4 Anton Kuerti with Kolja Lessing
Czerny and Mendelssohn had more in common than most people would sus-pect. Both of them were extreme child prodigies, creating some of their finest compositions by the time they were 18; both left a stunning quantity of music to the world, and both wrote in a style con-sidered (whether justly or unjustly) slightly out of date at the time it was created. Both were enormously successful in their day, and both were stupendous pianists. They also came to know each other quite well when Mendelssohn visited Vienna, pay-ing great respect to Czerny, who was his senior by 18 years and a very important personage in Vienna’s musical life.
Mendelssohn’s early Sonata in F minor, composed in 1823 at the age of 14, is one of his first truly worthwhile works, and shows a distinct Beethovenian influence. Within a few years, it was followed by masterpieces such as the glorious Octet. The opening movement starts with a dark, heartfelt, improvisatory violin solo, leading to a sprightly Allegro which continues the somewhat tragic mood, lightened by an unexpected and delicious modulation to Major, and a wonderfully songful second theme. A subtle reminder of the opening violin solo closes the movement.
The middle movement displays Men-delssohn’s ability to spin out a long, expressive melody, cuddling it to sound natural and inevitable. The middle section develops some agitation after a luminous, calm start. The finale exhibits a genuine Mendelssohnian fervor, leading to its ex-cited conclusion, that, however, suddenly becomes quiet and hides at the very end.
In a gesture of love and respect for Mendelssohn, Czerny added enchanting violin descant accompaniments to Men-delssohn’s Six Songs without Words Op. 38, without changing a note of the piano parts.
And in a similar vein, the eminent ro-mantic composer Ferdinand David made
a version for violin solo of one of Mendels-sohn’s most popular Songs without Words, the “Jägerlied” (Hunter’s Song). David was a friend of Mendelssohn’s, and gave the premiere performance of his famous Violin Concerto in E minor.
Carl Czerny wrote perhaps more music than any other composer in history, and most of it has been totally neglected. The Sonata Concertante in E flat major has probably never been heard before. The surviving manuscript is not a score and thus does not include the violin part, is almost impossible to read from, and has no rehearsal letters, bar numbers, or fingerings, nor does the violin part have any markings like bowings, so it appears almost impossible that these parts could ever have been used for a performance. It was never published, and no other copy is known. Therefore, we would like to deem the current performances the World Premiere. Lessing and Kuerti have already recorded this Sonata, to be released in 2014 together with Czerny’s Violin Sonata in A major.
Considerably exceeding the difficulty of even such challenging works as Beethoven’s “Kreutzer” Sonata, this is not a work that even the most accomplished and fervent amateurs would have been likely to attempt, and as violin recitals were essentially non-existent in Czerny’s day, one can easily surmise why it was never published. The handwritten copy was sup-plied on microfilm by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, and deciphered and edited under the supervision of Anton Kuerti.
The opening has a cheerful, optimistic theme in the piano, accompanied by bustling triplets in the violin, which persist throughout the movement. The second theme introduces an element of genteel charm to the proceedings, and the devel-opment thoroughly exploits the material, becoming more and more demanding and

virtuosic for both instruments. The Allegretto starts with the quintes-
sence of Viennese charm, while including passages of extraordinary colour, and eventually leading to the Scherzo, which is full of virtuoso fun and spirit. Czerny’s most colourful moments are his vaguely Schubertian modulations, which occur frequently and give the piece some very
profound moments. The finale further increases the demands
on the performers, with almost nonstop whirling 16th notes, and a spectacular ending. Surely, this work should find ap-peal both with audiences and performers. It is a rare privilege to be able to find and unveil music that has been so unjustly neglected.

6 Anton Kuerti with Kolja Lessing
