The American Association for Thoracic Surgery Graham Traveling Fellowship, 2002-2003

STIPEND $75,000

The American Association for Thoracic SurgeryEvarts A. Graham Memorial Traveling Fellowship

was established in 1951 by The American Associationfor Thoracic Surgery. Administered through theGraham Educational Research Foundation Fellowshipgrants support study by young cardiothoracic surgeonsfrom outside North America at sites of their choicewithin North America and include travel between sites.Goals of the program are to broaden overall trainingand increase international contacts. Each Fellow shouldplan to have one primary center for his/her activitieswhere he/she should spend from six to nine months.The Fellow should have identified an individual at thatcenter who will act as his/her sponsor and assist inplanning the course of study at the host institution andat other institutions. In addition to the primary center,the Fellow is encouraged to plan to spend shorter peri-ods of time at other secondary centers to enhance theFellowship experience.

Awards are made to surgeons of unique promisewho have been regarded as having the potentialfor later international thoracic surgical leadership.Since the inception of the Graham Fellowship, 48young surgeons from 25 countries have completed theFellowship.

The Fellowship provides a stipend of $75,000, amajor portion of which is intended for traveling expens-es incurred when visiting other medical centers. TheFellowship also provides two round-trip coach air faresfrom the recipient’s country to his/her primary center.The dates of the beginning and ending of the Fellowshipyear should be scheduled to coincide with the AnnualMeeting of The American Association for ThoracicSurgery in May 2002. The Fellow will be introduced atthis meeting and his/her predecessor will give a report

of his/her year’s experience to the Plenary Session. TheFellow will be expected to present a summary of his/heryear’s experience at the 2003 Annual Meeting, whichwill take place at the Hynes Convention Center, Boston,Massachusetts, May 4-7, 2003.

The Fellow should become involved predominantlywith observation, consultation, teaching, and researchat a variety of thoracic surgical training centers duringthe twelve months. Patient contact will be determinedby the sponsoring surgeon and will conform to the reg-ulations and licensing requirements of the state,province, or country in which he/she is studying. Acandidate should have completed his/her formal train-ing in general surgery and in thoracic and cardiovas-cular surgery, but he/she should not have reached asenior position. Candidates must be sufficiently profi-cient in English to realize the full benefits of theFellowship. Candidates should not have received sig-nificant training in North America prior to makingapplication for this award.
