Philippines Independence Day 117 th anniversary celebrations FAANT, Inc. officers and members of the Filipino-Australian community in Darwin gathered on the 6th of June 2015 at the Filipino Community Centre to celebrate the 117 th anniversary of Philippines independence. The annual gathering was observed with a Dinner- Dance at the Filipino Community Centre. A cultural show which depicts a blend between life and work of Filipinos in Darwin and the cultural aspects of Filipino life in rural Philippines highlighted the celebrations. In keeping with the theme “Celebrating the Renaissance of the Filipino Pride: Our Values, Faith and Culture”, the message of Philippine President Benigno Aquino III stressed that “Together, let us weave our own voices of compassion and hope … and make tangible the legacy we are crafting: The Philippines we will all be proud to bequeath to coming generations.Gracing the occasion were Hon. Peter Donald Styles MLA, Minister for Multicultural Affairs; Hon. Lauren Moss MLA, Member for Casuarina; Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim, Darwin City Lord Mayor; John Rivas, Philippine Consul General. Also present were former FAANT Presidents - Lino Molina, Sam Marquez, Elena Ralph, Lisa Seuss, Malou McCue, and former Executive Committee Members - Dr. Cris Kabasares- Salandanan, Bernie Salandanan, Flora Garcia, Eric Garcia, Ron Greaves, and Eunice De Ramos.

FAANT, Inc. officers and members of the Filipino-Australian community in Darwin gathered on the 6th of June 2015 at the Filipino Community Centre to celebrate the 117th anniversary of Philippines independence. The annual gathering was observed with a Dinner-Dance at the Filipino Community Centre. The Filipino Australian Association of the NT (FAANT), established in 1973, plays an important role in gathering community members and organizing community events like the Barrio Fiesta, Harmony Day Youth Concert and the anniversary celebration of the Philippine Independence. It manages the Filipino Community Centre at Batten Road. FAANT also provides support services to its members. It is active in promoting social and recreational activities for the community such as its very own basketball league.

Johannah to China for film launch

In a message from the DoE Chief Executive, Ken Davies, he congratulated

“ the 50 Year 10 to 12 students of Chinese at Darwin High School, who produced a book for their contemporaries in Haikou, our Chinese sister city and capital of Hainan province. The book Life as a teenager in Darwin includes topics such as school and family life, shopping and football, and is being developed into a film for launch in Haikou later this month. Students Kawai Teng and Johannah Pastor will travel to the event. I wish them well and look forward to seeing the Darwin film, due for release during Term 3 this year.”

19th Barrio Fiesta

A favourite occasion of many Filipinos, the annual Barrio Fiesta, will be held at the Filipino Community Centre on Saturday 29 August 2015. The occasion will feature the Mutya ng Barrio Fiesta candidates and the usual variety of Filipino and international foodstalls.

Karaoke Night

As a prelude to the upcoming Barrio Fiesta, a Karaoke Night with the Mutya ng Barrio Fiesta First & Last Canvasing, will be held on Friday 21 August 2015 starting at 6:00 pm at the Filipino Community Centre.

Valentine’s Day Members and friends of the Filipino community spent a lovely Valentine’s Day Filipino–Latino Valentine’s Dance & Dinner at the Sky City Casino on 13 February 2015.

The Sabrosito Latin Trio of Meno Ella, Cristina and Jorge played romantic and lovely music throughout the evening to the delight of everyone as they danced the night away.

Sinulog The Sinulog Festival, highlighted with the

traditional and ritual dance in honor of Santo Niño (Infant Jesus), was celebrated by Darwin Filipinos. The Sinulog dance is usually accompanied by the sound of the drums. Through the dance, the devotees keep moving two steps forward followed by one step backward. While dancing, people chant petitions and thanksgivings to the Infant Jesus.

Fr. Mon Libot CMF, celebrated the mass at the Holy Family Parish Church. This was followed with a procession of the image of the Santo Niño. A fellowship lunch and cultural presentation was held at the Filipino Community Centre.

Harmony Day

The annual Harmony Day Soiree, a celebration of our cultural richness, diversity and a display of our harmony as a multicultural society was held last 30 May 2015 at the Darwin Waterfront Precinct

The event featured activities of traditional games, musical instruments, tea/food tasting and lantern making for VIPs. Special numbers from the Filipino Community were a stage performance by Ms Arlei Gonzales and the FAANT Cultural Dance Troupe. Jun Ocampo designed and created the VIP lanterns.

Grand Finals

The 2015 finals featured four Darwin teams made up of young and not-so-young Filipino-Australians.

MicShelleys’ Café, of Reynaldo Landong, finished Grand Finals Champion, defeating Allskills Recruitment & Migration Services, of Felix Carao, as 1st Runner-up.

Darwin Radiators & Mechanical Services, of Nico Llamas, was 2nd Runner-up with a win over the Ostojic Group, of Kylie Ostojic, 3rd Runner-up.

Hon. Lauren Moss MLA, was the League Championship‘s Guest of Honour.
