Primary School Sport & PEThe Link4Life School Sport and PE Programme Manager will arrange a personal meeting with your school to ensure an effective programme is in place which meets your needs.Link4Life will provide a PE and School Sport specialist qualified in a minimum of one Level 2 National Governing Body Sport and a Level 3 in Supporting PE and School Sport. The PE specialist in the first instance will deliver sport and physical activity during curricular and extra-curricular periods as agreed. All PE specialists are vetted through the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) and are trained and experienced with regard to safeguarding and risk assessment procedures.

• Loan Boxes: our very popular Loan Box Service is free to borrowers within the Rochdale Borough. Each box contains original and replica artefacts and is designed to support study topics including history, geography, art and local studies. They encourage learners to use all their senses and help pupils to develop the important skill of drawing conclusions based on an examination of evidence, together with an understanding of the limitations and reliability of evidence. Furthermore, they are ideal for generating group and class discussion.

Arts and Heritage Resource CentreThis is where we keep and care for our Museum, Art Gallery and Local Studies collections. The centre is fully accessible and tours can be organised for small groups to visit. You can also arrange to meet a curator and get help with identifying and researching objects.

GRANNY SU’S HISTORICAL ADVENTURESGranny Su’s historical adventures make learning about the past fun for younger children. During these cross-curricular sessions your students will develop an awareness of the past; identify similarities and differences between the ways of life in different periods whilst improving their thinking and enquiry skills.

Toys Past & Present This lively and fun-packed activity session explores changes within living memory by examining toys and games from the past and present. Everyone will have the opportunity to dress up in period costume as well as play with and discuss the difference between toys, how they work, and the materials from

which they are made. Each child will make a simple toy to take back to school.

Fossils & Bones Do you know what a fossil really is? Do you know how they form and what they tell us about the past? This exciting session is designed to reveal the amazing world beneath our feet and to stimulate children’s interest in pre-historic life and biology through the study of rock layers and fossils. Children will handle real fossils and discover what the plant and animal remains reveal about history, biology and food. By looking closely at the evidence, children will explore the function of skeletons and will compare the foods available for dinosaurs with the present day foods necessary for the healthy growth of humans!

Celebrations: Traditional Victorian ChristmasDates: Available November and December 2016

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert popularised the traditions we associate with Christmas today – the tree, the Christmas cards, the presents and even the Christmas pudding. They made Christmas a festival for the whole family and any gathering was a good excuse to play games together. In this workshop your class will learn traditional parlour games and also play with toys and board games from the period. Each child will dress as a Victorian, sit around our beautifully decorated hearth and tree and make a Christmas card and scented pomander to take away.

During this workshop pupils will learn about washing clothes in Victorian Britain. Dressed in authentic period costume, your students will learn how to do the washing using a dolly tub, rubbing board and carbolic soap. Enjoy the rigours of Victorian life - all good clean fun!

Stone Age Cave Painting & PotteryCost: £65 (1hr 30mins)Dates: Workshops available throughout the yearTime: 10am – 11.30am & 1pm – 2.30pm

It is 12000BC and Britain is beginning to warm after the Ice Age. We will visit the replica cave and discuss what life would have been like for the Neolithic hunter-gathers. Find out how Stone Age artists used the colours of the soils, minerals and other natural materials to produce pictures of the animals and shapes that were important to them - striking images that still survive today to give us a tantalising glimpse into the lives of pre-historic Britain. Finally, each child will use pre-historic techniques to make their own pot like the ones used by early farmers to store food.

Life in the Bronze & Iron AgeCost: £65 (1hr 30mins)

How did living in Britain change from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age? How do we know? Our brand new workshop is a great way to engage children with

prehistory and includes practical art activities too. This workshop is most suitable for pupils who have previously studied the hunter-gatherer societies in the Stone Age. We move forward in time and compare life in the Bronze Age with the farming communities of the Celtic Iron Age focusing on changes in technology, culture and society which the pupils will investigate through problem-solving, object handling and creative art. Activities include; making a Bronze Age wattle and daub panel and an Iron Age weaving card.

Contrast your study of British history with this fascinating cross-curricular workshop exploring Mayan civilisation c. AD 900. Take a trip deep into the rainforests of Central America to explore the ruins and from there embark on a journey that will help your children uncover the life, society and civilisation of the ancient Mayans. Discover more about the Maya’s artistic work as well as their cultural and religious beliefs.

Explore the achievements of one of the earliest civilisations: Ancient Egypt with our costumed facilitator and learn how and why the Egyptians practiced mummification.

Examine accurate replica artefacts, like the infamous ‘brain hook’, natron salt and a set of canopic jars. Learn how amulets protected the body from evil spirits and watch in awe as we ‘mummify’ three daring pupils before making a mini mummy to take away. This is an absolutely brilliant workshop bringing Ancient Egypt topics to life.

The Museum’s Egyptology collection has inspired this truly interactive and memorable experience. The session includes; performance, role-play, music, authentic smells, object handling, movement and dance.

Pupils meet costumed facilitator Annie or Arnold, hot from a recent overseas tour of 1920s Egypt with the great archaeologist Sir William Flinders Petrie.

Children will learn about the treasures unearthed and act out a fascinating Egyptian myth to discover more about life in the past.

Dress in authentic costume and discover what life was like in Ancient Greece. Learn about the achievements of Ancient Greek civilisation including: democracy, architecture and theatre. Act out an ancient myth and take part in a live debate around the price of figs and the sentencing of a prolific criminal who just happens to be an unsuspecting volunteer from your class! This is a fantastic interactive session and the costumed facilitator really helps to bring to life ancient history through lots of role-play.

Dressed in authentic costume children will be divided into four kingdoms and compete in a traditional Anglo Saxon sport. Find out about the importance of storytelling in Anglo Saxon culture and help act out the grizzly legend of Beowulf the Brave.

Discover the gory depths of Anglo Saxon crime and punishment laws, investigate who stole the Saxon cows and debate what punishment they should receive.

Be prepared for some strict discipline! Dressed in authentic waistcoats and pinafores from the period your class will experience the rules and regulation as set by the costumed facilitator to explore a typical school day from the late 1880s. Pupils will follow a timetable based on the 3Rs under the watchful eye of Mr or Miss Grimm, the schoolteacher. This is a realistic theatrical performance based on lessons from the period and designed to help your children understand what life was really like for a child in Victorian England.

a drill session to transform your pupils from slouching school children to model citizens of the Victorian British Empire!

Travel back through the centuries to the time of the Viking raids and invasions! Working with our costumed facilitator pupils will dress up in Viking costume and ‘set sail’ from Norway to England in search of new lands.

Discover why they faced resistance from Alfred the Great, how they lived, what they believed in as well as why and how they travelled. A lively energetic session exploring life as an invading Viking without the sea sickness!

The First World War was a significant turning point in British history. During this interactive workshop your pupils will use role-play to act out the lives of the Lords, an ordinary family who live in Rochdale, from 1914 to 1918. Pupils will learn about: the causes of the First World War; how the Government used propaganda posters to encourage men to enlist; what life was like as a Tommy in the trenches at the front; about the Home Front including the changing role of women; the role animals played in the war and why we commemorate the 11th of November.

A cross-curricular workshop for KS2 focusing on the effects of WWI on the lives of two people from Rochdale. Travel back in time to the First World War and discover the inspirational true story of a local couple from the borough. A time without emails, Facebook and mobile phones - how would you keep the heart of a loved one burning?

Meet local lad Jim Pate, it is the day before his wedding day and he just cannot decide whether or not to marry his wartime sweetheart Gladys Challinor. Jim and Gladys wrote letters, poems and postcards throughout Jim’s time

serving his country as a Lance Corporal in the army. Help Jim through his trials and tribulations to explore the past, commemorate his companions and ultimately

decide whether or not to say, “I do!”

WWI & WWII: Self-Guided Remembrance TrailDiscover Rochdale’s contribution to World War One and World War Two by exploring the wartime displays in the Museum at Touchstones Rochdale. To support your visit we have created a Remembrance themed Museum trail. Why not extend your day by including a visit to the nearby Memorial Gardens to see the War Memorial opposite the Rochdale Town Hall? There is no cost for a self-guided visit and entrance to our building is also free. Please give our team a ring to find out more.

The First World War has started and you need to do your bit for your King, your country and your town... Rochdale! Thisparticipatory workshop follows in the footsteps of local men from the terraced streets to the battlefield. Who will step in line and volunteer to do their bit overseas? How will you feel to leave behind your friends and family? Join our costumed facilitator and prepare to travel back in time, ‘pack up your troubles’ and brave life at the front.

It’s 1914 and Britain is on the brink of war and Rochdale must play its part. Join our costumed facilitator and

explore how the home front supported the war effort. Who will house the new

recruits as they train before going to join the front line? How will

you keep troops entertained before they leave to ‘fight the good fight’? Take part in our fully interactive session and learn all

about a soldier’s life as they prepared for war.

The First World War was a global event which changed the world we live in today. The national call to arms roused local communities up and down the country affecting every corner of Britain. Our WWI Gallipoli Experience Day looks at Rochdale’s experience both on the home front and on the battlefield in Gallipoli, Turkey, where many local men lost their lives. The two complementary workshops allow an in-depth examination of a world eventon local history giving your children a chance to understand why ‘we will remember them’.

Children will learn how rationing affected Christmas celebrations during the Second World War; from the food that people ate, the ways that they cooked it, to the presents that they gave to their loved ones. The class will be split into two teams which will compete against each other to decorate a ‘bomb shelter’ using a traditional ‘goose-feather Christmas tree’, homemade paper

chains created by the children and other festive trimmings. We will then put the decorated shelters to use as the air raid siren warns us of an

impending attack. Each child will also wear a replica gas mask and will learn about the effects of air raids on the people of wartime Britain.

Stop-motion animation is the process of joining together a series of still images into one continuous film. Through this

one-day workshop your pupils will learn how to use basic equipment to storyboard their films, animate drawings and

even record sound effects!

Choose any significant historic event or well-known figure as your inspiration and then decide with the facilitator which key feature to animate. Working in small teams each group will produce a different aspect of the narrative which when viewed together will tell the complete sequence of events.

Behind-the-scenes editing will bring clips together in one DVD animation. Films can then be uploaded to You

Tube to enable you to share your work with other classes, parents and the wider community.

The Rochdale Pioneers opened their store just before Christmas 1844. Pupils will learn about traditions, visit the original store and hear the story of the opening night. They will explore what Christmas was like in 1844 and find out how many of today’s Christmas traditions, like sending cards and pulling crackers, were developed in the 1840s. Working co-operatively, pupils will make a Christmas paperchain to take back to school.

2. Watergrove – The Ghost Village

Step back in time and discover the lost and forgotten village of Watergrove. Using a variety of historical sources learn what lay beneath the cold depths of Watergrove reservoir. Use census information, photographs, maps and trade directories to bring the village back to life.

OUR LOCAL HISTORYThe History of Rochdale in 90 Minutes! (Guided Tour)

Our popular guided walk-and-talk takes your class on a magical history tour to uncover how several aspects of national history are reflected in Rochdale’s town centre. Did you know that Rochdale’s recorded history began in 1086 with an entry in William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book or that St Chad’s Church is built on Anglo-Saxon foundations or that there is a rare example of a medieval bridge in the town centre? This tour includes the chance to see and put into context significant historic buildings found close to the location of the river including the magnificent Town Hall built by our 19th century forebears. Children will also discover through tangible evidence aspects of national history reflected in our local townscape. This 90 minute session also includes a visit to the relevant Museum displays at Touchstones Rochdale to help support and strengthen your children’s learning. The qualified Blue Badge Guide Anne Thomas will impart her enthusiasm and knowledge to leave you truly inspired and proud of our local heritage.

Our Gracie

Gracie Fields is one of Rochdale’s most celebrated actresses and entertainers but what made Gracie and her music so special? Your pupils will explore Gracie’s life from humble beginnings living above a chip shop and working in Rochdale’s mills to life as a film star and famed Dame who entertained troops during WWII. Pupils will also learn about Thomas Edison’s phonograph, a device he invented to record and reproduce sound. A 1930s record player will be used in this session to compare with today’s technology. Pupils will take part in song, dance and a little drama to understand the life of ‘Our Gracie’.

Fairtrade Fun-tastic!

This workshop has at its heart the message about the power of co-operation to effect positive change which is a story that has its roots firmly in Rochdale! What is fair? Who controls trade? What is the story of the cocoa bean? Working with fresh fruit and chocolate your children will put into practice newly acquired business skills to create their own fair-trade teams and take part in dynamic activities guaranteed to create lively debate on fairness and co-operation.

Victorian RochdaleCo-op Workshop

Travel back to 1844 and spend a morning or afternoon actively engaged in learning about a local story that changed the world. Children will take part in a lively role-play session with our facilitator dressed in an authentic costume from the Victorian Era. Children will learn to weigh dry foodstuffs on old fashioned scales and wrap goods the traditional way using strong brown paper.

Hunt for fairies, gnomes, and goblins in Broadfield Park and experience the wonders of the natural world as you learn about woodland ecology and tree identification. Your time with the Professor will culminate with the creation of your very own ‘Goblin Gallery’. Use the ecological knowledge learnt on the day to discuss and draw new goblins using natural materials and, of course, lots of imagination.This workshop combines local heritage, natural sciences, and creative thinking to produce a unique and unmissable experience for children (and their teachers!)

The Hidden Habitats of the River Roch

Through poetry, stories and rhymes Can O’ Worms storytelling will reveal the hidden habitats of the River Roch. In the last 100 years the local river has transformed from little more than an open sewer to a wonderful wildlife haven attracting many different species. Pupils will discover the secrets of the bird life that call the river, in the centre of our town, their home. Along the way, the words discovered and used by the children will be crafted into a memorable poem as durable as the river itself. This workshop will encourage children to imagine what the centre of the town looked like long before the shops, roads and pavements were built providing children with a unique insight into Rochdale in the past.

Wonderful Wildlife

Did you know that peregrine falcons nest right next to Touchstones? Using Rochdale’s wildlife as the starting point your class will explore the whole world of wildlife from worms to whales in stories and poems with Can O’ Worms facilitator, Children’s Librarian Ray Stearn. From these stories children will create a poem to mark the day which they will present to the group. (N.B. The featured workshop has an animal focus but can be tailored to suit your own theme with enough notice given.)

Where Imagination Begins Developed by Can O Worms (from an original idea by Just Poets)

In this popular session help Can O’ Worms explore and discover where imagination begins. Together you will try to beat the world record time for writing a poem about your journey to imagination and back. This session includes; jokes, puns, lost letters, ‘Chinese Whispers’, and lots of fun. This session is a great introduction to poetry which encourages children to use their imaginations.

Prickly as a hedgehog? Quiet as a mouse? Cunning as a fox? With a focus on nocturnal animals, your pupils will soon discover the amazing adaptive powers and survival tactics of a variety of animals. Pupils will take part in a series of challenges, testing their own sensory skills and finding out more about the survival adaptations of different animals before putting this knowledge into action. Pupils will create their own animal - thinking about where it lives, what it eats, who eats it, how it protects itself – illustrating why it has evolved to be so well adapted to its environment.

Rivers & Geography - Flowing with LifeTracing the course of the Roch as it flows through the borough, this workshop shows pupils the importance of rivers within the water cycle and the impact of humans on wetland habitats and their wildlife. A great opportunity to put local environmental issues such as flood risk and pollution into a global context and to help children learn from the past about using the Earth’s natural resources in a more sustainable way in the future.

Equipped with archive maps (and special time travelling powers!), children will discover how Rochdale grew dramatically from a medieval market place to one of the world’s first industrialised towns. Changes in land and water use, transport, living conditions and pollution will reveal what it was like to live here in the past. Returning to Touchstones, the children will create an eco-timeline to record their findings and consider ways of working towards a better and more sustainable future.

Professional puppeteer Vicky Lomax and Sage the pixie puppet bring the highly acclaimed Owl Babies book, by author Martin Waddell, to life in this fun and original cross-curricular Pocket Puppet Theatre performance with a science focus. Sage is confused as to why some animals seem to be active only at night and then disappear during the day. Help Sage to identify different woodland animals, their habitat and which species sleep at night (diurnal) and which are up and about during the day (nocturnal).

In this interactive version of Jack and the Beanstalk professional puppeteer Vicky Lomax and Onion the pixie puppet explore the science of plants in a fun and engaging way. Onion loves to tell the children about different types of plants and their

Billy Goats Gruff & the Story of Rochdale’s Medieval Bridge

In Pocket Puppet Theatre’s re-imagined version of the famous tale the Three Billy Goats Gruff, Gerald the time-travelling troll puppet is lost and can’t find his way back to Rochdale Bridge. In the past there used to be seven old bridges in the centre of town but now all have been covered up by concrete. In this environmental science focused workshop, the children help Gerald to understand how and why the River Roch has changed during the past 200 years and what we can all do to make the river a better place for wildlife and for future generations to enjoy.


SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATHSWe work in partnership with The Greater Manchester STEM Centre to provide primary school pupils with the opportunity to meet practising scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians through the workshops on offer. Using the objects on display in the Museum and Local History Centre archives as inspiration, the activities promise to entertain and engage your children as well as help them develop important problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

1. Energy Through the AgesThis session will compare and contrast our changing energy sources over 2000 years. For centuries mankind used wood and animal fats to keep warm and to cook their food. Rooms were lit by burning candles. There were no AA batteries because there were no electrical items. Water, then coal drove the factories of Rochdale during the Industrial Revolution. To the future and sustainable solutions – solar power, converting sunlight into electricity and wind turbines of Scout Moor harnessing wind power. This session will include; hands-on investigations using Knex solar panels, wind driven model turbines and messy water wheels!

2. Exploration – Journeys to New WorldsThis workshop involves two interwoven themes – migration over the centuries and the complexities of space travel.This session will begin with a time-line discussion to explore young peoples’ appreciation of the many cultures represented in Rochdale. Migrants are people who have left their country or region of birth to live elsewhere. The history of migration to and from the UK is as old as British history itself. Someone who sees themselves as English or British could well have ancestors who were pre-Celtic migrants or belonged to groups collectively described as Celtic. Their ancestors may also include migrants originating from Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Danes, Normans, Flemish and Plantagenets from Anjou. Records from the 17th century onwards to the present day show migration from other countries and continents too. Every family in the UK has a migration story and the archives in the Local History Centre offer many opportunities to look at the contribution that migrants made to life in Rochdale across the centuries. In the 20th century two men went to the Moon and in the 21st century planet Earth is planning to send people to Mars. If we are to colonise Mars, what will be needed to sustain life and flourish?

5. Material WorldMaterials are all around us doing many different jobs in many different ways. Pupils will investigate different examples of materials found on display in the Museum and take part in a number of experiments to compare, identify, mix and separate materials.

Rochdale Town Hall 3. A Magnificent Mathematical MasterpieceThis session explores the numerous mathematical shapes that contribute to Rochdale’s Victorian masterpiece. We will use the Touchstones Rochdale Museum’s Town Hall model to set the scene and spend time exploring and considering the multitude of mathematical shapes that are the building blocks of Rochdale Town Hall. The session will evolve into identifying shapes and constructing nets of 3D shapes. This session will have inputs on imperial measures, pre-decimal currency (bases) and older measurements such as furlongs, pecks and perches, horses are still measured in hands.

4. A Magnitude of Marvellous MaterialsRochdale’s celebrated Town Hall is built from natural materials. It has stood the test of time. The session will begin with a short introduction of the three principal geological rock types – igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. We’ll then go on a walk along The Esplanade and consider what is natural and what is manmade. We’ll compare and contrast natural materials with mankind’s wonderful copies and improvements. The aim is for children to appreciate the differences of natural stone with manmade concrete. On our return to Touchstones we will then consider the similarities between natural rocks, concrete and biscuits in an interesting way!

Inspired by Islamic ArtBe inspired to explore non-European society in our hands-on art session. Working with our facilitator your class will cross the curriculum by investigating early Islamic civilisation through art, maths and religious studies. Where did the Islamic Empire start? Why did Islamic art follow geometric patterns? Enjoy a journey of discovery as your pupils travel through time and continents and create their own work of art inspired by traditional Islamic art.

Tactile Landscape In response to artwork and archive material in the Arts & Heritage collections, the children will find out how to capture a 3D view as 2D and the visual tricks artists use to fool the eye. Pupils will be introduced to the rules of perspective and become familiar with art terms such as the horizon line, foreground, mid ground and background. Children will also understand the difference between - and know how and when to apply - aerial and linear perspective. Each student will apply their learning to create a stunning tactile collage making use of a variety of different materials and art techniques including; colour, texture, line, shape, form and space.

PortraitsExcite the artists in your classroom by taking part in our art, craft and drama workshop designed to inspireand challenge your pupils’ perception of portraits. To begin, children will study paintings from the Art Gallery’s collection. Next, they will use drama and drawing to explore their ideas and record their experiences. By the end of the session your pupils will have developed their knowledge of self-portraits; discovered that there are many different ways to represent figures and understand how portraits capture emotion.

Live Computer Coding - MusicIn this workshop, led by musician Alison Cooper, your pupils’ will learn to code creatively by making and composing music. Children will use basic building blocks of computer code to create a live and active music score using just a laptop and headphones. Short recordings of the pupils’ musical masterpieces will be recorded as a memento of the algorithm compositions created on the day. Music Technology - Creative Composition An introduction to Music Technology - using Music Editing SoftwareThis session provides your pupils with the unique opportunity to create their very own musical composition in just one day and all the technical equipment such as laptops, software and MIDI keyboards will be provided too!Experienced facilitator and musician Alison Cooper offers your pupils the perfect introduction to music

Sculpture: Face, Form, Fantasy

Inspired by the sculpture of world famous artists Alberto Giacometti and Antony Gormley students will study the proportions of the human face and body. Your

class will develop their drawing skills to make observational sketches of the human head and learn sculptural and construction techniques using a variety of

materials including clay & press moulds. Children will consolidate and apply learning to produce a maquette, just like a sculptor would do, of their own unique ‘fantasy’ head.

MEET THE FACILITATORSDr. Oliver Bishop After being awarded his bachelor’s degree in wildlife and practical conservation, Oliver carried on studying at The University of Salford in order to complete his PhD in environmental studies. In the autumn of 2015 he successfully gained his PhD and soon after he set-up and launched a new storytelling and environmental interpretation business – named Yan Tan Tethera. Through Yan Tan Tethera Oliver explores the links between people, heritage, and nature – bringing a little bit of magic back to the natural world through storytelling. Puppets, props, and goblins have become embedded into his everyday life – and he loves it. Outside of storytelling, Oliver also provides project narrative making and also runs a series of successful (and strange) pub quizzes.

Su HudsonSu studied at Manchester Polytechnic in the 1980s and gained a BA (Hons) in 3D Design (wood, ceramics, metal and glass). She completed an in-service P.G.C.E. in the 1990s and has taught art and ceramics to adults and children in various establishments throughout the country ever since. She sells her own sculptural ceramics through art markets, craft shows, ceramic festivals and galleries and is planning to teach ceramics from her own studio in the future.

Daniel JessopSince graduating from Aberystwyth University Daniel has worked in a variety of museums and heritage sites and enjoys bringing the past to life. He has worked for organisations including English Heritage, The Fusilier Museum in Bury and Sheffield Industrial Museum Trust. He is always keen to share his skills of engaging a range of ages to make learning fun and accessible to all.

Alison CooperAlison graduated from De Montfort University, Leicester with a degree in Arts Management and has since worked as a freelance community artist for a number of galleries, museums and community organisations. A keen interest in textiles, craft, heritage, animation and music means she is able to deliver a wide range of mixed and multimedia workshops. Alison works part time for the borough’s Arts & Heritage Service and shares her expert knowledge about the collections through her workshops. As a talented musician, she writes, records and performs her own music as well as through collaborative projects with other musicians. Alison also works directly with schools as a freelancer to deliver bespoke workshops to fit curriculum needs: [email protected]

Cat JessopAfter graduating from the University of Leeds with a degree in Arts Education Cat started her own business as a freelance arts facilitator specialising in devising and delivering visual arts and role-play workshops. Cat has worked extensively in the cultural sector to support the delivery of formal learning using arts and heritage to stimulate and engage children and young people to help them achieve excellence. Cat has delivered workshops for schools with Touchstones Rochdale for several years; she just loves dressing up in period costume! When Cat isn’t dressed-to-impress as a historic character, she creates illustrations for museum guides and publications.

Vicky Lomax (Pocket Puppet Theatre)Since graduating from Central School of Speech and Drama with a BA (Hons) in Puppetry and Costume Design, Vicky has worked throughout the North West of England, in partnership with a wide range of arts organisations, community groups and schools to create tailor made, creative puppetry and visual arts programmes for children and adults of all abilities and backgrounds. She also makes puppets and props for commission and for use with her own performances. Vicky uses puppetry and stories as a tool to educate whilst offering fun, creative experiences for all. She also incorporates literacy and numeracy into the puppetry workshops that she develops for schools, with the use of rhymes, movement and discussion.

Working together with Rochdale Council, NatureEd is based at Hollingworth Lake delivering environmental activities across the borough. Their recent transition into a Community Interest Company means they will be able to bring in more facilitators with new and different expertise. Judy AldersonGraduating from Sheffield University with a BSc (Hons) in Archaeology and Bangor University with a PG diploma in Countryside Management, Judy followed a career in wildlife conservation and countryside management. Working as a Countryside Ranger at Hollingworth since 2002, she continues to work as a ranger part-time alongside being a Director of NatureEd CIC and freelance Level 3 Forest School practitioner in Calderdale.

Jude MurrayA Zoology graduate from Nottingham University and more recently qualified as a Level 3 Forest School Practitioner, Jude began teaching practical conservation skills with BTCV before moving into environmental education as a Countryside Ranger at Hollingworth Lake. A Director of NatureEd CIC, she also works freelance and as a sessional tutor in Oldham.

Ray Stearn (Can O’ Worms Storytelling)Ray Stearn is well known in the borough as the Children’s Librarian. You may not know that he was also a voluntary countryside ranger with Calderdale Council for over 20 years. He is also the person behind Can Of Worms Storytelling. Stepping from under the safety blanket of being the ‘Children’s Librarian’ and becoming a storyteller, Ray felt he was opening a Can O’ Worms and the name stuck. Ray has been telling stories in libraries and schools for children for many years with the aim of encouraging children to enjoy experiencing stories and discover the thrill of reading for enjoyment.

STEM Greater ManchesterTouchstones science sessions are led by staff from SETPOINT Greater Manchester – The Greater Manchester STEM Centre. The organisation is a registered charity (No: 1040251) and has existed for over 20 years: regular presenters are Paul Titchmarsh, Rik Whittaker and David Ward. They have together over 100 years of experience working in schools, universities and businesses. Through their sessions they show their passion and interest in science and engineering using the many industrial and social artefacts from the Museum collection. Each session is linked into aspects of the National Curriculum tailored to the ability of the participants. For each session there is an introduction, an active visit to the display areas and practical hands-on investigations in the Education Studio.

Anne ThomasAnne has been a registered Blue Badge Tourist Guide for the Borough of Rochdale for nearly 30 years. Although born in the borough, Anne moved to the United States where she received her formative education. Prior to her retirement, Anne worked in the Tourist Information Centre in Rochdale for 17 years where she gained an NVQ Level 3 in Customer Service. Anne gives guided walks and talks as part of the advertised Blue Badge Guide programme which she delivers to all age groups on the heritage of Rochdale. Anne particularly enjoys showing off the centre of Rochdale as it’s her very own home town!

Sarah Shaw

After completing a BA (Joint Honours) in French and English Literature at The University of Leeds in 1998, Sarah worked for a Language Learning Consultancy in France for almost 5 years before returning to her home town, Oldham, to work for OMBC’s School Improvement Service. Here she implemented and managed the Aimhigher initiative and coordinated the Gifted and Talented Programme. In 2010, Sarah brought together her dedication to widening participation and her passion for languages to complete an in-service PGCE to become an A Level French Teacher working at a local sixth form college for 6 years. Committed to promoting the value of language learning, Sarah also managed the College’s languages outreach programme for 3 years and during this time delivered French sessions to pupils from year 2 through to year 13. Sarah now runs her own language business designing and delivering French courses for adult learners as well as supporting schools to implement and deliver their languages programme.

Our very popular Loan Box Service is free to borrowers within the Rochdale Borough. We do however charge a nominal fee of £20 for schools from outside the borough. Each box contains original and replica artefacts and is designed to support study topics including history, geography, art, local studies, citizenship and ecology. Each loan is for two weeks and boxes can only be booked one term in advance. As storage for the boxes is limited we try to maximise the number of times any one box can be loaned to meet the demand. We thank everyone for their co-operation in helping us to make this service work for all concerned.

Women Artists: From 1861 to 2015Gallery Two 19 March 2016 – Spring 2017This exhibition presents a selection of art from the borough’s collection, charting and celebrating the Art Gallery’s history of collecting work by women. Drawing on this strength, and tracing the role gender has played in the production of art, the exhibition looks at how the formal and conceptual concerns of female artists have changed from the late 19th century to the present day.

It includes work by Henrietta Ward, Dorothea Sharp, Laura Knight, Gillian Ayres, Lubaina Himid, Maud Sulter, Cornelia Parker, Junko Mori and Hayley Tompkins.

FrocksDresses and Accessories from the Museum Collection

Heritage Gallery 5 Nov 2016 – 15 April 2017Take a look at a century of style from the flappers of the 20s to the swinging 60s.

Dazzling 1920s evening gowns shown alongside Singer sewing machines take centre stage in this exhibition, revealing how fashions have changed over time.

Featuring over 20 outfits from the Museum collection, the exhibition reveals the stories of some of the people who wore them. Highlights include an Ossie Clarke dress and a recently conserved Victorian wedding dress.

Also on display will be a selection of striking accessories including; shoes, jewellery, parasols, handbags and hats.

If you have to cancel your booked session, please telephone the Education Team immediately on 01706 924931 (Tues-Fri).

• From the moment we take your booking we start to incur costs.So if you cancel we unfortunately have to make a charge andthe later the cancellation the greater the cost. We require at leastfour weeks’ notice of a cancellation to enable us to reallocateyour session. If you do not contact us, or we are unable to refillthe session, Touchstones Rochdale reserves the right to charge acancellation fee covering the cost of your booked session. We area not-for-profit organisation and fees charged cover the freelancefacilitator and admin costs incurred. Therefore sufficient noticefrom you will hopefully allow a facilitator to secure alternative workelsewhere. An administration cost of £10 is liable on any othercancellation reported outside of the four week deadline where abooking has already been processed by the finance team.

•In the rare instance that we should ever have to cancel yourworkshop at Touchstones Rochdale on the day the workshop isdue, we promise to refund you in full (including the cost of anycoach you may have pre-booked where the coach company willnot give you a full refund) and we will also offer you a replacementworkshop without charge.

If you have to cancel your booked outreach session, please telephone the Education Team immediately on 01706 924931 (Tues-Fri).

• Schools who cancel outright on the day of the workshop orwithin four weeks of the date of the workshop will be obliged topay the full cost of the workshop.

• Please give as much notice as possible should you wish toreschedule a date – a minimum of four weeks is required.

• Should a freelancer unfortunately not be able to deliver yoursession due to unforeseen circumstances, we will immediatelyorganise an alternative date by mutual agreement. As a gestureof goodwill you will receive a discount of 10% on the cost of yourrescheduled workshop.

• Please note: We reserve the right to cancel a session on arrivalfor health and safety reasons or if the facilitator is prevented bythe school from starting on time causing an excessive delay orif we deem the behaviour of the participants during the sessionto be inappropriate. In the case of such cancellations we will notoffer a refund. N.B. THE TEACHER MUST STAY WITH THE CLASS THROUGHOUT THE SESSION AND IT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAINTAIN DISCIPLINE.

AccessTouchstones Rochdale is fully accessible to people usingwheelchairs with a lift to reach the Galleries on the firstfloor. There is level access throughout the display areas andthe adapted toilet is located in the foyer. There is on-streetparking immediately outside the venue for Blue Badgeholders (alongside the short-stay parking bays).

Self-Guided VisitsThere are no charges for booking a self-guided visit as entryto our building is free. Please note: Booked groups havepriority in display areas. It may be difficult to accommodateyour class if you haven’t booked in advance.

Lunch FacilitiesWe may be able to provide you with space in which to eatyour packed lunch. Please make this request at the time ofbooking so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

Loan BoxesPlease note: You will only be able to book your loan boxone term in advance. Your request remains provisional untilyou have received written confirmation of your booking. Theservice is currently FREE to users in the Rochdale borough(terms and conditions apply). We do however charge anominal fee of £20 for schools from outside the borough. Torequest a box please call 01706 924931.

Planning a Pre-Visit?We recommend that you make a preliminary visit beforebringing the class to familiarise yourself with the displays.We can support you with this process by providing ideas foractivities and further information about exhibitions. (Pleasesee the ‘self-guided visits’ section on page 25).

Risk AssessmentTouchstones Rochdale is a low risk environment andinjuries to visitors are very rare. We can provide you with ageneric risk assessment for self-guided visits and schoolworkshops which take place within our building. However,it is the responsibility of individual teachers and leadersto visit the site in order to conduct risk assessmentsthat are specific to their group and that fulfil their policyrequirements.

cost/paymentUnless otherwise stated all in-house workshops at Touchstones cost £65 and are suitable for a maximum of 30-34 children. Single outreach workshops delivered in school cost £150 (unless otherwise stated). Multiples of outreach sessions, if booked for the same day, are discounted.

Please note: There is an additional travel cost of 50 pence per mile for outreach sessions booked by schools located outside of the borough of Rochdale. (Please contact the Education team to confirm complete price). Your school will be invoiced after the date of your workshop and within the term the session takes place. Full payment is due within the period specified.
