The American Society of Cytopathologyinvites your participation in its monthly teleconference series. These sixty-minute multi-media teleconfer-ences will begin at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time onthe fourth Tuesday of each month (with theexception of December, which is the secondTuesday) beginning April 24, 2007 throughMarch 25, 2008. The teleconferences addressthe broad spectrum of cytology practice.
ObjectivesAt the end of the Cytoteleconference Series, the participants should be able to:
• Identify cytomorphologic characteristicsof neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseasesof the major organ systems includingfemale genital tract, hepato-biliary sys-tem, lung, thyroid gland and lymph node
• Recognize key cytopathologic features ofnormal and disease states in a variety ofclinical specimens including conventionaland liquid-based preparations of exfolia-tive samples (brushings, CSF, serous cavityfluids, urine) and fine needle aspirations
• Discuss current issues in gynecologiccytopathology and legal ramifications
• Identify the role and limitations of newand emerging technologies in clinicalcytopathology, including image analysis, automation, flow cytometry, immunocyto-chemistry and molecular/cytogenetictechniques
• Discuss various types of quality assur-ance programs with a goal of improvingpatient care and meeting federal regula-tion standards
• Educational objectives are provided foreach monthly teleconference
Program InformationHandouts and PowerPointEach hub site will receive a “master” set of writ-ten materials and PowerPoint images in electron-ic format each month. It is the hub site's respon-sibility to copy and distribute written materials toparticipants prior to the teleconference.
April 24, 2007Genitourinary CytopathologyGüliz A. Barkan, M.D.Assistant Professor of PathologyLoyola University School of Medicine
This session will be concentrating on the diag-nosis and pitfalls of genitourinary systemCytopathology. Using interesting cases of urinecytology, renal FNA, and metastatic genitouri-nary system neoplasm FNAs as a springboard, adiscussion will be lead on the salient features ofcommon and uncommon genitourinary lesions,as well as diagnostic pitfalls and differentialdiagnoses.
May 22, 2007 Malignant Mesothelioma inEffusions and Fine NeedleAspiratesArmando C. Filie, M.D.Staff ClinicianNational Cancer Institute
The diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma incytologic specimens can be a challenging task. This teleconference will review the cytologicalfeatures of malignant mesothelioma and its dif-ferential diagnoses in effusions and fine needleaspirates. Utilization of ancillary studies alongwith pertinent clinical information in the diag-nosis of malignant mesothelioma will also bediscussed.
June 26, 2007FNA of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma– Principles of DiagnosisNancy A. Young, M.D.Senior Member and DirectorOutpatient Laboratory, Fox Chase Cancer CenterClinical Professor, Thomas Jefferson University
This course covers the basic morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular features forthe diagnosis and subclassification of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), primarily B cell types,by FNA. Dealing with challenges and pitfallssuch as sampling error, lack of architecture, coexistence of benign cells, absence ofimmunoglobulin expression, and aberrant phe-notypes will be discussed.
July 24, 2007Test Validation in theCytopathology LaboratoryLynnette C. Savaloja, SCT(ASCP)Cytology Technical SupervisorRegions Hospital
This teleconference is an adaptation of a workshopentitled “Extreme Makeover: Cytopathology LabEdition,” which outlines test selection,validation/verification and implementation in thecytopathology lab. For this presentation, we willdiscuss the Food and Drug Administration’s clear-ance levels for testing products and the implica-tions for each of these designations. Regulatorytest validation and verification standards will alsobe reviewed. Finally, lessons learned from imple-mentation, including test ordering options, staff andprovider education result reporting, will be shared.
August 28, 2007Pancreas: AspirationCytopathology of UncommonLesions Syed Z. Ali, M.D.Associate Professor of Pathology and RadiologyAssociate Director, CytopathologyThe Johns Hopkins Hospital
Cytopathologic diagnosis of pancreatic tumorsand pseudo-tumors is often quite challenging. The teleconference will selectively presentuncommon and diagnostically difficult pancreaticlesions that are prone to erroneous cytopatholog-ic interpretation. Emphasis will be placed on theformulation of a differential diagnosis based onkey morphologic characteristics, discussion ofimmunoperoxidase staining profiles and clinicalimplications of an FNA diagnosis.
September 25, 2007Liquid Based Glandular Lesions:A Complex Cytologic ChallengeDonna K. Russell, M.S., CT(ASCP)CMIACSupervisor, Cytopathology Residency TeachingUniversity of Rochester Medical Center
The interpretation of gynecologic liquid basedglandular lesions can be exceptionally challenging.Using illustrative examples of a variety of cases, this session will provide an overview of glandularlesions and common pitfalls in this complex diag-nostic category. Discussion will focus on thosefeatures distinguishing glandular lesions fromcases, which are squamous in origin, a well-knownpitfall in the diagnosis of glandular abnormalities.

October 23, 2007Fine Needle Aspiration ofSelected Soft Tissue LesionsLeslie G. Dodd, M.D.Associate ProfessorDuke University Medical Center
Soft tissue lesions are some of the most difficultto evaluate by cytologic methods but are oftenideal candidates for diagnosis by fine needle aspi-ration because of their accessibility. This telecon-ference will cover some of the more commonlyencountered mesenchymal neoplasms as well ascommon differential diagnostic dilemmas. Use ofancillary studies will be addressed including theapplication of molecular diagnostic testing.
November 27, 2007Hyperchromatic CrowdedGroups in Cervico-VaginalSmearsMomin T. Siddiqui M.D., FIACAssistant ProfessorDirector of Cytopathology and Director ofCytopathology Fellowship Training ProgramDepartment of Pathology and Laboratory MedicineEmory University Hospital
Aziza Nassar, M.D.Assistant ProfessorDepartment of Pathology and Laboratory MedicineEmory University Hospital
Hyperchromatic crowded groups, or three- dimen-sional syncitial-like aggregates, which are crowd-ed clusters of cells with hyperchromatic nuclei incervico-vaginal smears, can be very challenging ingynecologic cytopathology. The differential diag-nosis of some of the benign and neoplastic enti-ties, which present as hyperchromatic crowdedgroups in cervico-vaginal smears, will bereviewed. Ancillary studies and molecular mark-ers, which may be helpful in diagnosing theselesions, will also be briefly discussed.
December 11, 2007Salivary Gland FNA Jeffrey F. Krane, M.D., Ph.D.Associate Professor of PathologyHarvard Medical School andBrigham and Women’s Hospital
This program will review the fine needle aspira-tion findings of the most common salivary glandneoplasms. Potential pitfalls associated with themost challenging differential diagnoses will bediscussed. A practical approach to providing clin-ical pertinent information while avoiding misdiag-nosis will be emphasized.
January 22, 2008Urine Cytology in Comparison toNew Diagnostic Modalities inthe Dectection of BladderCancer M. Katayoon Rezaei, M.D.Assistant Professor of PathologyThe George Washington University Medical Center
Although urine cytology is of tremendous value indetecting the high-grade urothelial carcinomas, thecytologic criteria for diagnosis and monitoring oflow-grade lesions suffer greatly from the lack ofsensitivity. In this presentation, the various ancillarytechniques with the promise of improved accuracyin detecting urothelial carcinomas are discussed.
February 26, 2008Metastases of Unknown Primary Site Tarik M. Elsheikh, M.D.Director of CytologyPA Labs, Ball Memorial Hospital
In addition to establishing a definitive diagnosis ofmetastasis, cytologists are increasingly asked todetermine a potential primary site. This task can beespecially challenging if there is no previous histo-ry of malignancy or prior pathology for comparison. An algorithmic approach to FNA work-up of metas-tases is presented, where malignancies are sub-classified into morphologic categories based onarchitecture, cell size and cytoplasmic quality.Look-alikes and potential pitfalls are emphasized.
March 25, 2008Beyond the Pap Smear:Evaluating Ancillary Tests andPatient Management Kristen A. Atkins, M.D.Assistant Professor of PathologyUniversity of Virgina
The last decade has brought new avenues to theevaluation for and prevention of cervical cancer. Some tests are now standard of care and aid inclinical management. This teleconference looks atancillary testing (e.g. different types of HPV test-ing, p16 immunohistochemistry) and new tech-nologies (e.g. imager systems) and their role inclinical management.
