CLASS SPOTLIGHTS

Our Art Parent Association has planned some exciting artist visits!

On April 3, Brian Rutenberg will be visiting our Junior and Senior Advanced Painting Students.

Widely considered to be one of the finest American painters of his generation, Brian Rutenberg has spent 40 years honing a distinctive method of compressing the rich color and form of his native coastal South Carolina into complex landscape paintings that imbue material reality with a deep sense of place.

He is a Fulbright Scholar, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow, a Basil Alkazzi USA Award recipient, an Irish Museum of Modern Art visiting artist program participant, and has had over two hundred exhibitions throughout North America.

Click here for more information on Brian.

On April 12th, Dave Kim the Potter will be visiting Ceramics classes.

Dave Kim the Potter uses direct influence from his cultural heritage as a Korean to apply developed aesthetics to his functional pottery. Currently working in Brooklyn, NY, he believes that creating historic Korean pottery preserves a culture that is slowly dissipating by the modern society.

Each pottery Kim creates collects elements of form, decoration, color and material from various traditional Korean pottery styles such as Sang-gam(Korean inlay technique), Baek-ja(porcelain-ware typically known for Moonjars), or Bun-cheong(technique that uses stamps).

Producing work that has been done for centuries, Kim still challenges the limits of what can be done by following the ways of Korean pottery. His experimental interest has also enabled him to create new bodies of work that has strayed away from the tradition yet very grounded at the core of what Korean pottery is; simplicity that represents natural, unpretentious beauty. Click here for more information on Kim.

Silhouettes

Fashion class began the semester investigating how silhouettes are used in clothing design to alter the body and create compositional focal points in a design. To explore this idea further, students designed an outfit on a model

of their choice, and cut out the design. Then, each artist photographed their artwork around the city to explore what patterns, textures, and everyday settings they could find that bring their designs to life.
