We can consider the four blocks around the intersection of Baker Street and Ward Street as the heart of the city. By the early 20th century the lots along Baker Street between Hall Street in the east and Falls Street. in the west were mostly built up with commercial buildings. Victoria Street was, with a few exceptions, a dividing line between commercial buildings on the north side and residential houses on the south side, what we now refer to as Uphill.

North of Vernon Street, Lake Street and Front Street were, with the exception of Chinatown, a hodgepodge of mainly industrial factories, merchants’ ware-houses and temporary storage places.

They grouped along the all-important Hall Street corridor down to the CPR rail yard and the steamship landing.

It is in these fringe areas of the city that we find most of the Modernist buildings.

The 100 and 200 blocks of Baker Street were developed in the 1920s. Hendryx Street was transformed from a warehouse district in the 1930s with the building of the Civic Centre, Chrysler Dealership and the Scandinavian Church.
