She had a home for herself and her

baby. Khloe was born in 2016.

“I never thought I was going to be able

to take care of a child and work,” says

Mykea. “My therapist at St. Anne’s told

me, ‘You’re strong. You came so far.

You can do it.’”

St. Anne’s Workforce Development

program also was instrumental.

“Workforce helped me get an

internship. They gave me leads to jobs.

They helped with my résumé. They

gave me an extra push to keep going

and not give up,” Mykea says. Her

determination got Mykea a full-time

job in customer service for an airport

shuttle company.

Karen Barajas, a St. Anne’s family

advocate, praises Mykea’s achievement:

“She’s maintained full-time, permanent

employment for almost a year. Stable

employment is an important goal

in the Transitional Housing

Program. Lots of girls

have challenges

getting or keeping

employment.”

One-and-a-half years

old, Khloe is thriving

in St. Anne’s Early Learning

Center. “Khloe is learning her

numbers and talking a lot,” say Mykea.

Mykea’s generosity and willingness to

help has made an impact on others.

“I know all the girls look up to me,

not because I am perfect, but because

I stayed focused,” she says. “They ask

me questions. I feel like a big sister. I

love that feeling. I give good advice.

That makes me feel good about

myself.”

Soon, Mykea will

leave St. Anne’s

for permanent

housing. “St. Anne’s

helped me become

independent,” she says. “I’m

ready. I’m excited. I’m not

nervous. I feel blessed.”

Independence. That is Mykea’s dream. With St. Anne’s help, she is well on her way.

Mykea went into foster care at age 2 because her mother used drugs. Mykea moved from home to home until, at age 4, she was placed with her grandmother. But things did not go well. “It was terrible,” Mykea recalls. “Even though it was family, I was always treated differently than the other kids, always given less.”

At age 17, Mykea left her grandmother’s home and entered an independent living program that concluded when she was 21. But she could not find housing, forcing her to move from one friend’s home to another. Then she became pregnant.

“I was looking for work. I was sick. I was tired. I was so depressed,” Mykea says. “After so many months of searching, when I was six-and-a-half months pregnant, I found a notice about St. Anne’s Transitional Housing Program on a bulletin board.”

Though she was scared and alone, Mykea was relieved when her application to live at St. Anne’s was approved.

OUR TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM is one of a very few programs that offers transitional housing for pregnant or parenting former foster youth, ages 18 to 24, and their children. Through stable housing on our campus and comprehensive services, young mothers find work or pursue education that increases their self-sufficiency and leads to permanent housing.

PARENT LEADER EXTRAORDINAIRE

Lidia Estrada’s jobs in community health take her to schools and community centers where she sees the challenge of getting busy parents involved. “I said to myself that when I had an opportunity, I would do my part,” Lidia says.

Her opportunity came when no one volunteered to be president of the parent committee at St. Anne’s Head Start program at Roselake Early Learning Center, where Lidia’s daughter, 3-year-old Devi, had just enrolled. “I hesitated because of my work,” remembers Lidia. “But I decided to make it work.”

Lidia did so much more than make it work! After her year as president, she joined the policy council for all of St. Anne’s Early Learning Centers. Because of her leadership skills, her fellow parents elected her to

ST. ANNE’S EARLY LEARNING CENTERS promote development and school readiness for low-income children ages 0 to 5. The licensed centers use a proven curriculum to prepare children for school—academically, emotionally and socially—giving them the tools for long-term success.

We also provide home-based early learning services to low-income children and parents. St. Anne’s specialists visit parents and children in their homes to promote healthy child development and preparation for preschool and kindergarten.

represent St. Anne’s on the Head Start

policy council run by the Los Angeles

County Office of Education.

On the LACOE policy council, Lidia

says, “It was nice to be with other

parents from all over the county

who were advocating for children.

It was humbling to think that

thousands of children were

benefitting from our work.”

Personally, Lidia and her husband,

David, saw the impact of Head Start on

Devi. “I could tell she knew more than

other kids her age who were not in an

early education program,” Lidia says.

The Estradas found out about

St. Anne’s Early Learning Centers

when a staff member who was doing

in-person recruiting stopped David

on the street. “My husband was going

to college, so we were a single-income

household,” says Lidia. “St. Anne’s

provided great quality

education at no cost

when we thought we

might not be able to

afford it.”

Going through old

papers with her mother,

Lidia recently learned

she attended Head Start, as did

David. Both the Estradas have earned

college degrees, so one could say that

Head Start really worked for the whole

family!

Brenda Sandoval, St. Anne’s parent

involvement coordinator, says

that Lidia has grown as a leader

in her volunteer roles. “She shines

throughout the program and beyond,”

says Brenda. Devi is entering

first grade, but Lidia

continues to share

resources with Brenda

to benefit St. Anne’s

families.

St. Anne’s is thankful to

have had Lidia as a committed

parent leader. Lidia adds, “I am

grateful through St. Anne’s that I could

find an active role in my community,

doing what I can for the well-being of

children.”

“Wraparound was able to speed up the adoption process with Ryan,” says Ricardo. “Our family really enjoyed going to the support groups every month and enjoyed having our weekly meetings.”

Even though Ryan had grown up with Maria and Ricardo, the process of forming a new family was not easy. The boy felt anxious about the

meaning of adoption and separating from his biological family. When he visited his birth family, he would often act out. Wraparound helped Maria and Ricardo learn effective strategies to ease Ryan’s anxiety.

At last, Ryan’s birth parents relinquished their parental rights, and he officially joined the Alcaraz family in June 2016.

Today, Ryan is a happier, calmer boy. In the Alcaraz home, his perfect

attendance awards from school

hang next to his Wraparound

graduation certificate. “He

always asks if we could

please go see ‘The girls

at the fun place,’” says

Maria, referring to St.

Anne’s therapist and

child and family specialist

on the main campus.

“Wraparound is a wonderful program.

St. Anne’s is a great agency,” says

Maria. “I simply cannot put into words

the great work they do.”

Maria Alcaraz heard the heartbreaking sound of a baby crying next door. She entered the apartment and found baby Ryan, just a few months old, in a closet. His parents were incapacitated by drugs, and he was being severely neglected. Maria called the police and took Ryan to her home.

Maria and her husband, Ricardo, fell in love with Ryan. “We wanted to adopt him from a very early age,” says Maria, “and his mother would tell us we could adopt, then change her mind. It caused us a lot of stress and anxiety.” Maria and Ricardo helped Ryan’s family by raising the boy.

When Ryan was 5 years old, the Department of Children and Family Services learned of the arrangement. DCFS approved Maria and Ricardo as foster parents and enrolled them in St. Anne’s Wraparound Approach services at the end of 2014.

A team of four St. Anne’s staff worked with the family: a mental health therapist, a child and family specialist to

Are you 55 or older?

Volunteer today!

St. Anne’s is seeking volunteers age 55 or older for a special volunteer project in our Early Learning Centers. Or you can play with babies to increase their motor, language and social skills. And you can play learning-based games to stimulate children’s cognitive growth and creativity.

A full list of St. Anne’s opportunities to volunteer—open to adults of all ages—is at www.stannes.org/volunteers.

If you would like to invest in the next generation, please contact Esther Clark at (213) 381-2931 ext. 341 or [email protected]. St. Anne’s provides training.
