Year 8 Retreat Monday 22 April

Salesian Retreat, Lysterfield

Faith and Mission

At our retreat, we completed as series of activities including feeding the sheep; we saw a video of creation called 'Turtle world' and made artwork called mandalas.

At the end of the day, I think we all felt as though we had bonded better as a year level. We all enjoyed the day and appreciate the work put into it. Grace Prior, 8 White

We all were excited about going on Retreat last week. My highlights of the day were the small liturgy we did at the end of our visit, as well as feeding the sheep. From this experience I found I learnt more about myself and reflected on things. Overall it was a great day and I enjoyed it. Ruby Allardice 8 White

NAPLAN 2013 All OLSH students in Years 7 and 9 will be participating in the NAPLAN: National Assessment Program: Literacy and Numeracy between Tuesday, 14 May and Thursday, 16 May. Please ensure students attend on these days.

What is NAPLAN?

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 7 and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.

Why do students do NAPLAN tests?

The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement.

NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance.

How is NAPLAN performance measured?

NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test. Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each test. Each test scale has ten bands and all year levels are reported on the same scale. The performance of individual students can be compared to the average performance of all students in Australia.

A NAPLAN report will be issued by OLSH later in the year. The same report format is used for every student in Australia. How are NAPLAN test results used?

• Schools use results to identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.

• Students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.

• Teachers use results to help them better identify students who require greater challenges or additional support.

• The community can see average school NAPLAN results on the My School website.

HOMEWORK HAVEN OLSH Library Thursdays 3.30pm to 4.30pm Homework Haven is a special place where any student needing help with class work can come for help with their homework from volunteer staff. We would encourage parents to encourage their daughters to attend at this time.

Trip to Tasmania

“Your girls are superb. They are welcome back here any time”. This was one of the compliments the College received by a hotel manager we met on the journey through Tasmania. It was an absolute privilege for the staff involved to be able to travel with the 55 Year 10 students who made this journey across the sea. A huge thank you to Mrs La Greca who coordinated and organised this wonderful opportunity and to Mrs Rayment, Mr Liston and Ms Schocker who accompanied the girls. We thank the girls for the way that they truly lived out our spirit of being Heart People. Our Year 10 students that attended were a credit to the school in every way. Congratulations girls you made us proud!

"Coming in on the Spirit of Tasmania at 5am participating in an ANZAC dawn service was a whole new experience and allowed us to further appreciate everything the ANZAC soldiers did for us."

"Hours of travelling together in Tasmania really strengthened new and former friendships!" "Who said Tasmania was cold! Saturday was 24 degrees, sunny - just a little windy though! "I have never experienced anything as scary as the ghost tour at Port Arthur as we walked around the site by night with a few lanterns - the guide really brought us back in time!"

"We stopped in a place called Richmond - I was fascinated by not only the quaint shops but also by the oldest bridge and the oldest Catholic Church - it was so beautiful on the hill overlooking the whole town."

"I wasn't expecting to learn so much about our history on this trip - It was a bonus!"

"The Tahune Airwalk was so beautiful. We walked on the suspended platform above the forest canopy and enjoyed spectacular views of the Huon and Picton Rivers."

"Our accommodation was great - we had cosy cabins on the Spirit, cute cabins by the water in Port Arthur, and amazing views of Hobart in our motel." "Our final stop before boarding our plane in Launceston was the Cataract Gorge - the view from our chairlift was just amazing! Its natural beauty, the sound of the running water and the blue skies above were a beautiful way to end our tour of Tasmania!"

It was such an honour and privilege to be able to take and share this journey of Tasmania with such a friendly, supportive and keen group of Year 10 students. The natural beauty of Tasmania brought out the best of each student. They represented themselves and the College with excellence - the essence of the heart shaped island was truly mirrored by the essence of each OLSH student! Congratulations on a memorable shared experience of Tasmania. Mrs Antonella La Greca Year 10 Coordinator

Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Competition Lunch On the Friday, 19 April, to celebrate upcoming Anzac day and our achievements as Regional Finalists of the Premier’s Spirit of Anzac competition, 17 students were invited to a luncheon hosted by the Premier of Victoria. After being briefed on the exciting prospect of our impending 2013 Canberra tour, my fellow finalists and I were presented with our certificates at the Victorian National Gallery and had our photos taken. We were then invited to enjoy a splendid lunch with Australian War Veterans who had a sweet smile and a fascinating story to share.

I was eager to share my experience of writing a short story on the nurses during WW1 and in turn they shared their tales as members of the infantry, navy and nursing forces. It was a wonderful way to remember the sacrifices made by previous Australian and New Zealand men and women and it was a great deal of fun to meet my fellow finalists. I am very excited to go on the study tour of Canberra in June which will include a visit to the National Archives of Australia, the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia and numerous other historical sites. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and I urge students in Years 9 and 10 to enter and discover something new.

Arts News Some wonderful news to report from the Arts Domain: In a report from the Argos from 1890, it was stated that “the object of art was to be artistic and to be artistic is to represent something beautiful or elevating or instructive”. In the Arts Domain we are across all three areas. This year we have had some truly inspiring portraits completed by the Year 7, 9 and the 11 students. There has been some sensitive and conceptual work by the Year 12 students, and some beautiful and instructive work completed across many of the year levels where students use their art to comment on a variety of issues. Year 7 students have been looking at art and producing work that explores techniques and skills. Year 8 students have been exploring Still Life and the inherent beauty in our personal and valued possessions. Each year in March, during Catholic Education Week, there is a major exhibition of work from Catholic Schools from the state of Victoria. It is a large exhibition with hundreds of entries judged by very high profile members of the Melbourne art scene. This year I am very pleased to announce that Feebie Andrinopoulos’, Issoudun, still life painting won the cover design (far right) for the exhibition catalogue. This is a wonderful honour and it is lovely to see her work not only recognised for its excellence but to see it in print on hundreds of catalogues. As the old saying goes ‘but that’s not all’. Late last year the Year 10 students produced a book sculpture where pages are either folded or cut to change the shape of the book and to create a sculptural piece that emerges from the pages. Isabelle Burns entered her book sculpture in the Libris Awards which is the Australian Artists’ Book Prize. Isabelle’s beautiful creation has been shortlisted in the awards. Congratulations Isabelle.

Past student Danielle Ventura (Unit 3 &4 VCE 2012) was one of our outstanding Studio Arts students. Her work was shortlisted and then selected to be represented in the TOP SHOTS Exhibition which is an exhibition of excellence from the VCE cohort. It is very exclusive and only a handful of students each year are selected. Her work will be exhibited at the MGA (Monash Gallery of Art) Congratulations Danielle. Don’t forget that many of these wonderful works will be on display at our Annual Arts Festival which is run in conjunction with Open Day later in the year.

House Athletics Carnival Friday 19 April

Every year our Athletics Carnival starts with a drizzle of rain and this year was no different. The weather cleared quickly and we happily went on with the day. It was a well organised day with Xavier winning all categories. It was great to see all year levels participating enthusiastically and having an enjoyable time. On behalf of everyone involved, I would like to thank the VET Sport and Rec Unit 1-2 students for their assistance. A big thank you also to the Year 12s for their participation in their themed costumes from ‘around the world’. Finally, thank you to the parents and staff.
