Mercy Sunday Catholic Tradition

Who, in their right mind, would want to be humiliated? Try to imagine something that would be humiliat-ing to you. What would do when we are humiliated? Most people are tempted to seek ways to avoid humiliation. Some become deeply hurt as a result. Others become angry and defensive. And though the source of one's humiliation may not be fair, it's important to understand that humiliations can be-come an invitation to the deepest depths of God's grace and Mercy. Humiliation has the potential to produce humility. This important virtue will enable us to rely solely upon God, seek consolation and peace only from Him, and allow Him and His holy Will to be the source of our joy in life. Nothing could be better for the soul than the humility that comes from humiliations (See Diary #593). What is it that humbles you the most? What wounds your pride and causes you to be angry or defen-sive? What do you stew over and think about obsessively? If something comes to mind, then this may be something very specific that the Lord wishes to turn into a source of grace and Mercy. Everything has the potential to be turned into grace by our Lord. He truly is that All-Powerful. Identify that which wounds your pride the most and try to look at it from a new perspective, letting the Lord turn it into a source of grace.

Universal: That small farmers may receive a just reward for their precious labor.

Evangelization: That Christians in Africa may give witness to love and faith in Jesus Christ amid politi-cal-religious conflicts.

JOINING THE COMPANY OF BELIEVERS What will help you to believe? Today’s scripture readings tell of faith and doubt. They offer stories “recorded to help you believe,” as the passage from John’s Gospel (20:31) remarks today. There is an urgency about this. On this Second Sunday of Easter we are challenged to join the company of believers—countless men and women who witnessed the power of the apostles’ faith. There is no doubt that this power comes from Jesus Christ. The second reading, from the book of Revelation, reports John’s mystical vision of the Son of Man, who proclaims, “Once I was dead, but now I live” (Revelation 1:18). The Gos-pel gathers everyone but Thomas to see the Risen Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit from him. Like Thomas, we who have come along later must have faith so that we can have life.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — The apostles perform signs and wonders. Many are added to their numbers (Acts 5:12-16).

Psalm — Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118).

Second Reading — John, caught up in the spirit, seess the glo-rified Lord, the first and last, the one who lives (Rev. 1:9-19).

Gospel — The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace and the Spirit. The absent Thomas does not believe the others (John 20:19-31).
