There are more than 440 golf
courses in Ireland, ranging
from spectacular links to
elegant resort courses. The
variety is endless and all this
in a country the size of the
State of Maine.
Tralee
Ireland
DoonbegDoonbeg, Greg Normans’ first links design-
a rugged mile and a half crescent of Atlantic
coastline, was first identified as a potential
course in 1892 by the Scottish Black Watch
Regiment – more than a 100 years later, it is
golf at its unadulterated best.
Ballybunion Old & CashenThe Old dates from 1893 while the Cashen
(designed by Trent Jones Sr) opened in 1984.
The Old is always rated among the top 20
courses in the world by all golf rankings. A
favorite of Tom Watson, he declared the Old
“the best in the world”.
LahinchLahinch dates from 1892; designed by Old
Tom Morris, it was revised in 1928 by Alister
MacKenzie. It contains two great blind holes,
the Klondyke and the Dell,.
WatervilleGolf has been played here since the 1870s
when the Marconi engineers were laying the
great transatlantic telegraph cables and
found an almost natural golf course among
the sand dunes. The recent Fazio “make
over” has made the courses more popular
then ever.
KillarneyThese three parkland courses lie along the
shores of Lough Leane, the largest of the
Lakes of Killarney. Killeen hosted the Irish
Open in 1991 & 1992 and the Curtis Cup
in 1996.
Old Head, KinsaleThe Old Head, jutting into the Atlantic, rises
hundreds of feet above high dramatic cliffs; it
is surrounded by the ocean on all sides; one
of the most spectacular courses in the world.
TraleeTralee is a magnificent Arnold Palmer design,
his first in Europe. The course is set on a cliff
top with Mount Brandon and the Kerry Head
as backdrops; the back nine is spectacular.
Waterville

ConnemaraLocated alongside Ballyconneely Bay in
Connemara, this course plays big and reflects
the starkness and beauty of the terrain. -
treeless and open to the elements. Great
back nine with two pars 5 s to close.
CarneOnce described as the single most remote
great golf course in Ireland or Britain, Carne
is “everything you could ever ask for from
the 1st tee to the 18th green” J Finnegan _
“Emerald Fairways and Foam Flecked Seas.”
EnniscroneEnniscrone is an Eddie Hackett design from
the early 70’s. A favorite for numerous Irish
amateur events, the course is one of the
west’s hidden gems.
Rosses Point, County SligoThe course was founded in 1894 and revised
in 1922 by Harry Colt and John Alison. When
you play Posses Point, make time to savor
Yeats Country; the remains of the poet are in
nearby Drumcliffe cemetery.
Murvagh, Donegal GCAn Eddie Hackett design from the mid
1970s, located on Donegal Bay, Murvagh
has multiple tees that allow play from almost
6000 to over 7300 yards, making it one of
the longest links courses In Ireland or Britain.
Rosapenna, Old & Sandy HillsThere are few golf courses with a more
impressive pedigree than Rosapenna Old: Old
Tom Morris, James Braid, Harry Vardon, Harry
Colt all have had a hand in shaping the links.
The Sandy Hill course was opened in 2003
and has now surpassed the original in
popularity.
Ballyliffin Old & GlashedyThe Old links, upgraded by Faldo in 2006
undulates in a myriad of bumps and hollows;
it is unashamedly old fashioned and bristles
with charm and character. The newer
Glashedy links is fashioned around the
incredible sand dunes and is destined to
become one of the world’s finest links.

Royal PortrushThe fourth oldest club in the country,
Portrush was founded in 1888 and is
regarded by many as the sternest test of links
golf in the world. Max Faulkner won the
British Open here in 1951.
Royal County DownTthe club hired Old Tom Morris in 1889 to
lay out the course at a cost not to exceed
4 pounds. Harry Vardon redesigned the
course in 1908 and again in 1919. Since then
the club has hosted numerous championships
including the 1968 Curtis Cup, the British
Seniors Open in 2000 /02and the Walker
Cup in 2007.
PortmarnockPortmarnock dates from 1894 and has
hosted more important tournaments than
any other course in the country including
the Canada Cup (now the World Cup) in
1960, the Walker Cup in 1991 and
numerous Irish Opens.
Baltray, County LouthGolf has been played here since 1892, but it
was the revisions made to he course in the
1930s by Tom Simpson that make it a great
course. The club hosted the 2004 Nissan Irish
Open.
The European ClubLocated an hour south of Dublin the
European opened in 1993; it is now included
it in all the the Top 100 rankings in the world.
The K ClubDesigned by Arnold Palmer the K Club
hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006. Presently it
is host to the European Open each year.
Druids GlenAlthough relatively young, Druids Glen
hosted the Irish Open from 1996 - 99 and
was voted European Golf Course of the Year,
2000. Druids Heath, the second course, came
on stream in 2003.

All true golfers want, at
some time in their lives, to
play the great courses of
Scotland, the ancestral home
of golf. The country has 400
golf courses and in visiting
some of these you will
experience the richness of
Scotland today.
Turnberry
Royal TroonFounded in 1878 (designed by Willie Fernie)
and included on the roster for the British
Open in 1923, Troon hosted the 2004 Open;
revamped by James Braid in 1923. The
Postage Stamp, a 126 yard par 3, is perhaps
its signature hole.
PrestwickPrestwick, the birthplace of the British Open
opened in 1851. Old Tom Morris won his
four Opens here and his son, Young Tom,
won three.
TurnberryThere are two courses at Turnberry, the Ailsa
and the Kintyre dating from the turn of the
century, Mackenzie Ross undertook the
restoration of the courses after war use in
the 1940s; the Ailsa is on the roster for
hosting the British Open, the first of which
was in 1977, when Tom Watson won.
Western GailesOne of Scotland’s hidden gems, this course
was designed by Willie Parks Sr. and Jr and
opened in 1896 and has hosted the British
PGA, Scottish Amateur, the Curtis Cup
(1972) and is a qualifying course for the
Open when it is played on the west coast.

St AndrewsThe Old Course
Some form of golf has been played here for
over 500 years including 26 British Opens
and 8 Walker Cups. The course is unusual in
that it has only eleven greens, four with one
hole each and seven with two holes!
New Course
Opened in 1895, a classic links course, which
uses the natural features of the land to
create a first class golfing challenge.
The Jubilee Course
Created on a narrow strip of land between
the New Course and the sea, many
consider it to be the toughest test if golf at
St Andrews. Donald Steel re-designed it in
1988 to championship standard. The teeing
grounds were raised, not only providing
wonderful views of the Links, but also
exposing the golfers to the winds, which
sweep in from the bay.
CarnoustieAllan Robertson, Old Tom Morris and James
Braid all had a hand in today course which
hosted the 2007 Open Championship
KingsbarnsThe magnificent coastal site has been used to
create a classic links course that measures
over 7100 yards from the back tees. Now
one of the trio of courses used in the Dunhill
Links.
MuirfieldMuirfield has hosted the Walker Cup, Ryder
and Curtis Cups and the Open
Championship (14 times since 1901).
North Berwick, West CourseThe West Links is a British Open qualifier
course. It’s most notable holes are the 14th “
Perfection “ and 15, “Redcan” which may
well be the most copied par 3 in the world.

course architect in the US.
Cruden BayDeveloped in the 1890s and always in the
top 100 - Bernard Darwin wrote that ‘there
are burns to cross, hills to carry, and hidden
nooks to drop into. Some of the shots are
blind – fully blind if you like to call it so...but
there are some truly fine golfing holes, on
the grand scale.”
NairnArchie Simpson, the professional at Royal
Aberdeen laid out the course in 1887 and
Old Tom.
Morris and James Braid each revised it later.
