We often say God is the most important, or one of the most important, relationships in our life. Is that true? If so, think about how much one-on-one time is spent on that relationship. Just thinking about prayer in this way helps us over come the barrier of “I’m too busy.” It helps us to recognize our priorities, which can make us want to spend some time with God. Often we have unrealistic expectations about how much time we will spend in prayer. It is not uncommon to set goals that are out of line with what we are realistically able to do or at least able to do at the start.

So first, try being reasonable. Start with ten minutes in the morning or evening. Surely you can spare that for the Creator of the Universe, your Lord and best friend! It needn’t be anything more than that, to begin with. You don’t run a mara- thon before you’ve been able to run around the block.

Think about it, again, as a personal relationship. If a friend you hadn’t heard from in years called and said, “Hi! Can we talk for just ten minutes? I’d love to catch up!” wouldn’t you be grateful? Think of God welcoming your prayer like that. God will enjoy those ten minutes. Knowing that may help you to enjoy them too.

There’s no one way or right way to get started again. Whatever works for you is best. Read a Psalm to start the day; the daily Mass readings, pray about God’s will for you as you reflect on your calendar each day. Stop in and visit the church or pray on a park bench. Say the Hail Mary, the Rosary or a devotion that you find helpful. Keeping in touch is the point.

Pope Francis’ April Intentions

Universal: That small farmers may receive a just reward for their precious labor.

Evangelization: That Christians in Africa may give witness to love and faith in Jesus Christ amid politi-cal-religious conflicts.

Congratulations to all who made their Confirmation on March 29th: Hannah, Louie, Langston, Michael, Mitch and Tommy.

REDEMPTION Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested? He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John’s vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation shows us the company we keep when we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, “countless in number” from “heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe” (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and majesty de-scribed in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and piti-ful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion. What a relief that we can all be redeemed so completely!

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Brought before the Sanhedrin, the apos-tles give witness to Jesus Christ. (Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41). Psalm — I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading — In his vision John sees all in heaven and on earth give honor and glory to the one on the throne and to the Lamb (Revelation 5:11-14).

Gospel — Jesus appears to the disciples by the sea of Ti-berias (John 21:1-19).
