Dear Family and Friends of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College,

This week we have been pleased to share in the great work of our Rock Eisteddfod students. Their creativity, commitment, enthusiasm and pursuit of excellence have been an inspiration to the College community. To witness so many of our students being involved in a common activity is a wonderful opportunity for us to be grateful for the sheer enjoyment of being with each other! We certainly also pay tribute to the teachers who have been involved in the performance preparation. Their energy and generosity provide the foundation for such opportunities for our girls. One of the highlights of returning to term three this year has been the launch of our new College website. Faith and Mission

On Monday morning, we gathered as a College community to honour and celebrate the life of St. Mary of the Cross. A woman of courage and determination who lived faithful to the Gospel of Jesus, Mary brought hope and encouragement to the needy and disheartened. May our own faith be fired by the Holy Spirit as hers was! In looking at our pillars, one cannot help but think of Mary MacKillop. The four pillars speak of her very life and mission and I sense that she would easily have found a home among us. In the spirit of St. Mary of the Cross then, with a desire for God’s Kingdom to reign here in our hearts….in our community….in our land….. we pray:

I believe in God the Creator of all, who has given the earth to all people, and I believe in people as the image of God. I believe in Jesus Christ, who came to encourage us and to heal us, to proclaim the peace of God to humankind. I believe in the Spirit of God, who works in every man and woman. I believe in the Church, moved by the Spirit to serve all people. I believe in Australians, in their courage and spirit of adventure in their perseverance and hard work in their ordinariness and at‐home‐ness in the their black Aboriginal beauty in their migrant struggles in their search for identity. I believe in our responsibilities for creation: The trust of every mountain range, of every forest, of every harbour, of every city, of every plan to build a future. Sr. Megan Donohue, Assistant Principal Faith and Mission

We remember

We pray for the repose of the souls of: Roy Edema, grandfather of Brittany Raux in Year 9 Green

Aileen Lovick, grandmother of Shannon McInnes in Year 10 White

We pray with confidence in the Heart of our compassionate God that they may rest in peace. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, pray for us!

Change of class times and a traffic alert for Thursday 25 August As you would know OLSH College will be enjoying OPEN DAY on Thursday 25 August from 1.30pm—5pm. In order for visitors to witness our students in action, there will be a change to the times of our school day on Open Day, with classes running from 1.30pm—5 pm. With additional people coming to OLSH College we anticipate increased traffic around the school. We ask that you please obey the traffic signs around the College, especially in Robert Street. Please check College website before the day to confirm the changes to traffic conditions.

I do not believe in the right of the strongest nor the power of the oppressors. I do not believe that I can fight oppression far away if I tolerate injustice here. I do not believe that conflict and hunger are inevitable and peace unattainable I do not believe that all suffering is in vain, Nor that dreams will remain dreams, Nor that death is the end. But I dare to believe , always and in spite of everything, in a new humanity, in God’s own dream of a new heaven and a new earth where justice will flourish and peace will reign, in our land, in our world.

Curriculum Matters

How do you recognise a successful student? Successful students exhibit a combination of successful attitudes and behaviours as well as intellectual capacity. Here are some pointers to consider. Successful students:

‐ are responsible and active Successful students get involved in their studies, accept responsibility for their own education, and are active participants in it!

‐ have educational goals Successful students are motivated by what their goals represent in terms of career aspirations and life's desires. If your educational goals are truly yours, not someone else's, they will motivate a vital and positive academic attitude. If you are familiar with what these hot buttons represent and refer to them often, especially when you tire of being a student, nothing can stop you; if you aren't and don't, everything can and will!

‐ ask questions Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge.

‐ learn that a student and a teacher make a team.

‐ don’t sit in the back Successful students minimise classroom distractions that interfere with learning.

‐ understand that their actions affect learning. Successful students know their personal behaviour affect their feelings and emotions which in turn can affect learning.

‐ talk about what they're learning. Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put it into words. Talking about something, with friends or classmates, is not only good for checking whether or not you know something, it’s a proven learning tool.

‐ don't just study at assessment or exam time Successful students know that divided periods of study are more effective than cram sessions, and they practise it.

‐ are good time managers. Successful students do not procrastinate. They have learned that time control is life control and have consciously chosen to be in control of their life. Ms Tania Tickyj Assistant Principal Learning and Teaching

ARTS FESTIVAL ARTS FESTIVAL ARTS FESTIVAL ARTS FESTIVAL ARTS FESTIVAL ARTS FESTIVAL Arts education—be it Visual Art, Music, Drama, Design & Technology or Visual Communication and Design—provides an experience that’s not about just being able to recognise a Van Gogh or a Mozart. It is about an invaluable creative experience that teaches students to problem solve, think creatively, be self disciplined and self motivated. The ARTS FESTIVAL will celebrate our students’ imagination, skill, hard work and talent. The Visual Art exhibition will be open from 12 noon in the School Hall. The Rock Band will be playing from 4.50 pm—5.20 pm. Ms Elizabeth Miller MP will officially open the festival at 5.20 pm. Music Ensembles and the Choir will entertain from 5.30pm—6pm. The Arts Domain would like to invite all members of the OLSH Community to call in after school and enjoy the celebrations. Ms Bronwyn Cottrell Arts Domain Leader

Student Wellbeing Matters

OLSH Year 11 Seminar Day

On 8 August, Jonathan E Doyle, the National Director of Choicez Media visited Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College to help Year 11s explore some of the big issues for young women in the area of relationships. Jonathan focused on getting all of us to realise our value and our worth, teaching us that we should never settle for less than we deserve. Every Year 11 student was given a personal journal so that we had the chance to reflect on the issues and the pressures raised and then talk about them in group discussions. Jonathan stressed to us that “if you do what you’ve always done then you’ll get what you’ve always got” and in order for us to have a happier future we need to overcome our fears of being alone and focus on ourselves for once. We learnt that the real meaning of human love “...is to will the good of the other”. Overall, every girl enjoyed the day and the seminar was an interesting way to educate us in developing better outcomes in our relationships. By Mikaele Horsnell, Year 11 White

SCSA Interschool Volleyball—OLSH teams make the Grand Finals On Tuesday, 2 August at Springers Recreational Centre, the OLSH junior, intermediate and senior teams competed against five other teams from Melbourne and Geelong in the SCSA Volleyball tournament. At the end of the day all three of our teams played in their respective Grand Finals, but unfortunately none of our teams came away as premiers. However, congratulations must go to intermediate player, Daryin Girton took out Most Valuable player for her division. This award was cause for great celebration. Senior Team The seniors had a very enjoyable day, winning two games and drawing three. Their efforts resulted in them making the Grand Final against Clonard on percentage. After a tight game however, Clonard College from Geelong came out on top. The five participating Year 12s enjoyed their last school volleyball tournament ever and will definitely miss participating every year! Annie Mirabile, Year 12 White Intermediate Team The interschool Volleyball team had a very successful day at Springers Reserve. The girls only lost one of the four pool games against Catholic Ladies College (CLC), who we eventually played in the Grand Final. The Grand Final against CLC was a great game to watch, with both schools trying their hardest for the premiership. CLC however were victorious in two close sets, with a much older and more experienced squad than ours. Special mention to Ellen Newton, Pearl Stockley and Josie Gonzalez who showed great commitment and skill all season—a fantastic example to our younger team members. Also to Dariyn Girton who was MVP in the Grand Final and played a tremendous game of volleyball. Mr Nicholas Wanless Junior Team The OLSH junior team started out on a high note with a win against St. Columba’s from Essendon. We went on to win the next two games against Avila and Clonard. We then lost to Ave Maria, and drew against Catholic Ladies College (CLC.) At the end of the day, there was a mix up in the junior results. We thought that we had finished third and Mr Carmody let two girls go home with their respective parents. After a recount of points with all of the results added in, we discovered that we were into the Grand Final against Avila. Girls ran madly to the car park to get the two players back so they could take the court. OLSH won the first set, but Avila won the second. As the game was played to time, at the siren the result came down to points won. Sadly, OLSH lost by 7 points. The girls tried their hardest and it was a great game! A big ‘thank you’ to Mr Carmody for his patience, time and efforts in coaching us this year. Jaymie Hutchinson, Year 8 Green and Beth De Vries, Year 8 White

OLSH’s AFL footy team wins a hard‐earned victory in SCSA competition On Thursday 4 August, the OLSH school AFL footy team stepped onto the Elsternwick Park footy field, wearing uniforms of a range of colours and creating a fun and bubbly atmosphere as we warmed up for the day ahead. We began the first game firing, the midfield worked well as a collective group to get the ball up into the forward line, and many girls had a crack at kicking a goal and increasing the margin, while the backline fought their opposition off the ball. The first game produced a score of 51‐15, OLSH dominating. The rest of the day was played in a similar manner, girls not being afraid to throw their body on the line and go in hard for the ball, and others showing some muscle, when tackling the opposition and producing a holding the ball result. The second game was played in high spirits, OLSH defeating St. Columba’s College 31‐6. The third game was played against Sacred Heart Girls College. This game was closer than the rest and girls dug deep to produce a score of 28‐13, in favour of OLSH. Our final match before the grand final was played against Presentation College, Windsor (PCW). Most of those playing in the grand final were kept off to rest up for the big game ahead and those on were exhausted and needed a break. The game was dominated by PCW, producing a final score of 8‐28. Once the last game was completed, a short break was given to the teams playing in the grand final, giving girls a chance to get rehydrated and prepare themselves for the game ahead. The grand final was to be played between OLSH and SHGC (Sacred Heart Girls College). The game was close from the start, girls went in hard and placed their bodies on the line, each girl giving it their all and leaving nothing in the tank when the game was complete. We gained a small, yet comfortable margin on the opposition throughout most of the game, yet as the players became fatigued SHGC kicked a goal. This placed an immense amount of pressure on us as the game began to draw to a close. Although bodies were sore and players were exhausted, the girls continued to go hard at it and their efforts are to be congratulated. As the final siren sounded, OLSH was in front by the most miniscule of margins: 16‐13. Well done to Bridie Malone who was named Most Valuable Player for the Grand Final game. All in all, the day was fantastic and all who participated throughout the day should be very proud of their efforts. Thank you to our coaches, Mr Wanless and Mr Tench, for coaching the team in the lead up and throughout the course of the day and helping us produce a victory. Thank you also to Mrs Rayment for organising the day, and all the Vet Sport and Rec girls who lent a helping hand. All those involved enabled the day to be a great success. GO OLSH!
