Imaging Institute Updates

Q3/Q4 2011 Edition

Imaging Institute Completes Expansion Phases 1A and 1B Developed under the leadership of Imaging Institute Chairman Greg Borkowski, MD (GL-1 ’72, IM ’74, DR ’79), the expansion project is being designed by Anshen and Allen, a San Francisco architecture firm specializing in medical facilities, and Bostwick Design Group in Cleveland.

Phases 1A and 1B of a major expansion and renovation of the Imaging Institute are complete. The project consists of six phases. Phase 1A features an interventional MRI suite. Phase 1B, consolidating many of our MRI units into the lower level of Glickman Tower, features MRI vaults, integrated patient preparation and recovery bays, induction suites that share resources with the IMRIS Intra-operative MRI suites, physician reading rooms, staff lounge, patient waiting area, and outpatient clinical exam rooms.

Phase 2, targeted to start construction in Q1 2012, consolidates CT and will include five areas – outpatient CT; procedural CT; inpatient CT; outpatient CT sub-waiting, changing and preparation; and a multipurpose space for inpatient holding and recovery, an abdominal section reading room, staff break room/conference room and a digital teaching library.

Phases 3 through 6 are in various stages of planning.

Imaging Institute Staff Provides Readings 24/7Starting September 1, 2011, the Imaging Institute provides 24/7 stat plain film reading, in addition to stat CT, Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine studies from the emergency rooms and inpatient settings. Previously, the plain film images that were taken of emergency room patients during the night were read by the emergency medicine staff.

Additionally, under the leadership of Dr. Borkowski, a virtual radiologist cluster model is being developed to provide increased access to sub-specialty interpretation across the Cleveland Clinic Enterprise PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System).

Medina Hospital Joins CCHS in July 2011The Imaging Institute welcomes Medina Hospital into the Cleveland Clinic family of healthcare



facilities. The integration of imaging services at Medina Hospital into the Imaging Institute was completed in July. The Institute will fully manage the professional and technical aspects of imaging services provided at Medina. The department will continue to be managed by Regional Radiology. Existing imaging services at Medina include analog mammography, ultrasound, general x-ray, CT, nuclear medicine and MRI.

A 118-bed facility, Medina Hospital images about 71,000 patients annually with a full line of imaging services, including a 1.5T Siemens Espree wide-bore MRI installed this March, mobile PET/CT services in July and digital mammography shortly thereafter. The Imaging Medical Director is James Littman, MD, who has served Medina Hospital and its patient community for 20 years.

Imaging Started at Twinsburg Family Health Center in July 2011

Imaging at the Twinsburg FHC began in July 2011, with services that include nuclear medicine, CT, MRI, general x-ray, fluoroscopy, digital mammography, bone density and ultrasound. The Twinsburg facility includes an emergency department and laboratory medicine. Imaging’s CT

and general x-ray facilities will be open 24/7 due to the presence of emergency services.

Avon Family Health Center to Open in December 2011

Residents of Avon and surrounding communities will be able to obtain their imaging studies at the new Avon Family Health Center as of December. Bone density, general x-ray, mammography, CT, ultrasound, MRI and nuclear medicine studies will be performed in the new facility.

Siemens PACS Conversion to AgfaThe Imaging Institute’s conversion from Enterprise Siemens to Agfa PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) is steadily progressing. All “new” imaging studies for CCHS Enterprise are currently routing into Agfa; migration of earlier images continues at a steady pace, averaging about 15,000 studies per day. Hillcrest (non-Mamms) went live in March, with the following sites now live on Agfa: Main Campus mammography, Weston, Hillcrest, Medina, Twinsburg, Main Campus Technologists (including FHC Technologists), Fairview and Stephanie Tubbs Jones Health Center.

Imaging Editors ForumOn August 19–20, the Imaging Institute hosted the 2011 Imaging Editors Forum at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. Attendees included 21 editors from imaging journals throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe and editorial support staff from the RSNA. Topics included

conflicts of interest in medical research and dialogue around various topics of interest to the overall forum. Tours were provided of Main Campus and the Imaging Institute with positive feedback received on Cleveland Clinic facilities and the overall organization of the forum. Thank you, Mirian Vasquez.



Commitment to Respect FormulatedWith the increased emphasis that is placed on patient satisfaction, as evidenced by more than 2,000 hospitals participating in the Press Ganey Surveys mailed randomly to patients receiving outpatient services, the Imaging Institute leadership met in July to discuss enhancing our patients’ experience. The discussion resulted in the institute’s Commitment to Respect document. A positive patient experience begins with how we as caregivers interact with each other as a healthcare delivery team. The Commitment to Respect represents the “commitment” we make to each other on how we agree to interact with each other as a team. The commitment represents observable behaviors that include:• All members of the care delivery team are

valued equally• We create a positive environment of respect

and appreciation• We are all caregivers and help each other

achieve our potential• Patients, their families and significant

others are the most important people to the healthcare team.

The Commitment to Respect is in the process of being cascaded to all institute employees. It is the institute’s vision that our Commitment to Respect will become a cornerstone of our culture within Imaging.

Professional PresentationsThe Imaging Institute radiologists were very active in professional society presentations during the month of March. Seven presentations were given at the Society of Thoracic Radiology, attended by Drs. Meziane, Mohammed, JamJoom, Puryko, Sharma and Drs. Blandon and Kirsch from Cleveland Clinic Florida. In addition, seven presentations were given at the Society of Skeletal Radiology, attended by Drs. Schils, Sundaram, Subhas, Sakamoto, Polster, Freire, Winalski, Ilaslan, Duger, Wyse and Mannava.

Special AchievementsMark Sands, MD, Vice Chairman of Quality and Clinical Operations & Section Head, Interventional Radiology, has been inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Radiology. The fellowship is one of the highest honors the ACR

can bestow on a radiologist and is awarded through demonstrated service to the college, radiology, teaching or research.

Mark Baker, MD, received the Imaging Institute’s Teacher of the Year award in recognition of his outstanding instruction and guidance provided to imaging residents throughout the past year.

Drs. Brian Herts and Erick Remer have been promoted to Professor of Radiology within Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner College of Medicine.

Joshua Golub, MD, has been appointed as the Regional Radiology Informatics Officer, serving as the regional radiology physician liaison to Imaging Informatics. A musculoskeletal radiologist at Hillcrest Hospital, Dr. Golub

was instrumental in the implementation of Agfa PACS at Hillcrest and the associated radiologists’ workflow configuration.



New MRI Department Opens in Glickman TowerOn July 29 the Imaging Institute opened the Qb-1 MRI department in the basement of Glickman Tower. The L10 MRI closed in July, after 28 years of service.

During the grand opening event, Gregory Borkowski, MD, Chair, Imaging Institute, performed a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Afterward, MRI technologists provided guided tours of the new facility. “They should be proud” and “what an impressive department” were among the comments heard throughout the evening.

New scanners in Qb-1 will provide exceptional image quality, faster scan times for increased appointment availability and a more comfortable patient experience. In addition, a larger circumference and shorter scanner length will help patients who previously needed sedation or an open MRI.

Vascular Surgery CT Suite Provides Cutting Edge TechnologyA new, state-of-the-art vascular surgery CT suite opened in February in the Cleveland Clinic’s Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute on Main Campus.

The CT suite was designed to provide seamless patient care through the following features:

• A single location for CT scans, lab work and office visits, enabling one-stick visits in which patients can have an IV started and blood draws at the same time.

• A state-of-the-art Siemens Flash CT scanner, enabling precise cardiac imaging and imaging of the aorta in less than 4 seconds with a significantly reduced radiation dose.

• Private hydration rooms for patients with renal insufficiency.

In addition, the design of new CT suite enables radiologists, cardiologists and surgeons to evaluate patients in the same space.

2011 Imaging Institute Employee Engagement FairThe 2nd Annual Imaging Institute Engagement Fair was held in June on the green space between E. 89th and E. 90th streets.

More than 300 Imaging Institute employees – nurses, radiologists, radiologic technologists, patient service representatives, informatics support and others – enjoyed an afternoon of raffles, food and fun.

Employees even had a chance to test their aim as Institute Administrator H. Joseph Parker participated in a dunk tank to raise money for the Imaging Institute Social Fund. (The money is used to plan other Imaging Institute employee events throughout the year.)

During the fair, employees learned about successful engagement plans as well as services offered by Employee Wellness, the Quality & Patient Safety Institute, Total Rewards and more.

United Way Campaign Welcomes DonationsPresident and CEO Toby Cosgrove, MD, kicked off the 2011 United Way campaign on Sept. 28, with a goal of $2 million.
