    Definitions ad background

Pragmatics is concerned with the study of meaning as communicated by a speaker (or writer) and interpreted by a listener or

reader). It has, consequently, more to do with the analysis of whatpeople mean by their utterances than what the words or phrasesin those utterances might mean by themselves. Pragmatics is thestudy of speaker meaning

This type of study necessariy involves the interpretation ofwhat people mean in a partcular context and how the contextinuences what is said It requires a consideration of how speakersorganize what they want to say in accordance with who they'retalking to, where when and under what circumstances

Pragmatics is the study of contextual meaningThis approach also necessarily explores how listeners can make

inferences about what is said in order to arrive at an interpreta- tion of the speakers intended meaning This type of studyexplores how a great deal of what is unsaid is recognized as partof what is communicated We ight say that it is the investigationof invsible meaning. Pragmatics is the study of how more getscommunicated than is said.

This perspective then raises the question of what determnes thechoice between the said and the unsaid. The basic answer is tied to the notion of distance. Closeness whether it is physica, socia or conceptual implies shared experience On the assumption of how closeor distant the listener is speakers determine how much needs to besaid. Pragmatics is the study of the expression of relative distance

These are the four areas that pragmatics is concerned with. Tounderstand how it got to be that way, we have to briely review itsrelationship with other areas of linguistic analysis.
