    onnecticut artist/author Carol Wal-

lace has recently released an e-

    , Daisy's Reality Show Adventure,

    morous satirical story about popu-

ulture as seen through the eyes of a

try dog. Daisy, who lives in an all-

al world, embarks on the Reality

w circuit and the glitz and glamour

    ollywood. During her tumultuous

ges her life forever. In the end, sherts valuable life lessons.

    hough the story appeals primarily

When I stopped by Purradise on

July 26, little Moochie, a tigerwhite cutie, was in the midst of

    playtime, chasing a cat dancer,

ed by staffer Tracy, about the main

m of kitty condos. No fool he,

chie seized the dangling toy into

mouth and made for the open door

s condo, aiming to add his prize to

    xisting stash. Other shelter cats

also in a mind to engage with toys

were not quite their own. When I

    ed gorgeous blue-eyed Siamese

Meowgie in the boutique area, he

    ntly identified with a Siamese-pat-

d plush toy that I wiggled in fronts condo...so thrilled by the intro-

ion that he rushed over to bump

s with it, as if the toy were alive.

    nwhile, Chelsea, a shy, dainty

do cat in the condo above, was im-

ately attracted to a mini me ver-

of herself that I held up: a plush

n that matched her coloring. (Hint:

u are unable to add a genuine cat to

    household, remember that

adise offers for sale beautiful soft

cas of various breeds that can fool

    the shelters critters into thinking

    oys are real!)

I walked about, greeting the other

dents, I noticed that some of the

    os sported signs denoting which

    al was currently being sponsored

    concerned human. What was that

bout? Its yet another alternative for

overs who may not be in a position

opt just now: Sponsorship is a spe-

    arrangement with the shelter that

les people who are interested in the

are of a particular Purradise cat to

me its godparent by chipping in to

pay for its services while it is at theer (and, of course, these good folk

ncouraged to visit their godcat as

n as they may wish to, during the

ers new hours [see below], for

    mutual pleasure). Sponsorship is

al that enables someone else who is

ng to provide a home for that very

o enjoy a bit of a discount, come

tion time, thus ensuring that a kitty

    has already captured its sponsors

heart will become that much more en-

ticing a prospect to someone else who

might otherwise hesitate at paying the

    full adoption fee.

One of the cats currently enjoying the

benefaction of a fairy godmother was

    three-year-old, all-black Judy, a big girl

    with a super-affectionate personality.

When brought into the shelters Nook

to be photographedthe Nook isPurradises comfy get-acquainted

space, outfitted with soft seating and

    numerous cat treesJudy explored the

room with interest before hopping onto

my lap for a hug, offering me an unso-

licited facial smoosh and a deep purr.

Anyone seeking a lively yet cuddly

    companion couldnt go wrong with

her...especially if you factor in her $50

sponsorship that takes the edge off her

    adoption fee. Other cats currently

flagged as having a fairy godparent are

    seven-year-old Stroodle, whose

    sponsored dollar amount would entirely

cover the cost of his ad

low senior, and Chelsea, discussed abo

    HEAT

With several 90 degree days behindus, and the possibility of morechers to come, keeping our pets

in the heat and humidity is essen-

ourse, not leaving your dogs in

ed cars for that matter any of

pets is top on the Pet Safety list.

most of us know, temperatures in a

even with its windows down, can

kly soar to over 120 degrees and

me deadly for animals locked in-

In a short period of time, pets can

er brain damage or die from heat

    ke.

    eryl Truskowski, Shelter Manager

    erkshire Humane Society (BHS),

    recommends forgoing car rides and

keeping your pets at home during the

hot days of summer. If it is necessary

to travel with them, say for a visit to the

    veterinarian, she advises leaving the

    air-conditioning running, especially if

you need to make a quick stop and

    she emphasizes quick.

Although many dogs are our compan-

ions for running, biking, and hiking,

    monitoring their exercise during warm

spells is crucial. Short burst, lots of

hydration, and plenty of rest and

shade, explains Cheryl, is the way to

keep your pet active but safe in these

    summer months.

Keeping your pet off of hot pavement

is also important. For example, when

walking your dog or asking him/her to

sit or lay down, find places that offer

plenty of cool grass and dirt as the pads

of their feet can easily get burned if ex-

posed to cement or blacktop. Addition-

ally, shade is essential. Be sure petenclosures, such as chicken coops and

rabbit hutches,* are situated in places

that offer protection from the sun.

And dont forget the water- lots of

water! According to Erin Starsja, Fe-

line and Small Mammal Services Su-

pervisor at BHS, good hydration is

always key to keeping your pet safe in

    the summer. She advises providing

ready access to a fresh source of water

at all times, adding that limiting expo-

sure to the outdoors will also help pre-

    vent dehydration.

On any hot days, be aware of the signs

of heat stress and heat stroke; they in-

clude panting and lethargy for the for-

mer and glazed eyes, heavy panting,

lethargy, vomiting, and a deep red or

purple tongue for the latter. If you sus-

pect your pet is suffering from heatstress, Erin advises getting him/her into

a cool location and offering water. You

can also lower your pets temperature

by splashing water in his/her armpits,

dipping one foot at a time into cool

water, or applying cold towels to

his/her head, neck, or chest. Never, she

warns, immerse your pet into cold

water, such as a swimming pool or

    pond.

Usually a pet will recover from heat

stress in about a hour, but if he/she

hasnt, then youll need to make an

emergency trip to your veterinarian. Incases of heat stroke, immediate veteri-

    nary care will be necessary.

    PESTY INSECTS

Protecting your pets from ticks, fleas,

and mosquitoes is an important priority

    during the summer.

Cats who go outside can be bitten by

ticks and suffer some skin irritation, but

    fortunately they do not

he Sonsini Animal Shelter is a

place where dogs who have lost

way can land and be reunited with

    owners. Those happy reunions

n take place within hours of the dog

ing at the shelter. For stray dogsse owners aren't looking for them,

ogs whose owners can't keep them,

stay at the shelter is much longer.

pite of every effort to keep kennels

n and cozy, provide good food,

cal care, and exercise, life at an an-

shelter can be stressful for dogs.

s one of the reasons we're so grate-

or the volunteers who spend time

ng with and walking shelter dogs.

also why we're so excited to an-

nce the opening of our Real Life

m; a comfy space where dogs can

    out with people.

ou've visited the shelter, you know

small it is. The office, where many

r functions take place all day long,

the only indoor space that it was

ible to spend time with a dog.

nks to the re-purposing of two dog

kennels and the generosity of many

people, there's now a room at the shel-

    ter just for that purpose.

Away from the barking of other canine

residents, a volunteer can sit in the

room with a dog doing regular home-like activities like reading the paper and

occasionally reaching out to pet the dog

when it has settled down by his side.

Moments like this help shelter dogs re-

member what living in a household is

all about. It's more about snoozing next

to their person and less about barking

excitedly from behind a chain link

fence at dogs around them. So along

with other activities provided for shelter

dogs (like playing in kiddie pools in hot

    weather, taking walks with volunteers,

and enjoying rousing games of fetch)

we're pleased to have this space where

dogs can experience being relaxed in a

comfortable room in the company of

the people who care about them. It's

great practice for what they're really

wanting; a home of their own.

This room was made possible by

    Berkshire Money Management, who

paid for the materials to construct the

    room; Dick Eastland, who volunteered

his time to construct the cinder blockwalls; Scott Pignatelli, who donated his

time and materials for lighting the

    room; an anonymous donor who

funded the supplies needed to decorate

and furnish the room; Matt Rock, who

volunteered his time to build the

was not an easy one. It started

nhill, but soon turned steeply up-

and in cold or bad weather the hill

    seemed endless. School buses were

non-existent; in fact, the first automo-

biles were just being built. When first grader Doris was stricken

with whooping cough, she was out of

school, quarantined, for nearly a month.

When it was time to return to school,

    the hill proved insurmountable. Doris

was still coughing, and too weak to

tackle it. An alternative method of get-

ting to school had to be found.

Rex provided the solution. A former

pacer at a racetrack located in St. Johns-

bury, the bay gelding had been re-

    schooled to become the familys

driving horse. Rex didnt only drive; he

had been schooled as a saddle horse aswell. He was a great driving horse, and

was used to pull the family buggy dur-

ing warmer weather and the sleigh in

the winter. His only downfall was that

if he came across another team on the

road, he was sure they were there for

him to engage in a race! So Rex was

pressed into service to take Doris to

school. There were no facilities forhorses at the school, so Rex couldnt

wait all day for Doris to finish her stud-

ies in order to take her home. But Rex

proved very trainable. He seemed to

understand the situation, and, with a lit-

    tle creativity and positive reinforce-

    ment, provided the perfect solution.

    Doriss dad, Herbert Gibson, learned

not to feed Rex his grain before they

left for school. So Rex, wanting his

    breakfast, would come straight back

home after dropping Doris off in order

to get fed. Doris, meanwhile, learned to

bring carrots and sugar cubes to schoolwith her. In the afternoon her dad

would saddle Rex, signaling the horse

that it was time to pick up Doris. When

he arrived at school, Rex would get his

treats. There was one temptation for Rex

along the way. A neighboring farm,

    owned by the McLams

    hay spillage when they
