Greetings!

I hope everyone is surviving and enjoying the hot July weare experiencing this year. The local weather man has re-ported that we are in our 19th day of 90 degree temperatures. It's like living down south and watching the grass turn brown. If you've been out riding, I hope you are keeping cool and hy-drated. Generally in this area we invest in clothing to keep uswarm. However, this year keeping cool was the focus. Thanks for the technology, we can purchase it all, stay cooland ride safe.

Keep an eye on those large objects that turn in front of us,pass groups on the wrong side or talk/text on phones whiledriving. Some don't realize, some are dumb and a few arereal ------ enough said.

This paragraph is for you readers who don't belong to anorganization/chapter. Our Chapter, GWRRA NY -Chapter Tcares about you. We announce our Rider Education courses, tell you about upcoming events and/or planned rides, and giveback to our local communities. While we're noting this for ourmembers and you, we are meeting great new friends and hav-ing a lot of fun. We post our events/rides to give you someideas for fun, opportunities to improve your riding skills and toeducate the public to enhance our safety and help remove pre-conceived images of bikers. Our Chapter, Chapter T, will notask you to volunteer all your free time. We know you havefamilies and life responsibilities. You won't have to partici-pate in all events or join every ride. If you miss something -you are not out. You don't have to come to our monthly gath-erings (meetings) nor purchase the 50:50 tickets to supportChapter functions. But the opportunities are there. It's 'your'choice and you could meet like-minded friends and have funtoo. We'd love to meet you and have you come back. Life istoo short. A friend of mine who is no longer with us, used totell me that 'We're not here for a long time, but we're here for agood time."

Now let me tell you about some of our fun events/ridesthis past month that you could have chosen to participate in.Let down your guard and try us out. Start by coming to oneof our gatherings.

Wing Ding at Fort Wayne, Indiana: Do you like to ride? Imean really ride? Well, there were 8 members of Chapter Twho rode to Indiana. Some have experience riding great dis-tances. They can assist in the planning, mechanical problemsand provide camaraderie. Some can enhance the fun via plan-

Chapter T’s Director’s

Cornerning scenic routes. At the week long convention the choicesare yours - look at new products for your bike, attend riderimprovement classes (to reduce insurance), go on guided tours, attend bike parades, etc.

Ice Cream Rides: Every Thursday we meet at variousplaces to savior our favorite treats. Some are close - othersrequire saddle time. We always seem to have a laugh or twoin between the bites of ice cream. It's a relaxed time to shareour individual rides, swap ideas, joke around or just have somegood licking fun. Check the website for details with maps. This is a good relaxed way to see and meet some chaptermembers.

Chapter K from Canada: On 7/14/2012 members of Chap-ter K from Canada rode down to Denny's in Watertown, NY.We, Chapter T, rode up to Watertown and a total of 30 mem-bers from the two chapters met for lunch, discussion and a lotof laughs. Talk about meeting new friends and having fun! Ithought some of our members could tell stories in a humorousway...well, let me tell you- those folks are fun! We also hadtwo GWRRA members from Massena, NY who saw our gettogether posted ride down and join us too. Next year's get to-gether should be funner!

Ride for Kids: Several members from Chapter T gaveback to the community on 7/15/2012 with the annual Ride forKids event. Some of our members also volunteered their ser-vices in helping with the operation of this event. Two ofChapter T members, Jim and Sharon Learned took 1st place incollecting the most donations for the ride, and our Chaptercame in 2nd place. Nice job Jim & Sharon and thank you toour Chapter members for their generosity.

Chapter T Annual Picnic: Have you ever ridden throughForest Park in Camden, NY? If not, put this on your ride list. You can also visit the Veteran's Memorial to honor fallen sol-diers from Oneida County who died for us which is down bythe river in the village of Camden. We had 28 members attendour annual picnic with some great food and fun.

Breakfast with Chapter D: On 7/28 we had a breakfast gettogether with our nearby friends of Chapter D. This event washeld at the Vienna Hotel where the food is first rate.

If some of the rides/events sound fun to you, please checkout our website to see what's scheduled for August.

Don't forget the NY/NJ Bi-State Convention being heldAugust 16th - 18th in Mt. Olive, New Jersey.

Ride Safe,

Dave & Linda

Limitsby Jackie Vaughan

Everything in life has limits. When we were young, we hadbedtimes that were far too early, especially on a summer night,or when something good was on TV. As we got older, curfewsand the frustrations of limited spending money chafed us. Wewere pretty much controlled by how often and how long wecould borrow the car. Still, we stretched and broke the limitswith only minor repercussions.

As riders we have limits, too, and these, unlike legal limitssuch as speed and right-of-way, can only be stretched so far be-fore the consequences become very dire indeed. These limits areour personal limits, the limits of our machines, and the limits ofour environment. To ride safely, we must know these limits andride within them. This would be a fairly easy task if the limitswere fixed and separate. However, they are each highly variableand intertwined so that one can affect the others.

Personal limits change constantly. There are the slow, butperceptible signs of aging when we finally don glasses thateventually give way to bifocals and when hearing dims. As wereach the over-the-hill age of 40, night vision begins to lessen. With any luck, skill and experience provide compensation.

Not even the young among us are immune to personal limits. We are all susceptible. These limits can be imposed by physicalconditions such as fatigue or emotion or by medications, bothover-the counter and prescription. New prescriptions can haveunexpected side effects, and drug interactions can produce terri-fying reactions. Medications should be carefully discussed withdoctor and pharmacist before we ride. Getting all prescriptionsfilled at the same pharmacy lessens the chance of a conflict oroverdose not being spotted. Recreational drugs create dangersthat should be obvious.

Over-the-counter drugs frequently pose problems. Almostevery label on allergy medications carries the warning, “Maycause drowsiness. Do not operate heavy machinery while takingthis medication.” By heavy machinery they don’t mean bulldoz-ers or tanks. They mean cars and trucks and motorcycles andriding lawnmowers and anything else where a drowsy, dizzy oruncoordinated operator could have an accident. Almost everyskill needed to safely operate a motorcycle is affected by suchmedicines.

Even when we’re at our physical best, our motorcycles poselimits. Obvious ones are type and power. A fully loaded touringbike is not made to ride over sand dunes at the beach, nor is atwo-up 125-cc bike safe on the interstate. Even the best-maintained bike is subject to routine wear and tear. New tires areslick until the mold release wears off. Cheap tires can offer poortraction under even optimum conditions. Brake pads wear. Apoorly cared for bike is two-wheeled disaster.

Even when our bikes and we are in tip-top condition, the en-vironment can sharply define our limits. A twisty back road is ajoy on a warm sunshiny day. The same road on a cold, wet nightis a rider’s nightmare. Cold can dull our reflexes and slow ourreaction times. Numbed hands operate controls more slowly andwith less feedback, making full-braking stops less effective. Na-ture can brush a road with sand or mist it with rain or fog. Ouronly choice is to slow down and to avoid any sudden changes inspeed or direction. We should never be so dumb that we don’trealize it is time to get off the road.

Our limits, the limits of our machines, and natural limits, allcombined in endless permutations, are part of the challenge ofmotorcycling. Knowing these limits and riding within them arepart of the responsibility of motorcycling. And that is part of thejoy of motorcycling.
