Men’s Athletics

• There are currently 7 men’s sports teams at WMU

• Approximately 150 of the male athletes are on scholarship at WMU

• The men’s basketball team is currently undefeated!

• Approximately 150 of the women athletes are on scholarship at WMU

• In 2003, the women’s soccer team won the MAC championship!

Mascot- School Spirit!

• Buster Bronco has been the mascot at all sporting events since 1988. He is an official member of WMU’s cheer team and can be seen at all sporting events cheering Western on!

• Puck Boy is a legend in Bronco Hockey world. Look for him in the 2nd or 3rd period of every game tossing pucks. Catch a puck, win a free pizza!

Brief Info On WMU Athletics.• The school’s official

colors are Brown and Gold. Black was added in 1998.

• WMU is a part of the MAC conference.

• Our athletics teams are NCAA division I-A

Rivalry

• WMU’s main rival in athletics and academics are the Central Michigan University Chippewa's.

• The rivalry dates back to 1907. The football game between the two schools is something that students from both schools look forward to each school year. http://

The “Bronco” Name

• Western was initially nicknamed The “Hill Toppers” but this was changed because of the confusion with nicknames of other universities.

• In 1939 Assistant Football coach John Gill submitted the nick name Bronco and it is now held in high regard by the students and faculty.

• Bronco is a name that represents power and dignity. This is reflective of many people that are associated with WMU!
