The Dist. calendar only has the multi-chapter meeting on April 6th in April. In May, is Ch- B's mall show and Spring Fling during Memorial Weekend. June picks up rather quickly with something going on nearly every weekend. Check the Dist calendar for more info. I know our getaway is still 5 months out. Potholes:

It’s almost March and on the east side of the Cascades, snow is still visible on the hills and in the shadows of the ditchesalong the roadside. The rains have stopped for now and the roads are almost dry. Our bikes are checked out, batteries charged, and tires aired up. We head out for a crosstown ride and find a menace everywhere we turn. “POTHOLES” Pothole damage accounts for nearly 500,000 insurance claims every year! So if you’ve been a victim of one, you’re notalone., That’s why it’s important to stay alert, slow down, and keep an eye out, to avoid some costly damage and some serious stress.

General strategies to use whenever in hazardous situations.Leave more space between you and the driver ahead of you. This is just general good driving practice, but it comes in handy avoiding potholes too. After all, the more space between you and the other guy, the more likely you are to notice a pothole and calmly avoid it.

Slow down. Ratchet your speed back a little bit to improve your reaction time. Also, hitting a pothole at lower speeds typically doesn’t cause as much, or as serious damage as hitting one at higher speeds.

Watch out for water. After a rainstorm or snow, potholes can fill with water. That makes them harder to see, and harderto judge how deep they are, which makes them even more mysterious and dangerous! So when in doubt, avoid them.

For a safety discussion during your March or April Chapter gathering, try this.Imagine you are riding on a one lane road and you suddenly see a huge pothole, directly in front of you. What would your natural reaction be?What could you do to handle the situation?

The following suggestions for question 2 were obtained from: 1. Motorcycle Safety Foundation materials (www.nsf.com) 2. GWRRA Rider Education Materials.

First, try to avoid the pothole, which would be the safest course of action. However if swerving or stopping is not an option, attack potholes and every obstacle at a straight on or 90 degree angle if possible. This will help you avoid a loss of control if the wheel gets snagged.

Second (if the pothole is unavoidable), perform a quick brake maneuver, (slowing down your bike as much as possible before you reach the hole) Let off the brake just before entering the pothole and stand up slightly with your knees bent on your pegs, to act as shock absorbers. Lean back slightly to take some of the weight of the front wheel. After entering the pothole, regain your normal riding posture and smoothly increase your speed. Accelerating the bike transfers weightrearward and in turn provides increased traction to the rear wheel.

Any Washington GWRRA member can call or e-mail me directly with questions.concerns with you education needs and levels information.

Please ride safely and pay attention to changing weather conditions.

Assistant District Motorist Awareness: Carl Maier

Start the practice of remembering

During this time of the year we motorcyclist are wishing it would get warmer quicker, as we are longing to getback on our bikes, for a fun ride and take our long awaited first ride of the season. This is also the time to start the practice of remembering, and going through the things we all have heard and read on how to make this first ride of the season a safe one, for us and the others who share the road with us.I have had the opportunity to see a bike on the road the other day, which really was surprising and thought provoking, but at the same time it made me watch this individual do some things, that I thought were not what I would say, were that of a rider who was a good example of a person who was following the practices we want to see as aware motorist. These practices that I am talking about are ones that help other motorist on the road see us, especially at this time of the year when they are not looking for motorcyclist on the road.

Lane position (riding or driving in the lane that you are not in the No Zone). Following distance (following to close) (also in the No Zone). Leave some distance behind other vehicles at stop lights, and signs. Use of turn signals. Wearing of helmets, and clothing that stand out, and can be seen. Watch for other drivers’ blind spots (things in rear windows, and hanging from mirrors). Be Friendly and Courteous, this will help others on the road to look for you.

As Motorist Awareness people, which I hope we all will be, please think of ways to make people want to look for us and see us on the road.We will be having coloring books and crayons, to give to kids, no age restrictions, wherever you may have the opportunity, to help them become more aware of us, therefore this will also help their parents be more aware of us also. Also, I wish to ask you all to hand out the Motor Awareness Bi-Folds to all your friends, old and new, so they will help us in this mission.Thank YouCarl and Kaye Maier

Brakes & Braking:

If you have ever ridden with me I’m sure that you have heard me express my belief that if you are using, or using more than a little brake while cornering or stopping you are just going to damn fast. Slow down and enjoy the ride, we are on a public road not a race track. That being said I finally wore out the brake pads on my 2005 Goldwing bike enough to warrant a pad replacement. I had this marked as a winter project and I was busy studying “how to” tutorials and videos but as I faced the job of laying down on that cold concrete I found myself procrastinating. Having had a good month at work it was not difficult to talk myself into just paying the three hours labor charge and letting Pro Calibre do the work. Since I was getting new tires anyway I did save about $50.00 on the rear tire install as the rear tire was already off to do the brakes. New tires, new brake pads, and brake fluid replacement = money well spent. Now I just need some decent weather to go test them out and DO SOME BRAKING PRACTICE. While studying those “how to” tutorials and videos I discovered a bike load of information on the web dedicated to the science of motorcycle braking. Yeah, braking is a science that needs to be understood and PRACTICED to help keep the rider and co-rider in the seat and off the pavement. Look for words or phrases like … (motorcycle) braking practice, friction, coefficient, dynamics, physics, spacing distance, and did I mention MOTORCYCLE BRAKING PRACTICE. So get out of the lazy boy, fire up the computer, and spend an hour or two studying then when the time comes to ride sharpen those skills with some braking practice. Braking is just one of the many tools to keep us safe and after watching several videos of bikes rear ending cars it became obvious that the riders who practice ATGATT … https://www.motorcyclegearology.com/atgatt-meaning/ ... were the least injured and most of the riders were not paying attention/day dreaming, going too damn fast (speeding), lane splitting, riding while under the influence, riding while mentally distraught, weaving in and out of traffic, and just plain rider stupidity. S__t happens but you can greatly minimize the risks by PRACTICING THOSE SKILLS and learning or refreshing your braking knowledge.

This is a great video on braking distant and G-force. Watch it at least twice. ... http://itsafineline.com/motorcycle-braking-distance-safety/ ...

Here is a good tip for slow speed control using a combination of rear brake and clutch.… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zluOSO-0aU …

Even the best of us can have a brain fart now and again. Notice ATGATT & car stopped on green light.… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbSf5IYUI7E ...

"Eat Well - Ride Longer"Jennifer Bek ~ M.S. - R.N. - CHHC

THE CHINA STUDY AND A PLANT-STRONG DIET

As a health coach, I don’t encourage people to become vegetarian, but I do suggest they eat more vegetablesand perhaps less meat. That could mean simply smaller portions and a “meatless Monday”. There is lots ofscience to back up adopting a plant-strong diet.

T. Colin Campbell, PhD, a researcher who grew up on a dairy farm, spent his early career looking for proof topromote better health by encouraging people to eat more meat, milk and eggs. His research, however, led himto a much different conclusion when he discovered a link between higher protein diets and many diseases, including cancer. He then went on to direct the most comprehensive study of diet, lifestyle and disease everdone. According to Campbell, this project was arranged through Cornell University, Oxford University andthe Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine. The New York Times called it the ”Grand Prix ofEpidemiology”. The findings from his vast amount of research are contained in Campbell’s book, The ChinaStudy, co-authored by his son, Thomas M. Campbell II, M.D.

In the final chapter of The China Study, the authors sum up their findings by stating, “We now have a deep andbroad range of evidence showing that a whole-foods, plant-based diet is best for the heart, best for cancer, bestfor diabetes and autoimmune diseases, and best for our kidneys, bones, eyes and brains.” They point out thatmore research can and should be done, but the idea that plant-based diets can protect us against a wide varietyof chronic diseases can no longer be denied. There are now hundreds of detailed, comprehensive, well-doneresearch studies that point in the same direction. I recommend reading The China Study, or at least skimmingit for your areas of interest.

Even non-vegetarians often want to reduce the amount of red meat they consume but don’t always know whatto cook. Here is a really delicious vegetarian dinner that is easy, healthy and very colorful. If you’re new toquinoa, this is a good way to try it out. If you are a vegan or you are dairy intolerant, substitute soy cheese forthe mozzarella and nutritional yeast for the grated Romano.

32 Extra Miles on a Gold Wing

I hastily read an email about a Bike Ride where we were to meet at Washougal Waterfront Park at 9:00 am. Woke up late got some coffee into the system, got dressed and rushed out to our meeting point 16 miles away. Surprise, Surprise. I was the first to get there! This has never happened before. There are always a few riders atour various meeting points when I get there. Could it be that I am becoming an early bird? Did these guys leave me behind to teach me a lesson about being on time?I called David… no answer… then the machine said, “leave me a message”. Could he be riding? Called Larryand learned that I am at the wrong location. Oops! 16 miles later all is well in Caesar’s world, David is sitting all geared up and looking very dapper and relaxed on his silver Goldwing. A few minutes later, here comes Larry and we are off.Headed east towards Marine Drive, then NW Frontage Road, then unto NW 257 Ave. We crossed Sandy River, passed Lewis & Clark Recreational Site and unto the Historic Columbia River Highway. We will do about 50 % of our ride on this beautiful and scenic route. We passed Dabney State Recreational Area on our right, bore right unto Hurlburt Rd, then left unto SE Little page Rd, with a short stop to take in the awesome view by Portland Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint. The wind was strong, as forecasted, but cold. My brand-new riding pants kept that half nice and warm, but the chest and arms were on the cold side. It turned out that all the vents in my jacket were in the open position.Close them up and all is well again.Pointed our nose to the east, we passed by Ainsworth State Park which was busy. There was a two-minute traffic delay which gave us a moment to enjoy the Waterfall. Continuing on for a few miles we merged unto I-84 East and stayed there until we got to Bridge of the Gods in the Cascade Locks Area. I guess we were too cold for Ice-cream. Hot coffee in our respective Top Cases did it for David and me. I saw Larry eating something he bought from the Coffee Shop.Larry graciously paid the Toll for us and all three of us gingerly crossed the Bridge of the Gods and headed West. That’s the way to home. I did see a Cop in his Car positioned so that he had a clear view of the Toll Booth and the Bridge. It registered with me that Highway 14 is also known as the Evergreen Highway. Another great road for bikers! We enjoyed it for a while until Salmon Falls Junction, which we turned right into. The roads and the scenery were all good, but I particularly enjoyed this part of the ride, in which we passed the Washougal River Salmon Hatchery and up to the majestic Dougan Waterfall. As we turned into Washougal River Rd, we saw an Officer walking toward a ride. We learned later when they met us at the Falls, that the Rider had lost his wallet and cell phone. Luckily it was found. He was a happy camper as he showed us his phone from the Patrol Car as he was being taken back to his bike. He rode with us for part of the way as we headed back. Note to self: “Secure your wallet and phone so that it is impossible to fall off while riding.”All in all, it was a great day, and a beautiful ride in gorgeous country. So, what’s 32 extra miles on a great road on a Goldwing? It’s call fun. Caesar

Weekly RidesBy Larry Hibbs

https:// www. weeklyrides . katlargo .com

Well, spring has sprung and riding season is here. While we did get two rides in January, we didn’t get any in February. But as always we had the Blarney Run in March put on by our friends across the river, Chapter I in Oregon City. It wasn’t raining this year and was actually a great day for aride. If you missed it you missed a good ride. We left with 9 bikes and 2 trikes in the group. Later 3 more caught up to us and we had 14 in the group. It was a pretty large group but we really didn’t have any major problems. Drivers for the most part were pretty courteous and let us all by. It was a fantastic ride and we donated a lot to the food bank. Chapter X came in 3rd out of 7 chapters participating. But the important party is that the coffers are a lot fuller for the food bank. Many Chapters from Washington (A, P, V, X, and Z) supported the Oregon chapter. Washington was represented from A to Z.

Now to April and the weekly rides. There are 5 Tuesdays in April but I have only come up with 4 rides. I figure at least one Tuesday will be rained out, or some other reason not to ride. So if one is missed or skipped it willed be moved to the 5 Tuesday. Anyway, here is what I have planned:

4/2 - We will work our way thru Clark County up to Cougar for lunch and then back again.108 miles and 3.5 hours riding time.Fairground Chevron, KSU @ 10:00 am

4/9 - Head East out 14 with some side roads and lunch in Lyle, then back 14.147 miles and about 4 hours riding time.Washougal Waterfront Park, KSU @ 10:00 am

4/16 - South thru Clackamas County with lunch in Scio193 miles and 4.5 hours riding time.Hometown Buffet, KSU @ 09:00 am

4/23 – Over to Oregon and up to Deer Island and Rainier, the across and on up to Castle Rock for lunch,

then on to Toledo and back down again.196 miles and about 6 hours riding time99 th St Transit Center, KSU @ 09:00 am

4/30 – Nothing scheduled yet. If we skip one of the earlier rides it will be here.

We have some rides already lined up for this year, but if you have any ideas for a ride, or a route or even just someplace to go for lunch then let me know. I am always flexible and can change plans if needed.

As always, hope you can join us on these rides, but if not, take care and ride safe.

FRIENDS-FUN-SAFETY-KNOWLEDGE

April showers bring May flowers? Well here’s hoping we have fewer flowers and no showers in the month of April, I’d rather be riding. As I am writing this article on the 6th day of March it is snowing at my house and onour ride yesterday I noticed the snow level was still quite low on the surrounding country side which translates… bad roadways coming when the snow melts so pay attention to the riders ed article about potholes, I am sure we will find another bumper crop of these pesky fork seal poppers again this year.

Due to lack of participation I will be closing our Facebook page May 1st. If you want to keep it going let me know and I will make you the Administrator. Participation is what makes or breaks a group like ours and I do not beat a dead horse so when there is no longer people willing to participate … well it was a good run. The same goes with GWRRA, participation is what makes it work or not. Attending our meetings, socials, or rides is fun and a great way to make some new friends. Can’t make it because of scheduling conflicts? No problem let Michael or myself know if you want to sponsor a ride or social and we will help make it happen. Have a family member, co-worker, or friend who likes to ride? Give them an invite and bring them along to share in the fun.

Winter grime on my bike and trike … hmmm ... I would happily pay ten bucks to have my bike washed how about you? Just thinking out loud, wonder if we could make the chapter a hundred bucks by having a bike wash? Ten bucks a bike? I will bring this thought up at our next chapter planning meeting, any input/ideas? Twenty members washing ten bikes sounds doable and fun. Participation really is easy and can be a lot of fun.
