said event was done in prepa-

ration for the 450th birthday of

St. Francis de Sales, which will

take place 3 years from now, on

(Bauan, Batangas) - Matagumpay

na ginanap sa Parokya ng

Immaculada Concepcion sa

bayang ito noong Pebrero 7, 2015

Naniniwala siyang naiitanim ng

magulang ang bokasyon ng

pagpapari sa paulit-ulit na

pagsasabing ‘Itong anak ko, ito’y

magpapari’ sapagkat nangyari sa

kanya.

Aniya pa, “Sa ngayon, ako na

ang pinaka-matandang Pari sa

Arsidiyosesis. Naging estudyante

ko si Msgr. Chavez at Fr. Pepe.

Masayang-masaya kami sa inyong

pagdalaw at ito’y malaking

kunswelo para sa amin.”

Wala raw kamag-anak na pari

si Msgr. Chavez kaya’t tumutulong

siya sa mga gustong mag-pari

ngunit walang kakayanang

pinansiyal. “Ngunit dahilan sa wala

naman akong maraming inipon,

mangangako siya na babayaran

ako.”

Sinabi naman ni Fr. Monching

na pansamantala lamang siya sa

Bahay-Pari sapagkat gusto niyang

makabalik sa aktibong ministeryo.

Naniniwala si Fr. Pepe na sa

pagiging sakristan, umuusbong ang

pagnanais na maging Pari. Sila ni

Fr. Hermogenes “Jun” Quiambao

ay parehong sakristan ni Msgr.

Clemente Yatco.

Sa gulang na 88, aktibong-

aktibo pa si Msgr. Aquino. Panay

ang halakhakan sa masaya niyang

kuwento ng mahabang buhay at

malakas niyang pangangatawan

samantalang marami niyang

kaklase, kasabayin at estudyante ay

nagsiyao na. “Nagkasakit lamang

ako nang mag-retiro sa Seniorate

sapagkat hindi ako tumigil sa

maraming gawain. Katuwiran ko’y

kaya ako nag-Pari ay upang

maglingkod sa Diyos.” Ngunit

dahil sa humihinang katawan,

bilang na ang kanyang pagmi-Misa

ngunit patuloy ang regular na

pagpapa-kumpisal sa Monasteryo

ng Carmel.

Pinagkumpara naman ni Fr.

Eyong ang samahan ng St. John

Mary Vianney (SJMVA) sa

PAPRA (Parents & Promoters As-

sociation) ng Bauan, Batangas

kung saan siya isinilang. Ang

PAPRA na itinatag ni Cardinal

Ricardo Vidal ay binubuo ng mga

pamilya ng pari at seminarista at

ng mga taga-sulong ng bokasyon,

samantalang ang SJMVA na

itinatag ni Cardinal Rosales ay

binubuo ng mga pamilya ng pari

lamang. Aniya, lumakas ang

bokasyon ng pagpa-pari sa

Bauan dahil sa PAPRA at sila rin

ang nag-aasikaso sa mga

ordinasyon.

“Ngunit may pagkakaiba man,

mabuti ito para sa Arsidiyosesis

sapagkat parehong nagsusulong

ng bokasyon at tumutulong sa

mga Pari. Kung nagkakaroon

man ng problema sa mga Pari,

huwag kayong panghinaan ng

loob, manapa’y dagdagan pa ang

panalangin at pagtataguyod sa

kanila,” pahayag pa niya.

Umaasa si Fr. Eyong na sa

awa ng Diyos, gagaling siya sa

madaling panahon at

makapaglilingkod muli sa

sambayanan ng Diyos.

Inalayan naman ni Gng.

Cenen Cumagun, ina ni Fr. Bon

Cumagun, ng dalawang awitin

ang mga pari; nagbigay ang

samahan ng regalo sa mga Pari,

at nagsalo-salo ang lahat sa

pananghaliang inihanda ng mag-

year of his dies natalis and en-

trance to heaven, on December

8, 2022, 7 years from now.

The homily was given by

Rev. Fr. Rochester “Toter”

Charles Resuello, the present

rector of St. Francis de Sales, as

well as his exemplary attributes.

He mentioned in his sermon

a famous depiction of St.

Francis de Sales which has quite

symbolized his spirituality. This

image is depicted holding the

Bible, which signified the mis-

sion to proclaim the word of

God; and a newspaper, which

signified & reminded us never

to lose touch with the people.

Fr. Toter Resuello also high-

lighted the words of the Holy

Father, Pope Francis which re-

minds us to focus on Jesus when

preaching and to never forget

the poor.

“When you are set on a mis-

sion, bring Jesus, preach Jesus,

proclaim Jesus”, he concluded.

After the homily an audio-

visual video presentation teaser

was also shown, presenting the

different attributes of St. Francis

de Sales as priest, spiritual di-

rector, saint, writer, founder,

doctor & gentleman.

On the same event, a decree

was also released, declaring

every 24th day of the month be

“St. Francis de Sales Day of

Prayer & Study” based on his

inspiration. The decree also

wished that all parishes in the

Archdiocese offer novenas and

masses for the annual feast days

of St. Francis, for the purpose

of knowing more deeply the

teachings of God through him.

The event also aimed to dis-

seminate to the faithful the mes-

sage of the life, writings &

teachings of St. Francis de

Sales.

The copy of the decree was

given to Rev. Fr. Angel Pastor,

Rector Magnificus of St. Francis

de Sales Theological Seminary

dalawang parokyano ng OMPH

Visit ang nagbahagi ng kanilang

naranasan at nadama matapos

makita ng personal ang Santo Pa-

dre.

Ayon kay Ivy Datinguinoo na

unang nagbahagi, lalong nagpalakas

sa kanyang pananampalataya ang

namalas niyang senseridad ng Santo

Papa sa kanyang mga sinasabi ng

makaharap sa MOA Arena. Lalo

aniyang naging maluwag sa kanya

ang pagtanggap sa katotohanan

kung ano meron siya ngayon sa

kabila ng kanyang taglay na

kapansanan sa paningin. Lagi pa

rin aniya naiisasa-isip na una ay ang

Diyos upang manatiling mayaman

sa pananampalataya kahit salat sa

materyal na bagay.

“Hindi nga po siguro kami

sagana sa masasarap na pagkain

subalt nanatili po kaming busog sa

mga salita ng Diyos,” dagdag pa

nya.

nagbahagi ng kanyang karanasan.

Napasama siya sa grupo ng mga

kabataan na nakipagtagpo sa Santo

Papa sa UST. Di daw biro ang

dinanas na hirap nila at nabasa pa

ng ulan makarating lang sa lugar na

kanilang pagtitipunan. Subalit

kagaya ng mga kabataan naroroon

ay napawi lahat ng hirap at pagod

nang makita ang Santo Papa.

“Tumanim po sa aking isipan ang

ilang mga katagang sinabi ng Papa

tulad po ng ‘ang kabataan ang pag-

asa sa pagtataguyod ng

pananampalataya,’ ang kahalagahan

ng buhay at naunawaan ko na rin

po kung anong kultura ng buhay ang

dapat kong itaguyod”. Sinabi rin

niya na isa na siya sa tutugon sa

panawagan ng Simbahan lalo na sa

bahagi ng paglilingkod.

Matapos ang Banal na Oras,

nagbigay ng panayam ang kura

paroko ng Holy Family Parish

(Bolo, Bauan), Rdo. P. Cris de

Guzman, sa may paksang

“Pagpaparami ng Tinapay para sa

mga Dukha”. Ipinaliwanag niya

kung gaano kahalaga ang

pagsasabuhay ng Banal na

Eukaristiya lalo na sa mga

mananampalatayang Katoliko.

Aniya, “dahil ito ay ang

pagaala-ala sa pagpapakasakit ng

Panginoong Jesus, at sa tuwing

nagdaraos nito, tayo ay

nagdiriwang nang masaya at may

pagpupuri sa Diyos bilang isang

sambayanan at magkakapatid na

nagkakasalo-salo.”

Dugtong pa ni P. Cris, “sa ating

mga katoliko, napakahalaga ang

paglalaan ng sarili sa paglilingkod,

sa ganitong paraan ay naibabahagi

natin ng ating kakayahan kung ano

mang meron tayo tulad ng

papaparami ng tinapay sa Banal na

Eukaristiya upang maipadama sa

atin ang pagmamahal ng ating

Panginoong Hesus.”

Sa huling bahagi ng kalahating

araw na pagtitipon, isinagawa ang

isang Misa Konselebrada na

pinangunahan n Rdo. P. Mandy

kaparian ng nasabing Bikariya.

Si Rdo. P. Totit Mandanas ang

siyang nagbigay ng homliya. Doon

siya sa Pulpito nag-homiliya,

Ang buwan ng Enero ay Buwan ngmga Bata sa Arsidiyosesis ng Lipa.Bahagi din ito sa Taon ng Banalna Eukaristiya, inilunsad noongpista ng Kristong Hari, bilang isangtaong paghahanda ng simbahanglokal sa darating na International

Eucharistic Congress sa Enero2016 sa Cebu City.

Ito ay dinaluhan ng mga batamula sa Bikariya I hanggangBikariya ika-7. Ang bawat parokyaay may itinakdang bilang na sampuna kinabibilangan ng mgaestudyante mula sa Catholic

Schools, Public Schools at Alter-

native Learning System. Magingang mga Out of School Youth

(OSY) at Persons with Disability

(PWD) ay kasama. Sila aysinamahan ng kanilang mgakatekista at ganoon din ng mgamagulang sa mahalagang okasyongito ng kanilang buhay-Krisityano.

Makulay ang pagpasok ng magbata sa simbahan: may pulangkarpet na nakalatag na kanilangdinaraanan, at may saliw pa ngmusiko sa kanilang pagpasok sapatyo.

Sinamahan si Arsobispo RamonArguelles sa pagdiriwang ng Ba-nal na Misa ng humigit kumulangsa dalawampung pari, kasama siRdo. P. Noel Magtaas, Provincial

Superior ng mga Oblatos ni SanJose, ang mga paring namamahalasa Bikariya 4 na kung saan angParokya ni San Jose ay kabilang.

Sa kanyang homilya,pinasamalatan ni ArsobispoArguelles ang mga taong lubusangsumuporta sa simbahan upangmaipatid ang kabutihang ngPanginoong si Hesukristo.

“Lubos ang aking pasasalamatsa mga katekista sapagkat sila aykatulong ng magulang upanghubugin ang mga bata para maginganak ng Diyos. Ang katekista, dahil

sa pagmamahal sa Diyos aytinutulungan ang mga magulang,na sila ang dapat maging katekistang sariling mga anak,” ayon saArsobispo.

Ibinahagi pa ng Arsobispo nadama ng mga bata kung nasaan angDiyos, kaya kapag nagdarasal angmga ito, ang Diyos ay masnakikinig at sa pamamagitan nitoay mas makakamtan ang hinihingidahil ang mga bata ay walangkasalanan, malinis ang budhi.

“Mga bata, ugaliing huwaglumayo kay Kristo. Hangga’twalang kasalanan, hangga’t tapat,iisa tayong katawan Niya. Tayo aymga anak ng Diyos. Sana ayhilingin natin sa Mahal na Birhen,ang Ina ng Diyos, sa Poong SanJose, na sana ang mga bata kailanman ay hindi lumayo kay Jesus.Isama din ang inyong mgamagulang sa panalangin,” bilin pang Arsobispo sa mga bata.

Ipinasok din ng Arsobispo angmainit na isyu ng mga namatay sasundalo. Sa pagkamatay ng mgapulis na kung saan buong bayan aynagluluksa, ipinunto ng Arsobispona huwag kamuhian anya ang Mus-lim dahil mahal natin sila. Dalanginna lamang na maging kaisa saiisang katawan at buhay ng Diyos.Sila ay tinawag din ni Diyos upangmaging anak niya. Panalangin pang Arsobispo na sana ay malayosila sa karahasan, sa kasamaan atihanda ang sarili sa patuloy napakikiisa sa Diyos.

Samantala, ipinaliwanag din ngArsobispo ang kahulugan ngkandilang may sindi. Ito umano,ayon sa Arsobispo, ay simbolo ngpagpapanibago ng isang binyagan.“Ilaw na nagsisilbing si Kristo atnagiging ilaw kasama si Kristo,”paliwanag ng Arsobispo.

Lemery, Batangas - Patuloy na isinasagawa ang lingguhang

Your Eminences, Your Excellencies:

I thank you most sincerely for giving me this privilege to speak about

the National Transformation Council. In the light of the Holy Father's

just concluded apostolic visit to our country, which has underscored

the need for moral and spiritual transformation among our people, I

hope and pray that the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church in

the Philippines, which looks forward to a more deeply lived and com-

mitted faith in this country at the dawn of its fifth centenary as a Catholic

nation, would find it timely and opportune to consider not only sup-

porting but owning the objectives of the Council.

Last Friday morning's courtesy call by the visiting Pontiff at

Malacanang provoked a surge of text messages lamenting Mr.

Aquino's unusual "welcome" of his honored state guest. My anxi-

ety in speaking before you today fades as I feel the need to respond

to that unexpected and unprovoked display of religious hostility and

lack of courtesy and politesse, which His Holiness chose not to dig-

nify, in his humility and statesmanship. My courage to speak against

the regime, which is hostile to the Church, is encouraged by His

Holiness' warning against "ideological colonization," among oth-

ers. Recent events, including the aftermath of the Apostolic Visit,

have made more urgent a clearer elucidation of the objectives of

the National Transformation Council.

What is the National Transformation Council? What is my in-

volvement in it as priest and bishop? What, in my judgment, should

be the Church's role in it? What can and what should the CBCP do

to help realize its avowed objectives? These are some of the points

I would like the Conference to ponder on.

What is the National Transformation Council, and what is

our role in it?

The Council came into being in Cebu City four years ago. It sprung

naturally from the shared reflections, and convictions, of a group of

Catholic bishops and priests, Protestant bishops and pastors, Mus-

lim ulama and imams, and laymen and laywomen, who saw the con-

tinuing political and economic crisis of our country as nothing but a

symptom of our profound moral and spiritual malaise. Philippine

society appeared to have lost its sense of what is right and wrong,

good and bad, moral and immoral, legal and illegal; the exercise of

power, the search for sensual pleasure, and the business of making

money, often militating against the simple demands of charity, soli-

darity and the common good, appeared to have become the be-all

and end-all of human existence. Men and women in public and pri-

vate life seek to exclude God from all public existence, and tended to

act “veluti si Deus daretur”---- (as if God did not exist).

Around the same time a number of laymen and laywomen came

out with the idea of organizing a so-called "Catholic vote." They

expressed the conviction that only serious study and earnest imple-

mentation of the Church's social teachings could provide the key to

a real solution to our many national ills. They tried, then as now, to

form groupings to pursue that dream. Sadly, from the clerical sec-

tor, they received declarations saying that these matters should be

left entirely to the laity. Behind the statements seeking "to empower

the laity," they seemed to detect a strategic flight from uncomfort-

able situations. Pope Francis' statement that the shepherd must have

the smell of the sheep is a most fitting and timely reminder to those

who cling to that unhappy outlook. Lay people are disappointed by

the lack of encouragement and support from their priests and bish-

ops, from whom they hear such remarks as, 'the full realization of

the social teachings of the Church is not within our reach'. The

Church therefore is made to appear to be making impossible and

unrealistic demands upon her flock. All the beautiful plans for re-

forms are mere shadow-boxing or striking at the wind.

from the Heart

It was sometime in the early days of September 2001 when the de-

parted Manila Archbishop, His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin, issued a

letter banning the prayer requested by --and the devotion to-- the Ladyof All Nations. I explained to His Eminence that I was a long time devo-

tee and promoter of the Lady of All Nations. Several times I have been

to Amsterdam, Holland's sin-city, where the apparition of Our Lady tookplace in 1947. I am a friend of the local bishop, Most Reverend Josef

Maria Punt, who following his predecessor approved and promotes the

said devotion and all its implications, most particularly the quest for thedefinition of the fifth Marian Dogma, Mary, Co-Redemptrix, Mediatrix

and Advocate. But I assured the Cardinal that since in a short while I

was going to Rome for the 10th Ordinary Bishops' Synod as personalchoice of Pope St John Paul II, I intended to consult Cardinal Ratzinger

about what the then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of

Faith thought about it.Late October, back in the Philippines, I reported to His Eminence

about my tête-à-tête with Cardinal Ratzinger. The future Benedict XVI

declared that the prayer was beautiful and relevant, the title Our Lady ofAll Nations was most worthy of the Mother of the King of kings, the

portrait was wonderful and the devotion must be promoted. Moreover, I

shared with His Eminence my baffling thought that almost soon after hisletter deleterious to the devotion to the Lady of All Nations, the New

York Twin Tower Tragedy struck and shook the entire planet. The prayer

I referred to in my previous article which I pray many times a day espe-cially in between the Rosary decades goes like this: "Lord Jesus Christ,

Son of the Father, send now Your Spirit over the earth. Let the Holy

Spirit live in the hearts of all nations that they may be preserved fromdegeneration, disaster and war. May the Lady of All Nations, the Blessed

Virgin Mary, be our Advocate. Amen.

Sometime in October 1914, I was approached by a high official ofthe CBCP to inform me about a proposal for me to speak to the General

Assembly on the Mediatrix of All Grace. While eager and willing to do

so, I reminded the official that I had already done that some years ago. Iwas asked to submit all available documents to the Episcopal Commis-

sion on the Doctrine of Faith at that time. I did, in fact, submit the same

compilation twice. Then nothing was heard about it. Obviously, the is-sue was shelved. The CBCP official said that the many sad things hap-

pening in the country and the world indicate that what I am saying namely

that the Blessed Mother's requests in Fatima, Lipa and elsewhere is thesolution. Last December another request reached me: Can I talk to the

General Assembly about the National Transformation Council? Again I

was very eager to do so. But I ask, how about the Mediatrix? Will I alsospeak about it in the same forum? The reply came in the December 20,

2014, letter addressed to me by the CBCP: "The (permanent) Council

came up with the consensus that it will abide with the decision of theHoly See regarding the 1948 Lipa events, and it also stands by the inter-

vention of Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle on the doctrine of Mary the

Mediatrix of All Grace." I rest my case but asked to be provided with acopy of the so-called intervention of Cardinal Tagle, which I was till

then unaware of. Up to this moment I have received none. But to my

surprise, on January 20, 2015, the first day of the 110th CBCP GeneralAssembly I saw the program saying that at 1630H the privilege speeches

will be given by Archbishop Ramón Argüelles on the National Transfor-

mation Council, Cardinal Quevedo, OMI, on the Mediatrix of All Graceand the Bishop of Borongan on his appeal for help to his seminary. I

spoke on the NTC and I was astonished that the appeal of the Borongan

bishop came next. Then finally Cardinal Quevedo spoke. He did not sayanything new. Indeed there must be a distinction between the teachings

on Marian Mediation and the so-called Lipa phenomenon. He also spoke

about the fifth Marian dogma which Rome was not ready to tackle dueto possible setback to the movement of ecumenism. The only fairly new

thing in what the Cardinal said was his stressing that the CBCP should

not insist on proposing the fifth Marian dogma, referring surely to thesignature campaign being passed around by lay people. I felt quite

slighted that after being asked to speak on the Mediatrix and then told

about the revocation of the request, which did not originate from me,someone else was made to speak instead. But of course, my position

would have been the exact opposite of His Eminence's stand. Truly ear-

lier I made a strong written affirmation and plea to the bishops that the"CBCP as a whole proclaim loud and clear that this Pueblo Amante de

Maria has a steadfast faith that the Mediatrix of All Grace, truly here in

our midst, revered and heeded, is the cure to the present ill." The Perma-nent Council earlier felt that way. That is why I was asked to re-intro-

duce the subject.

But what happened five days later was a veritable shock. I hope andpray that the bishops realize that. I texted this reflection to the CBCP

President, who was the alter ego of Cardinal Sin long before 2001, four-

teen years ago, until his death. He texted me back a nice 'Thank You'. Iunderstand, it was again my excessive 'fanatic' Marian outlook that char-

acterized my reaction to Cardinal Sin's letter in 2001 and the unforgetta-

ble desolation that came to be associated with 9/11. I cannot help butsee the present disasters afflicting our country in the same perspective.

Sa mga mag-asawa, malinaw na sa sumpaan natin ay naroon ang

pagtanggap natin sa pagiging kamanlilikha ng tao, isang mataas na karangalan

para sa atin na maging daluyan ng buhay. Subalit sa panahon ngayon ay marami

ang ayaw sumunod sa ibinigay ng misyon sa pagpapatuloy ng buhay. Marami

ang mga mag-asawa na ang gusto ay isa hanggang dalawang anak lamang.

Epekto na rin ito ng mga patalastas na higit na mainam ang kakaunti ang anak

para maging maginhawa ang buhay. Hindi ito ang kalooban ng Diyos sa ating

mga may-asawa. Ang isang dagdag na anak natin ay isang dagdag na kaluluwa

na nakalaan sa kaharian ng Diyos pag naging tapat tayo sa sinumpaan na arugain

ang mga anak ayon sa aral ni Kristo.

Ang mag-asawa ay nakalaan sa pagiging iisa (union) at pagiging bukas sa

buhay (procreation). Kaya walang puwang ang anumang uri ng contraception

sa pagpapanatili ng Kristiyanong Pamilya. Upang makaiwas sa kontraseptibong

kaisipan at pamumuhay, naglunsad ng malawakang pagsasanay sa mga liders

ng bawat Parokya ng Billings Ovulation Method noong ika-21 hanggang ika-22

ng Pebrero 2015 na tinaguriang “UPSKILLING COURSE ON BILLINGS OVU-

We continue our spiritual pilgrim-age toward Krakow, where in July2016 the next international WorldYouth Day will be held. As our guidefor the journey we have chosen theBeatitudes. Last year we reflected onthe beatitude of the poor in spirit,within the greater context of the Ser-mon on the Mount. Together we dis-covered the revolutionary meaning ofthe Beatitudes and the powerful sum-mons of Jesus to embark coura-geously upon the exciting quest forhappiness. This year we will reflecton the sixth beatitude: "Blessed arethe pure in heart, for they shall seeGod" (Mt 5:8).

1. The desire for happinessThe word "blessed", or "happy",

occurs nine times in this, Jesus' firstgreat sermon (cf. Mt 5:1-12). It is likea refrain reminding us of the Lord'scall to advance together with him ona road which, for all its many chal-lenges, leads to true happiness.

Dear young friends, this search forhappiness is shared by people of alltimes and all ages. God has placedin the heart of every man and womanan irrepressible desire for happiness,for fulfillment. Have you not noticedthat your hearts are restless, alwayssearching for a treasure which cansatisfy their thirst for the infinite?

The first chapters of the Book ofGenesis show us the splendid "be-atitude" to which we are called. It con-sists in perfect communion with God,with others, with nature, and with our-selves. To approach God freely, to seehim and to be close to him, was partof his plan for us from the beginning;his divine light was meant to illumineevery human relationship with truth

and transparency. In the state of origi-nal purity, there was no need to put onmasks, to engage in ploys or to attemptto conceal ourselves from one another.Everything was clear and pure.

When Adam and Eve yielded totemptation and broke off this relation-ship of trusting communion with God,sin entered into human history (cf. Gen3). The effects were immediately evi-dent, within themselves, in their rela-tionship with each other and with na-ture. And how dramatic the effects are!Our original purity as defiled. From thattime on, we were no longer capable ofcloseness to God. Men and womenbegan to conceal themselves, to covertheir nakedness. Lacking the light whichcomes from seeing the Lord, they saweverything around them in a distortedfashion, myopically. The inner compasswhich had guided them in their questfor happiness lost its point of reference,and the attractions of power, wealth,possessions, and a desire for pleasureat all costs, led them to the abyss ofsorrow and anguish.

In the Psalms we hear the heartfeltplea which mankind makes to God:"What can bring us happiness? Let thelight of your face shine on us, O Lord"(Ps 4:7). The Father, in his infinite good-ness, responded to this plea by send-ing his Son. In Jesus, God has takenon a human face. Through his Incarna-tion, life, death and resurrection, Jesusfrees us from sin and opens new andhitherto unimaginable horizons.

Dear young men and women, inChrist you find fulfilled your every de-sire for goodness and happiness. Healone can satisfy your deepest longings,which are so often clouded by decep-tive worldly promises. As Saint JohnPaul II said: "He is the beauty to whichyou are so attracted; it is he who pro-vokes you with that thirst for fullness

that will not let you settle for compro-mise; it is he who urges you to shedthe masks of a false life; it is he whoreads in your hearts your most genu-ine choices, the choices that otherstry to stifle. Let us now try to understand morefully how this blessedness comesabout through purity of heart. First ofall, we need to appreciate the biblicalmeaning of the word heart. In Hebrewthought, the heart is the centre of theemotions, thoughts and intentions ofthe human person. Since the Bibleteaches us that God does not look toappearances, but to the heart (cf. 1Sam16:7), we can also say that it isfrom the heart that we see God. Thisis because the heart is really the hu-man being in his or her totality as aunity of body and soul, in his or herability to love and to be loved.

As for the definition of the wordpure, however, the Greek word usedby the evangelist Matthew iskatharos, which basically meansclean, pure, undefiled. In the Gospelwe see Jesus reject a certain concep-tion of ritual purity bound to exteriorpractices, one which forbade all con-tact with things and people (includinglepers and strangers) considered im-pure. To the Pharisees who, like somany Jews of their time, ate nothingwithout first performing ritual ablutionsand observing the many traditions as-sociated with cleansing vessels, Je-sus responds categorically: "There isnothing outside a man which by go-ing into him can defile him; but thethings which come out of a man are

Women as Cardinals?

liturgy and dean of theology at the Regina Apostolorum University.)

Q: I understand that technically anyone, even a woman, can be

appointed a cardinal because a cardinal does not have to be

a bishop or priest. Kindly enlighten. Secondly, the Holy

Father is also the bishop of Rome. In Manila the cardinal is

also called the “archbishop” and not bishop of Manila. Why?

A: I think we need to distinguish different questions. First, may awoman be appointed cardinal? Second, could women beinvolved in a papal election? Finally, what is the distinctionbetween archdiocese and diocese?

In response to the first question I would say that the answer isno.

It is true that the cardinalate is a dignity and not a sacred order.It is also true, however, that from the very beginning of the officethe cardinals have been associated with the clerical state.

The cardinals are divided into three orders -- bishops, priestsand deacons -- even though almost all of them are actually bishops.This is because from a relatively early period the election of thebishop of Rome was restricted to the bishops of the dioceses sur-rounding the Diocese of Rome: Albano, Sabina-Poggio Mirteto,Porto Santa Ruffina, Velletri-Segni, Frascati, Palestrina and Ostia,which is no longer a functioning diocese and is usually held by thedean of the College of Cardinals.

To these were added the most important priests of the RomeDiocese and the deacons who at that time were relatively few innumber and often had the responsibility for its administration. Thisdistribution is still reflected in the distribution of cardinals, of whichthere are six cardinal bishops, 160 cardinal priests and 39 cardinaldeacons.

As time went on the title was widely granted to bishops of otherdioceses and those who worked within the Roman Curia. How-ever, the connection with the clergy of Rome was always main-tained by granting each cardinal a titular church of which he is, soto speak, honorary parish priest or deacon.

It is true that the title was granted occasionally to those whowere not ordained, but not, strictly speaking, to non-clerics. At thattime a man canonically entered the clerical state (and the obliga-tion of celibacy) by receiving first tonsure, and this was a mini-mum requirement for being named cardinal. Unfortunately, someof these behaved more like princes than as clerics and had littleintention of proceeding toward ordination.

Others, however, were notable. Pius VII’s secretary of state Car-dinal Ercole Consalvi (1757-1824) never progressed further thandeacon and was already a cardinal a year when the Pope ordainedhim to this office. It is said that on his way to exile Napoleon Bona-parte remarked that Cardinal Consalvi, who was not a priest, wasmore of a priest than many who were.

From the time of Pope St. John XXIII, all cardinals should bebishops, but the Pope may and often does grant an exemption tothis requirement if requested by the person being named cardinal.In general this has only been granted to those priests nominatedafter they had passed their 80th year.

Therefore, since the cardinalate is historically tied to the cleri-cal state I would say that this is an impediment to women beingnamed cardinal.

This does not mean that women had no role whatsoever. Womenwere probably involved in some ways in the election of the bishopin ancient times when this election was done by the assembled faith-ful. This system produced the occasional St. Ambrose. But it couldalso provoke deep divisions and was more subject to manipulationby political powers. The system was eventually abandoned.

In some periods in which the power of the state had a stronghand in naming bishops, some queens, such as Isabella of Castile(1451-1504), had no small role in choosing the episcopate eventhough the appointment fell ultimately upon the pope.

The election of the pope by the College of Cardinals is not ofdivine right; it has had relatively exclusive rights to papal electionssince 1059. However, it is ultimately rooted in very ancient tradi-tions of communion among neighboring churches that has gradu-ally been adapted over time to reflect the present situation of theuniversal Church.

However, hypothetically speaking, under a completely new sys-tem of electing a pope, it is possible that women could also beinvolved.

Finally, it is not quite correct to say that the pope is also bishopof Rome. It is more correct to say that the bishop of Rome is, bythat very fact, the pope. There could not be a pope who is not bishopof Rome, although there have been situations when he was not resi-dent in the city. This unique status of the Diocese of Rome hasmeant that it is not formally an archdiocese.

Without going into too much detail, let me say that an archdio-cese is usually the most important and oldest diocese in an ecclesi-astical province in which the other dioceses have been created fromterritory taken from the original diocese. The archbishop has cer-tain duties rights and responsibilities toward the other dioceses ofthe province, although he does not have any real authority overthem. #UB

After observing a whole Year of theLaity, the common feeling is that theclergy are simply good at lecturing onmorality and correct doctrine, but ill-pre-pared to see these things transformedinto action. When the time comes foraction, Church leaders convenientlyfade away. In the welcome speech pre-viously mentioned, Mr. Aquino accusedpriests and bishops of having donenothing about the evils prevalent dur-ing the past administrations of Mr.Marcos and Mrs. Macapagal Arroyo. Ihave to agree partially with this obser-vation, because many Churchmencould not be silenced but not everyonespoke out during those times. Thepriests and bishops could have donemore to denounce corruption, injustice,abuses, crimes, frauds and all sorts ofdisorder everywhere. Without referringto his own problems, Mr. Aquino toldthe Pope that corruption was a prob-lem. The National Transformation Coun-cil was born with the end in view of re-storing God's presence in public life, ofmaking civil society publicly account-able once more to the laws of God andthe laws of men, of giving flesh to theChurch's doctrine on creating a bettercountry and a more just society, accord-ing to the plan of God, the social teach-ings of the Church, and the CBCP di-rectives expressed in many of its pro-nouncements. Although we are a secu-lar rather than a confessional state, andwe recognize the constitutional sepa-ration between Church and state, ourown Constitution, in the first words ofits Preamble, recognizes the sover-eignty of God over the affairs of the stateand all men and women.

As men of God, it is our right andduty to provide moral and spiritual guid-ance to the laity, especially those whorecognize that their political, economicand social activities must be deeplyrooted in the moral law and the truthsof our faith. Together with the moral andspiritual leaders of the other faiths, thisis the charge I accepted as priest andbishop when I joined the National Trans-formation Council.

Since August 27 of last year, thisCouncil has convened several assem-blies in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.The first assembly was held in the Arch-diocese of Lipa, followed by those inCebu, Butuan, Angeles, Davao andGeneral Santos. These have produceda number of declarations, bound to-gether by a common thread----the de-mand, repeated and elaborated upon,from one assembly to another, for re-gime and systems change. This de-mand is premised on the deeply sharedbelief, arising from indisputable facts,namely,1) that contrary to the uncritical impres-sion of many, the Aquino presidency isat best de facto rather than de jure, theresult of an illegitimate, illegal andfraudulent electoral process, whichsince 2010 certain parties have actu-ally asked the Supreme Court to in-validate, and which the Court has onlylately decided to give due course;2) that by his overt unconstitutional andillegal acts, Mr. Aquino has destroyedthe rule of law and the constitutionalorder in our country;3) that he has lost the moral authorityto govern and has become a danger toour democratic and republican stateand to the peace, freedom, security andmore and spiritual wellbeing of our peo-ple; and4) that he and his entire administrationmust now step down and allow a non-partisan transitional council to take overand fix the broken constitutional and po-

litical system before we hold the nextnational elections.

Why do the Council and its variousassemblies question the legitimacyof Mr Aquino and his administra-tion?

First of all, because the 2010 elec-tions, like the 2013 elections, were con-ducted by Smartmatic, a foreign privatecompany, which did not have the con-stitutional mandate to conduct any elec-tion, on behalf of the Commission onElections, which has the sole constitu-tional authority to conduct elections;

Secondly, because the electionsused the precinct count optical scan (orPCOS) machine, after it was divested,illegally, of all the known safety featuresand accuracy mechanisms provided bylaw and built into the terms of referenceunder which the machine was to beused;1

Thirdly, because the Comelec hasfailed to explain to the satisfaction ofthe skeptical public the various electionincidents tending to show actual cheat-ing and manipulation of the entire elec-toral process in favor of those who arenow in office.

Fourthly, because the Comelec hasrefused and continues to refuse to re-spond to the rising clamor for a reformof the automated voting system, byconsidering a more transparent andtruly dependable alternative toSmartmatic and the PCOS machine.On the contrary, the present obviouslycorrupt COMELEC, against the objec-tions of so many, has illegally enteredagain into negotiations, at the tune ofbillions of pesos of the people's money,to purchase defective machines for useagain in what promises to be anotherfraudulent election in 2016. Without aclean and honest election, the avenuefor peaceful change and for the redressof grievances is completely abolished,and the government is tempting thegods by telling the people, in effect, thattheir only option is violence. Underthose circumstances, our society couldexplode, despite all our prayers andgood wishes.

What are the unconstitutional and il-legal acts which have rendered Mr.Aquino impeachable and unfit tocontinue in office?

In violation of his solemn oath to"faithfully and conscientiously fulfill hisduties as President of the Philippines,preserve and defend the Constitution,execute all our laws, do justice to everyman, and consecrate himself to theservice of the nation," Mr. Aquino actu-ally bribed the members of Congress,using the Priority Development Assist-ance Fund and the Disbursement Ac-celeration Program, both of which havebeen declared unconstitutional by theSupreme Court, to force the enactmentof the anti-poor, anti-Catholic and un-constitutional Reproductive Health Law,and to impeach and remove SupremeCourt Chief Justice Renato Corona fordeeply troubling reasons.2 No Presi-dent has ever corrupted Congress inthis manner before. No President hasplayed around with the budget in thismanner before. And no President hastried to seize control of the threebranches of government in this man-ner before.3

By his acts, Mr. Aquino has becomeimpeachable, several times over, forculpable violation of the Constitution,bribery and the corruption of public of-fice and officials, graft and corruption,other high crimes and betrayal of pub-lic trust. But he could not be impeachedsimply because the members of Con-gress who exercise the exclusive powerto impeach any impeachable official,and try and convict any impeached of-ficial, are involved in the same crime

for which our beloved President hasbecome impeachable, several timesover.

This was amply demonstrated lastyear, after the Supreme Court struckdown the PDAF and the DAP as un-constitutional, and directed the pros-ecution of all those involved in theabuse and manipulation of the PDAFand the DAP, when the Committee onJustice in the House of Representa-tives summarily threw out several im-peachment complaints against MrAquino for being insufficient in sub-stance. Now, instead of complyingwith the ruling of our highest court, MrAquino, with the completely unques-tioning cooperation of Congress, sim-ply reenacted, in his P2.6 trillion 2015budget, all the discretionary lumpsums in the 2013 budget, which hadbeen outlawed by the Court, and re-defined "savings" to allow himself toreclassify any appropriations as "sav-ings" and use them for whatever pur-pose he may deem fit, without the par-ticipation of Congress. So the unpun-ished crime is repeated, and we con-tinue to be ruled by a President andan administration that had long lost themoral authority to remain in office.

What does all of this mean? To theCouncil and its various assemblies,this means that the Constitution, thewhole political system, no longerworks. It has been completely setaside, and the State has fallen into thehands of an ill-disguised dictatorship.This has grave implications upon themoral and spiritual life of our people,who look to us for guidance as theirfaithful shepherd. We have here a situ-ation where those in high positions ofpolitical power are now in rebellionagainst the common good, against theConstitution and the State, while theleast of our brethren, who know thatin a democratic and republican state,sovereignty resides in the people andall government authority emanatesfrom them, are eager to assert theirright to seek radical but peacefulchange.

I believe with all my heart that it isa just cause, and poor sinner that I am,I have decided to support it with all mystrength. Therefore, in the name ofGod and our Mother Church, and allthat is just and good about our nation,I now ask my brother Bishops to joinme, to join us, in this noble enterprise.Our Holy Father has challenged us tobuild a modern society on solidgrounds----a society respectful of au-thentic human values, protective of ourGod-given human dignity and rights,and ready to confront new and com-plex political and ethical questions.The National Transformation Counciloffers us a unique and unprecedentedopportunity to respond to this chal-lenge, in full communion with the laity,and the members of the other faiths. Ipray, on bended knees, and invokingthe help of the Mediatrix of All Grace,that we do not waste it and that we donot in the least let this Pueblo Amantede Maria down.

Ang Pondong Batangan sa Liwanag ngPangkuaresmang Mensahe ni Papa Francisco

Isang malaki at malalang katotohanan ang binigyang-pansinni Papa Francisco para sa kanyang Mensahe para saKuwaresma ngayong taong ito, ito ay walang iba kundi angtinatawag niyang “global indifference.” Sa mas kaunaunawangpaliwanag, ito ay tumutukoy sa lumalaganap na pagwawalangbahala o kawalan ng malasakit ng tao sa kanyang kapwa, lalona sa mga dukha, at nangangailangan. Ang panawagang itong Papa ay nagbibigay ng panibagong inspirasyon at kahulugansa Pondong Batangan. Bagamat ang Pondong Batangan ayhindi isang “lenten fund raising campaign,” sa halip, angpaanyaya nito ay gawin itong bahagi ng estilo ng pamumuhayng lahat ng Batangueno, (kaya’t ito ay patuloy-tuloy sa lahatng araw o panahon) ang diwa at gawa nito ay pinagtitibay ngnabanggit na mensahe ng Santo Papa.

Ang “Global Indifference” ayon kay Papa Francisco

Ang pagwawalang-bahala o malasakit sa kapwa ay sinasabinatin marahil na kasama na ng pagiging madamot o makasariling tao. Subalit sa santo papa ito ay bunga na rin ng isang uring pamumuhay sa ngayon na lumilikha rin ng isang kaisipan.Ang sabi ng papa: “Usually, when we are healthy and com-fortable, we forget about others: we are unconcerned withtheir problems, their sufferings and the injustices they en-dure...” Alalaong baga, ang uri at estilo ng pamumuhay ngayono ang kaalwanan sa buhay dala ng kasalukuyang panahon aynagbubunga sa tao ng “pakiramdam” na siya ay nakasasapatsa sarili at hindi niya kailangan ang kapwa na sa paglaon aynagiging saloobing manhid o pusong “bato” sapangangailangan at kahirapan ng iba.

Sa salitang “indifference” ay makikita ang ugat na salitang“difference” o kaibahan. Sa pagpansin sa kaibahan ng kapwanangyayari ang pagsasantabi sa kanya sapagkat siya ay kaiba.Kapag winalang bahala naman itong kaibahan ng kapwa, itoay nauuwi sa hangad na pagkakatulad o “uniformity.” Angtama, sana ang pagkakaiba ay magdulot ng pagkakaisangmatibay at mabunga. Ito ang dulot ng pagkakaisa sa pag-ibigni Kristo.

Kaya sa mensahe ng Papa ay gayon na lamang ang kanyangpagbibigay-diin sa ating kaisahan bilang simbahan, (kasamapa ang kaisahan ng mga banal sa langit). Ang sabi niya: “Saating pakikiisa sa panalangin ng Simbahan sa langit. Angpanalangin ng Simbahan sa lupa ay naglulunsad ngpagkakaisa sa paglilingkod at kabutihan na umaabot sapaningin ng Diyos.” (By uniting ourselves in prayer with theChurch in heaven. The prayers of the Church on earth es-tablish a communion of mutual service and goodness whichreaches up into the sight of God.) Dagdag pa niya, angkawalan ng pagmamalasakit (indifference) aynapagtatagumpayan ng pag-ibig.

Ang Pondong Batangan sa Buhay ng Nagkakaisa

at Nagtutulungang Batangueño

Maliwanag na sa Pondong Batangan ay natitipon o naiiponang iba’t ibang barya na alay ng iba’t ibang mga Batangueño,matanda at bata, mayaman at dukha, may pinag-aralan atwala at marami pang katangian ng pagkakaiba-iba. Totoo,maiisa-isa ang maraming pagkakaiba, subalit ang lahat ng itoay naisasantabi sa pagsasama-sama at pagdadamayangbinubuhay ng pag-ibig ni Kristo sa mga Batangueno. Dahil ngasa naituro at naitanim ng diwa nitong Pondong Batangan sakamalayan at puso ng Batangueno, ito ngayon aypinagkakaisahang itaguyod ng mga Batangueno, ng iba’t ibangmga parokya at komunidad sa Arsidiyosesis ng Lipa. Sapamamagitan nito ay marami ang natutulungan at naitataasang antas ng buhay.

Ang Pondong Batangan bilang isa gawa ng pagmamahal atpagmamalasakit sa kapwa ay isang tunay at makabuluhangparaan upang buwagin itong “global indifference” olumalaganap na kawalan ng pakiki-alam o pakikisangkot sakapwa. Ang sabi pa nga ni Papa Francisco sa kanyangmensahe: “Makakatulong tayo sa mga gawaing pag-ibig opagkakawanggawa para sa mga nasa malapit o malayo sapamamagitan ng mga samahang pangsimbahan.” (We canhelp by acts of charity, reaching out to both those near andfar through the Church's many charitable organizations.) Ditosa Arsidiyosesis ng Lipa ay nagagawa nating makatulong samarami sa pamamagitan nitong Pondong Batangan, naaabotat nahihipo natin ang kanilang buhay at pagkatao sapamamagitan nito. Ito ay hindi isang samahan o kilusangpangsimbahan subalit ito ay bahagi ng buhay ng atingSimbahang Lokal at ng bawat Batanguenong nagtataguyodnito. Launching sa Santa Clara - Du-long Ilaya ng Barangay San Luis,Santo Tomas na sakop naman ngParokya ni Santa Clara, naganapang paglulunsad ng MSK, noongPebrero 8, 2015 ganap na ika-3:00ng hapon. Ang nasabing lugal aybumubuo ng mahigit na 40kapitbahayan. Maaga pa lamang ngaraw na iyon ay makikita ang buongpwersa ng pagkilos. Mgakalalakihan na nag-sasaayos nglugal na pagdadausan. Mgakababaihan na naghahanda ng mgapagsasaluhan, ilang kabataangwalang pagod na sinusugo paron atparito sa paghahakot ng gamit at dirin matatawaran ang mga batanganino’y may pistahan isasagawa.

Sa pasimula ng homiliya aysinabi ni P. Rustam Sabularse, angKura Paroko, na ito ay pakiki-isana rin sa pagdiriwang ng Buwan ngMSK sa ating Arsidiyosesis. Ayonpa rin sa kanya, ang pagsang-ayonna ang lugal na ito ang paglapatanng nasabing programa ay sa dahilanna tuwing siya ay dumaraannagkakaroon siya ng pagtatanong sakanyang sarili. May mga nakatirapa kaya sa mga papasok na daan salugal na ito?

Siya rin ay naniniwala sa

kahalagahan ng pagsasama-sama ngmga kapitbahayan sa paglago sapananampalataya, na angpinakamainam na pundasyon aysama-samang pag-aaral, pagninilayat bahaginan na nakaugat sa Salitang Diyos. Kaya't iniwan niya angisang hamon na dito ang lahatmagsisimula.

Pagkatapos ng Banal na Misanagsama-sama ang lahat sa isangmunting salu-salo kung saan kaisarin ang mga aktibongmananampalataya mula sa iba’t-ibang bahagi Sambayanan. RATIONALE: THE VALUE OF PRAYER IN THE HEART OF THE CHURCH

St. Teresa of Avila consistently underscored that the goal of contemplative life is apostolic and ecclesial.

Her sensibility asks of us to see and discern what is happening today, in our secularized and post-modern

world. The relativism prevalent in the West is now increasingly becoming a global reality. "If something

should rightly disturb us and trouble our consciences, it is the fact that so many of our brothers and sisters are

living without the strength, light and consolation born of friendship with Jesus Christ . . . THE CHURCH

URGENTLY NEEDS THE DEEP BREATH OF PRAYER". At the same time, paradoxically, we are seeing

more and more signs of a new religious awakening and of a spiritual hunger symptomatic of humanity's

deepest yearnings. To help us re-evaluate human dignity, threatened as it is by today's culture, we have St.

Teresa's vision of the human person as the dwelling place of God, open to communion with Him as a friend,

able to welcome Him at the center of the Castle, his soul. "I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very

moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter

them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for

him or her, since no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord." It is time for Carmel to go and deliver

this invitation.

aaral. Siya ay college student.

Patuloy siyang nagpupuri at

nagpapasalamat sa Dyos at isa sa

nagiging prayer leader sa prayer

meeting. Isa din siyang member

ng SJCCPC music ministry.

what defile him. For from within, out ofthe heart of man, come evil thoughts,fornication, theft, murder, adultery, cov-eting, wickedness, deceit, licentious-ness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness"(Mk 7:15, 21-22).

In what, then, does the happinessborn of a pure heart consist? From Je-sus' list of the evils which make some-one impure, we see that the questionhas to do above all with the area of ourrelationships. Each one of us must learnto discern what can "defile" his or herheart and to form his or her consciencerightly and sensibly, so as to be capa-ble of "discerning the will of God, whatis good and acceptable and perfect"(Rom 12:2). We need to show a healthyconcern for creation, for the purity ofour air, water and food, but how muchmore do we need to protect the purityof what is most precious of all: our heartand our relationships. This "humanecology" will help us to breathe the pureair that comes from beauty, from truelove, and from holiness.

Once I asked you the question:"Where is your treasure? In what doesyour heart find its rest?" (cf. Interviewwith Young People from Belgium, 31March 2014). Our hearts can be at-tached to true or false treasures, theycan find genuine rest or they can sim-ply slumber, becoming lazy and lethar-gic. The greatest good we can have inlife is our relationship with God. Are youconvinced of this? Do you realize howmuch you are worth in the eyes of God?Do you know that you are loved andwelcomed by him unconditionally, as in-deed you are? Once we lose our senseof this, we human beings become anincomprehensible enigma, for it is theknowledge that we are loved uncondi-tionally by God which gives meaning toour lives. Do you remember the con-versation that Jesus had with the richyoung man (cf. Mk 10:17-22)? Theevangelist Mark observes that the Lordlooked upon him and loved him (v. 21),and invited him to follow him and thusto find true riches. I hope, dear youngfriends, that this loving gaze of Christwill accompany each of you through-out life.

Youth is a time of life when your de-sire for a love which is genuine, beauti-ful and expansive begins to blossom inyour hearts. How powerful is this abilityto love and to be loved! Do not let thisprecious treasure be debased, de-stroyed or spoiled. That is what hap-pens when we start to use our neigh-bours for our own selfish ends, evenas objects of pleasure. Hearts are bro-ken and sadness follows upon thesenegative experiences. I urge you: Donot be afraid of true love, the love thatJesus teaches us and which Saint Pauldescribes as "patient and kind". Paulsays: "Love is not jealous or boastful; itis not arrogant or rude. Love does notinsist on its own way; it is not irritable orresentful; it does not rejoice at wrong,but rejoices in the right. Love bears allthings, believes all things, hopes allthings, endures all things" (1 Cor 13:4-8).

In encouraging you to rediscover thebeauty of the human vocation to love, Ialso urge you to rebel against the wide-spread tendency to reduce love tosomething banal, reducing it to itssexual aspect alone, deprived of itsessential characteristics of beauty, com-munion, fidelity and responsibility. Dearyoung friends, "in a culture of relativ-ism and the ephemeral, many preachthe importance of 'enjoying' the mo-ment. They say that it is not worth mak-ing a life-long commitment, making adefinitive decision, 'for ever', becausewe do not know what tomorrow willbring. I ask you, instead, to be revolu-tionaries, I ask you to swim against the

tide; yes, I am asking you to rebelagainst this culture that sees everythingas temporary and that ultimately be-lieves you are incapable of responsibil-ity, that believes you are incapable oftrue love. I have confidence in you andI pray for you. Have the courage to'swim against the tide'. And also havethe courage to be happy" (Meeting withthe Volunteers of the XXVIII Word YouthDay, 28 July 2013).

You young people are brave adven-turers! If you allow yourselves to dis-cover the rich teachings of the Churchon love, you will discover that Christi-anity does not consist of a series of pro-hibitions which stifle our desire for hap-piness, but rather a project for life ca-pable of captivating our hearts.

3. …for they shall see GodIn the heart of each man and

woman, the Lord's invitation constantlyresounds: "Seek my face!" (Ps 27:8).At the same time, we must always re-alize that we are poor sinners. For ex-ample, we read in the Book of Psalms:"Who can climb the mountain of theLord? Who shall stand in his holy place?The one who has clean hands and apure heart" (Ps 24:3-4). But we mustnever be afraid or discouraged:throughout the Bible and in the historyof each one of us we see that it is al-ways God who takes the first step. Hepurifies us so that we can come intohis presence.

When the prophet Isaiah heard theLord's call to speak in his name, he wasterrified and said: "Woe is me! For I amlost; for I am a man of unclean lips" (Is6:5). And yet the Lord purified him,sending to him an angel who touchedhis lips, saying: "Your guilt is takenaway, and your sin is forgiven" (v. 7). Inthe New Testament, when on theshores of lake Genessaret Jesus calledhis first disciples and performed the signof the miraculous catch of fish, SimonPeter fell at his feet, exclaiming: "De-part from me, for I am a sinful man, OLord" (Lk 5:8). Jesus' reply was imme-diate: "Do not be afraid; henceforth youwill be fishers of men" (v. 10). And whenone of the disciples of Jesus asked him:"Lord, show us the Father, and we shallbe satisfied", the Master replied: "Hewho has seen me has seen the Father(Jn 14:8-9).

The Lord's invitation to encounterhim is made to each of you, in what-ever place or situation you find your-self. It suffices to have the desire for "arenewed personal encounter with Je-sus Christ, or at least an openness toletting him encounter you; I ask all ofyou to do this unfailingly each day" (cf.Evangelii Gaudium, 3). We are all sin-ners, needing to be purified by the Lord.But it is enough to take a small steptowards Jesus to realize that he awaitsus always with open arms, particularlyin the sacrament of Reconciliation, aprivileged opportunity to encounter thatdivine mercy which purifies us and re-news our hearts.

Dear young people, the Lord wantsto meet us, to let himself "be seen" byus. "And how?", you might ask me.Saint Teresa of Avila, born in Spain fivehundred years ago, even as a younggirl, said to her parents, "I want to seeGod". She subsequently discovered theway of prayer as "an intimate friendshipwith the One who makes us feel loved"(Autobiography, 8,5). So my questionto you is this: "Are you praying?" Doyou know that you can speak with Je-sus, with the Father, with the Holy Spirit,as you speak to a friend? And not justany friend, but the greatest and mosttrusted of your friends! You will discoverwhat one of his parishioners told theCuré of Ars: "When I pray before thetabernacle, 'I look at him, and he looksat me'" (Catechism of the Catholic

POPE FRANCIS... P. 6 Church, 2715).Once again I invite you to encoun-

ter the Lord by frequently reading sa-cred Scripture. If you are not already inthe habit of doing so, begin with theGospels. Read a line or two each day.Let God's word speak to your heart andenlighten your path (cf.Ps 119:105). Youwill discover that God can be "seen"also in the face of your brothers andsisters, especially those who are mostforgotten: the poor, the hungry, thosewho thirst, strangers, the sick, those im-prisoned (cf. Mt 25:31-46). Have youever had this experience? Dear youngpeople, in order to enter into the logicof the Kingdom of Heaven, we mustrecognize that we are poor with thepoor. A pure heart is necessarily onewhich has been stripped bare, a heartthat knows how to bend down andshare its life with those most in need.

Encountering God in prayer, the read-ing of the Bible and in the fraternal lifewill help you better to know the Lord andyourselves. Like the disciples on the wayto Emmaus (cf. Lk 24:13-35), the Lord'svoice will make your hearts burn withinyou. He will open your eyes to recog-nize his presence and to discover theloving plan he has for your life.

Some of you feel, or will soon feel,the Lord's call to married life, to form-ing a family. Many people today thinkthat this vocation is "outdated", but thatis not true! For this very reason, theecclesial community has been engagedin a special period of reflection on thevocation and the mission of the familyin the Church and the contemporaryworld. I also ask you to considerwhether you are being called to the con-secrated life or the priesthood. Howbeautiful it is to see young people whoembrace the call to dedicate them-selves fully to Christ and to the serviceof his Church! Challenge yourselves,and with a pure heart do not be afraidof what God is asking of you! From your"yes" to the Lord's call, you will becomenew seeds of hope in the Church andin society. Never forget: God's will is ourhappiness!

4. On the way to Krakow"Blessed are the pure in heart, for

they shall see God" (Mt 5:8). Dearyoung men and women, as you see,this beatitude speaks directly to yourlives and is a guarantee of your happi-ness. So once more I urge you: Havethe courage to be happy!

This year's World Youth Day beginsthe final stage of preparations for thegreat gathering of young people fromaround the world in Krakow in 2016.Thirty years ago Saint John Paul II in-stituted World Youth Days in theChurch. This pilgrimage of young peo-ple from every continent under the guid-ance of the Successor of Peter has trulybeen a providential and prophetic ini-tiative. Together let us thank the Lordfor the precious fruits which these WorldYouth Days have produced in the livesof countless young people in every partof the globe! How many amazing dis-coveries have been made, especiallythe discovery that Christ is the Way, theTruth and the Life! How many peoplehave realized that the Church is a bigand welcoming family! How many con-versions, how many vocations havethese gatherings produced! May thesaintly Pope, the Patron of World YouthDay, intercede on behalf of our pilgrim-age toward his beloved Krakow. Andmay the maternal gaze of the BlessedVirgin Mary, full of grace, all-beautifuland all-pure, accompany us at everystep along the way.
