Catacombs of Kom al-Shuqafa andEgypt’s only Roman amphitheatre. Famed for theLibrary of Alexandria, the ancient world’s largest, the city is now home to the striking, glass-roofedBibliotheca Alexandrina library, inaugurated in 2003.
Former royal palace Montazah, built by the lastKhedive of Egypt in 1892, is set in gardens used occasionally for concerts and theatre performancesin summer. The former palace of Fatma el-Zahara is now the Royal Jewellery Museum and contains a collection of gems from the 19th century dynasty of Mohamed Ali. While little of ancient Alexandria survives, relics from the period from the 3rd centuryBC to the 7th century AD chronicle the city’s heydayin the Graeco-Roman Museum. The Museum of FineArts contains a collection of architectural pieces, art and sculptures.
The beautiful sands to the west of Alexandria are becoming beach, sun and water sports destina-tions. One-time coastal village El Alamein is now a burgeoning resort destination with luxuryhotels. The scene of a decisive Allied victory in WorldWar II, there is also a war museum and cemetery.Nearby Porto Marina became an upmarket touristresort in 2005 and continues to expand. Marsa Matruh is becoming popular for its soft, white beaches, azure seas and rock formations. The Rommel Museum is here. Siwa Oasis, 300kmsouth of Marsa Matruh in the Sahara, can be visitedon a tour.

The course that started the modern boom
Katameya Heights was the standard bearer for Egypt’s new
wave of golf development when it opened in 1997, 100 years
after the first courses appeared. Laid out on hilly terrain on
the south-eastern outskirts of Cairo with some dramatic ele-
vation changes, it was also the first commercial development
combining golf and real estate in Egypt and immediately set
the benchmark in terms of quality with its Yves Bureau-desi-
gned course, elegant clubhouse, extensive leisure facilities
and well-appointed villas. The Championship Course chal-
lenges all abilities, while the Nine-Hole Course better suits
higher handicap golfers – although tricky bunkers, water and
a 500-yard par-5 hole still provide a test.
Golf on high
The undoubted star of the Championship Course is the
signature hole, the par-5 15th, which provides sweeping
views of Cairo. The landing area for tee shots is 40 metres
below, where the fairway doglegs around a lake for a risk-
laden approach to the bunker-protected green. The hole
forms part of a demanding finish to the course, coming after
the long and difficult par-4 14th and leading into the hardest
of its par-3 holes, a lake and out of bounds to avoid on the
17th and the challenge of the narrow, uphill 18th, on which
pars are rare.
State-of-the-art instruction
Before your round, you can hone your skills with practice
facilities including a 24-bay double-end driving range or get
tuition from PGA professionals at the golf academy. It uses
state-of-the-art video swing analysis, high-speed digital pho-
tography and detailed, on-screen graphics together as part
of a coaching concept aimed at improving scores and
players’ enjoyment of golf. Then after your round, enjoy a
drink or meal in the clubhouse and sample its many facilities.
For families, the dedicated children’s centre is a boon and
includes a nursery.

A green oasis in central Cairo
Set on an island in the middle of the Nile, Egypt’s oldest golf
course is a green oasis right in the heart of Cairo. The Gezira
Sporting Club was established by the British 125 years ago
on 150 acres of botanical gardens on Zamalek Island pre-
viously established for ruler Khedive Ismail. Originally the
golf course was an 18-hole layout inside a horse-racing track
alongside polo fields, and the Gezira Sporting Club was the
focal point for Cairo’s high society for 70 years. When land
was needed for other facilities in the 1960s, the course was
reduced to nine holes, but played as 18 holes with double
greens and tees.
Visiting golfers welcomed
The course makes for a peaceful, serene escape from the
hustle and bustle of Cairo for those who want to play a quick
nine or 18 holes and it welcomes visiting golfers. The luxuriant
shrubs all around this part of the island are a testament to
its horticultural heritage. And while the mature trees on the
course provide a pleasant green frame for the city’s skyline –
dominated by the graceful, slender form of the 190m Cairo
Tower – they can also present you with some challenging
questions if you stray from the centre of the fairways.
Just a short walk from a five-star hotel
Even as a nine-hole course, Gezira is short by today’s stan-
dards, in common with its other venerable siblings in Egypt.
However, it still manages to pack in three holes around or
just over the 500-yard mark, to give six par-5s in an 18-hole
round. The remaining holes consist of two par-4s and four
par-3s. The course may not tax your golfing ability to the
limit, but few capital cities in the world can claim to offer golf
in such delightful settings and in such a central position, yet
just a few minutes’ walk from a five-star hotel, the equally-
historic Cairo Marriott, formerly a royal palace.

A feast of golf amid 2,000 acres
One of the biggest golf resorts in the Middle East, the
Pyramids Golf & Country Club serves up a feast of golf in a
2,000-acre landscape of lush fairways, trees, flowers and
man-made lagoons 30 miles north of Cairo. Three nine-hole
loops form its South, West and East courses, giving 27 holes
of progressively more difficult golf.
Choose from South, West or East courses
The South Course offers a forgiving introduction with its
wide fairways, friendly lakes and broad, undulating greens.
This is your best opportunity for getting pars or birdies on
your scorecard. The West and East nines comprise the
Championship Course. For higher handicap players, the West
Course is better combined with its easier companion, the
South Course. More lakes step the degree of difficulty up a
notch or two and demand greater accuracy of shots. The
East Course presents the toughest challenge. Water comes
into play from the 1st hole, a testing dogleg, while the par-5
7th is crossed by water no less than three times. Add narrow
fairways to the mix, and it becomes a shot-maker’s delight.
Egypt’s biggest floodlit drivingrange
A floodlit, nine-hole executive course is ideal for beginners
or those wanting to sharpen their short game. The training
and practice facilities are among the most comprehensive
you will find anywhere, and include Egypt’s biggest floodlit
driving range, accommodating up to 50 players at a time. A
short game area features two greens and practice bunkers,
and the Pyramids Golf Academy uses the latest “A-Star”
video equipment for detailed swing analysis. The clubhouse
is surrounded by trees and sits on the highest point of the
complex, offering a relaxing environment and panoramic
views. Perfect for unwinding after an energetic round. And if
you stay for a meal, you can choose from Asian, French,
Italian or Lebanese cuisine at Solaimaneyah Golf City, which
also includes a hotel.

Pharaonic touch
From the pyramid-shaped tee markers to miniature obelisks
bearing the yardage information and diagram for each hole,
there is no mistaking where you are playing when you tee off
at Dreamland, just 10 minutes from the Pyramids of Giza.
If you need any further reminder, the Pyramids are visible
from some holes of its newest addition, the nine-hole
Pharoah Course. There is even a pharaonic touch to the
names of holes on the new course, the opening hole natural-
ly being called Ramses the First! Whichever course you choo-
se, the golf is fit for kings and queens.
One of Egypt’s longest courses
The Championship Course is among the longest in Egypt at
over 7,200 yards, and can be played from four sets of tees
not including the championship marks. Karl Litten’s design is
tighter than it appears at first glance. Stands of trees and
large waste sand areas planted with colourful shrubs separa-
te the narrow fairways. More challenges are provided by
mounding and lakes, two of which provide grandstand
finishes to the 9th and 18th holes, directly in front of the
Hilton Pyramids hotel, which has rooms with balconies
overlooking the course. The longest, and arguably the most
scenic, hole is the 580-yard, par-5 6th, which doglegs left
around an encroaching lake.
Indiana Jones-style clubhouse
One of the highlights of the Dreamland resort is its Indiana
Jones-style clubhouse, complete with waterfalls, rocks, brid-
ge with lashed-rope supports and a wooden terrace on stilts
as well as a lounge and restaurant. Teaching is available from
PGA pros at the on-course academy and there is a floodlit
driving range for night use. Dreamland is a destination in its
own right, being part of a 2,000-acre development incorpo-
rating the Dreampark amusement park and other leisure
facilities plus shops and cinemas. The Hilton includes a pool
with a swim-up bar, children’s club and spa. More hotels are
being built alongside.

GOLF CLUB
Golf in the shadow of the Pyramids
Reach out and you almost feel as if you can touch the
Pyramids as they tower above this, one of Egypt’s oldest
courses. Nowhere else are you so close to the very fabric of
the country’s ancient past than playing on the nine holes of
the Mena House course, which is part of the luxury Mena
House Oberoi hotel. First established over a century ago, the
course can be played as 18 holes using the double tees and
double greens on each hole.
Renovation project
Major reconstruction work is expected to start during 2008 to
transform and update the Mena House layout, an institution
more than a golf course. The make-over, co-led by top golf
architect Robert Trent Jones Jr, will take 12-14 months and will
involve reshaping the course, removing some trees and exten-
ding two par-3 holes to par-4s, to take it to a par 70 from its pre-
sent par 68. The new-look course will also feature three lakes,
floodlighting, mounding, a new covering of Paspalum grass and
automated irrigation. A new driving range and pool for hotel
guests’ use are part of the redevelopment project, too.
Cairo’s grand dame
In the meantime, golfers can continue to enjoy an icon chan-
ged little since its early days, soaking up the atmospheric
scenery as they putt or tee off in the shadow of the
Pyramids. They can also dine in the course’s unassuming
clubhouse restaurant while viewing one of the Seven Ancient
Wonders of the World through the windows, the Great
Pyramid of Cheops. There are more amazing views of the
Pyramids from the Mena House Oberoi hotel itself, which sits
in 40 acres of exotic jasmine-scented gardens. Cairo’s grand
dame has played host to kings, emperors, presidents and
celebrities for almost 140 years, a glorious history reflected
in its antique furniture and rich, period décor.
Who can play?Members, hotel residents andnon-residents, tourist groups.
Tuition & practice facilities:Golf pro, individual and grouplessons, floodlit driving range.
The clubhouse:Restaurant and bar, pro shop.
Services:Caddies, trolleys, club rental.
Other facilities:The historic, adjacent MenaHouse hotel has a swimmingpool set in landscapedgardens, tennis courts, joggingtrack, fitness centre, 4restaurants, 4 bars andnightclubs, meeting facilities, and horse and camel riding tothe nearby Pyramids.

Garden of Eden with a water park
Lush fairways, exotic vegetation, serpentine lakes, waterfalls,
ponds and gurgling streams belie the barren desert origin
of this enchanting golf course by Swiss architect Peter
Harradine, on the eastern outskirts of Cairo. If ever a course
could claim to be a Garden of Eden, this must surely be it.
There is even a themed water park boasting Cairo’s only
beach at the five-star JW Marriott Cairo, which overlooks the
first hole.
A sensory experience
Playing the 18-hole Championship Course, augmented since
its opening in 1999 by an executive course, is a sensory expe-
rience. Not only does the course excite your sense of smell
with the different fragrances of its flowers and trees, but it
also harbours many visual delights. For their scenic glory,
choose between the downhill, par-4 8th, with a spectacular
view from the back tee, or the exquisite par-3 12th, a beauty
with bite on which the green is edged on one side by a stone
wall dripping with plants and on the other by a lake, as the
signature hole for the course. But if it’s the challenge presen-
ted by a hole which merits the honour, look no further than
the fiendish par-4 18th, its green perched imperiously on top
of a steep slope which collects half-hearted approach shots
and deposits them in a rock-lined stream at its base.
Palatial clubhouse
The course has four tee positions for regular play, making it
eminently playable by all standards of golfer. Complementing
the golf course is a palatial clubhouse complete with restau-
rant and sports bar, function rooms and a large terrace, as
well as a golf academy with high-tech video training aids.
Mirage City is just 10 minutes from Cairo’s international air-
port at Heliopolis, and free shuttles operate from the JW

ping mall, the City Stars Mall.

Manicured fairways and greensare a delight to play
Not so much a city as a haven for golfers, the beautifully-
manicured, undulating fairways and greens of French archi-
tect Yves Bureau’s design at Golf City, in the eastern suburbs
of Cairo, are a delight to play. The expansive fairways offer a
more inviting prospect than other courses, yet still throw up
plenty of challenges to test even the most accomplished
golfers.
Floodlit driving range and tennis courts
Well-placed hazards await the unwary or wayward golfer. The
course’s signature hole, the par-4 9th, features two lakes
with decorative fountains which need to be negotiated to
safely reach the green. The course is peppered with bunkers
and there are swathes of desert waste areas with palm trees,
cacti and other vegetation. The course has recently been
lengthened by nearly 200 yards. New, deeper fairway bun-
kers with vertical faces have also been added, the par-5 6th
having seen some of the biggest changes. There are four tee
boxes, with the back tees now almost 7,200 yards. Facilities
include a driving range which is floodlit for night use and a
golf academy. Golf City also has three floodlit, clay surface
tennis courts and a tennis pro.
Colonnaded clubhouse
A grand, colonnaded clubhouse with a large terrace over-
looks the 18th green, together with a swimming pool which is
heated in colder months. Inside the clubhouse is a fully-
equipped gym and health club together with function rooms
with a capacity of up to 600 people. An architectural featu-
re is its circular, first-floor gallery and domed ceiling. Casual
dining is available inside or on the terrace on the ground
floor, or you can opt for fine dining in a more elegant atmos-
phere upstairs. Just 10 minutes from Cairo International
Airport, Golf City is a tempting and convenient diversion for
travellers who have a late flight.
The ClubhouseHealth Club
offers a fully-equippedgym, heated swimmingpool, sauna, heatedjacuzzi & Moroccan bath, steam rooms, whirlpoolspa and a choice ofmassage treatments.

Cairo’s ancient past
Dominating the Cairo skyline, the massive Citadel fortress was originally built by Saladin in the 12th cen-tury and looks out across the city’s Islamic Quarter, aUNESCO World Heritage Site. Step inside to see itsmosques, Jewel Palace and museums. Stroll the labyrinthine streets and alleys of the fascinating Khan el-Khalili Bazaar, a lively marketwhere you can haggle for souvenirs or traditionallocal crafts and people watch from a coffee house. A nearby highlight is the beautiful, 1,000-year-old Al-Azhar Mosque, with its graceful minarets and crenelated walls. See it at its best lit up at night.

Discover Cairo’s Coptic history with a visit to theCoptic Museum, set in a garden in the Roman-eraBabylon Fort, several walls of which still survive. Its ornate rooms are decorated with carved screensand painted ceilings and its displays show Coptic art, carvings, textiles and manuscripts from the city’s700-year Christian period. The 3rd or 4th century El-Muallaqa Church is Cairo’s oldest Christian churchand is known as the “Hanging Church” as it is builtover a Roman gate. There are several Coptic churchesin this part of Cairo, the oldest one of the city.
A day trip to Saqqara, 30km south of Cairo, is worthwhile for anyone interested in Egypt’s past. The necropolis for Egypt’s ancient capital, Memphis, it was where the first pharaohs were buried. It is bestknown for its Step Pyramid, Egypt’s oldest pyramidwhich dates from the 3rd Dynasty and was built byImhotep. Saqqara contains another 16 pyramids, invarying degrees of preservation. It is also noted forthe burial chamber Pyramid Texts in the pyramid of 5th Dynasty pharaoh, Unas, and for the well-preserved scenes decorating the walls of the Old Kingdom Tombs.

GOLF CLUB
Pharaohs and fairways
Pharaohs and fairways come together royally in Luxor.
Here, you can play from King Tut tees in the shadow of the
temples and tombs of Egypt’s ancient ruling dynasties at the
Royal Valley Golf Club. Luxor’s year-round sun and mild win-
ters are ideal for golf, and the course serves up golf fit for
kings and queens. Located on Luxor’s East Bank, 13km from its
centre and 8km from the airport, Royal Valley is a course of
two halves. After a front nine of generous fairways, numerous
water hazards and protected greens, the back nine’s rolling
fairways are narrower and feature larger waste areas.
Nubian-style clubhouse
The impressive Nubian-style clubhouse stands at one end of
a long lake shared by the 10th and 18th fairways.
The water provides a formidable obstacle on the finishing,
par-5 hole, eating into the fairway as if giant bites had been
taken out of it. At 560 yards, it is also the longest, although
the honour for the toughest hole goes to the long, par-4 13th,
which measures 450 yards. Another tester is the par-3 6th,
which requires a tee shot over a pond in front of a green
guarded by three bunkers behind.
Evocative reminders of the area’srich past
There are four tee positions on each hole. The King Tut tees
tip the scales at 6,735 yards, while ladies and juniors teeing
up on Nefertity [Nefertiti] play from a friendlier 5,215 yards.
Everywhere you look there are reminders of this area’s rich
past. Even the tee markers are evocative, being miniature
busts of their pharaonic namesakes (the other tee positions
are Ramsis [Ramses] II and Sphinx). Look up, and you can see
the mountains bearing the valleys where the ancient kings
and queens were laid to rest. Playing in such atmospheric
surroundings adds a special element to a round at the Royal
Valley, one that you will remember for a long time.

Easy access, easy golf
Stella di Mare’s motto sums up the golf experience at this
relaxing northern Red Sea resort perfectly: “Easy access,
easy golf.” As the closest Red Sea resort to Cairo, it is rea-
chable by road in just over an hour from the capital. Once on
The Links course, golfers are greeted with wide, rolling fair-
ways which invite you to unleash your driver. Strategically-
placed hazards test the course management skills of every
level of golfer, meaning that all 14 clubs in your golf bag
should need cleaning at the end of the round, but without
being penalised unduly.
Water, water – but not everywhere
Water comes into play on six of the holes, including the lon-
gest and hardest hole, the dogleg par-5 3rd, and the par-4
16th, another dogleg where three inter-connected lakes vir-
tually maroon the fairway to leave two carries over water to
reach the green. Another lake skirting the small green on the
par-4 18th requires both precision and nerve. The water
theme continues with the aqua driving range, part of practi-
ce and training facilities at the club which include the PGA
pro-staffed Stella Di Mare Golf & Country Club’s Golf
Academy. Lessons are available in English, German, Swedish
and Finnish.
The Middle East’s largest thalassotherapy centre
The Golf Hotel overlooks the practice facilities and academy
and is one of three properties forming the Stella Di Mare
Resort. A wide stretch of private, sandy beach lapped by the
crystal-clear Red Sea fronts the three hotels, offering an
array of sport and leisure options. You can flop out on the
beach and do nothing or get as active as you like at the
diving and water sports centres. Or you can enjoy revitalising
natural mud treatments in the shallow waters of the Red Sea
as well as a range of other treatments in the pharaonic-style
Thalasso Palace, the Middle East’s largest thalasso therapy
centre which also offers the latest hydro self-massage
equipment.

The Little Venice of Egypt
Bold architecture, vibrant colours and a golf course laced by
waterways – it can only be El Gouna, a golf destination unli-
ke anywhere else you would have experienced. Just 20
minutes north of the western Red Sea’s gateway resort, near
Hurghada airport, El Gouna is known as the “Little Venice of
Egypt” for its maze of canals, lagoons and bridges.
El Gouna Golf Club lies at its heart: the striking design of the
clubhouse is by Michael Graves with Alfredo Freda designed
the hotel’s hill and marina.
Six sets of tees
The golf is provided by a near-7,000 yard layout engineered
by Gene Bates and Fred Couples, with six sets of tees – three
for men and three for ladies – giving a range of options from
4,750 yards. No less originality was put into its creation, with
splashes of desert and large bunkers contrasting the blue
waters and vivid fairways and greens. The fickle nature of
breezes coming in off the nearby Red Sea add to the challen-
ge and require golfers to continually adapt their game.
Among signature holes are the par-5 4th, played into the
prevailing wind, and the 9th, another par-5 which plays
towards the landmark clubhouse tower and challenges
longer hitters with its narrow landing zone for the second
shot.
An aqua driving range
Tuition is offered by up to four English and German-speaking
pros in winter, two in summer. An aqua driving range accom-
modates up to 30 golfers, and the health and fitness club,
managed by the Steigenberger resort and spa operator
Angsana, offers welcome relief for aching muscles after a
round.
Nine dive centres to choose from
When not golfing, there are nine dive centres to choose from
as well as water sports along the sweeping beaches. Night
options include dining in the clubhouse tower French
Speciality restaurant, taking in a bar or restaurant in the
Mediterranean-style marina, and trying your luck in the
casino downtown.

2008. At 7,500 yards from the championship tees and 7,100
yards from the back tees, the Madinat Makadi course will be
one of the longest course in Egypt. An executive, par-3
course has already opened, offering a short game experien-
ce in about 90 minutes.
Twelve holes overlooking the Red Sea
Spanning nearly 350 acres and designed by Sanford Golf
Design, the championship course – all 18 holes are due to be
operational by autumn after the opening of the first nine
holes in spring – presents a very different prospect and will
feature six tee positions including junior tees giving a distan-
ce of 4,600 yards. Salt-tolerant Seashore Paspalum grass is
being used on fairways with Sea Dwarf Paspalum grass on
the greens, to ensure good playing conditions year-round.
Three artificial lakes linked by cascading falls and a host of
bunkers will contrast mountains and the deep blue waters of
the Red Sea. Twelve of the 18 holes will overlook the Red Sea.
The Madinat Makadi Golf Resort opened in November 2007
with practice and training facilities including an 80-bay
dogleg driving range, golf academy and three complete prac-
tice holes – a par-3, par-4 and a par-5. The clubhouse will be
integrated with a 70-room, five-star boutique hotel and will
feature an haute cuisine restaurant and a bar alongside a
swimming pool.
The Red Sea’s newest resort destination
Madinat Makadi Golf Resort is one of the newest Red Sea
tourist resort destinations and is located 30km south of
Hurghada, positioned between the golf resorts of Soma Bay
further south and El Gouna, to the north of Hurghada. It is
just 25 minutes from Hurghada Airport. Conceived as a com-
plete resort village, Madinat Makadi currently comprises
eight hotels, including one with a full spa. Leisure facilities
are open to guests of all the hotels, and shopping options
include a souk market.
Makadi SerenaSpa
offers 23 treatmentrooms including Adam &Eve suites with secludedjacuzzi gardens, plusmassages, pedicure, manicure, facials, sauna, hammam, herbal bath, scrubs and wraps.

Close to Hurghada city centre
For golfers who want to fit in a little time on the fairways
without impeding on a holiday with the family or partner,
the Steigenberger Al Dau Resort offers the ideal solution.
Situated at the southern end of Hurghada, on its own priva-
te beach, the resort could not be more convenient if you like
having all the facilities of a busy resort city close at hand.
Hurghada’s city centre is just 5km and the airport is even
closer, at 3km distance.
Designed by a top international architect
The Al Dau course is no championship track down which you
can send booming drives. But it doesn’t pretend to be.
It is a nine-hole, par-3 pitch and putt course nestling between
resort accommodation units and a snaking lake on a beach
overlooking the Red Sea. Yet this is not mini-golf or crazy
golf. The course was designed by Swiss architect Peter
Harradine, who has more than 200 courses to his name
around the world and who is designing the prestigious
Emaar Uptown project in Cairo. Al Dau takes its golf serious-
ly, underlined by the fact that it is a member of prestigious
global golf tourism association IAGTO. It even has its own
clubhouse with a restaurant, bar and patio, all with views
over the Red Sea.
Floodlit golf
Eco-friendly Seashore Paspalum grass, which is salt-tolerant
and can be irrigated with brackish water, has been used on
fairways and greens. Sandy waste areas mark the fairway
boundaries and there are six bunkers, while the lake provides
a sinuous hazard throughout the course and requires carries
over it on three holes. Fairways, greens and surrounding
areas have also been contoured. There is a 10-bay aqua
driving range with practice green and two practice nets. The
course is also floodlit, so it can be played day or night
The AlgothermThalasso & Spa
offers a heated salt-waterindoor/outdoor pool,Turkish bath andhammam, saunas, 10 treatment rooms, tealounge, aerobics roomwith classes and a cardiotraining area.

Desert links masterpiece
Described by its designer, legendary South African golfer
and architect Gary Player, as the next Pebble Beach – in refe-
rence to the top West Coast US course – The Cascades cham-
pionship course is a desert links masterpiece right on the
Red Sea. Don’t just take his word for it, though. Take on this
mighty course, the centrepiece of the upscale Soma Bay
resort community 35 minutes from Hurghada, and you will
undoubtedly fall for its charms yourself. Readers of German
magazine Golf Journal certainly agree. In 2007 they ranked
Soma Bay the 5th best course in the world outside Europe.
Dramatic breaking waves
The course carves a verdant figure of eight through arid
desert scrub around the Soma Bay peninsula. Several holes
are set along the top of low cliffs pounded by waves or swell.
Spray sometimes leaps up dramatically as golfers putt on the
green of the signature par-3 5th hole, called “The Pebbles of
Soma” because it requires an accurate drive over the beach
and breaking waves to a green which juts into the sea.
Another par-3, the 14th, is known as “Second Signature” for
its tee shot over desert to a green backed by the Red Sea.
Second course opening in 2009
Undoubtedly the most unusual hole is the par-4 12th,
featuring twin fairways surrounded by desert which pose a
puzzling dilemma when you tee off. A driving range, nine-
hole par-3 course, which includes an island green, and golf
academy complement the course. Among the five hotels in
Soma Bay, two of them open from early 2008, luxury hotel
La Residence des Cascades is surrounded by the course and
houses one of the region’s largest thalasso therapy spas, Les
Thermes Marins des Cascades. One of the latest hotels is a
160-room, moderately-priced diving and surfing lodge, situa-
ted next to the dive centre. A second 18-hole course is due to
open in 2009.
Les ThermesMarins
features thalasso treatments and facilitiesincluding an AquatonicPool, hydrotherapy treat-ments, seaweed wraps, underwater massages, and beauty and wellnesstreatments.

Dive the Red Sea
The vast expanses of desert behind the Red Sea arean action-packed adventure zone just waiting to beexplored. From Hurghada, Makadi Bay, Soma Bay, El Gouna and other resorts you can take half-day or day-trip excursions into the desert to try camel or horse riding, quad biking, sand sailing, take a 4x4desert safari, visit a Bedouin village, smoke a traditio-nal hookah water pipe and have a barbeque dinnerunder the stars after watching the sun go down. It isalso possible to cross the desert to visit Luxor in oneday.

Eastern Desert monasteries
The Red Sea is one of the most spectacular dive locations in the world, and its west coast resorts offera huge choice of sites and experiences. El Gounaalone has well over 30 diving sites including wrecksand coral reefs. It is the closest resort to the celebrated Thistlegorm wreck. Around Hurghada you can find underwater coral gardens and giant gorgonians as well as coral reef islands offshore.Marine life you may encounter on a dive could include huge Napoleon fish, turtles, moray eels, reefsharks, groupers, rainbow wrasse and butterfly fish.
Ain Sukhna is an ideal base from which to explore theEastern Desert and visit its historic monasteries. While not as well-known as St Catherine’s in the Sinai, they are just as fascinating and historically significant.Just 90 minutes from Ain Sukhna, St Anthony’s was founded in 356AD and is the world’s oldest activemonastery. Nearby is St Paul’s Monastery, is thoughtto date back to the 5th century. Both are grand, forti-fied complexes set in the Red Sea mountains nearZa’farana, to the south. A day trip could also include avisit to the Suez Canal.
Take a cruise to one of the Red Sea’s many offshoreislands on a day trip or evening sunset and barbecuecruise. Watch out for dolphins on the way. From Hurghada, boat trips go to islands includingGiftun, a beautiful national park island group and setpassengers down on a secluded, sandy beach tospend the day lazing, swimming and snorkelling. For a more romantic touch, you can board a sailingboat in El Gouna and search out coves and unspoiltislands. From Soma Bay, Tobia Island is a small, sandyisland which is popular for tourist boat trips.

Kaleidoscope of colour
You stand over your final putt, sizing it up when a glint of
colour catches your eye. Lifting your gaze, you see the azure
waters of the Red Sea stretch out before you to distant
mountains now tinged with pink from the setting sun.
Directly behind you, the hunched shoulders of the Sinai
Mountains have turned crimson, while all around the pastel
shades of the stylish resort hotels are dissolving into a kalei-
doscope of colour in the failing light levels. This is Taba
Heights, one of Egypt’s newest courses which has already
carved out quite a name for itself, thanks in part to its dra-
matic setting at the top of the Gulf of Aqaba, looking across
the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel.
It feels more like golf in paradise.
Buggies are complimentary
The John Sanford Design, which fully opened in 2007,
is the central core of the new resort. With five tee positions
to suit all ability levels, it offers lots of target golf for shot-
makers. Approach shots to greens, some heavily defended,
have to be fired over water, bunkers, desert waste areas and
flood canals. Holes clamber up a slope towards the
mountains before dropping back to the sea, the 17th green
and 18th tee nestling close to the water’s edge. Because of
the elevation changes, walking is not allowed. Buggies are
mandatory and are included in the green fee. The hardest
hole on the course, the 620-yard, par-5 14th, is also its lon-
gest – and one of the longest in Egypt.
Contemporary architectural styling
Developed by Orascom Hotels & Development, the same
company behind El Gouna, Taba Heights’ five upscale hotels
display similar off-beat, contemporary architectural styling
as those of its sister resort El Gouna. They offer a wide range
of leisure and recreation facilities including spas, and the
resort also has a 5km beach and a marina, resort-wide
transportation, dine-around, 5-star water sports and diving
centre.

First course on the Red SeaRiviera
Barely a decade ago, The Maritim Jolie Ville course opened
on the outskirts of Sharm el-Sheikh to become the first golf
facility on Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera. It has since been followed
by a host of other courses with more in the pipeline. In its 10
years the Maritim Jolie Ville has made its presence felt
internationally. It hosted a European Challenge Tour-
sanctioned event, the Al Ahram-Maritim Jolie Ville Sharm el-
Sheikh Challenge, in 2004 and followed it up the next year
by hosting the Maritim Jolie Ville Sharm el-Sheikh Seniors
Open under the auspices of the European Seniors Tour.
18 man-made lakes
That they should have chosen this location at the southern
tip of the Sinai Peninsula is easily understood when you ven-
ture out onto the 6,587-yard course. The rugged Sinai
Mountains provide a memorable backdrop, especially when
they turn rose-pink from late afternoon on. Indeed, the natu-
ral assets of the course make as much of an impression on
you as the layout. Hardly surprising, given that some 5,000
trees and shrubs were planted and 18 man-made lakes, 16 of
them salt water, were created. The greenery is maturing
nicely now and, together with the abundant water, the vege-
tation has helped to attract many birds. Of 15 migrating bird
species now found on the course, nine are listed as endange-
red.
Egypt’s biggest water theme park
The Maritim Jolie Ville accommodates golfers from beginner
to pro, and features four tee positions for players to choose
from. The water hazards come into play on a number of the
holes, including on the most challenging hole, the dogleg
par-4 12th, where a lake guards the green for the approach
shot into the prevailing wind. But the course is a delight to
play and never an unfair challenge. For golfers with young
families, the adjacent five-star Maritim Jolie Ville offers
leisure facilities including Egypt’s biggest water theme park.

Diving and water sports
From its days as a haunt for holidaying divers on
a budget, Sharm el-Sheikh has blossomed into a chic
destination with lots of shopping. The most stylish
place to shop is Na’ama Bay’s shopping mall, which
has stores specialising in items including silk and
Egyptian cotton clothing, gold and silver jewellery and
onyx. Try the Sharm el-Sheikh Old Market (actually a
new market in Old Sharm), where you can buy every-
thing from local handcrafts such as handmade rugs
to perfumes, herbs and spices.

History and nature
Sharm el-Sheikh was Egypt’s first diving resort and continues to be popular for its clear waters andcoral-festooned reefs. Key attractions include theworld-famous Ras Mohammed National Park, off theSinai Peninsula tip, and nearby Nabq National Park –rated among the world’s best by Jacques Cousteau.Boat excursions to more distant reefs and wrecks arealso popular. Taba Heights also offers excellent divingand snorkelling, notably at Pharaoh’s Island. The Red Sea is now a major centre for windsurfingand kite surfing because of the strong and reliableoff-shore sea breezes.
Excursions to historic St Catherine’s Monastery and Mount Sinai operate from both Taba Heights and Sharm el-Sheikh. A favourite option is to climb at night to witness dawn from the top of the mountain, where Moses was given the Ten Commandments, thendescend to visit the monastery, built in the 6th centuryaround a chapel housing the biblical Burning Bush.Among natural attractions is the mountainous AbuGalum natural reserve, between Taba and Sharm, where wildlife includes Nubian ibex, hyrax and stripedhyena. Other natural wonders in the Sinai include thebrightly-hued sandstone formations of the ColouredCanyon, the White Canyon and several oases.
The Sinai is home to many Bedouin people, and visitsto their camps where you can take tea or coffee or enjoy a meal under the stars are among the mostpopular trips available from Sharm el-Sheikh andTaba Heights. Excursions and longer tours lastingseveral days can also be undertaken which includevisits to Bedouin settlements for camel treks or hikesthrough scenic canyons. Overnight accommodation isin Bedouin tents. For more thrills, go on a dune-bashing trip in a four-wheeled-drive vehicle or takethe controls of a quad bike to race across the Sinai’sdesert dunes.

THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT
Egypt’s love affair with golf continues to
spur growth, with plans for more courses
from the Mediterranean to Cairo and the
Red Sea. Planned new Cairo courses include
a signature 27-hole Nick Faldo design at new
development Katameya Dunes to fully open
by winter 2009/10 and courses by Greg
Norman and Nicklaus Design, the design
company of golfing legend Jack Nicklaus.
Dubai property company Emaar is construc-
ting a Peter Harradine course at its huge
$2.1 billion Uptown Cairo project, while its
$1.74 billion, 2,500-acre Marassi tourist
resort on the Mediterranean coast near El
Alamein will have golf plus 3,000 hotel
rooms, a marina, hospital and 5,300 resi-
dential units. Add projects like the two Tim
Lobb courses at New Giza and El Ein, near
Red Sea resort Ain Sukhna, the nearby
Porto Sokhna project, second courses at
Sharm el-Sheikh and El Gouna, and up to
eight courses at new Red Sea resort Sahl
Hasheesh and the future looks very rosy.
