Bless, O Lord, we pray, Thy congregation; Bless each home and family; Bless the youth, the rising generation; Bless the children dear to Thee; Bless Thy servants, grant them help and favor; Thee to glorify be their endeavor. Lord, on Thee we humbly call; Let Thy blessing rest on all.

We who here together are assembled, Joining hearts and hands in one, Bind ourselves with love that’s undissembled

Christ to love and serve alone; O may our imperfect songs and praises Be well-pleasing unto Thee, Lord Jesus, Say, “My peace I leave with you.” Amen, Amen, be it so.

Liturgy for Moravian Music Sunday

O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our

salvation!

Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful

noise to Him with songs of praise!

Mit Freuden Zart

Sing praise to God who reigns above,

The God of all creation,

The God of power, the God of love,

The God of our salvation.

My soul with comfort rich He fills,

And every grief He gently stills:

To God all praise and glory!

Let us give thanks to the Father, who has enabled us to share in the

inheritance of the saints in light.

He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into

the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the

forgiveness of sins.

In Him all things in heaven and on earth were created.

He Himself is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

Let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, to which indeed we were called in

the one body.

Above all, may we clothe ourselves with love, which binds everything

together in perfect harmony.

151 I

Lord Jesus, you are worthy for all on earth to praise;

Our hymns in glad thanksgiving in gratitude we raise,

For all you did on Calv’ry when suffering on the tree –

The world from sin’s dominion most wondrously set free.

And I, unworthy sinner when kneeling at your feet,

Can see that my redemption in you is now complete:

In faith I now would serve you through all my earthly days,

And then in heav’nly glory my hallelujahs raise.

Most gracious God, we give you thanks for every good gift. On this day we

especially thank you for your creative gifts to us, which cause us to enrich our

lives through science and art, literature and drama, words and music.

For you, O Lord, have made us glad by your works; at the works of your

hands we sing for joy.

We thank you for your gifts to the Moravian Church: devotion to the Saviour,

simplicity, our strong sense of community and fellowship, and our

longstanding dedication to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.

We thank you for our musical heritage, through which we draw closer

to you and to one another.

Inspire and bless those who write and compose, those who play instruments

and those who sing, and those who lead and teach.

As you have helped us through the centuries to sing our faith, so move

within each one of us today, that all our gifts may unite in your service.

May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant us to live in harmony

with one another, in accordance with Jesus Christ.

In whose holy name we pray. Amen.

185 A

Lamb of God, you shall remain forever

Of our songs the only theme;

For your boundless love, your grace and favor,

We will praise your saving name;

That for our transgressions you were wounded

Shall by us in nobler strains be sounded,

When we, perfected in love,

Once shall join the church above.

Lord Jesus, you are worthy ©Albert H. Frank. Used by permission

The Gifts of Moravian Music

In our Moravian musical heritage, we see many examples of the fact that one need not be a “professional” musician in order to enrich the musical life of one’s own time and of generations yet to come. Even today, you know people who can play several different instruments, and sing, and can lead a group of musicians, and have helped to inspire young people in learning music and playing and singing to the glory of God. And for most of these people, music isn’t their “day job” – it is something they do for love of their Lord and God’s people. God has given to us in the Moravian Church a heart for music, and special gifts in composing music, writing words, and singing and playing from that heart. We are thankful that God gave us this gift, which can draw us closer to one another and to our God. Through music, may we learn to love one another more fully, and in so doing, to love our Saviour more deeply. Today we thank God for these gifts of music given to Moravians over the centuries and especially today. Many are writing hymn texts and music, sacred songs, anthems, and instrumental music for use in our congregations, music which speaks to our current circumstances and to the never-failing love of God in Christ. The Moravian Music Foundation publishes anthems in the Moravian Star Anthem Series, including many by living composers. For information about sponsoring a publication in honor or in memory of a loved one, please contact either office listed below. See our website for a complete listing of recordings and publications, and more information about the gifts of Moravian music and the work of the Moravian Music Foundation.

Christian hearts in love united, Seek alone in Jesus rest; Has He not your love excited? Then let love inspire each breast. Members on our Head depending, Lights reflecting Him, our Sun, Brethren His commands attending, We in Him, our Lord, are one. Come then, come, O flock of Jesus, Covenant with Him anew; Unto Him, Who conquered for us, Pledge we love and service true; And should our love’s union holy Firmly linked no more remain, Wait ye at His footstool lowly, Till He draw it close again. Grant, Lord, that with Thy direction, “Love each other,” we comply, Aiming with unfeigned affection Thy love to exemplify; Let our mutual love be glowing; Thus will all men plainly see That we, as on one stem growing, Living branches are in Thee.

O that such may be our union

As Thine with the Father is. And not one of our communion E’er forsake the path of bliss; May our light ‘fore men with brightness From Thy light reflected shine; Thus the world will bear us witness

That we, Lord, are truly Thine.

Lord, your praise we sing,

Our glad thanks we bring,

For your favor, gracious Saviour.

Lord, your praise we sing.

You loved us on earth

From your wondrous birth;

Healing, teaching, seeking, reaching;

You loved us on earth.

You o’er-came the foe

So that we might go

On to heaven, cleansed, forgiven.

You o’er-came the foe.

Jesus, here we meet;

In your name we greet

Ancient story, hopes of glory.

Jesus, here we meet.

Lord, be near us here

Our sad lives to cheer;

Stand beside us, ever guide us,

Lord, be near us here.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Mr. David Blum Children are invited to go to Children’s Church or back to their seat.

Psalm 95 (Read Responsively)

O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of salvation! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed. O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

SINGSTUNDE

Singstunde is a German word meaning literally “singing hour.” It was originated in Herrnhut by Count Zinzendorf in the early 1700’s. On such an occasion Scripture was read and then appropriate hymns were sung to express the truths taught in the Scripture. No sermon or address was given, because the message was brought forth by the words in the hymns. Moravians love to sing and it has often been said that we sing our faith and that our theology is best expressed in our hymns.

Gaudeamus Pariter

Join we all with one accord; Praise we all our common Lord; For we all have heard His voice, All have made His will our choice. Join we with the saints of old, No more strangers in the fold, One the Shepherd who us sought, One the flock His blood has bought.

One our Master, one alone, None but Christ as Lord we own; “brethren of His law” are we – “As I loved you, so love ye.” Branches we in Christ, the Vine, Living by His life divine; As the Father with the Son, So, in Christ, we all are one.

One the name in which we pray, One our Savior day by day;

With one cup and with one bread Thus one cov’nant way we tread.

One in spirit, one in life, One amid earth’s frequent strife,

One in faith and one in love, One in hope of heav’n above.

They who Jesus’ followers are

And enjoy His faithful care,

By a mutual, hearty love

Their belief in Jesus prove.

By your reconciling love

Ev’ry stumbling block remove;

Each to each unite, endear;

Come, and spread your banner here.

Let us each for others care,

Each another’s burden bear,

To your church a pattern give,

Showing how believers live.

May it to the world appear

That we your disciples are

By our loving mutually,

By our Christian unity.

ANTHEM O The Blessedness Is Great Bechler

Ingham

What splendid rays of truth and grace,

All other light excelling!

This I know when He in love

Makes my heart His dwelling!

He blesses me so sensibly

That though I’m poor and lowly,

Yet in Him I can rejoice

As my Saviour holy.

Had I the grace to seek His face

In any trying hour!

Help from none will be withhold

Who implores His power.

Therefore I pray, while here I stay

And look to Him with yearning:

Fixed in Him may I abide,

Kept forever turning.
