Celebrating 80 Years of OLSH College Bentleigh

In 1933, an area of land 323' X 246' extending from Jasper Road through to Robert Street was purchased for approx. £1,500. In November 1933, a small weatherboard cottage was donated by a Miss Quinn, whose father had been instrumental in building the original St. Peter's Primary School. It was transported by horse and wagon to its position in Robert Street and it provided temporary

residence to the Sisters during the construction of a new Convent. Mr. Kennedy, who is driving the team of horses, was the father of six daughters who attended the College and three of them became Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

1934: The OLSH Sisters moved to the newly built convent in Jasper Road.

1938: The small cottage became the first classroom of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College Bentleigh.

In 2018 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College celebrated with joy and gratitude the 80th anniversary of its foundation. A number of events and activities formed part of our celebrations for this milestone year. Significantly, we were able to finalise our building projects which were the new Performing Arts Centre and the Senior Learning Hub. Students, staff and the entire community have relished using these new spaces and we are grateful to the Victorian State Government for their funding contribution towards the refurbishment of our Performing Arts Centre.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 5

In this 80th year the students at OLSH College continued the proud tradition of all those who have gone before them. Importantly, the Year 12 Class of 2018 received outstanding VCE results which positioned OLSH College in the top Ten Catholic Schools in Victoria.

The 80th anniversary also provided us with the opportunity to examine current practices to see how they can be improved upon to take us into the future. The operations of the College were reviewed as part of the National School Improvement Tool (NSIT) and we found this to be a very helpful process. The review provided very positive feedback and it also outlined some areas for us to focus on developing in the coming years.

“So what does it mean to be OLSH to all students, staff, parents, alumnae and Board members?” At the heart of being OLSH is an absolute willingness and determination, time and time again, to actually be Heart people who believe in the goodness of every single person. If we truly live out of this belief it means that we accept each other as equals and as valuable human beings. We may differ in age, in gender, in opinions, likes and dislikes, appearances and talents but ultimately each of us has exactly the same longing which is the longing to love and be loved. This longing is the presence of God within and around us and our challenge is to become people of heart who act this out every day. Jules Chevalier, Marie Louise Hartzer, every OLSH sister who has lived and worked in the school and all students were driven by this spirit. Across these past 80 years there have been tens of thousands of people touched by this same spirit. In this our 80th year it is our turn to continue to be heart people, in the classrooms and the playground, in the staff room, at home and in the workplace, in the convent and in the Boardroom. As we do this, we rise above our personal agenda and self-opinions and we will find that we become our very best selves most of the time. This is what education in the OLSH Tradition is about, it’s about being the very best we can be and committing ourselves to making this happen.

We celebrate 80 years of education of girls in the OLSH tradition. The pioneering spirit and vision of the OLSH sisters has been the foundation of this journey of the College. Their commitment to the education of girls began in Issoudun, France in 1874 and is now present in 28 nations across the world. For all of us at OLSH College Bentleigh today we are in a privileged place, surrounded by a beautiful campus, with outstanding opportunities for education for you, our young OLSH women of heart.

I have come that you may have life and have it to the full.

College Board Report

The College is overseen by a fully incorporated Board of Directors, appointed by the Trustees of the

Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

The Directors meet monthly and conduct the business of the College through the following Board

Committees:

- Finance, Audit and Risk Management

- Building and Facilities Development

Education in Faith

Achievements

During 2018 the College community, both staff and students, endeavoured to further embed, live and work out of our OLSH Proclamation. There were a number of initiatives that enabled members of the College community to continue to work towards fulfilling the directives of the strategic plan.

Highlights from 2018 include:

Growing a culture of prayer through regular use of the Regnet Christus Chapel for communal prayer (both in RE classes and before school on Thursday mornings)

Growth in number of students participating in the St. Kilda Food Van (an outreach of Edmund

Rice). We have committed to another 4 food van evenings to allow Year 11 students to

experience this outreach due to growing interest among students

Detailed analysis of the ECIP data identified a clear area of development for 2018 and beyond – greater articulation of the link between the Gospel imperative and justice action. A short reflection ‘pre’ and ‘post’ outreach action has begun to address this goal

The HoD RE and DPF&M attended a series of PL days focused on the new RE framework and the

‘pedagogy of encounter’. A second grant was applied for and a team of OLSH and St. James staff

are collaborating to develop the Year 8 RE curriculum with a final exhibition of student work to be

held in November 2019

A first immersion to Fiji was facilitated in September. This was held in Suva in St. Agnes parish

and primary school, Nabua. There was much interaction with the MSC and OLSH communities

during this experience. Two staff and fifteen Year 10/11 students participated in this immersion

and the evaluations proved it was an invaluable experience for all

A successful and memorable immersion to Wadeye and Ngiui was facilitated in September. Five

students and two staff participated in this immersion

Singing practices prior to liturgical celebrations continues to grow student participation and a

culture of singing at the College

Celebrating our 80th anniversary, the Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart was opened with a

vigil evening prayer. The newly refurbished Regnet Christus Chapel was blessed and the new

Performing Arts Centre and Senior Hub were also officially opened and blessed. The following

day, morning eucharist was followed by a mission carnival on the field where $13,000 was raised

for OLSH Overseas Aid to go towards the work of the OLSH sisters in Tonga and South Africa

The staff spirituality day, “Walking in the Footsteps of the OLSH Sisters”, focused on the story of

the OLSH Sisters in Bentleigh over the last 80 years. Sr. Elaine Cochrane and Mrs. Lee Toll

(archivist) prepared presentations and facilitated sharing with staff on the stories of the first

Sisters in the parishes of both Moorabbin and East Bentleigh. Staff then walked ‘in the footsteps

of the OLSH Sisters’ on pilgrimage back to the College

$5,443.66 was raised in the Lenten Appeal. This amount was shared between Caritas, the St. Kilda

Food Van and OLSH Overseas Aid

We had approximately 55 students involved in Baptcare in 2017. This increased to 70 students in

2018.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

OLSH College has employed a Data and School Improvement role with the intention of using data to inform practice and track growth of our students. Data has been provided – big data (NAPLAN, Allwell Testing) as well as smaller data (WAM results, End of Semester results) via our LMS to assist teachers with their teaching. In keeping with the John Hattie ideal of a year’s growth for a year’s learning we are working towards developing a growth mindset with our learning community.

In NAPLAN numeracy our students have remained closely aligned with the state median with an improvement for the students in the 2018 Year 9 Cohort from their results of 2016. Writing with this cohort demonstrated significant growth between their 2016 results and 2018 results. NAPLAN data indicates students at OLSH have shown growth in all of the literacy domains.

Achievements

4 Houses 1 Shared Spirit.

2018 saw the implementation of our new pastoral House system. After many years of consultation and development the College embarked on a new pastoral system to build on the fine tradition of wellbeing that has existed at the College for 80 years. Through the House system, the building of student staff relationships, and ensuring that each of our students were known, valued and loved has been and continues to be, the focus of all that we do. Relationships were enhanced with; organised activities to build the relationships within and across year levels; individual conversations with each Learning Mentor occurred where students discussed their learning, took time to build relationships and set targets for the rest of the year. Each House was directed by the Head of House whose prime responsibility was, in a personal and direct way, for the care, guidance and progress of each student in the House. The importance of maintaining year level identity was also a focus and thus the development of the new role of year level Program Leaders was established.

Staff took part in professional development on building resilient staff and students with a thought provoking and informative presentation by Andrew Fuller. The importance of being in touch with oneself, eating the right foods, having a decent sleep are all important in building our own resilience, which in turn makes us better equipped to provide care for our girls.

Page 15: Annual Report Secondary Template 2018 · 2020. 8. 7. · 2018 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 4 Principal’s Report Celebrating 80 Years of OLSH College Bentleigh In 1933,

2018 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 14

To inspire our students to be confident, courageous and resilient in themselves, their learning and their abilities, students took part in Rotary activities such as Camp Awakenings, which aims to positively impact youth by way of personal development, leadership, self-esteem. Others represented the College in the Model of United Nations Assembly, all Year 11s took part in Rotary Youth Driver Awareness – RYDA, and some students participated in RYPEN- Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment with a particular focus on leadership. For the first time OLSH also participated in P.A.R.T.Y (Prevent Alcohol and Risk related Trauma in Youth) at the Alfred Hospital. This experience graphically demonstrated the consequences of risky behaviour, including drug and alcohol use.

Providing our girls with outdoor education opportunities at all year levels, helps them connect with their environment and with each other and continues to provide them with challenges that take them out of their comfort zone. Our camp program at each year level helps to develop the qualities of resilience, independence and good decision making.

Page 16: Annual Report Secondary Template 2018 · 2020. 8. 7. · 2018 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 4 Principal’s Report Celebrating 80 Years of OLSH College Bentleigh In 1933,

Our Wellbeing Program in 2018 focused in particular on Positive Education and Emotional Intelligence. All students completed the VIA strengths survey which helped to identify their character strengths. They worked on tasks that helped them to explore how their strengths help to enhance their emotional intelligence.

In its sixth year the Hartzer program continued to provide our girls with an opportunity never experienced. The Hartzer Residential program has now become an integral part of what we do and who we are at OLSH. At OLSH “We are Confident and Engaged” and we believe that OLSH girls can do anything. This program has continued to provide our girls with moments that enable growth, independence, resilience, risk taking and learning.

From the Girls

“Hartzer was an amazing experience that I wish everyone could experience. You find the inner self you

didn’t know you had and make new friends. I also realised how much family and friends who weren’t at

Hartzer meant to me.”

“Hartzer was an amazing experience that was captured with love, joy, happiness, humour and

independence.”

“Hartzer for me was one of the best experiences of my life. I gained so many new skills, made new

friendships, learned to accept everyone for who they are and I also focused on who I am. This experience

will stay in my memories forever.”

“I have learnt that living in the country is beautiful and I have learnt about how to be independent.”

From our Parents

“We are indeed blessed to be a part of OLSH and the Hartzer program”.

“It is really a great thing that we can send our daughter off for 4 weeks with every confidence that she

will be looked after as well as she is with her family. We feel very fortunate to be a part of the OLSH

family”.

“THANK YOU OLSH. How lucky are our girls to have the opportunity to spend a month in beautiful

Bowral and experience time away from home to really grow and develop in all aspects of their person.

Not many schools are able to offer the sort of program you have provided for them.”

“When we came to visit Hartzer our daughter, she was a different person….she was so relaxed, calm and

happy to see us!!!! The fresh air made her look so alive, happy and vibrant. As weeks have passed, I can

see that in many small ways Hartzer is still with her, in the little things she does or says that weren’t

there before. She has grown up.”

VALUE ADDED

jjj

STUDENT SATISFACTION

“There was some apprehension at first with the new House System, but since we’ve settled into the

school year, I’ve seen a lot more cohesion among the year levels. All the girls in my mentor group are so

kind to me and I’m happy to say that I now have friends among all the year levels.”

“The new House system has enabled me to get to know other girls in my House from other year levels

and build a strong friendship with the girls in my mentor group. I can be there for them if they ever need

help or even a little guidance with whatever it may be.”

“There has been a very positive attitude regarding the new House system throughout the school. What I

have seen work really well is the bonding between all the girls in different year levels, seeing

relationships develop between the junior and senior girls and everyone getting into the House spirit!”

“I think it helped keeping all the year levels organised and it was refreshing to hear about other year

levels stories and what they have on.”

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

The roll is taken every period by the subject teacher and in each homeroom period. Parents receive a text for any unexplained absence. Unexplained absences are followed up during the day immediately by the Wellbeing Team and parents are notified.

Homeroom teachers contact parents when students are absent with no known reason for more than 3 days. Students are followed up by the Wellbeing team and supports put in place if required.

The College focuses on the wellbeing and inclusion of each and every student and developing them to ensure that they maximise their learning potential

Staff can rely on their colleagues for support and assistance

Professional Development sessions are provided which focus on human growth and development in all areas of life. Staff are also encouraged to pursue further professional development

The College celebrates and reinforces relationships between parents, students and teachers

All students are treated with respect and as responsible people

It is a bonus to have opportunities to connect with international and national OLSH communities

I really enjoy teaching at OLSH, the nurturing environment and the values that the school lives by are very important to me. I feel that the school is aiming to develop the whole person and support them in all their endeavours.

Goals & Intended Outcomes

OLSH College embraces a contemporary and rich curriculum, developing our students by promoting excellence and resilience in the achievement of their personal best. In accordance with the pillars of OLSH education and to broaden the exposure of our students to the needs of local and global communities, the College continues its tradition of arranging immersion trips. The College continues to celebrate and promote its unique identity and further the tradition of excellent educational practice.

Achievements

In 2018 the College celebrated the 80th anniversary of education in the OLSH tradition, with festivities which included a birthday function in the OLSH Centre, the blessing of the new buildings, choral performances and tours of the College by guests and alumnae.

The refurbishment of the old office area into the Learning Hub space and the redevelopment of the theatrette into the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) were completed mid 2018. The Learning Hub has been well utilised by the senior students at the College and the PAC hosted performances of April’s Fool in conjunction with De La Salle College, and Alice in Wonderland, produced in conjunction with St James College.

The College has continued its involvement in a Community Service Program, with our students participating in social justice outreach programs such as St Vincent de Paul (St Kilda Soup Van), muffin baking for the van and Baptcare. The Issoudun program at Hartrzer Park, Bowral, successfully continued for the sixth year, with the students gaining many rich experiences during their time away.
