WORDS FROM
THE CHAIRS
We are pleased to welcome experts from all over the world to
present latest developments and updates. The event will take
place over two-days, offering tutorials, workshops and a social
event on day one and a full day conference on day two.
Newest products and prototypes from sponsors, partners and
demos by Fraunhofer FOKUS will be shown in the exhibition
area and during the Lab Tours on both days. The agenda lists
around 45 presentations for the two days given by experts
from all over the world on the hottest topics in broadband-
broadcast convergence and multi-screen service provision.
This event will be of great interest to international experts in
web and media technologies who are seeking and exchanging
the latest technical information and hands on experience of
multiscreen content and applications.
We hope you will enjoy the 4th FOKUS Media Web Symposium
2014 and wish you very interesting and fruitful two days.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Stephan Steglich & Dr. Stefan Arbanowski
and the entire FOKUS team
Dear FOKUS Family and Friends,
Ladies and Gentlemen
We are proud to welcome you to the 4th FOKUS Media Web
Symposium on May 8-9, 2014. The fourth symposium will build
on the success of previous FOKUS workshops and will address
applications, content and technologies for a multiscreen world.
“Screens, screens, screens – Multiscreen moves Mainstream"
is the motto of the entire symposium as it is for the demo and
exhibition slots.
“Multiscreen” is certainly one of the hottest keywords this
year. It is not just Phones that are Smart and Connected;
Tablets, Connected Cars, Smart TVs and Smart Watches are all
on the rise. Convergence is coming. This convergence is not
just technical, but represents a convergence and change of
industries. The Internet has already been revolutionizing the
Media industry. The new technologies do not only disrupt the
traditional markets with new content delivery models (such as
broadband vs. broadcast), but are also the driving force behind
the evolution of the consumer electronics landscape, where
new features such as VoD, shift TV, and mobile consumption
are offered to consumers. This powerful mix of revolutionary
and evolutionary forces is now starting to impact us ubiqui-
tously in any area of our life.

Demo 1
FAMIUM Multiscreen
TV sets and companion devices (e.g, smartphones, tablets,
watches etc.) have rised above their original purpose and are
now playing together an important role in multi-screen
context. Also TVs and companion devices are used at the
same time quite often especially in home environments.
FAMIUM Multiscreen provides technologies to connect
multiple screens together so that applications can make use of
and interact directly with all accessible screens. As a result,
applications can provide a better user experience and create a
richer content presentation to the user: your TV informs you
about available additional content to the TV program you are
just watching. A specific notification is sent to your mobile or
tablet automatically and you can access the content just by
clicking on the notification. This is possible using HbbTV on TV
and FAMIUM.browser on your mobile device conforming
W3C standard: Webscreens.
Demo 2
FAMIUM DASH on Video Wall
Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH) is the
upcoming streaming standard for the Web and will harmonize
Internet based video delivery among various end systems. Our
FAMIUM.wall solution uses DASH to stream one videos to
many clients keeping the playback completely synchronized
between all screens. We demonstrate to stream a 4k video
- split in four or nine HD videos - playing synchronously across
the sceens.
LAB TOUR — FOKUS DEMONSTRATIONS
15
Demo 3
FAMIUM DRM
Commercial solutions for playing protected content in a
browser require a plug-in.
Until now we demonstrate a solution which is based on the
upcoming W3C standards Media Source Extensions (MSE) and
Encrypted Media Extensions (EME). The FAMIUM.browser
which supports these standards is playing back Microsoft
PlayReady DRM-protected videos. The demonstration also
visualises the process of key exchange and decryption
between browser, CDM and CDMI. The CDMI is an open
interface for accessing a platform DRM Content Decryption
Module (CDM) and is not specific to PlayReady, Microsoft’s
DRM. It can be used by a User-agent to expose CDM
functionality as specified by the W3C HTML Encrypted Media
Extensions without licensing DRM technology.
Demo 4
FAMIUM Hands on e2e DASH and DRM
During this demonstration we introduce our tool chain for
DASH and DRM media creation and streaming. The
demonstration features video capturing followed by DASH
conversion / segmentation and protection by PlayReady
Microsoft DRM. You will see how to operate our tools to
create PlayReady protected DASH content to be streamed by
an HTTP-Server. It offers benefits for the consumption by
State-of-the-art mobile and fixed devices.

HTML5 for Multiscreen
We propose a technology to divide/allocate web content
elements among devices in accordance with user situation
changes. The demo will show you how the elements are freely
transferred among smartphones, tablet devices, and television
sets when user situations are changed. Users can configure
their systems in a „My Style“ manner that suits their
preferences and the devices they want to use.
Sharing disaster information under Internet disconnection:
To support evacuation centers without Internet access due to
a disaster, our multiscreen collaboration realizes resilient
information sharing that allows evacuees to share disaster
information among devises with a HTML5 browser by
connecting to a local Wi-Fi router and launching the browser.
The demo system shares information among the centers
through the movement of people.

DASH content protection with PlayReady
VoD and Live TV premium content to Windows, Android and
iOS devices, using MPEG-DASH
Driving DASH industry adoption for VoD and Live TV premium
content protection: Starting from Common Encryption applied
to MPEG-DASH we are able to playback streamed content in
the browser without plugins via W3C Media Source Extensions
and Encrypted Media Extensions and offer an HTML5 integra-
tion via EME and MSE. The Microsoft’s open specification of a
Content Decryption Module Interface (CDMi) enables abstrac-
tion of the EME to the DRM system on platform level in an
interoperable way. This demo showcases the reference
implementation of the CDMi together with the Microsoft
PlayReady DRM to playback DRM-protected media content on
a set top box-like Unix environment using a Chromium browser
with an integrated PlayReady CDM.

MEDIA BROADCAST
multithek
The hybrid portal – an innovative platform for HbbTV
Prototyping, Validation and Demo
multithek combines broadcast and broadband. The hybrid
approach by MEDIA BROADCAST enables OTT-programs and
services complimentary to the DTT offering. The HbbTV-based
portal is shown as a separate channel on the TV set. Broadcast
and IP contents are presented in a truly seamless way: by
listing the portal and additional IP-based linear programs in
the EPG. The user selects both broadcast and IP channels via
the channel buttons on the remote. Navigation on the portal
is based on the 5-button principle – guiding the user and
offering OTT content without overloading.
Oracle
Media & Entertainment
Media Commerce with MPEG DASH
The Oracle Media Commerce is shifting the complexity from
IT, moving it out of the enterprise by engineering hardware
and software to work together – in the cloud and in the data
center.
The Oracle Media Commerce solution enables personalized,
content-led commerce, totally-flexible transactions and
seamless customer journeys. This includes the integration with
Fraunhofer MPEG DASH streaming solutions.

FIcontent
Cutting edge ICT platforms
Future media Internet for large-scale content experimentation
(FIcontent) is a project that will transform the perception of,
and possibilities for, the next generation internet. With inputs
from five important content areas, spanning the future uses of
AV, games, Web, metadata and user generated content,
demonstrating usage beyond current state of the art, we have
assembled a consortium including major content providers,
games companies, hardware vendors, network operators,
broadcasters, research institutes and academia to propose a
number of novel and inventive scenarios for new forms of
content. The Future Internet architecture and the enablers
necessary to implement FIcontent use cases will be
showcased.

Live DASH transcoding on low-budget Raspberry Pis
Raspberry Pis are low-budget devices that leverage hardware
capabilities for encoding and decoding. Based on our tool
chain for DASH and DRM content creation, we created
specific extended builds that can be run on Raspberry Pis to
generate live and on-demand content. We showcase live
transcoding and segmentation of a plugged camera. The
generated DASH output will be multi-bitrate audio and video.
The whole architecture consists of mutliple Pis that are
interconnected and jointly create mutliple bitrate
representations of the input signal.
