for convergence of multiple dedicated test sites with heterogeneous radio and edge network characteristics taking advantage of the practical development of the core control and management plane in the Fraunhofer FOKUSOpen5GCore (www.open5gcore.net), OpenSDNCore (www.opensdncore.org) and open5GMTC toolkits.More information available at:http://www.5g-berlin.de

OpenSDNCore Rel. 2 is availableFraunhofer FOKUS has launched OpenSDNCore Rel. 2 during the two days of the FUSECO Forum 2014. OpenSDNCore Rel. 2 continues the path towards a comprehensive NFV/SDN environment, following both the Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) and Software Defined Networks (SDN) paradigms. Built on top of the Rel. 1, which already included a network orchestrator on top of OpenStack and a set of telco oriented SDN componets, Rel. 2 includes support for:

distributed infrastructures comprised of multiple cloud nodes; the interaction with physical radio base stations;auto scaling;flow based QoS for inter-cloud networking communication.

Open5GCore Rel. 1Following the worldwide success of OpenEPC as a practical implementation addressing laboratory testbeds, Fraunhofer FOKUS has launched the Open5GCore toolkit (www.open5gcore.net), representing the research successor of the OpenEPC towards the 5G environments. Open5GCore mirrors the current stage of the advances towards 5G and represents the fundamental testbed functionality for demonstrations, functional testing and benchmarking beyond LTE/EPC. Open5GCore includes a relevant OpenEPC Rel. 5 sub-package for supporting LTE and WiFi:

Core network advancements towards flat and edge network architectures, control-data plane split, control functionality co-location, runtime high flexibility, single core network hopping;

LTE/5G radio signaling protocol stack implementation, providing the interconnection between radio research and core networks;Benchmarking tool for quantitative measurements of the core network features – with different subscriber patterns and monitoring mechanisms.

Open5GCore was already successfully delivered to some selected customers.For more information please check:www.open5gcore.net or contact us [email protected]

Open5GMTC Pre-Rel. 1Open5GMTC represents the toolkit which will integrate the end devices into the overall research activities. Current version of the Open5GMTC, as demonstrated at the FFF14, represents a first step towards testbeds including a large number of connected devices.Through this, both the human and M2M communications can benefit from relevant quantitative evaluations. Open5GMTC was designed from the initial stage to sustain communication for thousands of devices. It includes the functionality for:

Device management, implemented using OMA DM and LW M2M;Connectivity and transport management for virtualised network infrastructures;Cost effective support for a large number of devices, testing and evaluation;Integration with OpenMTC for M2M protocols;Simple visualization of the highly complex environment.

MCN Industry Track Demo The Mobile Cloud Networking project was successfully presented to a large audience, showing an end-to-end virtual mobile service offering including radio, core network and applications. The demonstration showed the technical proof-of concept that end-to-end virtual services can be composed in an efficient fashion and can run on

Page 8: The Fraunhofer FOKUS Competence Center NGNI (Next Generation Network …€¦ · NFV/SDN environment, following both the Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) and Software Defined

The OpenMTC has been announced at the FOKUS FUSECO Forum in November 13 – 14. The OpenMTC release 4 is aligned with oneM2M specification and support new features.

OpenMTC team at oneM2M Showcase in ETSI workshopThe OpenMTC team showed at the ETSI oneM2M showcase workshop 9 – 11 December 2014 in SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS, FRANCE, the recent OpenMTC features capabilities by providing interoperability between the existing ETSI M2M and emerging oneM2M standard. The demo was aspart of an interconnected different IoT platforms and devices showcase together with KETI, Convida Wireless, NEC, SKT and nTels . The openness and modular design of OpenMTC allowed rapid adaptation of the platform to the different other network and gateway products. http://www.etsi.org/news-events/events/768-2014-12-etsi-workshop-on-m2m

Telco Grade Network Function VirtualizationIn the context of a cooperative research project performed by Fraunhofer FOKUS and a major mobile operator, mechanisms for realizing telco-grade levels of robustness and fault resilience of virtualized network functions (VNFs) are currently being investigated.

With the ETSI Network Function Virtualization (NFV) standardization and the Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV) initiative gaining significant traction in the industry and by realizing

Page 9: The Fraunhofer FOKUS Competence Center NGNI (Next Generation Network …€¦ · NFV/SDN environment, following both the Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) and Software Defined

the obvious benefits of NFV more and more network operators and service providers are moving towards virtualized infrastructures and virtualized network functions.

Following the latest ETSI NFV Management and Orchestration (MANO) specifications, the project investigates how NFV infrastructures can be managed in order to provide virtualized network functions in a telco-grade fashion. It is examined how major open-source projects, such as OpenStack, can be used to achieve telco-grade levels of network service reliability in NFV environments.
