BSBPA Announces New Board Members, Public Art Campaign at Annual Meeting

The Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association held its Annual Meeting and Community Mixer on Monday, March 21st at the Ballston Spa Country Club. Social media marketing guru Melissa Ward of New Ward Development (www.newward.com) gave a presentation on how village businesses can utilize tools like Facebook, Twitter, Four-Square, Yelp and more.

The BSBPA announced four additions to its board of directors:

Jodi Almela Monaco has lived in the Village of Ballston Spa for 25 years and has two college-aged sons. She is em-ployed by SUNY Empire State College in Saratoga Springs. Jodi had volunteered on many BSBPA and community events in the past and chaired the 2010 Breakfast with Santa event.

Deanna Veet has resided in the village with her husband Alan since 1988. She has two sons, Daniel and David, pres-ently attending college. Both have been volunteers for the film festival. Deanna has been a nurse at Saratoga Hospital for 25 years and is currently working on her Masters in Nursing at Russell Sage College. She has volunteered and served on committees for various hospital sponsored events and most recently is involved in a task force to develop healthy communities. She is looking forward to bringing these experiences to the Business Association.

Kelly Delaney-Elliott has owned and operated Elliott Property Services, a licensed real estate broker, on Front Street since 2004. She was raised in Ballston Spa and together with her husband, also a local business owner, is raising their two children in Ballston Spa. Kelly and her family have a strong local connection and she looks forward to assisting in the continued revitalization efforts of the Village.

Jim Dalpe is the President of WAM Commercial Associates, LLC which is a commercial and industrial property de-velopment company and the Vice-President of WAM Trading Company, LLC which is an international import and export company. Both companies have been based in Ballston Spa for over a decade and WAM Trading has offices also in Shanghai. Jim has a Bachelor of Science degree and spent 22 years developing aircraft and industrial combustion systems for the GE Global Research Center earning two patents and co-authoring several technical papers. Jim is cur-rently an Army Lieutenant Colonel serving on active-duty with the New York Army National Guard as the Chief of Logistics Plans. Jim lives in Ballston Lake with his wife Lisa and two-year old son Jameson.

Also announced at the meeting were the BSBPA's officers for the coming year: Daniel DeFabio (DeFabio Design), President; Corina Oberai (Corina Contemporary Jewelry), Vice President; Donna Avery (Ballston Spa National Bank), Treasurer; Sam Capuano (Sunmark Federal Credit Union), Secretary.

The BSBPA used the evening to kick off a new interactive public art campaign that will tie into their marketing of the village with the slogan “B. Spa B. There”. Similar to the decorated rocking chairs the BSBPA promoted a few years ago, this campaign will feature oversized map marker shapes similar to ones found on online maps. Garden tips from Brookside Nurs-ery: April showers bring May flow-ers (and veggies)--if your soil is ready and you've started your flower and veggie seeds! Get your soil ready by adding Coast of Maine organic compost. Your evergreens will be waking up this month and will be very hungry after fasting all winter. Treat them to a healthy meal of Hol-lytone. When your daffodils start blooming this month, feed them Flowertone to keep their nodding heads perky! Emerging perennials will want a good helping of Planttone to get them started. Don't worry, you can't over-fertilize with organic fer-tilizers, which work slowly in the soil and provide a reservoir of food for your plants to pick at as they need it. As for your lawn, be ready to treat for crabgrass this month, hold off on fertilizing your lawn until next month. When night temperatures stay at or above 40 degrees consis-tently, uncover your perennials and start planting lettuce, broccoli, cauli-flower and other cold weather veg-gies and flowers. Don't forget to cele-brate Earth Day (4/22) and Arbor Day (4/29) along with Easter (4/24). As always, we welcome your ques-tions!

As a new business owner to Ballston Spa, John Cole seems to have driven head first into the heart of everything Ballston Spa offers as a small and welcoming community. When purchasing what used to be Spa Body Works from the Defibaugh family in May of 2010 and turning it into Cole’s Spa Body Works, he was at first unsure of the reaction from the close knit town. Thankfully, his newly acquired employees and the people of Ballston Spa welcomed him with open arms.

Now a proud member of the BSBPA, John and his employees take pride in being involved in many community events such as the Holiday Parade, The Way We Were Car show, and many other events yet to come. Things seem to be headed in the right direction for John and his three collision centers.

Though things are looking up for John now, starting his first collision center in Colonie, NY was definitely a struggle, as open-ing a new business can be for any first time business owner. Coming from a comfortable job at a well known dealership, John realized his life wouldn’t be fulfilled without taking chances. After much consideration and planning, John and his father began fulfilling their dreams in an empty building in Colonie, NY. They spent months renovating so they could finally open their doors to the public in January of 2007.

After hiring the best people he could find and creating the best reputation he could, Cole’s Collision Center gradually ac-quired more customers and contracts with more insurance companies. Three years later, John’s shop has tripled in produc-tivity and he was ready to move on to his next venture. That is where Spa Body Works in Ballston Spa and Wilton came into play. He could not be happier to have become part of a community that cares so much about its businesses and residents. He looks forward to serving the residents of the community and providing the best automobile repair the area has to offer.

Annual Meeting Thank YouAnnual Meeting Thank YouAnnual Meeting Thank YouAnnual Meeting Thank You

As outgoing President, I had two things in mind at this year's Annual Meeting: how would my outgo-ing summary measure up to those that have gone before me and could we top past Annual Meetings. My message was simple. I had many to thank-- the board, my fellow officers and, of course, Ellen, the administrative assistant of the BSBPA. Daniel DeFabio, our incoming president, had my back all the way through my two years, listening to me a lot of evenings as I traveled home from work. The committee chairs of the BSBPA, many of whom are current or past board members, had their hands full looking to improve their events from the year before, raising sponsorship support as well as enlisting volunteers.

Fortunately for the Annual Meeting committee, many chipped in to make the meeting interesting and informa-tional. Our local resident DJ., Mark Hersh, who is the voice of many events, was there to make sure all out voices were heard and the music was just right. Thank you, Mark, you are great. Our guest speaker was Melissa Ward of New Ward Development, whose message about building a community through the network and the opportunities you need to take advantage of and what to look out for generated many questions and active participation from our guests. Thank you, Melissa, for your investment in our program.

My co-chairs Corina Oberai and Heather Leyh are troopers, working into the hours before making sure volunteers were at the door greeting you all and making sure our centerpieces recognized our events and the committee chairs were represented at each table. I would like to thank the Ballston Spa Country Club for their great facility and Tony Panza and his staff of Panza's on the Green , who have continually delivered on some of the best service you could ask for.

The BSBPA membership continues to grow. Our board grew by four members for 2011-12. When many organiza-tions struggle to get volunteer board members, our newest board members, each of them already active in our com-munity, came to us looking to serve on the board. Many thanks to all who make the BSBPA what it is and who help us provide so much to our community.

Jim Whittredge, Past President

From the Marketing Committee– 2011 Billboards Advertising

Sponsorship opportunities are now available for 2011 billboard advertising.

We have booked illuminated billboards on Route 50 at Brookline Road for May

through December of 2011. Our sponsorship goal is to provide your business

with a valuable marketing opportunity and to take advantage of the 20,000 cars

that travel this area daily, all for $600 a month. Additionally this year, we will

be offering a second board for those months in various locations around the Capital region. We will not know the loca-

tion until the board posts but last year we had boards on Erie Boulevard in Schenectady, Route 9 in Latham and Route 9

in Wilton. These boards are just $200 a month and will feature the image of one of the Association's events or our "B.

Spa B. There" marketing campaign. We believe they will raise awareness of Ballston Spa and draw people from outside

of our traditional market to visit our great shops, galleries, museums and restaurants. Last year, most of these boards

received at least a 6 week run, all on major roads with high visibility. Billboards at both locations will have a "Sponsored

by" banner ad across the bottom with your logo and the name of your business. What a great way to help your local

community and associate your business with such a positive message. Sponsorships are available on a first come, first

served basis only for BSBPA members. In an effort to get everyone the month and location they want, we have to secure

additional boards for the summer months. If you are interested, please let us know ASAP and before May 1st as prime

locations sell out quickly. We would also like to suggest that businesses group together to advertise on these boards.

Examples of this might be to have restaurants, antique stores or galleries split the cost of the boards and share the mes-

sage and sponsor name recognition. If you are interested in finding out more about this opportunity or have any ques-

tions please feel free to contact Tina Mangino-Coffey at 885-2725 or [email protected]

Ballston Spa’s Newest Art in Public Places Summer Event!Ballston Spa’s Newest Art in Public Places Summer Event!Ballston Spa’s Newest Art in Public Places Summer Event!Ballston Spa’s Newest Art in Public Places Summer Event!

The Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association has an-nounced its 2011 marketing and promotion campaign, "B. Spa B "B. Spa B "B. Spa B "B. Spa B There”.There”.There”.There”. The campaign will promote visits by residents and visitors to our unique shops, restaurants and galleries as well as the attractions and events held during the spring and summer months, including free outdoor concerts and movies. In conjunction with this promotion, the BSBPA is organizing an interactive Art in Public Places event featur-

ing a Map Marker sponsorship and contest. The BSBPA will offer large Map Markers to businesses, or-ganizations, individuals and families to decorate. The decorated Markers will be placed around the vil-lage by Memorial Day weekend for people to look at, interact with and enjoy all summer. This will be a great opportunity to display creative artwork, showcase historic sites, and provide an educational oppor-tunity to teach people about Ballston Spa and the businesses, art, history, and ecology of the area. Each Map Marker will be tagged with a QR code, which is similar to a bar code – so people with smart phones can scan them and link to a site featuring a photo and information about the marker and its creators. Even those without smart phones will be able to access the websites via www.ballston.org from a computer. There will be a fun competition and judging of the Map Markers for their artistic and crea-tive merits. The proceeds will go to support local activities like Concerts in the Park, The Ballston Spa Film Festival, and the Adopt A Plot program.

A sponsorship of $50 will get you a Map Marker, a listing in a map guide (both paper and electronic) showing the locations of the different Markers throughout the village, and recognition of the sponsorship support provided to the local community and its events. Sponsors may choose to decorate the marker themselves, sponsor one for a school class or community group to decorate or the BSBPA can refer them to an area artist who is interested in a commission by turning the Marker into a work of art. The B. Spa B. There committee will have approximately 100 Markers available for sale alone or, for an additional cost, we can provide shepherd’s hooks and cement weighted stands to securely display the Map Markers around the village.

Come to the April BSBPA Mid-Week Mixer on Wednesday, April 13, from 5:30-7 pm at Fifty South, 2128 Route 50, to join us for the kickoff of the program and to see some sample markers. If you can’t make the mixer, you can see the sample at Coffee Planet. The Markers will be available to order by April 13th. Marker order forms will be available at the April mixer, Coffee Planet, Corina’s Contemporary Jewelry, Strolling Village Artisans or order online at www.ballston.org. Marker pick up location will be an-nounced soon. The decorated Markers should be ready to be put on display by May 27, 2011. This event is in need of volunteers, especially someone with web page creation skills and the ability to extract data from a database to automatically generate web pages.

For more information regarding the Map Marker or program, please contact Eric Seplowitz at [email protected] , Daniel DeFabio at [email protected] or contact Ellen Mottola at the BSBPA office, 885-2772 or [email protected].

The Ballston Spa Fire Department is opening its doors on Saturday April 9th (10AM-2PM) and Sunday April 10th (12PM-4PM) to area residents, so they can learn about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter in their community. Through-out the day, the Ballston Spa Fire Department companies will conduct tours of the station and firefighter apparatus, al-low visitors to try on turnout gear, and provide activities and stations throughout the firehouse for visitors to participate

in. The fire department will discuss the requirements to be a volunteer, as well as conduct demonstrations,

answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved in the fire department. Refreshments will also be available. This event is open to any potential volunteer who is interested in learning more about the volunteer fire service, or would like to apply. Volunteer positions are available for: Firefighter, Fire Police, Junior Firefighter, Explorer Firefighter, and

Marching Band.

Becoming a volunteer firefighter means being part of a team that fights fires, saves lives, conducts rescues, assists with fire prevention, administers first aid, and helps the community. The Ballston Spa Fire Department is dedicated to saving the lives and protecting the property through fire prevention, suppression and public education. “Come on out and join us for this unique recruitment day at our firehouse,” said Department Fire Chief Scott Kerns. “This is a great opportunity for our neighbors to observe the exciting tasks of a firefighter, fire police and junior firefighter. Our current members love what they do; they are everyday heroes who help neighbors in need. We hope our recruitment day will inspire other area residents to join our fire service family.” Volunteer firefighters do important and challenging work for the pure satisfac-tion of helping others. They are essential for a number of reasons, including the fact that volunteers live in the communi-

ties in which they serve which enhances response times, and they save taxpayers millions of dollars every year.
