machines: all of these visionary topicsneed a quantum leap in the efficiency, service scope and availability of mobilecommunication infrastructure andnetworks. Fraunhofer FOKUS andFraunhofer HHI are contributing withtheir comprehensive know-how andsolutions to a consortium ofmanufacturers, carriers and researchinstitutions, who are working onprototypes for early-stage 5Gcommunications infrastructure andfeatures, and are aiming to implementthese into the 5G Berlin test bed.

5G Playground: Accelerating theadoption of 5GFraunhofer FOKUS NGNI competencecenter is proud to announce its 5GPlayground.The 5G Playground is an R&D commonground were researchers andengineers, around the world, are ableto build together the future 5Genvironment. It allows forinteroperability testing, and for theevaluation, validation anddemonstration of their ideas, solutionsand prototypes. The playgroundconsists of a comprehensive set of toolkits addressing the most noveltechnological advances towards 5G.Fraunhofer FOKUS is activelysearching for partners from operatorsand vendors, as well as academicpartners interested in participating inthe build-up of the emerging 5Gecosystem. Whether you aredeveloping a future element of the 5Gsolution, envisioning a new concept oreven a novel use case, the 5GPlayground is the right place tovalidate, demonstrate and realize yourprojects or solutions. The following Toolkits are part of the5G Playground:

New Toolkit: Open5G-MTC: Toolkit forhigh number of devicesFraunhofer FOKUS NGNI competencecenter is very happy to present a newtoolkit as part of its 5G Playground testingenvironment.Within the 5G environment a huge numberof devices will be connected to thenetwork, using different communicationrequirements (delay/capacity), differentcommunication patterns (on exceptionalevents, regular, continuous), differentreliability requirements and informationtrust levels. Easy remotemanagement/administration/calibration willalso be needed.

Open5GMTC is a practical implementationbased on ETSI M2M, oneM2M and OMALWM2M standards with the main target ofachieving more flexibility, programmability, resilience, faster response and securitywithin a 5G environment for the Machine toMachine (M2M) and Internet of Things(IOT) communication.More detail here: Open5G-MTCContact:[email protected]

Open5GCore: EnhancedBenchmarking As part of the Open5GCoredevelopments, the benchmarking toolas well as the correspondent corenetwork has been extended to supportevaluation and assessment ofhandover procedures, opening the waytowards a comprehensive qualitativeevaluation of different core networksolutions, concepts and prototypes.Additionally, the benchmarking tool canbe used for evaluating the opportunity

of deploying mobile networkcomponents on top of cloudinfrastructures.More information on the Open5GCoreToolkit here: www.open5gcore.orgContact: [email protected]

OpenSDNCore: Service FunctionChaining (SFC)OpenSDNCore network functionalitywas extended with a Service FunctionChaining (SFC) solution inspired by theIETF standards. The SFC solutionenables the dynamic deployment ofvirtual network functions acrossmultiple data centers and constitutesthe basis of further research in the areaof cloud network elasticity, resilience, load balancing and high availability.More information on the OpenSDNCoreToolkit here: www.opensdncore.orgContact: [email protected]

OpenMTC presents at Internet of theThings Applications Europe 2015:Open platforms as key enabler fordeveloping IoT applicationsThe OpenMTC team will present at theInternet of the Things ApplicationsEurope 2015. This event will be held atthe Estrel Berlin Convention Center,April 27-28th 2015. The conferencewill assess various IoT business casesand present different approaches thatpave the way for enabling innovationsbased on M2M and IoT open platforms. Moreover, several success stories andprototypes developed at FraunhoferFOKUS based on the OpenMTC will bepresented and demonstrated.

OpenMTC New Feature Available!Integration with Protocol Adapter forHealth devices in the FI-STARprojectThe Health Device Profile (HDP)Bluetooth Device Adapter is acomponent of the protocol adapter, which handles Android devicessupporting the Bluetooth HDP as wellas the Zephyr BioHarness. Theseprotocols enable healthcare and fitnessdevice usage models, e.g. runnersusing biosensors for monitoring fitnessgoals, a chronic condition patient with abiosensor, etc. These devices also implement the ISO11073 family standards promoted bythe Continua Alliance. This work was carried out with thesupport of the FI-STAR project (“FutureInternet Social and TechnologicalAlignment Research”), an integratedproject funded by the EuropeanCommission through the 7th ICT -Framework Program (318389).More information: IoT Laboratoryhttps://github.com/theIoTLab and FI-STAR http://fistar.eu

OpenMTC and OpenSDNCoreintegration M2M back-end as aServiceFraunhofer FOKUS announces theintegration of two of its most powerfulplatforms: The Open Machine TypeCommunications (OpenMTC) platformand the Open Software DefinedNetworking Core (OpenSDNCore)platform.OpenSDNCore is a practicalimplementation of the future networkevolution paradigms, realizing NetworkFunctions Virtualization (NFV) andSoftware Defined Network (SDN)concepts, providing early prototyping ofa service enablement platform on top ofcommon infrastructure components. This integration enables a dynamiccloud deployment of M2M servicesusing OpenMTC based onOpenSDNCore. M2M back-end as aService is already being used within theSmart City TRESCIMO testbeds (Test-beds for Reliable Smart City Machineto Machine Communication).Learn more at www.opensdncore.organd www.trescimo.eu
